Thanks to MAHA, Several States Just Implemented Bans on Using SNAP Benefits for Junk Food; also, A Friend of the Blog Is Running for Statewide Office in Nevada

SNAP Benefits.png

Week after week, and on issue after issue, the Trump administration has given voters like me occasion to say, “This is what I voted for.” Here is yet another example.

January 1 marked the commencement of several state-level bans on the use of SNAP benefits (“Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program” ) to purchase junk food. This was made possible by actions of the Trump administration, through the US Department of Agriculture, and in coordination with the Make America Healthy Again initiatives of HHS Secretary Robert Kennedy, Jr.

Specifically, the USDA granted individual states the authority to implement waivers to federal regulations, thus allowing state-level determination of food products which may be considered ineligible for federal SNAP benefits. RFK Jr. was recently quoted as saying, “We cannot continue a system that forces taxpayers to fund programs that make people sick, and then pay a second time to treat the illnesses those very programs help create.”

18 states have taken advantage of this opportunity, and the first junk food prohibitions on SNAP benefits were implemented on January 1, 2026. Those states were Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, Utah, and West Virginia.

“Soda, candy cut for many SNAP users starting January 1. What states are affected?” [USA Today – 12/30/2025]

Millions of SNAP recipients are about to face new limitations on what they can use the federal assistance program to buy, including bans on soda, energy drinks and candy, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

"The Trump Administration is leading bold reform to strengthen integrity and restore nutritional value within the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program," the USDA said in a statement about the upcoming changes.

Should the federal government be telling people what food products they can and cannot consume? Of course not. Individuals can spend their own money on whatever they want. But the taxpayers who are funding SNAP have every right to demand that welfare money not be used on junk food.

"Every American who wants to eat a donut ought to be able to eat it or drink a Coke," Kennedy said in early 2025. "But the federal taxpayer should not be paying to poison our children. And we're going to end that."

13 more states will be rolling out various junk food bans on SNAP benefits later this year, including Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Colorado, Florida, Arkansas, Idaho, Hawaii, Missouri, North Dakota, South Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee.

Companies that have come to rely on the taxpayer-subsidized SNAP revenue stream are not happy.

“Big Sugar Ramps Up Lobbying Efforts as SNAP Soda Ban Spreads” [Bloomberg Government – 7/30/2025]

Food and beverage influence groups boosted lobbying efforts as more than a dozen states seek to block federal food aid recipients from using benefits to purchase sugary products.

The American Beverage Association, which lobbies for Coca-Cola Co., PepsiCo Inc., and other non-alcoholic drink makers, spent $1.7 million in the first half of 2025—more than double its outlay during the same period last year.

Grocery chains also lobbied hard to keep revenue from the taxpayer subsidization of junk food rolling in. A report by the National Grocers Association argued that prohibiting SNAP users from purchasing junk food would cost grocers about $1.6 billion initially, and another $759 million going forward. Apparently, a dollar spent on milk instead of soft drinks hits the income statement differently.

Even if I weren’t still upset at PepsiCo and Coca-Cola for their left-wing activism during the great awokening, I would still find it offensive that these prominent corporations are fighting so hard to be on the receiving end of redistributed taxpayer wealth.

Eighteen states placing restrictions on the use of SNAP benefits to purchase junk food is a great start. Many more need to join this health initiative.

Other Stuff I’m Writing About

My latest piece at The American Spectator has been published, with the title, “The War on Labor Expense is Renormalizing Slavery, Just in a 21st Century Form

If this type of slave labor offends our sensibilities when it occurs in Georgia, why is it acceptable for manufacturing that is outsourced to China to use the same labor system? The acceptance of slave labor anywhere in our supply chain makes the domestic acceptance of slavery possible.

Even the use of foreign children as slave labor is becoming disturbingly common again in the United States. Last summer, a raid on illegal labor at a California marijuana farm resulted in the detention of 10 minors, some as young as 14, all foreign nationals, and some of whom were “unaccompanied.” There are more delicate terms that could be used, but the simple fact is that these children were slaves, living on a marijuana plantation, and being held as chattel by the property supervisor.

This article is not behind a paywall. I’d be honored if you’d give it a read.

A Friend of the Blog (Jeffrey Carter) Is Running for Nevada State Treasurer

Jeffrey Carter.png

Jeffrey Carter, who is a loyal Ace of Spades reader, and who also writes the widely-read and frequently linked “Points and Figures” substack, is running for Nevada State Treasurer.

Jeff and I have become friends over the past few years, and I have come to greatly value his insights. On more than one occasion I have written that Points & Figures is one of the most educational blogs I read. I am also humbled that he has linked and discussed some of my posts over the years.

We became acquainted when Jeff contacted me after I published a piece in 2022 expressing my concern about the WWII Museum in New Orleans going woke, because its new Liberation Pavilion was straying into post-war, civil rights issues. Jeff had served on the board of the WWII Museum and was very respectful of my concerns. He also shared that piece of mine with the then-current members of the museum’s board.

Mr. Carter has a background in commodity trading and venture capital, and as a refugee from Illinois he understands the destruction that Democrats impose when they have unchecked power. He is an unabashed Trump supporter in a circle of people who are often self-muzzled, if not openly hostile to Trump. This is his official announcement: “Jeff Carter for Nevada State Treasurer: Fight Waste & Fraud, Invest Tax Dollars Wisely

A state Treasurer position can be powerful, with control over how money is deposited and invested. Riley Moore (who I first wrote about back in 2022) used his position as West Virginia State Treasurer to start the state-level pushback against woke money managers when he yanked state investments from Black Rock due its anti-carbon political activism. Jeff is also promising to “ensure the Nevada Treasurer’s office isn’t beholden to investing in ESG or DEI projects, allowing it to focus solely on generating the best ROI.” A Democrat Treasurer would never make that promise.

Although my primary interest in Nevada politics is my concern about California expats colonizing the entire western US and imposing woke-sharia, I am proud to endorse my friend Jeffrey Carter in the Republican primary for Nevada State Treasurer. I have contributed to his campaign at this link.

Also liberals: Of course food stamps should be usable for buying sodas, snacks, and other processed foods.

Yup.

"Public assistance" - if we're to have it - *must* come with strings attached, preferably a lot of them. Staying on "public assistance" should *not* be the goal, getting off of it should be. If being on it is necessary for you but unappealing, you'll be more inclined to take steps to get off of it.

So yes. More strings.

I knew it was coming because state is run by a bitch and her republican cronies. it's frustrating that people don't understand how the US economy works. This will force people into poverty.

I learned a prepared salad with a sealed utensil inside is SNAP ineligible…but one without is okay. The hoop jumping is meant to confuse, embarrass and shame.

In my 55 years on this planet I have never once been jealous of the items in someone's shopping cart who was paying with food stamps.

I wish everyone who cared about how strangers spend a small amount of grocery money had that same energy for the literal hundreds of billions the Pentagon mysteriously loses every year. I know they never will.

It should come with mandatory training on how to use the budget you have to create nutrient dense meals. 43 We should return to a biblical method of "SNAP": those in need should be bussed to farmer fields to glean the unharvested bits. And, sure, they can collect bits and pieces of harvested animals. If you don't even want to do that level of work - collecting the food and then cooking it - then, honestly, I don't care if you starve.

As an interim step, the government should return to purchasing staples and handing them out to those currently on SNAP. "Here's your cabbage. Here's your cauliflower. Here's your broccoli. Here's your tripe. Now go feed yourselves."

When you want someone to I dunno cut your grass what do you do? Get 3 bids and pick the cheapest right? This is the same thing but using AI to figure out who will be the cheapest instead of calling around.

Delivering food doesn’t require any specialized skills. You doing it or me doing is the same thing. It’s not like hiring an architect where it’s more than just who is cheapest. So DoorDash figured you’ll do it for $5 but I’ll want $6 so you get it.

The ubiquitous "Coexist" moniker isn't about "all of us getting along."

It is about us, bending to the left so as to not be constantly harassed. They want you to coexist with them, under their terms. There's no middle ground.

If left unchecked, hard, they'll likely subsume the country.

A Denver food pantry does this. They provide nutrition and cooking classes to teach people how to make smart and nutritious choices, stretch meals, etc. They also work hard to stock up with nutritional food, such as trade bakery items from a grocery store with another food bank for fruits/veggies. Very creative.

70 Didnt food assistance start out as boxes of food from the ag department. Cans of peanut butter, some kind of cheese, some surplus grain, probably beans, maybe some canned meat.

This notion that it is wrong to prevent SNAP from being used to buy anything that happens to have calories because 'picking on poor people' is horseshit. Probably young folks and then wine and granola moms who want their kids to have the nutritional advantage over folks that need assistance are the only ones who really oppose letting someone buy gallons of soda pop with those bennies.

If we still want to allow SNAP beneficiaries to get beef, give them the cheapest cuts, like chuck and brisket. They require learning how to cook them properly so they aren't tough. Guess what. Waste and fraud pisses me off regardless of department, and War has plenty of it.

Also, *very* nice retarded framing of the issue, too. Caring "about how strangers spend a small amount of grocery money" is amazing. It's not a small amount, in aggregate (and the government deals in aggregates) and even if it were, if I am a taxpayer, it's *my* money. You're damn right I care about it in that case.

I bet this person cares about *her* grocery money. It's just a "small amount," so why does she care? Why, because it's *hers.*

Like, a cube of cheese, a handful of nuts, or save your hardboiled egg for now or something similar if it's protein you crave then...

My favorite protein bars are RX Bars (they will not taste like cookies!), second is Perfect Bar.

You can also consider a handful of almonds, or sliced apple drizzled with peanut butter powder mixed with water to make it drizzerable. Let’s rework your breakfast, though.

Stop with the oatmeal package and do actual real oatmeal. You can make overnight oats for time so you cut your sugar even more and increase your portion for the same calories. Ditch the light and fit, and eat whole milk or low fat plain Greek yogurt. Add your fruit, stir in raw honey if you need it a little sweeter. You will stay fuller, longer with the added fat.

Do the food diary, and try to eat less per sitting (even if it means 4-5 meals/day vs 2-3). See if that helps in the short term while you wait for the doc.

Also do diary all day b/c it could be late night eating not clearing and thus why lunch is the kicker every day...

130 I'm guessing that the two lezbirds didn't "move" to Canada to escape the reign of Donald. More likely they know someone up there, or connected with some like minded types, crossed the border as tourists, and then illegally overstayed. Probably slept on couches and floors.

I don't know about the MO tag on the SUV, but in a lot of states, you can get a two year tag. Missouri does this.

So, leave MO for Canada, spend 8 months in a crash crib with other lezzies, meanwhile investigating how to get paid as a Trump hating activist in the city with the most fraud happening. Minneapolis!!!

So, what was their combined weekly take, being Soros foot soldiers with nothing but time on their hands, and an SUV for patrolling.

This has been really good. We end up buying just the basics and not a lot of crap. Go in with a small list of items, get that list, leave. In and out in 15 mins.

Also has led to a reduction in wasted food that ends up getting thrown out because it’s forgotten. Oh shit it’s Jan 9, damn this thing expired Dec 14. Because it was put in the back of the fridge and forgotten, Eliminates a lot of that stuff.

141 Very nice.

Where I've seen problems in banning sugary drinks is that it usually includes prohibiting the purchase of juices, juice boxes for children and/or sometimes for the elderly. It can affect school lunches programs. (I think PA may even have round the clock food programs for children of certain families and there's programs such as Meals on Wheels.)
It can even affect where people migrate to. (See Philly's Soda Tax that caused quite a few SNAP users to move into different districts, counties, states where they had easier, more walkable access to grocery stores v. convenience stores at gas stations.)

I have no idea how it works now, but years ago parents or guardians received coupons for milk, orange juice, cheese, some cereals, maybe a few other routine items but nothing for nonfood household supplies, hygiene items, or cleaning products. Sometimes that encourages users to trade or sell off SNAP benefits for cold cash, laundry detergent, diapers, etc. (In other words, it contributes to fraud.)

Also, I'd rather have those trying to stay off of certain street drugs drinking energy drinks than shooting up under the tree on my front lawn.

Why? First off, participation is voluntary; no body is being forced to work for that company. Second, the system is set up as a sort of Dutch auction of your service. If somebody else is willing to take the job sooner for less, you lose that opportunity. If you're willing to take the risk of waiting, you may (or may not) get more later. Assess the market and make your choice.

WIC is for very specific foods only, and certainly not food a 5 year old could prepare alone. Actually, WIC is a great basis for SNAP - it’s veggies, cheese, peanut butter, milk. 3 meals a day at school must be very regional. Alabama schools near me do not do this. I don’t send my kid to public school so no idea of they offer anything other than lunch.

For grocery stores in poorer neighborhoods (and even in some not-poor neighborhoods), the percentage of their sales through SNAP/EBT is probably over 75%.

There's a Western Beef supermarket in the South Bronx that I occasionally shop in. Of the 100s of people I've seen paying over the years, maybe a dozen didn't use EBT.

Incidentally, despite being in a bad neighborhood, the WB has almost no security, nothing is locked up or hard to reach, and it's quiet clean and well stocked. I always wondered how this was possible, as most stores in bad neighborhoods had everything on lockdown.

Then I found out that WB is owned by a notorious mafia family. The thugs know that if you steal from these guys, the cops ain't gonna find your body.

If I have to show up for jury duty, a SNAP recipient can show up for an in-person receipt evaluation before being paid.

As an interim step, the government should return to purchasing staples and handing them out to those currently on SNAP. "Here's your cabbage. Here's your cauliflower. Here's your broccoli. Here's your tripe. Now go feed yourselves."
Posted by: GWB at January 09, 2026 11:13 AM (SpLbr)

Yes. People should not think "filling out forms to take someone else's money" counts as work. Keeping distribution of *some* staples would be fine since it's unlikely you can find flour and cheese and such or the tools to make them in gleanings alone.

193 WIC is for very specific foods only, and certainly not food a 5 year old could prepare alone. Actually, WIC is a great basis for SNAP - it’s veggies, cheese, peanut butter, milk. 3 meals a day at school must be very regional. Alabama schools near me do not do this. I don’t send my kid to public school so no idea of they offer anything other than lunch.
Posted by: Piper at January 09, 2026 11:39 AM (11JP3)

Most schools started in Covid doing the 3 meals/day/365...they still do them in most states...they do a daily pick up at lunch period on normal bus routes in the summer dropping the meals daily here...funny enough, it's not even limited to public schools, but any kid who shows up at the bus...

And yet there's worlds of benefit in crowdsourcing ideas and treatment. It's how I'm still here. I found out what was possible for my cancer, and went and got as much of the solution (although not all of it) that I could.

I can't believe people do NOT crowd source their health when doctors have so little time for their patients...

207 82 Not sure how true it is but I’ve read that Americans throw out about 1/4 of the food we buy. Either from going past expiration dates, throwing out leftovers, buying too many ingredients for meals and then throwing out what’s not used, etc.

I know at my house we certainly do waste a ton of food.

I will admit same here - mainly throwing out leftovers, but produce going beyond usability is also an issue with us. The problem, which is the first step in solving, is J will go to the store and see things that look and sound interesting, and then I will do that as well. Or a farmers market, specialty store, what have you. Or on the night of our preplanned meal, J will not be feeling it and will order food (at least not burgers, typically Thai or Napalese and he knows very precisely what I will eat and what I won’t). Poke bowls are another thing. Anyway, it’s exactly what Elric noted, I know I live a privileged existence, and not in the way the left has usurped it. I am sure if I was on my own with my kid, this would look very different.

So mentioning it here risks boring other people but not so much anyone can employ it against me.

The modern era is an era where privacy is largely an illusion unless you want to go live in the woods, off grid, as a hermit.

Flock cameras and automatic license plate readers plus your cell phone track you everywhere, most big businesses now have face recognizing tech as do big sporting venues, etc. Your bank records and other financial information is on tap for local cops without your say so and that goes for your call records, texts, emails, and posts as well.

And databrokers sell every bit of information that you ever share to get a product warranty, service for cars, etc., the apps on your phone collecting all sorts of info, your browsing history, and that leaves out dataleaks from shitty companies.

245 A gram scale is very useful at tracking calories, and the Nutrition Facts label.

The truth is, humans don’t need a heck of a lot of food to sustain themselves. This number goes down further as we age, or become more sedentary too.

The “2000 calorie” itself RDA is some kind of mythical Unicorn type person who dutifully jogs 5 miles after work every day. At the very least, older sedentary people can get obese on those kind of numbers.

If you keep track of your intake, you’ll soon discover your own personal metabolic rate. “If I eat this much I lose/maintain/gain” It is remarkable what a close run thing this is, and it isn’t very much.

It takes permanent, lifelong changes to the way we approach our “diet”. It is not a temporary thing. I settled into one meal a day because I like large satisfying meals. It works for many. There is no way around calorie restriction, one way or another.

Nobody wants to do that, and of course it shows. Rampant obesity, metabolic syndrome and eventually, full blown Type 2 diabetes. It isn’t too much to ask that those depending on the kindness of strangers for the very fiber of their being stay within the height and weight chart.

263 There's a post on Reddit (of all places) that lays out a timeline of decisions the woman who was killed in MN the other day made.

The gist of it is that she had a kid(s) who relied on her. Instead, she opted to leave them wherever they were that day and participate as an agitator at an anti-ICE protest. She was (allegedly) the lead instigator for that event, being filmed by her wife. While in her SUV she could have stopped, opened the door and got out. She chose.... poorly.

There were a lot of points in time where she could have, if she wanted to, stopped what she was doing.

But didn't. There shouldn't be an ounce of sympathy for this woman.

"Poor" in this country doesn't mean what people think it means. These poor people have cell phones, many have cars, I'm sure they have big-screen TVs and similar luxurious in their homes, and many are overweight they are eating so much.

My immigrant grandfather -- who was dirt poor growing up on the LES back when that was a war zone -- would think these "poor" people are rich.

Media is simply lying as usual. As the facts trickle in, the woman was NOT panicking, had been trained by leftist organizations to stop ICE enforcement, was undoubtedly involved in radical circles from her school to when she was drifting around the nation, and her lifestyle may very well have been financed by leftist oligarchs to cause trouble.

The left has a drifting population of rioters, ballot harvesters, vote fraud, and registering fake voters, rallies, etc. and that political army in waiting does different things through the election cycles depending on the needs of the Dems. Rental cars, lodging, travel expenses, and so on including stipends from various NGOs acting as passthrough and always being on the public dole.

A lot of this poked up during the riots in St Louis over Michael Brown, the George Floyd incident, and during the election fraud season in 2020.

420 I don't see what difference this really makes; you're giving people free money, putting arbitrary restrictions on where it's spent doesn't really solve the problem.

I don’t see the problem with encouraging people to start making money on their own to supplement their real food with junk food.

Making financial decisions like that is deceptively addicting. It can result in waking up years later to discover you’re paying into the system instead of taking out.

Now, Mom could whip up a mean batch of fudge, and make sweet tea or lemonade with stuff allowed under even restrictive EBT guidelines. I knew a gal that had two kids, and I stopped by one time . Single mother working a fair job. She and the kids were having a picnic. Tomato sandwiches with the pretty good gubbmint cheese and some cheapo potato chips. Kool aid or the kids to wash it down. Now, she might have bought the bread, Kool Aid and chips with EBT but she wasn't sending it home for the RPG fund.

490 " I'd wager that many here don't really know many poor people. They certainly get trashed here a lot."

I speak of poor people I DO know. They really don't want to work. imo once they get the Free Stuff the concept of working 40 hours is abhorrent to them, and being poor but online is comfortable.

The actual working poor are different.

491 "the taxpayers who are funding SNAP have every right to demand that welfare money not be used on junk food."

Another thing, if you are buying potatoes and milk and flour and eggs, you'll find each dollar goes much farther, in purchasing calories. Which is the whole fucking point - the idea is these people are starving. That is why they are getting food benefits.

492 Remember Charlotte was soooo dangerous because Heather Hyer dancing on top of a car afterwards as the BLM-ers shouted "Whose streets!! Our streets!!" Triumphant from the melee, was killed as the car she was dancing on was struck by Meds-boy James Fields as he was leaving the scene.

Exactly. The threat of collective punishment worked.

Was poor for a solid part of my teenage years. I missed meals--but other things were involved there as well. Muskegon, Michigan was the hardest-hit city in the 80s Great Recession.

497 Just got back from the confirmation ultrasound. Same as last time, just a depressing hole where Lil Pookette should've been.

Might not hear much from me for the weekend, going to be curled up in Pooky's arms. Thank you for the prayers.

* what whig so eloquently said *

Jeebus, I can't stop crying now since Charlie's assassination and watching The Chosen.

I just turned age 40 in hex (base 16) -- or 64 for those of you who don't do math; maybe there's such a thing as male menopause (although thank the Good Lord the sex drive has remained the same since age 13, occasionally to the consternation of The Wifey)?

/Yeah, I know, TMI ... but what the hell.

499 From above:

RFK Jr. was recently quoted as saying, “We cannot continue a system that forces taxpayers to fund programs that make people sick, and then pay a second time to treat the illnesses those very programs help create.”

502 "A question that I don't see many asking: why did she run?"

People, especially narcissistic females, act very strangely around the police. They panic and say and do stupid shit. They also seem to think legal commands from a police officer are optional, and arguable, things to be debated at length. because this is how they get through their normal lives with other authority figures. They are not used to taking or obeying orders. They expect to be able to yak their way out of any uncomfortable situation.

There are a couple hundred videos online of women turning traffic stops into arrests and even felonies. It's just a sad fact.

Bulg, side effects of metformin are nasty and known. Get your doctor to prescribe something else. There are alternatives.

505 rick, banning soda doesn't mean they'll buy more milk.

especially if they're from a group that doesn't have the genes for tolerating lactose into adulthood.

Which... tends to be almost everyone except those of European descent.

508 It's about freaking time! Have you ever been in a store to see the SHIT foods most people buy with SNAP benefits? Just sit them in a chair and hook up an intravenous bag of cane sugar with some form of unhealthy dye in it. There should be a law requiring 25% less sugar in cereals and drinks by Jan 1,2027 then another 25% by Jan 1 2028. If the GOP can hold on to the fort, then removing sugar by 95% should be the goal by Jan 1 2032. No more zoomie children.

509 When I was a young man just starting out in life with a car payment, a house payment, a baby, working construction ten-hour days six days a week, and going to night school at the local community college,’there was a butcher shop that sold beef heart for (IIRC) about 35 cents a pound. It was the cheapest source of animal protein except for chicken gizzards. The beef heart sliced thin, pounded, dredged in flour,’and pan fri d made great sandwiches.
