Continuing from the ONT, if you want to understand why Trump is so hot and bothered about Greenland, it's China. China is making aggressive moves in the High North. Take a gander at a polar map (standard Mercator is useless) to see what the top of the world looks like. Just last year, the Chicoms successfully transited under the ice cap via submarine. That is not good for US National Security. They've been making aggressive moves to become a polar player. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at January 05, 2026 04:18 AM (w6EFb) 18

Greetings and good morning one and all. So for tech related stuff, my wife's laptop is in for repair. The port to plug the power supply pretty much decided to quit. We did some diagnostic work first with getting a new power supply which was no easy feat since this is an Omen laptop and the power brick is a big one.
That didn't solve it so she took it in to a shop last month. We hadn't heard anything so I pushed her to call the place on Friday. Turns out that the tech she talked to did not enter the fact that she authorized repairs and the replacement port was not ordered. The manager called her, apologized for the confusion and not only ordered the part but gave her a discount on the repair. Posted by: NR Pax at January 05, 2026 05:24 AM (BpO1e) 49

I don't worry about China in the Arctic. China is getting Imperial Overstretch. The Belts and Roads projects are getting the Chinese actively hated by everyone not bribed in the host nation. Their QA is crap on big projects. All their investment in Venezuela is gone. The debts incurred there should not be repaid. It was in oil mostly anyway. I always enjoy the movies with historical stuff. I thought this had an interesting plot line, good character development and pacing. The focus was on Hermann Goering. The part was played by Russell Crowe and he was excellent. There was an engaging scene where he and an American psychologist get into a back and forth regarding the morality of the camps vs the use of atomic weapons. Posted by: NR Pax at January 05, 2026 05:24 AM (BpO1e) Those ports can become a problem since we plug/unplug them a lot. It's why I'm not so crazy about so many laptops using USB-C for power delivery. Those USB-Cs are only rated for so many plug/un-plugs and on a laptop battery port that can add up quick. My older Lenovo from 2021 was having problems with the USB-C getting loose, and causing problems with CPU/GPU speeds because it was running on battery without me knowing it. Everybody be careful out there if your laptop uses USB-C, because those port connections will get worse over time. Getting a discount was nice, I'd stick with them for future work if this repair turns out well. Posted by: SpeakingOf at January 05, 2026 05:40 AM (6ydKt) 60

Sucks to be Xi and Vlad, though. Little Marco has grown up to be about the best Sec of State in a long time. He wears I forget how many hats, but the other big one is National Security Advisor. Now, you know who was the last Sec State to wear that dual hat? Henry Kissinger. That's the level Little Marco is operating at. Posted by: Common Tater at January 05, 2026 *** My suspicion is that the $15/lb. stuff is actually cigarette tobacco -- or something that could easily be used for hand-rolled ciggies -- but labeled as pipe tobacco to avoid certain taxes. The $150/lb. is about $9/oz., so that works out to current prices for a 1.75 or 2.0 oz. tin. And the cost of the tin figures into the price, I guess. The inexpensive stuff is usually available in bags and is cut finer, too, thus the fast burning. There's a TV repair place not far from me. A large part of his business is people giving him the dead TV when they decide it's a better use of their money to get a new one. He then fixes them and sells them. He doesn't charge himself for labor and the fix is often fairly simple if you're comfortable with dealing with wave soldered components. A specialty is refurbing old CRT type TVs that now have a market among retro gamers who like the authentic appearance and some accessories like light guns require a CRT with scan lines to use for sync. You can find a lot of videos on YouTube of people who have similar businesses showing how they do a repair. Posted by: Epobirs at January 05, 2026 06:27 AM (/0z9K) 116
Deke Slayton or somebody like that secretly included 3 small bottles of cognac or something like that as a surprise in the rations of the Apollo 8 crew. The mission commander, Frank Borman was kind of a no nonsense kind of guy and wasn’t having any of it and determined that no, we’re not risking any flub ups. I think those would be collectible by now, I think they were saved though not sure if they are all together.

One of the better experiences was working on the office PC and Blackberry for a woman who was doing some of the work mastering the first batch of Blu-rays for the upcoming launch. She was very up on the technical details and seemed really glad of my interest.
She agreed that Sony knowingly pushed for the delay in the DRM that caused Microsoft to drop using HD-DVD as the native disc format in the Xbox 360 and just going with DVD to meet the intended launch date for the console. This meant they had substantially less room on a single disc than the Blu-ray using PS3, causing games like Final Fantasy 13 to have 720p FMV sequences to save space. They later switched in the 1080p versions for the backward compatible version on Xbox One and Series X/S. Posted by: Epobirs at January 05, 2026 07:00 AM (/0z9K) 143

The power supply has always been on the lowest rung of the design coolness hierarchy. Always considered "low risk" by snobby designers. Rust isn't a line-per-line or even though-per-thought parallel of c/c++. Maybe they can swap out black-box per black-box, but Rust would still be on a c/c++ architecture (as far as memory management in the macro sense) Usually when making such huge changes, there is also an opportunity to revisit why this twenty year old piece of code is still kicking around. But then you have a myriad of problems due to the fact that Windows philosophy is to be able to run software written back in the days of Windows XP. The "West Co" thing reminds me a *bit* of an interview I read about a decade ago with the inventors of two key social media things: the 'like' button (Facebook) and the "pull-down-to-refresh" behavior (Twitter).
Both deeply lamented their inventions. Both thought they were neat. It was a Jurassic Park "you were so caught up in wondering if you could that you never stopped to consider whether or not you should" thing. At least one of those guys (the "pull-down-to-refresh guy") had quit in horror after seeing what he had wrought, and retreated from society altogether as a form of both self-punishment and to protect society from himself. Virtually everyone in Silicon Valley needs to follow his example. for what it's worth, Microsoft put out a statement saying the convert everything to Rust claim was bullshit. It simply doesn't make sense as chunks of the code base get replaced with other code as old APIs are deprecated. Stuff written in the 90s, if it followed the guidelines stringently, still runs fine but it isn't worth the hassle to keep that in core Windows when it can be run in a VM as needed. Remember XP mode? The exoWin3x and exoWIN9x collections I mentioned the other day are good examples. It's far easier to handle niche cases of really old stuff that way.

NYC MAYOR MAMDANI'S HOUSING OFFICIAL: "YOUR HOME SHOULDN’T REALLY BE YOURS" According to Cea Weaver, a top housing advisor for NYC Mayor Mamdani, the idea of owning your home the way people always have is outdated. She says we’ve treated property as something personal for “centuries,” and now it’s time to see it as “collective.” Her words? Families (especially white ones, of course) need a “different relationship to property.” In other words: stop thinking of your house as yours, and start thinking of it as something shared. This isn’t a fringe activist on TikTok. This is a person in charge of housing policy for New York City. Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at January 05, 2026 07:51 AM (a4flb) ++++ Partly. It gets a tad too much credit for that. But porno *did* eliminate the early aughts "format war" between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. Blu-Ray was superior but much more expensive. A big chunk of the porno industry decided to back Blu-Ray and made it very clear that they were doing so to short-circuit the nascent battle between the technologies by picking the winner. It was very likely an illegal cartelization, but it worked and worked quickly. The only major outfit left backing HD-DVD was Microsoft, which dropped it into their X-Box that generation. No, they did not. There was an accessory HD-DVD drive for the Xbox 360 but it was never the native drive in the console. It was intended to be as Toshiba's design allowed existing DVD disc manufacturing to be easily converted and the hardware ready for market sooner. Then Hollywood (including studio owner Sony) announced that the DRM wasn't good enough and the launch of HD-DVD and Blu-ray had to be put off for most of a year. This suited Sony fine because they'd fucked up big time in the early design phase of the PS3 and had to start over after it became clear the original concept was unworkable. Posted by: Epobirs at January 05, 2026 08:10 AM (/0z9K) ++++ Right, it was an add-on. I forgot about that. HD-DVD had a lot going for it on the manufacturing side and much cheaper. Originally, the CELL chip was supposed to scale in multiples very well and be inexpensive enough to base a machine around the idea. No dedicated GPU or audio. You'd just have 4-6 CELL chips in the box and developers would allocate processing to each task as they saw fit for their project. Then the news came from IBM that yields sucked, they couldn't get it to scale worth a damn past two sockets, and it was going to be pricey. Oops.
They then got on the phone with Nvidia and made a deal for a chip that would be a cut down version of what was soon headed to the PC market. The game console didn't need stuff required for a PC, mainly for backward compatibility, so that could be excised to save cost. Thus when they had the first demo of the 'PS3' at E3, it didn't actually exist yet. There was no board combining the chip set yet in existence for devs to use. So the demos were CELL demos and Nvidia demos running on a PC. This meant the PS3 wasn't going to launch in 2005, so delaying Blu-ray and HD-DVD for a DRM system Hollywood would accept worked in their favor to make Microsoft also delay or give up having HD-DVD as a native feature.
