How a Cat Works ![]() This is Tuck, plotting mischief - which often means blocking the TV. But we're fond of him, anyhow. Reine Tuck looks like a wonderful cat! Great photo. ![]() Attached are the pair of felines we are the unrecognized staff for. The white one is Ghost (obviously) and is the most chill cuddle-slut ever found. The black one is Naz-gul and has the worst case of PTSD ever seen in four legs. I fear someone tried to drown him as a kitten as the mere sound of a trash bag opening causes him to flee. He is adjusting to us, and is incredibly jealous, to the point (as you see) that if Ghost is getting pets he will try to forcibly insert himself. I lurk as Xenophon. Be safe and warm.A wonderful pair, with personalities! Thanks for the photo. I'm glad that the black cat figured out how to swim and the moron cats are adorable!

It was ten years ago today that we adopted a 2-year old Cane Corso. She's still with us, as noble a beast as has ever existed. I wish I'd thought ahead and sent in a photo. I will next week. The big beast is currently barking at the recidivist crows who keep landing on "her" fence. 140 pounds of unadulterated love and loyalty.

vmom,
I had that happen with my springer once and it turned out to be a high fever. never figured out what caused it. now, he has problems with the noises the computer and phone make. Anything with a high bing noise freaks him out. He was trembling over notifications on the computer the other day. I think it's related to the vestibular problem. I suspect that it makes him more sensitive to noises. I have found that DMSO helps, so try to use that whenever he has an issue. Your dog is so much younger, it's hard to say what causes it. Some of our little kittens (brought from somewhere else by their mama) were missing for a couple of days, but now they, and she are all in the garage. We are trying to socialize them, and we can even touch the little black one now.

sitting at the computer with a cat lying across my lap, directly in the path of the warm air from a space heater. So I'm doubly warm. If I turn the heater off, he leaves. When he hears it go on, he comes back.

no, I get 70% DMSO, mixed with aloe vera. Since the vestibular issue is with his brain, I clean his temples and apply some to the clean area. it's good for pain issues too. By the way, it's useful to have on hand, in cause of stroke. It can prevent a lot of the damage of a stroke, if used early enough. That's why I tried it on the dog.
Posted by: notsothoreau at January 03, 2026 03:57 PM (+mUZM) 22
It's important to clean the area where you apply DMSO as it will take anything on the skin into the bloodstream. You just want to make sure there's no chemicals there.

I am not sure how long it will last but I seem to have a new stray cat. This one looks young and I am not sure of the sex. First I knew about it was when I was getting Jake ready to go out back. There was a black and white cat on the porch, looking in the door. Jake freaked out, of course. It has been eating where I put the food and sleeping in that area. Seems to leave for a bit during the day. Mr Troubles doesn't seem overly bothered by it.

The threads today, and Scott Adam’s’ story have got me to thinking about Dilbert and Dogbert.
Dogbert: “I have decided that from now on, when I find someone to be tedious and annoying, I shall not engage with them, I shall simply say “Bah!!!” Dilbert: “Don’t you think that’s just a bit extreme?” Dogbert: “Bah!” Posted by: Tom Servo at January 03, 2026 04:28 PM (KVmIX) 29

Posted by: nurse ratched at January 03, 2026 *** Miss Linda keeps saying that Stirling the big black cat has a sad expression on his face. I say all black cats look like that. Marie-Antoinette looked fussy at times and bothered -- but she was the happiest (and smartest) cat I've ever known. Pynchon, our black cat is 12. He seems to be meowing more in his old age and greets us when we come downstairs in the morning or come back into the living room. Although he has times when he gets zoomies and races up and down the stairs or bats little jingly balls around , he is perfectly content in the winter to sit on husbands lap on a blanket for hours at a time. So far this afternoon's he's been sitting there for about four hours. I think he also likes the party if the couch closest to the arm because if husband is not around he'll sit there as well.

As for my furry thugs: Stirling did not wake me up this morning by leaping back and forth across me in the bed. In fact he didn't do any of that, but was quite glad to see me when I did get up.
So was little Dagny. She, I've mentioned here this week, has been allowing herself to be a lap cat -- after a fashion. When she is sleeping on the chair or kitchen counter extension, I scoop her up, keeping her on her side, then sit on the couch. Linda slips a cushion onto my lap, and I place her on it. Three times this week she stayed, rolling on her back for petting, for nearly five minutes each time. If I keep doing this nearly every day, well, who knows, in five or ten years she may stay for *ten* minutes at a time! Winning!
