It's a shame for a good Roman and Greek mythology guy to admit it, but I had to look up Rhea Silvia:
"Rhea (or Rea) Silvia . . . also known as Ilia (as well as other names) was the mythical mother of the twins Romulus and Remus, who founded the city of Rome. Rhea was a Vestal Virgin who became pregnant with the twins after being raped by the god Mars; after giving birth, they were taken from her and raised by a she-wolf." So the kids here are Romulus and Remus? They look like toddlers, not newborns. Plus, if Rhea was a Vestal Virgin, the fate of being buried alive no doubt awaited her. Unless the society made an exception seeing that the sire was Mars. All mythology aside, this is a vivid painting. Rubens was famed for his luscious paintings of women; but here we see he could do muscular men and pink-cheeked toddlers just as well.

The Story Behind the Artwork Rubens’ "Mars and Rhea Silvia" vividly illustrates a scene from Roman mythology where Mars, the god of war, seduces* Rhea Silvia, a Vestal Virgin. This union would result in the birth of Romulus and Remus, the legendary founders of Rome. (* or raped, as was the custom of the day, lol) The painting brims with Baroque dynamism and sensuality, capturing the intensity of the moment while highlighting Rubens’ masterful use of movement, color, and emotion. The intertwining figures, bold contrasts, and mythological elements reflect Rubens’ talent for dramatizing classical stories with a mix of passion and grandeur. Symbolism and Details Mars (Left): Clad in armor and draped in a striking red cloak, Mars symbolizes power, aggression, and seduction. His assertive posture embodies divine dominance. Rhea Silvia (Right): Draped in soft white and gold, Rhea Silvia appears hesitant and vulnerable, representing purity and human frailty in contrast to Mars’ godly force. Cupid Figures: Playful cherubs, symbols of love and desire, flank the scene, emphasizing the romantic yet transgressive nature of the encounter. The Altar and Fire: The burning altar symbolizes divine involvement and the sacred duty Rhea Silvia abandons in succumbing to Mars. Mythological Sphinxes: The carved sphinxes represent mystery and the enigmatic union of mortal and divine forces. Posted by: People's Hippo Voice at January 13, 2026 09:37 AM (HXT0k) 31

I love this story tho. Romans were such a bunch of atavistic tribals. Most of this was of course conceived well after Rome was founded, and they needed a civic mythos to build on their numinous religious traditions.
So - what origin story do they come up with for their soldier-farmer society whose first generations were produced by women taken as spoils of war? Naturally, the god of war seduces a horny nun, who is condemned to live burial by her priest, so the river god intervenes and spares her life, but she abandons her children, who are also saved by the river god and rise to greatness after being nursed by an alpha predator, at which point one murders the other for talking smack. They were definitely hardasses. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at January 13, 2026 10:00 AM (BI5O2) 89

Signed into law 12-21-2025. Puerto Rico Recognizes the Unborn as Legal Persons Puerto Rico has enacted Senate Bill 504, a landmark law recognizing unborn children as legal persons from conception. Signed into law by Governor Jenniffer González Colón, the measure amends the island’s Civil Code to grant unborn children legal personality, allowing for protections such as: • Eligibility for insurance coverage • Inheritance rights (effective upon birth) • Legal representation in specific circumstances The bill passed both chambers of Puerto Rico’s legislature with strong majorities and took effect immediately. Pro-life organizations, including National Right to Life, praised the move as a historic step toward protecting human life at its earliest stage. Supporters say the law affirms a foundational principle: life begins at conception and carries inherent dignity and legal recognition. I knew the story of Mars and Rhea. How Mars appeared to her (a vestal virgin although that wasn't her choice). Rubens captured the sense of his sudden appearance, overwhelming the woman who conceives Romulus and Remus. The human figures are solid and colorful putting the viewers attention on them. Saw "The Housemaid" this week courtesy of th lovely and exciting Mrs naturalfake. So...have you ever had the misfortune to read "Jane Eyre"? (Those Bronte sisters have a lot to answer for!) Well, if you have, then you'll recognize within the first 5-10 minutes that "The Housemaid" is essentially a DEI reclamation of the main plot of "Jane Eyre". Crazy wife? Check, but is she really crazy? Isolated room at the top of the stairs with a door that only locks from the outside. Glamorous husband who loyally sticks with "crazy" wife. Young, strong minded Housemaid who becomes the love interest of husband. Yes. Yes. Yes. "The Housemaid" flips the roles around to get to a revenge flick for modern women that weirdly brings "Saw" into the mix. Well-made but predictable from practically the first frame. Good acting. Crisp direction. Had the ladies in the audience well-hooked. Not my kind of thing, but if it sounds like you'd enjoy it, you will. Posted by: naturalfake at January 13, 2026 10:39 AM (iJfKG) 178

Some of my bullion at least. Not my rare coins. Problem is I've never sold any before, and from my research thus far, it seems even big dogs like APMEX are charging extortionate premiums, and it only gets worse with smaller dealers. What's the best way to seek out private buyers? I can give a small discount under spot, the buyer can avoid his own premiums altogether, and I could drastically reduce the first haircut I take before Uncle Sam rapes me violently on the long-term capital gain. 180 Silver spot at $88.57 per oz. That means an average circulated pre-1965 dime has $6.33 worth of Silver in it, and an average pre-1965 quarter contains $15.82 worth of Silver.
Posted by: An Observation sez Trump is my President ======= Far too high price jump in a very short period of time. 160 percent in one year. That means mfgs are going to be substituting other goods for silver which can be done in most cases. Apparently EVs and Solar electronics are driving this train which are both likely to have softening demand. And silver is not typically a hedge for inflation, gold is. I think this is a momentum investment which can turn south at any moment just like the meme stocks were previously (Gamestop anyone?) based on analysis of shorts and longs. And a lot of silver production which is a byproduct of lead and other metal production is likely to come on line as separation was not economically viable at 20-40 bucks but becomes so at 80. Much like diamonds, getting what you paid for gold or silver is challenging.
You'll probably get a better ROI from gold than silver, perhaps try to convert your silver to gold and then hold that, as gold can be expected to keep rising. Posted by: Thomas Bender at January 13, 2026 10:54 AM (Q6XoW) 217

You can always tell when the market is driven by momentum as no fundamentals are considered, only price == In some corners of the internet there are people who are claiming silver will go to 10,000. The meme being there is not enough silver to cover the contracts snd when things go to a precious metal standard (dont ask me why) viola it will bid up the price to cover. I have heard this from several gullible souls. They all fail to conceive that when grammies silverware becomes worth 50,000 how quickly the markt will flood. But more seriously, the rising price stimulates production that is now viable for profit. It will go to 100 maybe 200 max. Wont last. Try jewlery stores with signs that say we buy gold. So the rumor is going around the social media circuit that ICE is NOT a law enforcement agency nor can they arrest American citizens. Mars and Rhea Silvia
Peter Paul Rubens Date: c.1620 Style: Baroque Genre: mythological painting Media: oil, canvas The painting based on myth: Rape in which twins were conceived of a virgin but King Amulius ordered the children to be abandoned in the Tiber River to drown. Tiberinus the river god intervened by calming the waters so the basket carrying the twins (Romulus and Remus) washed ashore. First strike against the painting: IMHO, a more violent, unsettling twist on the birth of Moses, saved by the Pharaoh's daughter who eventually raised him as her son. (Exodus, Old Testament) In part, "Now a man of the tribe of Levi married a Levite woman, 2 and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months. 3 But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket[a] for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it..." Second strike: Playful cherubs, symbols of love and desire, flank the scene, emphasizing the "romantic yet transgressive nature" of the encounter. No, they don't, they aren't. I detest the little chubbies. Despite it's value, I would pass on hanging. Thanks. Posted by: L - No nic, another fine day at January 13, 2026 11:10 AM (NFX2v) 246
You can always tell when the market is driven by momentum as no fundamentals are considered, only price of the asset.
Sorry, you don't understand what is going on AT ALL. What is driving the silver price up are the following fundamentals: 1. Silver consumption has exceeded Silver supply for the past 5 consecutive years. 2. You can't build modern processing chips without the conductivity of silver. Example: A Tomahawk cruise missile has 500 oz of silver in its guidance system, and that silver is turned into unrecoverable vapor each time one is used. 3. Because the banks held silver price down artificially by short selling for years, they are now required to cover their gigantic short positions or go bankrupt, and there is no silver available to cover their shorts. 4. China is waging a commodity war with the US by cutting off Chinese silver from the Western market. 5: Silver has always come out of the ground at a 16 : 1 ratio with gold - now it is coming out of the ground at a 7 : 1 ratio. All the rich veins of silver are simply gone. Posted by: An Observation sez Trump is my President at January 13, 2026 11:16 AM (Da7Vv) 247
