Top Story

AMD's VP of its client division has hinted that AM4 might see a return. (Tom's Hardware)

Socket AM4 runs on DDR4 memory, where AM5 is DDR5 only. And DDR4 memory hasn't increased in price as much as DDR5, but more importantly, people already have it.

Several AM4 chips are still in production, but some of AMD's most popular CPUs like the 5700X3D and 5800X3D were cancelled because the competed too well with newer models, while others like the 5600X3D and 5700G were never widely available in retail channels.

Don't expect anything actually new, but a return of the 5800X3D would be welcome.
AMD also hinted at open-sourcing FSR4 upscaling. (Tom's Hardware)

They accidentally made the code public for a short ehile, which quickly led to experimental backports that supported RDNA3 and even RDNA2 graphics cards.

How about an overpriced keyboard for that new computer you can't build? The Asus ROG Falchion Ace 75 is a 75% mechanical keyboard for $219. (Tom's Hardware)

It's... Okay, I guess. It has the Four Essential Keys but that's no great achievement in a desktop keyboard. It has a "programmable touchbar" but that just means you can change what it does; you can't change the display.
Corsair's Galleon 100 SD has a 1280x720 display. (Notebook Check)

Strange thing: It's another keyboard.

It's ten-keyless, which is to say, it has no numeric keypad.

But in its place it as twelve fully programmable keys - with LCD keycaps, the aforementioned 1280x720 display (I'm not sure it's really 1280x720 because the article also says it's a 5" screen and it's definitely not that big) and two small rotary dials. A mini Stream Deck built right into your keyboard.

At $350 it is very not cheap though. You can get 16GB of RAM for that. Or a Corsair TKL keyboard like the K70 and a Stream Deck.
AMD has announced its P100 series of embedded Ryzen chips. (Serve the Home)

These are identical to existing Zen 5 desktop and laptop chips - including embedded version of the Strix Halo AI processer - but the family includes models rated for industrial and automotive conditions (-40C to 105C) and for operating 24/7 for ten years.

Gonna be a while till I make that jump was almost everything at stately VIA Manor is either 2.4 cameras, Amazon echo and plug device, and a smattering of IoT stuff like weather station, Roku, a single television and so forth.

Still would like to move forward on a simple home media server setup, but sort of letting that ferment in my brain for a bit.

14 Evening and morning to all the AoSHQ satellites on Earth or in space! Here I am again, even earlier than yesterday, wide-eyed as a marigold. And I can't blame the cats. They were sleeping calmly next to me, one on each side, when I snapped awake for no reason after four hours' sleep. Gah.

Thanks to those who suggested I install AVG virus protection on the PC laptop. I also downloaded the Mac version for my MacBook Air and the desktop. Last night it caught what it called an infected website and kept me from opening the page. Good job.

If AMD put out a 5900X3D or 5950X3D I'd probably buy one.

It's be a downgrade for me to go to a 5800X3D, but they are the best gaming CPU from AM4.

I like at least 12 cores for work stuff, so going down to 8 cores wouldn't be practical.

I doubt they'd add 3D V-Cache on to the dual CD model CPUs, though, as that'd be a lot of extra work for them, but the 5800X3D, along with its cut-down brothers the 5600X3D and 5700X3D, can be easily put back in production.

24 So, now we have two cars out of three on the road. Husband got a new tire for the one that had a slow leak. The other one which is driveable
but had no heat we are getting checking out toay.

This was on my mind yesterday,, but I did ask as I do everyday "Show me something good and of yourself today" and I am grateful that God answered my prayer. There was a man in the coffee shop who had a lovely cross inlaid with some sort of greenish stone. I told him I appreciated his witness to the Lord, and he said "It's all we have."

Then I had my Bible study with the dear folks at the Senior center. We talked about Epiphany and Matthew 2:1-12 and sang "We three kings". I had two new ladies attending- maybe because it was at 1:30 and not at 6:30. It was a blessed day!

Thanks, Skip. Yeah, I can catch up on sleep this pm and tonight. The surgical incision hurts a little when I move my face or eat, but I've had worse headaches. I am worried I'm going to lose a little hair when I take off the current bandage -- but I'm hoping shampoo and water will help with that. When I put a new one on I'll trim down the adhesive part to keep it off my hair this time. Then today I'll visit the pharmacy at Target and ask their advice on what bandages to get.

Semi-joking; I've owned two cats in my adult life; one a tabby that I picked up from a SSG in Germany when he got a divorce, the other a blue-point Siamese that we got around 3 years after the tabby died on New Years Day. I miss both of them (still have their ashes, as it so happens; not sure what the hell I'm going to do with them before I check out of the net), but I'm old enough that a new cat's end-of-life could well be close to my own (or my wife's) and at least one of us won't like the endgame of that scenario.

I have the ashes of all my cats with the exception of long-lived Arizona. His ashes I scattered up in the Colorado mountains where bobcats roam. I always figured he thought he should have been one, and somebody at The Cat Factory made a mistake, gave him a long tail, and sent him to live with me.

54 I'll simplify AMD's naming scheme:

All Ryzen CPUs have two CCDs (compute dies) with 8 processor cores each for a full 16 cores.

Making silicon chips is hard, so if the slightest thing goes wrong in production the cores won't work.

To keep from throwing away a lot of 16 core CPUs that are defective, the CPU corps cut down the cores in a process called 'binning' which means that they can sell several models according to working core counts.

So for the 5000 series of Ryzen CPUs there are three tiers:
5600 = 6 working cores on one of the CCDs, the other two cores and the 8 cores on the other CCD are all disabled.
Thus a cheaper model.
5700, 5800 = 8 working cores on one CCD.
5900 = 12 working cores, 6 on each CCD.
5950 = All 16 cores working.

A 5600X is just a better die, so they can get more speed out of it, along with a 5700X, 5800X, 5900X, 5950X.

X3D means they have added more memory cache onto the die so that the CPU has to use RAM less frequently and can access data off of the die itself. This means higher performance in gaming, but it can also cause less performance in productivity applications.

Newer Ryzen 7000 & 9000 series desktop CPUs are similar but more refined.

Sensible. My 10D black cherry Dan Posts are excellent, and I'd have purchased another pair. But I wanted a lighter color. And even their website, as well as Boot Barn and Cavender's, had only black and shades of dark brown. These new ones are their upper-level Cody James Black 1978 model in a "cognac" color, with the boot tips a bit darker. Should be a nice combo with jeans or casual slacks.

Having a few problems with them though.
1. Too noisy so sleeping with it is a problem.
2. Has to be two feet off the floor, not on wood and you can't put a towel underneath because of the fan.

So until I find something that overcomes those limitations, I am resigned to expelling blood clots from my nose when I wake up.
