Linda Ronstadt's Love Is A Rose The Doors seem to be either an acquired taste, or maybe just not for everyone. I like them, although not as much as in my youth. The Doors' Break On Through (To The Other Side) Hard to beat Merle Haggard for classic country. But there are so many genres in country music that I can't keep them apart, and I don't much care. Well, maybe modern pop country is beyond the pale for omeone whose first taste of country music was "Wreck Of The Old 97!" Merle Haggard's Mama Tried Garrett's favorite artist! I am not a fan of Nirvana, but this is a solid song, which explains its popularity. These two videos are on Rolling Stone's list of best music videos of all time. Not to piss on the parade:
- dislike the Doors. Always seem like an affected fanbase to me. -similar with Bob Dylan although as a song writer it is impossible to dispute his talent. - Nirvana was good but like so many other things they are probably better off from a musical history standpoint due to their brevity. I only went to 7 Dead shows, beginning with Dylan at RFK in '86, so it's not a lot, but they were all great with one bad exception (it happens). My sum total of chemical ingestion is one beer. (The one time I ever did psychedelics at a music show was a Dead cover band, LOL.) They were a fun band to watch live and while they did the long, drawn-out jam thing, they also have a lot of short, catchy songs going back to their 1st album. A lot of Quadrophenia was prominent in the soundtrack of my college days.
Posted by: pawn The Deluxe CD of Quadrophenia has Pete's demos for the album. Some are pretty much straight on what the Who laid down on the album, but Can You See the Real Me demo is really funky and different than the mega Who version on the album. Kind of tells you that Pete must have been listening a bit to funk bands I guess. Best version of Quadrophenia's Drowned is Pete playing solo (and very drunk on brandy) at the Policeman's Secret Ball 1979. Much more passionate than the Who version on the album and better sung too. Hardly a major trend but I've noticed that some popular stars from the 70s to the 90s, especially vocalists, made a successful switch to traditional western and folk music and classic evergreens. Kathy Mattea, Suzy Bogguss, John Hartford, Toni Tennille, and Michael Martin Murphy come to mind. The voices are as good as ever, just not whatever passes for hit songs these days. Linda Ronstadt made several albums with the Nelson Riddle orchestra of big band songs. The albums still sell and are popular. Their concerts may not fill huge arenas but they do sell out their venues.

My guess is to appeal to people that think that is how music should sound. I never saw a show in which Bob Weir was anything but energetic.
My favorite Bob Weir song was Black-Throated Wind, but there were a bunch that I loved seeing turn up: The Music Never Stopped Greatest Story Ever Told Let it Grow Estimated Prophet Samson and Delilah Beat it on Down The Line And probably more I'm forgetting. I once saw Bob Weir's band on a tour with JGB. This was when he had some amazing legendary bass player with him. I've been looking for that perfect version of Book of Rules that they played at Cape Cod Coliseum ever since, and never found it. Posted by: Splunge at January 10, 2026 09:26 PM (7DKa5) 197
Thx for that Opinion Fact.
I bookmarked the YT channel for that. I can't visualize images etc. and turn them in my head but curiously enough I can instantly recall music and know whether it is the original artist and recording. I can pick out different takes on the same song or where they spliced in a previous take in a lot of cases as well and where they did it. I 'hear' the music in my brain like a tape which makes it a stone cold beyotch if I get an earworm. I can wake up 'hearing' a song replay in my mind on waking up and then hear the song over and over again on a loop all day. Had perfect pitch until I suffered some hearing loss. The Grateful Dead got their fame and notoriety playing the “Acid Tests” in San Francisco. Not made illegal until 1966, they had a good friend and benefactor in the guise of a fellow named Augustus Owsley, who had a chemist girlfriend, and they made millions of doses of L.S.D. and they dispensed about half of it for free. Rick made a point that essentially bands are morte in rock. All the bands making the top of Spotify playlists are ancient relics of past musical eras. It is all about the individuals and those individual artists are often autotuned and pitch corrected with base tracks to the extent that AI can easily dispense with the singer and just put an AI voice in place with the AI backing track, lyrics, etc. The big streaming services essentially turned music into a commodity. At least if I'm singing along. Marillion's "Brave" is a concept about a suicidal girl about to jump off a bridge (with most of the songs/story being told in flashbacks) has 3 or 4 spots like that. Mostly when it snaps back to the present, and has the girl talking directly to the cops, or her abusive father, etc. I don't know what you're doing here when there's murder on the street. ----- I'll go to my grave believing that MTV could have had a 20-year longer (meaningful) run than they did. They pivoted too fast. There was never going to be a stand-alone model for catering to the music crowd they chose to shift to. The beauty of the original MTV model may have been born out of desperation (the scarcity of usable music videos), but what it gave MTV was a magical platform where in the same single hour one might catch songs by Judas Priest, Linda Ronstadt, Robert Palmer, Michael Jackson, Duran Duran, Run DMC, Krokus, Paul McCartney, and Eurythmics. MTV unplugged was something I think that MTV should have done more of. Instead they went into reality tv hard and destroyed their music brand. At the same time, FM radio, having killed music on AM, suddenly went into corporate ownership which meant the playlists were suddenly the same coast to coast.
Corporations homogenized music and then streaming destroyed the big corporate world of homogenized music. Now AI is likely to maim and destroy streaming. And good unknown bands are struggling to make a buck live while dinosaur big rock bands suck up the scarce dollars for 'live' music to make bucks before they die. The idea was, kinda, the audience was the show. Not everyone enjoyed being dosed unawares. Janis Joplin throttled Bear “You killed my fucking bass player!” because she thought he had dosed him with the stuff. He didn’t die, but he probably thought he was. Driving a U-haul today (local move) and the radio was stuck on a "new country" station. Every song (at least the 4 that I listened to before turning it off) sounded whiny. The 'singers' weren't really singing, just whining rhythmically. And I swear the auto-tune has a setting for "Nasally hillbilly twang". Garth Brooks and Shania Twain killed country music. And they had a lot of help

I think the 'live' show reveals indicate a lot of people are shelling out big bucks for recorded vocals and backing tracks. Fans should be able to sue the acts for fraud. Big names involved and Fil probably is not making many friends in the current music world by posting these exposes.
Posted by: whig at January 10, 2026 09:37 PM (WDjG6) I don't have a problem with backing tracks per se, to provide the sounds that people expect from the album version, if there isn't someone on stage to do it. But if a singer or an instrument is on the stage acting like they're making sounds, then the track for that sound should be off, and the sound that you hear in the PA should be the one being made live on stage. I'm still bitter at learning that "top of the pops" type shows basically force musicians to just mime over a recording, since that's easier for the showrunner. At least with those, I can just treat it like Music Video (Version 2) for the song. There is no excuse that I would accept as valid for doing that in a live show that people bought tickets to attend.
