Marco Rubio Informs Congress That Trump Wants to Purchase Greenland
Territorial expansion is one way to get yourself into the history books.
NYT:Secretary of State Marco Rubio has told lawmakers that President Trump plans to buy Greenland rather than invade it, while Mr. Trump has asked aides to give him an updated plan for acquiring the territory, U.S. officials said on Tuesday. Mr. Rubio made his remarks in a briefing on Monday with lawmakers from the main armed services and foreign policy committees in both chambers of Congress. The same day, Mr. Trump told aides to deliver an updated plan.The Danish PM has warned that if the US annexes Greenland -- without their permission, I think she means -- then that means the NATO treaty is formally nullified. As many people have said: We accept your terms, now kindly fuck off and join the Greater Islamic Caliphate per your current political trajectory.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is warning that NATO itself would collapse if the United States moved to forcibly annex Greenland--an extraordinary escalation in rhetoric that underscores Europe's growing anxiety over President Trump's sharpened focus on the Arctic. Frederiksen told POLITICO that Trump should be taken "seriously when he says that he wants Greenland," a position rooted in the island's immense strategic value and its vast mineral reserves. But she went further, issuing what amounted to a dire warning for the transatlantic alliance: "If the U.S. chooses to attack another NATO country militarily, then everything stops, including NATO and thus the security that has been established since the end of the Second World War." Trump has made clear that securing Greenland is a matter of national security, given its location at the front door of the Arctic--a region where America's adversaries have been expanding their footprint. And while he hasn't ruled out military action, the White House signaled this week that force is hardly the only tool available. Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller told CNN there was "no need to even think or talk about" a U.S. operation against Denmark, citing the island's population of just 57,000. "Nobody is going to fight the US militarily over the future of Greenland. That doesn't make any sense," he said, before questioning Denmark's historic claim altogether. "What right does Denmark have to assert control over Greenland? What is their basis of having Greenland as a colony of Denmark?"I think the whole idea is nuttier than a Snickers bar but Trump has had nutty ideas before and some of them have worked out. (Other remain nutty.) In related news, Marco Rubio has publicly denied rumors that he's being offered the GM job with the Miami Dolphins. That said, I don't think that's really Marco Rubio. But I thing it makes for a fun post.

I don't believe there's a mechanism within NATO to eject a member who attacks another NATO member. It's not an Article 5 violation, as that covers attacks from outside NATO. If the annexing isn't violent, there would be even less reason to dissolve NATO.

Yeah everyone is acting like wanting Greenland is this new crazy nonsense by Trump but its been more than half a century we have wanted it as the USA. And it makes sense, from a strategic point of view, it allows us to cut off Europe entirely and not need the bases there as much. It's not different than the Carlson thing... if you watch a person shed skin like a snake every few years and emerge as a completely different person, you should recognize them for the centerless grifters they are, and categorically ignore whatever they say.
If they happen to be right about some given topic, it's coincidental to their own interests being served, and it's entirely disingenuous - if they feel saying the exact opposite thing better serves them, they'll say it with seeming conviction the very next day.
It's just not worth the time or effort to hear them out. There are other people who are right (or wrong, for that matter) without being a cheesy fuckin' scammer nobody can trust.

It's really a very simple reason. Right now Russia has a very strategic position in the Arctic Sea. We don't but Greenland does. The Arctic Sea is increasingly important for trade but particularly national security.
Trump does some things that at first seem goofy because they aren't talked about in the media or traditional political debate but this is a well know issue in national security circles.

I suspect the plan is to get the Danes to agree to ice out Red China and grant the US preferential treatment on resource exploitation.
The big, noisy threat: annexation.
The more palatable but still very politically-difficult (for both sides) position: purchase and transfer.
The compromise solution: no access to our enemies, access for ourselves.

The regime dying is why it can't either protect its own assets because it is trying stave off total death in the streets or it is trying to kill its own citizens by denying power, light, and heat.
That simply enrages people already in teh street and that shuts down a lot of the ways that the regime uses to identify and stop protesters.

It’s too hot then. Even in the arctic it gets warm-ish in summer. 24 hour sun isn’t exactly conducive to good ski conditions.
There is some year round skiing on glaciers in the Alps and Whistler sometimes. but it’s pretty shitty conditions. People do it just to do it (hey I skied in July!!). It’s limited terrain like a run or two.
Alyiaska the big resort in Alaska is right at 60 degrees north and they close in April or May since it gets too warm past that.

GL is a bit of an odd topography for top quality skiing. It has huge elevation with ice and glaciers (over 12k feet), but the average height isn’t much more than Vermont. It’s like Antarctica only not as high.
Of course, the best skiing is often about snow quality, and I have no idea the quality in GL. Could be awesome. Could be shit. But I’d love to ski it!

Well, you were the last ones to call upon it, and Denmark not only sent men to the worst places to fight, at one point in Afghanistan had lost more men per head of population than any other country.
I know eaten bread is soon forgotten but this is a disgraceful way to treat people whose sons and daughters died for you.
As for Stephen Miller, I know he probably lacks the capacity to understand irony but 'what right does Denmark have to Greenland?' is a ridiculous question for an American to ask.
