One of my best-remembered Dilbert strips was (I think) a very early one. The pointy-haired boss consults Dilbert because his mouse was all the way to the right of the mousepad, but he needed the cursor to go further right. As I recall, Dilbert explained that the boss needed to buy a new computer and put it to the right of the current one…
I actually could relate. First time I used a mouse, it did take me a beat to realize how to deal with that situation. Posted by: mindful webworker - long long ago in the ancient days of you're at January 14, 2026 10:14 PM (FMpsC) 32

I can't tell from the picture, but early (pre late 50's) Indian bikes had optional throttles. The throttle could be on either the left or right grip. The grip on the opposite side controlled the ignition advance. Riding one of those was as busy as a one-armed paper hanger. The side shift required the right hand to come off the throttle or ignition, while the clutch was disengaged by the left foot. For racing, the left throttle was popular to keep the gas on while shifting. The ignition was mainly used when starting and under heavy loads. There was a slight detention around (IIRC) 4 degrees advance. Never had a four, it never came back after WW2. I did have a Chief with the 74ci flathead vtwin. For 3 months, until I wrecked it. You always remember your first.

Well, that was fun. Just got back from the ER. Posting thread before last, after my last post about Iran, I noticed I was feeling sort of jumpy, like an adrenaline rush. Noticed my heart seemed to be beating fast. Put the pulse oximeter on. Heart rate 150ish. So, off to the ER Miley and I went. On the way over, heart rate dropped to the 120ish level. Was 110 when I got in there. BP was 160/95. Lots of blood work. EKG normal, heart rate had calmed down to 90. Everything looked normal. Did notice a couple of skipped beat sensations during all that. Doc referred me to cardiologist, thinks "something is going on". Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at January 14, 2026 10:30 PM (w6EFb) 84

NY times Headline: Federal Agent Shoots Immigrant in Minneapolis, Homeland Security Says.
This happened about anh hour ago. What the New York times left out of the headline is the immigrant is an illegal alien from Venezuela. He was being arrested for being in the country illegally and while beging arrested began to violently assault the arresting ice officer. Shortly after this, two other perps joined in and began beating the ice officer with a snow shovel and a club. The officer at this point defended himself and with his firearm and ended up shooting the illegal alien in the leg. The officer and the illegal are in the hospital and the other two perps are arrested. Fox Live Now News Is broadcasting live from the scene. I thought it might be a reaction to the TNF blocker infusion I get for the RA. I had shingles back in Nov, and so skipped the infusion, and it's thus been 4 months since the last one. Rheumatologist retired this year, and I had to get in with a new practice, and they finally got set up to do the infusion today, which I did around 4PM. So, I wondered if maybe it was some crazy start after stopping for a while reaction. That stuff does have some association with heart problems, but I'd been taking it for years with no problems. RA itself long term does have heart effects. So, there you go. Doc didn't think it was a reaction, just maybe coincidental. Anyway, they'll likely put me on some sort of monitor for a while and see if they see anything funny going on. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at January 14, 2026 10:33 PM (w6EFb) 97

Walz indicted: yes, but conviction I’ll give 50-50 odds.
Greenland: yes Cuba: yes Government shutdown: no. This is a House election year, and I think they know the voters are sick of that bullshit More than six Starships? Yes SpaceX IPO? Not a chance. Musk isn’t gonna give up that much control, and it’s not like he needs the money. Russia/Ukraine? Don’t know, don’t care. Wildcard outcome: Poland bites off a good-sized chunk of Ukraine itself, possibly due to reviving the Poland-Lithuania Commonwealth. Ideally this will involve Winged Hussars. Fed Chair: I think there’s a good chance that the Fed as we know it is gone by the end of the year. Dem control of House. I don’t think so. More than 14 magnitude 7.0 quakes? Sure, that’s about an average number, actually (I didn't see anything about doing research... if that wasn't supposed to happen...Oh, well. I cheated on this one) Supreme Court Justice stepping down? Depends on the results of the midterms. If the Republicans have solid control of the Senate afterward, I could see Thomas retiring. Otherwise, no. Olympic medals: no clue. Silly wild-assed guess: yes. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at January 14, 2026 10:34 PM (IG3/x) 105

They stopped making them in the really early 40's. If I remember right indian ended up hiring one of Ace's engineers to help with the tinkering. It was an IOE engine, Intake over exhaust. I don't remember when but they tried to reverse that and build it as an exhaust over intake, and it ended up as a ball burner to anybody who rode it, so it failed and they returned to the original configuration. Heart rate jumping up to the 150s like that for no reason just sitting there is odd. Thinking about it, I've noticed skipped beat sensations when I get an adrenaline surge, like with a startle such as a loud noise or a near miss thing driving, where you get startled and have to slam on brakes. Heart rate accelerates and then the skipped beat. It seems sort of like a PVC. Thump..thump...thump...thumpThump.....miss...thump... So, something is likely going on, and it's just starting to show up. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at January 14, 2026 10:52 PM (w6EFb) 148

I see a cardiologist in a week for my done fall out, that I don't think was cardiac related (in early November). No other symptoms and I have done this before from dehydration and insomnia. I am a strange bird. I do have an irregular heartbeat (asymptomatic), need to lose wt and watch my mostly normal hypertension. I am very irritated about the entire thing. The echo showed some crap that we don't think is going to kill me. I am hoping the PA simply tells me to lose wt and puts me on new meds. Today I promised my husband I would be as brave as I always have been, and quit worrying. I don't worry 24/7, but sometimes I think about crap that I should not and let my fear turn to faith. Hope your heart is just jumping around and will settle down. I don't feel mine, but did in the past. This getting old stuff stinks, but a privilege many don't have to be irritated like me. I remind myself of that daily. God bless. Grok initially said the top photo was AI. I pressed it on this because it's specific comments were weak and it found the photo on an ebay auction of authentic old photos.
It's a real photo from the 40s. Posted by: pawn at January 14, 2026 11:47 PM (rbIOb) First off: this pic is probably from England. Notice the sign by the window? RAC Service Depot? That's Royal Automobile Club. And the Shell pump reads "Shell Motor Spirit". That's Brit usage for sure. The pickup, which is a Ford, I believe, looks like it might have an Amoco or Phillips logo on the door. Could be an "old" photo, taken any time from the 1950's to the 1990's, at some well-off Brit's car and petroliana collection. Does not look like an organically "real" picture. Posted by: Mitch McConnell at January 15, 2026 12:02 AM (8zz6B) 230
Ha! Grok lied. There is no ebay photo.
It said it could not find any artifacts. I asked it if it was lying and just blowing me off to save computational time (this has happened before). It spent almost 2 minutes (according to the timer that runs) and could not find any artifacts and said it was authentic but could not find any exact matches. +++++++++++++++++++ So TRex, where did this photo come from? All depends on what kind of riding you want to do. New ones are a fortune, well kept bikes with low miles can be had pretty cheap.
Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division Under 10K new, less used. I'm leaning towards a 300cc or 500cc bike since that can do short sprints on the freeways when there's no other option. The rest of the time will be secondary roads and dirt roads. Dirt roads in New Mexico can be utter sand pits or can be paved with bone jarring rocks. 10 mph is a good top speed on those so lightness and maneuverability is a key aspect. The secondary paved roads you have to be able to do 65 mph. The reality is there's so little traffic in rural New Mexico you could do 40 mph all day long and not be a problem. Basically I'm looking for a souped-up Trail 125 cuz that's how I roll. Posted by: Alteria Pilgram - My President has convictions. at January 15, 2026 12:17 AM (HTCU3) 245

Posted by: Mike Hammer ---------- Yep. Insurance is a *bad word* to me. They take and they take, year after year, "Lawd, they was lovey-dovey" until you have a claim. Then it's a battle. And if you don't get cancelled, you sure as hell pay them back (double or more) in increased premiums afterward. Such a fking racket. Posted by: JQ at January 15, 2026 01:02 AM (rdVOm) 300
Allstate insured my house for $100,000. It's on two acres of land here in Alabama. My taxes this past year was $150.00.
Gasoline prices around here this week $2.30 a gallon. Posted by: Case at January 15, 2026 01:02 AM (4rWc3) Posted by: MiklosWatch at January 15, 2026 01:03 AM (f/3mU) 302

Well, dear readers, I did it: Pulled the plug on a job that had me burned out, and retired!
My boss's nickname was "Kim Jong-il" (female Korean American, married to an Antifa goon boy, and had a taste for sadism). Being retired (three weeks now) is wee-urd. I thought it would be like being on extended vacation until the Lord calls me home -- but I feel adrift. It has also crossed my mind that my moneyman's telling me I have plenty of money to go the rest of the way, "even if you need a nursing home at some point" means that my expiration date is coming in a few years, and that's a sobering thought. Health, apart from needing to shed the weight I gained after refugeeing south from NYC, is pretty good. Sleep has been all over the map. Falling asleep in the Lazy Boy recliner, with Youtoob videos on autoplay; waking up at 5 am and pondering whether going back to bed counts as a nap. I feel like I got off of a Hellship, but as it has gone hull-down over the horizon, and the voices on board are fainter and fainter, I'm adrift in a little sloop on the ocean, with no destination in mind.... Any thoughts? Posted by: Beverly at January 15, 2026 01:07 AM (reMys) Posted by: A Miklos is as a Miklos does at January 15, 2026 01:08 AM (f/3mU) 305

--------- My uneducated view is that all this extra computing power is at best-- little more than electronic masturbation for crypto/AI and at worst-- a more streamlined means of invading personal privacy for advertising or legal entrapment of political opponents. Don't mind me. I'm just another idiot with a keyboard and 'net connection. Hahahaha. Posted by: JQ at January 15, 2026 01:08 AM (rdVOm) 306

Everything looked normal. Did notice a couple of skipped beat sensations during all that. Doc referred me to cardiologist, thinks "something is going on".

Any thoughts? Posted by: Beverly In NC, they don't care about assets, only income. NC is OK, and you can be a passive millionaire and qualify for Medicaid and stuff. Posted by: sakkaliner Miklos, a few miles shy of the State Line at January 15, 2026 01:11 AM (f/3mU) 312
