Gun Thread: Second January Edition!
FUNdamentals So last week we had what I thought was a highly productive conversation on fundamentals of shooting stance courtesy of troublemaker nurse ratched. Here is her troublesome comment.
Which sparked a lot of well considered responses. Might the answer be to incorporate the practice of different stances into your range routine? What do all y'all think?
Ok. Riddle me this. I get sight alignment and trigger pull. But why stance? In what real world shooting situation will you be able to make stance a priority? You may be on one knee peering over a half wall, looking around a corner with your weight on your weak leg, moving sideways, backwards, or maneuvering a stairwell. I mean. I get planting your feet and being solid when you’re just standing at a line shooting holes in paper, but how is that a transferable skill to real life? Not trying to be a troublemaker.

Have I been to the range? No, not for a week and a half. Stupid flu season.
I have things to do, guns that need to be shot, and I can't be wasting time like this. Especially, a 2017-vintage "used" Dan Wesson PM-38 that turned out to be unfired, so I have to only shoot 50 rounds per range session until I reach 500 rounds, because that's the break in schedule. They didn't say why, but others said it was to avoid galling. Yikes!

Still waiting for the rifle I ordered to come in.
I have already ordered the rings for the scope, they should be in Tuesday.
Unless something catastrophic happens I should be mating the scope with the rifle by Saturday.
Who knows, maybe the first shots from the rifle might happen next week. :-)

Went to the range with Lazy Messnenger and the Nurse.
LM brought his suppressed Savage .22. I really, really, really want a suppressed .22 myself.
Maybe at birthday time in March I'll get a integrally suppressed Ruger 10/22 takedown barrel or a a MK IV upper.
I did some shooting my not normie takedown 10/22 and was mostly happy with it. Iron sights are ok but I miss my dot. So bought a Picatinny rail for it. Will install tomorrow. Then will put a cheap red dot on it and test.
Also put some 147 gr 9mm through my church gun. The PSA Micro Dagger shoots single shots very well and slow fire shots very well but I suck at double taps.
More training required.
Still...it's a very good gun for the size, cost and firepower provided with the 15 round PSA mags.

Face the target. Draw your gun. That is your stance. Sights, trigger press, stress management matter WAY more than stance.

The laager - my locking steel cabinet, not technically a safe - runneth over. I don't have enough room for all my stuff. So, hey, instead of buying a zillion pound thing that no way am I going to get upstairs to my current storage area, and I really don't want to have to move to Florida, why not turn a closet into a safe with all the cool wall hangers?
I marked out an area on floor with masking tape the size of the wall available to me in the closet. I laid out just rifles to see how it would look. Well. Not enough room there, either. Turns out - if you think about it this makes sense - hanging a bunch of rifles for display is not super space efficient.
So, foo. Looking at some other options where display items are limited. But then I need a way to hold the non-display items. Gah.

So much of my affection for a cigar seems to have to do with aging. I had these Punch cigars that I really regretted buying, but after 20 years, I liked them a lot.
At age 29, of course, I can buy inexpensive cigars and wait for them to age. But, bear with me here, if I were considerably older than that, I'd face a real problem if my humidor actually became empty, which happened last month.

No range report because my local indoor range is shut down for annual maintenance. If you plan on going to, or passing through Titusville, FL, do try to schedule an appointment to visit the Institute of Military Technology next to the Knights Armament Corporation's factory. Reed Knight placed Eugene Stoner's work desk in a room with the surrounding walls filled with an example of nearly all, if not all, of his innovative firearms from the 1950s until his death in 1997. This isn't the easiest place to visit (because of the security associated w/ the KAC factory), but it's well worth the trouble you'll go through to make it happen. And if you have $$ burning a hole in your pocket, there is a McLaren dealer in the campus.

Skip, the .457 will be ok for the Colt replica. You want to see a thin ring of lead shear off when you seat the balls onto the charge. I then grease the front of the cylinder with Bore Butter but Crisco can substitute

OK, a question for Weasel, whig, RI Red, etc.:
Do barrels only work on one kind of receiver? AR-10, for example? IOW, if I buy a 6.5 Creedmor barrel for my AR-10 (that, hypothetically, has a .308 barrel installed), can I also install it in something built around a regular stock?
The reason for this question relates to the proposed anti-freedom legislation proposed for the new year in the People's Republic of Virginia.

Good evening frens, I just walked back in from my home range and have a big smile on my face because FUNDAMENTALS . . . . and a new scope brought about some nice tight groups that I was able to move right into the cross hairs! I was so excited but since I was shooting by myself I didn't have anyone to tell about it. Then I rememberd it was Sunday evening! Thanks to Weasel and all you regulars for keeping this thread going so well for so many years

I gave up smoking years ago, but I really did enjoy cigars. A friend brought me back my first Cuban cigars from a trip to England (this would have been around 1973 or 1974). I rented white tie and tails (and a top hat), and when my tobacco procurer returned, I had another friend drive me over to her house in a 1939 Cadillac his father owned. I wanted to do justice to the cigars - which, incidentally, were Romeo y Julietas (Churchills, EMS) I kept the ashes from the first one I smoked in a plastic bag for years, as if they were the remains of a loved one.

The military never standardized the AR-10 design like they did for the AR-15/M-16/M-4 series of rifles. Because of that, there's no guarantee that any "AR-10" component from manufacturer A will fit an "AR-10" receiver from manufacturer B unless you're buying everything from the same manufacturer. That's not to say that building an AR-10 out of individual parts is impossible. But you'll have to be careful to make sure that the parts you select are all compatible with each other after the build is complete. For example, I'm pretty sure that you can't mix and match KAC SR-25 parts with a PSA Sabre.

Ideally if you plan on moving and shooting, the weight on the feet should be forward on the balls of the footpad but not so much where your heels are in the air.
In real terms, do what you can in a stable position so you can move right or left out of the line of fire.

Not a cigar issue, but I'm considering buying another vintage pipe on eBay. Not only does it look good and is a shape I don't have (and with a *very* attractive price), it's an unusual one: made in Tanganyika more than sixty years ago. I know it's no younger than that. Tanganyika became Tanzania in 1964, and the pipe has the name of the country incised into it along with the brand name, "Kiko" ("pipe" in Swahili). So, a pipe with historical value as well as useability!

You can switch barrels around on your AR-10 and the stock will work just fine. If you want to change your stock from fixed(like an A2stock) to an adjustable or visa versa you need a matching buffer tube with your new stock.

Speaking of guns I've gotta shoot... I have a Redhawk that I haven't fired in.... 4? ...5?.... years, mainly because it hurts to fire it. Bum right wrist (badly broken once) that usually doesn't bother me, but two cylinders worth produces real pain. I have couple hundred 44mag rounds, but I'm thinking I need to drop down to 44 Spec to be able to really stay familiar with the gun. Anyone have a light load that works in mag brass? I reload and have a bunch of mag brass, and I don't want to.spring for 44 Spec brass if I don't have to.

Pattern A) has two subvariants--low DPMS receiver and high (older design by DPMS) DPMS receiver. The major issue is not the barrel, bolt, etc. but the match between handguards (if you want the rail on the upper receiver and handguard to be equal). Use a high profile upper with a high profile handguard and ditto for low profile DPMS. Rest of teh parts are the same IIRC. Palmetto uses the low DPMS receiver and Aeroprecision uses the high DPMS receiver.

102 You can switch barrels around on your AR-10 and the stock will work just fine. If you want to change your stock from fixed(like an A2stock) to an adjustable or visa versa you need a matching buffer tube with your new stock.

Barrels interchange, handguards are specific to teh upper receiver in the DPMS model. The Armalite design barrels and barrel nuts and handguards are not interchangeable with the DPMS models. Offhand, I think the bolt may be different too but don't have one around to check.

I had only one outing previously at a nice range but since I don't shoot at public ranges very often I couldn't calm down and focus on, you know, FUNDAMENTALS. Today the weather was perfect, no wind, and everything came together.

FWIW, my fil was too much in a hurry to get his suppressor years ago and when he died, it left a mess.
I advise spending the extra cash and setting up a firearms trust with more than one person on it. That way, you don't end up with a problem on your hands if you happen to kick the bucket. Leaves a mess behind for the estate as no one else can legally touch it unless you know a Class 3 gunsmith to destroy it and report it to the ATF or you let the police come and take it. (document this if you do). Gunsmiths have bound volumes so they have to recognize receipt and match it with documentation that it was destroyed.
Police can be slipshod because their business does not depend on correct firearm records.
Last is where someone gets approved for them and takes control of it without you being able to access or touch the suppressor.
BTW, none of the class 3 dealers wanted to mess with a used suppressor. That might change now but they are the other option.
Get the trust set up. Pay the freight. Worth it.

Ok technically LR-308, the barrel nut is part of the handguard assembly so if you switch barrels you use the same barrel nut and handguard so everything fits as before unless your gas tube and or gas block on the new barrel are a different size. Then they need replacing.

There are quite a few loads for doing what you mentioned and step down in bullet weight as well. Weasel does not like loads discussed here but loaddata dot com, or reloading manuals are your friend here.
You will probably need to back away from mag powders to do it as some of those don't burn right when the case is less full.

Not being much of a 'gub guy' I'll just lurk in the shadows. I did enjoy the 'Highway Patrol' episode. Amazing how those old shows can still grab your attention. I found myself tensing up at the end there when Broderic Crawford was struggling over the switch...even though logic tells you they can't blow up the show's star....
I'll bet he woulda blowed up real good though....

A lot of times I think you can ship such items to your destination but that is additional money, expense, and another back ground check at the destination and when you receive it back home. But I would check with the ATF before doing that and I assume it would have to go from one class 3 dealer to another one to conduct the relevant background checks for you to get it at either end.

You can trim both .41 & .44 Mag cases down to toSpecial length. It's a real PITA if you don't have a power trimmer. Much easier to download to Special power level if you hand load. Specific handload recipes are something our host Weasel has specifically asked not be posted.
I once got in trouble for posting the charge weight in grains for the 16" gun of an Iowa Class Battleship.

Yesterday I linked to a YouTube vid of a chick who says she's trying to set up a small business to produce suppressors at a market beating price. However... After clicking around the site more, "she" appears to be a transgendered dude. Well, crap. I hate this timeline where I even have to think about stuff like this. I was bummed when Andersons went out of business. I have one of their flat side (no foreword assist or dust cover) AR-10 uppers (tall) and I really like it, I went to order another for a spare and they were out of business. My other favorite upper 17 Design went belly up too!!

I've been told that 22 has just enough power to enter the skull and bounce around. Does that sound right? I'm not sure it would penetrate, by my experience is limited to the M16A2 and M242 25mm Bushmaster

Leave the cases long as magnums rather than firing specials. If you fire enough of them in a magnum, you will occasionally need to remove the crud and fouling build up in the cylinder. It can cause some issues.
This goes for 38 SPC and 357 Magnum too and especially if you fire lead special bullets as these tend to foul the chambers of the cylinder more.
Firing full length brass with reduced loads eliminates the problem and the brass lasts forever firing special loads with minimal (at least for 44 mag) effort in resizing it after shooting.

178 The State drained a reservoir back home in Ohio years ago for some sort of maintenance. The causeway bridge was on a main route between Youngstown and Akron. A lot of stuff that goes bang was found after the drainage was complete, no doubt left by the Youngstown or Akron "outfits".

Why can't you take a known, "allowable" powder charge and move down some arbitrary amount (say to 80%), and then start checking to see if that produces an acceptable result for your purpose. (Especially if you own a chrono!)
I can see the risk if you create a round so weak that there is a chance the bullet does not exit the barrel.
I am a tinkerer by nature, but I never see our experts talk about "tinkering" with weaker charges. Usually when the experts do NOT do something that seems reasonable to me, there is a damn good reason.

Mostly the reason you describe - a round stuck in the barrel - which I have done by screwing around. All sorts of goofy and unexpected (bad) shit can happen with pressure outside a sometimes narrow powder charge window. Always check your plan against values published in a reloading manual.

Mostly the reason you describe - a round stuck in the barrel - which I have done by screwing around. All sorts of goofy and unexpected (bad) shit can happen with pressure outside a sometimes narrow powder charge window. Always check your plan against values published in a reloading manual.

The powder loading manuals prefer a pressure curve where the range in loads is pretty much linear but that is not true for the entire pressure curve. So the loading manuals include the safer part where you do not get curvilinear behavior.

Harris was a former firearms designer and engineer working at various firearm plants until he retired. The Load is designed for safe reduced loads that won't produce a squib yet stay in the pressure curve needed.

No, I did not smoke the entire thing, we separated the individual sticks.
The only taste I can describe is "Woodsy" because all of its flavors blended so well, I couldn't identify any specific ones.
The way it burned was kind of fascinating too. Because of the twisted shape, one side would burn faster and then it would even itself out at the next bend.
It costs 30 bucks which sound unreasonable until you consider that it's three cigars in one.

Why can't you take a known, "allowable" powder charge and move down some arbitrary amount (say to 80%), and then start checking to see if that produces an acceptable result for your purpose. (Especially if you own a chrono!)
That is exactly the "normal" process. The most reliable source for a known safe charge is a published manual. My current favorite is the Lee soft cover one.

Tritium sights on G21 were dead nuts on. 22 rd mag had no FTFs. New holster is still tight, but I’m breaking it in (wrapped in plastic bag and jammed in hard. Got about a half inch to go before I can snap the thumb break).

No worries, I'm still going to protect my ears. Lost more than was wise in the Marines. They push hearing protection but there are sp many instances where you cant stop to find ear plugs, or one falls into the turret. Plus you're constantly on comms, its just not practical.

A perfect example was back a ways, Alliant had some issues with its flake powders where they generated curvilinear pressure curves when they were supposed not to do that. Another tricky powder can be Titegroup from Hodgdon's. Designed to be position insensitive (very easy to set off), some people had pressure spikes well beyond what they should have in certain cartridges and loads.
Now, add in primers to the mess and each brand is a bit different and Federal actually has a different formula with more brisance (explosiveness) using a different formula. Same again for non-toxic primers that appear now and again (Fiochi sold them at one time).
There is a reason if you reload, you follow the manuals and start at the very bottom load for a specificly new load for your firearm. If it is an old one, then be VERY careful because even such seemingly harmless loads like 32 SW Special behave differently in solid frame versus the top breaks.

Hearing protection. I have found out over the years one of the best products is Mack's Wax Earplugs. They form to fit, and you can get about three uses out of them. Good alone for .22s or under muffs for louder stuff. Drug stores sell them, in packs of 2 through 8.

The quietest is Colibri from Aguila. Uses the primer only. About like a pop. Never tried those with a suppressor though.

Say, anyone got any tips for a 2011 where I replaced the grip, sear, disconnector, and sear spring, and everything seems great except that when I pull the trigger, the hammer stops on the half-cock notch?
I got to be thread late but a ^F for 2011 didn't show answers. My guess is that something -- hammer strut on a first guess -- is binding on the three fingered spring. If you didn't remove the beaver tail but just flipped it up, it can be difficult to get everything back in place without misalignment.

193 178 The State drained a reservoir back home in Ohio years ago for some sort of maintenance. The causeway bridge was on a main route between Youngstown and Akron. A lot of stuff that goes bang was found after the drainage was complete, no doubt left by the Youngstown or Akron "outfits".

Arf dot com and there are specialized forums for builds as well. But, a lot of the 308/Creedmoor types, are now based on proprietary uppers, bolts, lowers, etc. where it can be dizzying to figure out what can fit with brand x.
You want to build one, I would stick to the PSA or the Aeroprecision (someone here had a problem with them) using the DPMS specs. Those are most of the free parts out circulating. Armalite design AR-10s used to have such but demand for those has shriveled up.
Most people give up AR-10 builds and just buy one off the shelf but you can find someone at arf dot com or some of the specialized AR forums that do have substantive knowledge of which parts can be swapped with your desired model and where you can buy them.

I was up in my deer stand during really nice weather this week. I realized you don't even need to shoot a gun to enjoy the experience.
I was alerted to deer walking in through some heavy cedar cover when they went through a patch of grass and kicked up a cock pheasant. He was screaming his indignation the whole way as he flew right towards me.
Also, I had to field dress a deer in the dark. The coyotes and the barred owls very thoughtfully provided some background music.
I hope your ailments are improving and you can get back "out there" as some point!

Oh my bad. I thought you meant standing and kneeling variations due to terrain or obstruction.
But prone? Prone is its own animal. Its your most stable firing position so you want to take advantage of that to create the tightest position possible.
I'm going to be unusual and say that I really have no idea how much you can deviate from the prone without losing its advantages. To do so in the Marines was blasphemy so I have no experience shifting prone around for irregular terrain.

Buy a small lot first. 1911s can be picky with some bullet profiles, glocks tend to eat most of them but not supposed to fire lead in polygonal barrels. That means an aftermarket barrel without that rifling style. My Springfield XD ate them fine.
Some of the competition websites, Brian Enos forum used to talk all about such bullet profiles, etc. so you might find someone there with that knowledge. I just know that some firearms, particularly older 45 ACP models can be picky on wadcutters and some don't care. Most of the new ones don't care because that profile is common in competitions.
You will need though to find loading data as the transition between lead/plated/coated and fmj requires more pressure from loads than the former. Don't use a lead listed load for a fmj as things can get spicy.

Are you using alcohol to soak the inside of the holster before jamming the gun in? That was the recommendation from the manufacturer of one leather holster I have, and it seemed to work pretty well.

That may have been me. My Aero M5 upper had a flaw due to broken mill tooling that was not caught in QC. The replacement, once I got it, was perfectly fine. Aero's customer service is NOT very responsive.

Thanks, Whig. I shoot my Glocks with SS rifled barrels with fully supported chambers. I do have different loads for lead and copper.
I was intrigued because I really like the LSWC for accuracy and punched holes in paper, but not the cleaning. I do shoot copper through after lead and it helps.

There is an upper limit on cartridge length for AR mags and magwells whether AR15s or AR10s.
Other than a few proprietary weirdo mfgs, you cannot use a long action cartridge in any AR10 as is. It would require magwell changes and then you would have custom mag problems.
So, you want an AR10--you are limited more or less short action cartridges of teh 308 design. The bolts need to be those that match the 308 (there are special bolts for AR15s that allow bigger cartridge heads). Then you have to work inside the pressure curve for the AR system so that rules out some 308 variants. So the usual for std pattern AR10s of DPMS models is either 6.5 Creedmoor barrels or 7.62x51 aka 308.
Looks like Bearcreek Arsenal has uppers with barrels for 250-300 and they have 22-250 and 8.6 Blackout that fit on their lowers along with 308 or 6.5 Creedmoor.
Firing semi autos gets into the other complicated portion of loading as you have to balance the gas, recoil buffer weight, and other factors like suppressors.

That may have been me. My Aero M5 upper had a flaw due to broken mill tooling that was not caught in QC. The replacement, once I got it, was perfectly fine. Aero's customer service is NOT very responsive.

Whig, I seem to recall that the aerodynamic profile of a semiwadcutter is pretty good. Something about the pressure wave coming over the tip misses the cutout and binds to the lower section.
Sort of the shape of regular ball ammo.

Deadshot Barrels makes AR-10 barrels in some interesting configurations like 6.5 PRC (need a new bolt) and 300 WSM. Feeding and mags are probably problematic, Plus I don't want anything that takes 70gn of powder!!

I recommend taking the hour or so to do your "Mother may I" paperwork for BATFE 30 days in advance of your travels so you can transport your NFA toys across state lines. I say better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it, given the potential penalties for NFA violations.

This is actually a great question. For a pistol, it's going to determine how you handle recoil for follow up shots, may cause you to shank some rounds, and may even induce malfunctions due to the pistol not recoiling properly.
For rifles, stance is even more important. Up close it'll drive your ability to control recoil for follow up shots. Farther out, it's inextricably linked to where the bullet goes. You and the rifle are moving one direction as a system, while the bullet moves another. Change how you move and the muzzle will point at another spot when the bullet leaves. For something like 200-300m with an AR-15 you can kinda half ass it for torso sized hits. For a precision rifle, you have to practice having you+rifle recoiling consistently. Ideally the same for each type of position, else consistent within each one and knowing how they differ. Otherwise we're talking missing by yards at 1000+

The AR design itself was never designed for those kind of pressures and you would do a dance to find mags and figure out buffer weights, etc.
On that kind of kludge, buy the whole rifle from the mfg because you have one point of contact rather than many. Otherwise you can get pass the buck on warranty issues.

Prone or standing for me. If I did paddy squats or some such nowadays I would be stuck in that position until help arrived.

Leave the cases long as magnums rather than firing specials. If you fire enough of them in a magnum, you will occasionally need to remove the crud and fouling build up in the cylinder. It can cause some issues.
This goes for 38 SPC and 357 Magnum too and especially if you fire lead special bullets as these tend to foul the chambers of the cylinder more.
Firing full length brass with reduced loads eliminates the problem and the brass lasts forever firing special loads with minimal (at least for 44 mag) effort in resizing it after shooting.

Had a sergeant who worked the Embassy in Tehran before the take over. He loved the boar hunting there. Big too, pushing 400 lbs for males. I don't know what he used to hunt with but his backup carry was a .41 magnum.

For field shooting positions on rifles, I highly recommend Col. Cooper's The Art of the Rifle book. Copiously illustrated with the Colonel's dry humor but vast knowledge.

"quiet".22 loads a few years ago.
Caps are only good for dispatch, and not a very large critter at that.
I do remember lobbing in some rounds of something at 20 yards. Heh
Air rifles are superior for urban shooting.

Skeeter Skelton, an old timey gunwriter used to use 38 Special brass loaded to a fare the well in 357 Magnum revolvers because as a lawman, he got 38 SPC brass free for the taking from ranges in that era. Anyway, my FIL loaded some of my brass with a measure of Unique that would have been +P+. Fired it at a range and it gave a brilliant orange flash and a huge boom with some spirited recoil.
Guy next to me "What the hey are you firing--some kind of cannon?"
Moral of the story is always load your own damn cartridges if you cannot watch someone else doing it. Turns out he had somehow got ahold of one of Skeeter's old 38 SPC loads and thought that would be fine.
I was firing it in a GP 100 so it came out okay but I pulled the rest of the bullets from that brass which was a royal pita. Never let him load anything for me again and took up reloading myself to feed the habit.

Try cold blue on an inconspicuous spot. You can also pay to have a gun refinished. S&W did one for me and the results (on a police turn-in) were amazing. Ford's is also a good bet.

Chemically it is just a sort of rust (magnetite vs. regular rust), but bluing guns is an art as well. There are shops that do it marvelously, and shops that make it look like a kid colored it with blue paint.
