Speaking of wallabies, apparently one got loose in New Jersey on New Year's Eve. I hate when that happens.

210 There is this remarkable package available for free called exoDOS. It attempts to collect every MS-DOS game ever produced, mainly the commercial releases with some of the better shareware items. Everything runs in a VM, so it generally just works.

You get it by torrent. There are two versions. The one with EVERYTHING is nearly 700GB. The other choice, at a mere 7GB, has full listings with cover art and screenshots, along with info. You download just the games you choose, with the largest being early CD-ROM releases around 600MB for a full CD. This works through a built-in torrent client and is fairly effortless.

This is simultaneously really cool and a reminder of how horrible gaming on DOS was. Especially compared to machines like the Amiga.

There is also an exoWIN3x project doing the same for early Windows, with a wider range of items beyond games. It is unfortunately an all or nothing proposition at this point. You have to do a 345GB torrent with no other option currently. There is also a exoWIN9x project happening. This is being broken up into multiple volumes, with the first covering 1995 and 1996. This is 662 games in a 262GB torrent.

224 I finally got around to installing the 9070 XT along with the new CPU cooler and PSU yesterday afternoon.

Thankfully, I didn’t have to remove the motherboard to install the new cooler, as I was afraid of. It’s an AMD motherboard so all I had to do was change the mounting brackets next to the CPU slot out and it all went perfect. OK, almost perfect until I realized I’d left the protective peel over the heatsink and had to uninstall/reinstall because of that little booboo.

Then I almost had a panic attack when I tried to install the 9070 XT. I had madd sure the one I bought fit the length of my case, and on paper it does. But trying to get it in took about 10 minutes of maneuvering it just right to get it in the box and into the slot before finally settling in with a few millimeters between the front of the card and the front 140mm fans. Whew!

I definitely couldn’t fit a larger card in this mATX case if I wanted too.

All’s well.
Tested Cyberpunk benchmark and got very playable framerates at 1440p and 2160p without ray tracing on, and passable fps with RT on. Turn FSR4 on at ‘Quality’ and she runs even better.

Next is the new Indiana Jones game once I clear some space and DL it.

He informed me that Nicolás Maduro has been arrested by U.S. personnel to stand trial on criminal charges in the United States, and that the kinetic action we saw tonight was deployed to protect and defend those executing the arrest warrant

This action likely falls within the president’s inherent authority under Article II of the Constitution to protect U.S. personnel from an actual or imminent attack

A handsome compliment, Speaking! I'm honored. (If you're gonna steal, steal from the best.) The parody came out in paperback in '84. I don't know much about Frank Herbert's background. But I suspect that his use of Moslem stuff in the original novel was an original move in 1963, when he submitted it to Campbell at Astounding. There had been a slew of interstellar empires based on the Roman model. This setup was exotic and fresh.

It’s RAM (Random Access Memory) that your CPU needs to do fast calculations, as opposed to storage (hard drives or solid state drives) that hold all of hour data.

RAM is the long sticks that slot into the (usually) four slots next to the CPU on a motherboard.

They are thin cards with memory modules on them and these days are covered up with heatsinks. About 8 inches long.

Posted by: SpeakingOf at January 03, 2026 07:26 AM (6ydKt)

260 Oops -- Astounding became Analog in 1960, so Herbert's novel appeared under that banner in 1963-64 and '65.

I read that Herbert was inspired by some sand dunes/desert in Oregon and that’s when he decided to set it on a desert planet, which naturally inspired the Islam/Middle Eastern motiff.

It’s definitely the odd-man out in sci-fi.

262 I have to admit I do not have a copy of Dune and have not read the original all through in years. The parts that stick with me are the big action pieces: the first encounter with a sandworm, Paul & his mother being kidnapped to be left to die in the desert and their escape, etc.

264 I really enjoyed Dune (the book) as a kid, and reading the book was the only way to make any sense out of the movie.

When I heard that Hollywood had remade Dune, I paid to see it in a theater. The remake was massively disappointing. They viewed Frank Herbert's writing as mere suggestions, and cast Chani as an angry feminist who frequently and publicly went off on angry rants against her husband, and openly doubted his leadership.

And that's what I get for giving money to Hollywood.

Posted by: Sam Adams at January 03, 2026 07:43 AM (X+xvk)

265 @254/TeeJ: "Is a computer question okay on this thread?"

Absolutely.

{ When you speak of buying "memory," what does that consist of physically? }

Go onto Wikipedia and search the following:

DDR5_SDRAM

On that page you'll see a picture (front and back) of a current assembled DDR5 memory stick, which consists of surface mounted memory chips.

If you follow the predecessor links on each page, you can see the assembled memory sticks of previous generations (DDR4, DDR3, etc...)

SODIMM packages are basically the same thing in a smaller package for laptop computers.

Memory is volatile, meaning that when the power is removed, it doesn't hang on to whatever values were stored in it.

Long term storage (that retains what's on it when power is removed) can also be memory-chip based, but it's a different kind of memory chip: NAND flash. You see these in solid-state drives that come in many physical forms. Of course there's also traditional "spinning rust" (hard drives with spinning platters that the data is encoded on magnetically) but we're getting off in the weeds here.

That help?
