Happy Birthday, Uncle Mike!
Uncle Mike was my maternal grandfather’s older brother. His birthday was Jan 1. Every year, he had an open house. Folks would come and go, the Rose Bowl would be on. People would nosh on one folks food and the adults would get totally lit up. Open bar set up on a towel on the washer/dryer off the kitchen. Several plastic gallons of booze. Ice in a bucket. A few mixers. Serve yourself. Kids snuck drinks. Played croquet in the rain in the back yard. Tromped through the living room to the couch to gorge on chips and dip and Vienna sausages. He made it to 104. Never had kids. I miss him. Posted by: nurse ratched at January 01, 2026 01:48 PM (IhIKR) 38

Posted by: toby928(c) at January 01, 2026 01:37 PM (jc0TO) It is not hard, it just takes persistence. I used a leather pouch and 550 cord. The pouch was just a square chunk of leather slit on the ends with holes in each "finger" so it would stack when I threaded it with the cord. There is no right way of doing it. It was mostly to flip rocks. I used it a lot when I was rehabbing from a broken shoulder to make sure I was getting good rotation and rebuilding flexibility Look up "shepherd sling" or "Balearic sling" for patterns. like The Beach Boys said 'Be true to your school' Posted by: Don Black. Message: at January 01, 2026 01:53 PM In my opinion, NIL and transfer portal have ruined college sports. Especially NIL. College sports used to be about players choosing schools based on the school legacy or the good coach. And the focus was on playing for the school. Now, after NIL and transfer portal, the focus is on which school can offer the most NIL money. And the players play for the money and that's it. School pride, coaches, fans do not matter anymore. Show me the money is now the motto of college sports. That is also the case for professional sports for the past 2-3 decades now. Which is why I no longer root for any teams or players. Since players don't care about the team or the cities in which they play or the fans who watch them. Money is all that matters. Turnover on downs at Tech 23 on failed 4th and 1. Turnover on downs at Tech 2 on failed 4th and 2. Turnover on downs at Tech 33 on failed 4th and 2. Dominating time of possession 2:1 (23:31 to 9:56) Dominating plays 53 to 28 Dominating yardage 207 to 80. Yet, with one good TD drive, Tech could take lead. A friend of mine traded another kid for a crossbow when we were about 13 or 14. It didn't come with any crossbow bolts, but we did find some long (12" or so) bolt bolts (the normal threaded kind) in the junk.
They fit, and who gave a shit if they were slightly bent? Bolts is bolts, right? Yeah, we really wanted to shoot this thing. First shot, the bent bolt goes flying off in a completely random direction and goes right through the wall of his mobile home like it wasn't even there. Outer sheet metal, inner simulated wood paneling? Crossbow doesn't give a fuck. We were suitably impressed by the power of the bow, but concerned about the inevitable, and memorable, ass kicking that was sure to arrive courtesy of my friend's father (this was before Modern Parenting forbade ass kickings, even if the kid does something monumentally stupid like shooting a hole in the trailer house). Fortunately, the outer hole was in a patch of overgrowth at the corner where the homemade carport attached to the trailer, and the inner hole was in the back of my friend's bedroom closet. As far as I know, the old man never noticed that the trailer had one more hole than it came from the factory with. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at January 01, 2026 02:32 PM (IG3/x) 170
Yes and no. The culture he denigrates produced the inventors of basically everything the Asians are now iterating on. It’s OK to have high school football *and* top mathematicians. We’re America, dammit.
1) It's not denigration to point out the flaws, which are very real. The culture that produced those things is not, in many cases, the culture of today. The Asians are iterating, but in many cases, they're threatening to take the lead. Besides, there are a whole lot of them, and they're smart and hardworking. Just because we led 50 years ago, doesn't mean we always will. 2) It IS okay to have both. He was saying that if you focus on trivial pursuits to the exclusion of the important stuff, that's not okay. Posted by: Archimedes at January 01, 2026 02:32 PM (Riz8t) 171

I've received a flood of heartfelt inquiries about @VDHanson, and respond on my own accord, being clear that I'm not relaying official news about Victor, as I've not been deputized to say anything or to offer an update. However, I will say that what Victor endured this past Tuesday was indeed quite major surgery, and with that comes serious post-op procedures, tests, etc. That is ongoing. Whether or not the surgery has proven successful (which is the objective of the avalanche of prayers that have already come Victor's way -- of which he is very aware and deeply moved) is still to be determined, and such news Victor will share at his discretion. That said, if you are amenable to continued prayers for Victor as he recovers, then please do offer them. India has the births so far and has probably exceeded China's population by now. However, it lacks cohesion as a nation due to the sheer multitude of ethnicities, religions, etc. and the instability from living next to Pakistan, Bangladesh, and China. On top of that, you have the caste system and Hinduism for the top Brahmin caste that means disdain and dislike for any of the other castes. So you get a hodge podge of pockets of wealth along with pockets of extreme poverty. We shall see if India, unlike China, can beat the middle income trap for nations. Launching satellites has gone from a technological tour de force that requires the resources of an advanced nation to something that's as routine as loading boxes on a semi trailer. Musk launched over 3,000 of 'em in 2025. Nearly 60 per week. On the other hand, he didn't play football in high school. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at January 01, 2026 02:59 PM (IG3/x) 244

And has been uncovered this past year, it has become a huge kickback scam, where H1bs are required to give back part of their salary to the hiring manager. That Walmart IT executive was recently prosecuted for doing this: after he was hired, he replaced ALL of the US employees with Indians, each one giving him $$, so that he was getting $30k in kickback daily. He made that comment last Christmas during the H1B discussion, defending the hiring of Indians. As has been pointed out since then, Americans that DO work hard, who DO pursue STEM degrees and want very much to achieve great things are being systematically shut out via foreigners getting preferential admissions at elite universities, getting preferential hiring at graduation thanks to OPT, and those who have gotten good jobs are laid off when an Indian executive is hired, such as Fedx, Walmart, etc...
We are long past calling this an 'Americans are slackers' issue. Posted by: Lizzy at January 01, 2026 02:44 PM Absolutely this. I can vouch that this is happening at Stellantis and is likely happening at every other American automotive company and supplier as well. Posted by: Archimedes ========= His diagnosis is basically stupid. The reason why Americans by and large are not going into STEM is because Americans that spend the time and effort to get real credentials from a university and incur debt to do so are shunted to the side by Megacorps and Indian hiring manager favoritism by H1b and foreign hires or the jobs are outsourced wholesale to foreign nations like China or India (who promptly steal the IP and then compete). The American responses of top students are rational. Go to law, sales, etc. or licensed trades instead of STEM in order to make a living. You want more and better students in the US to go into Stem, medicine, etc. then you have to snip most if not all H1B and other hires and ruthlessly go after DIEversity crap which is the justification for managers to hire foreigners on work visas and greencards at a lower wage. Same issue with pursuing advanced degrees in STEM, Universities prefer coolie labor. Posted by: whig at January 01, 2026 03:10 PM (WDjG6) 260

China's best days are past them in the near future as they are aging as rapidly as the Japanese due to their lack of births.
Posted by: Archimedes ======== The major point in economics is that people respond to incentives and they avoid if disincentives exist. DEI destroyed the traditional white male bastions of STEM because of envy from other groups. Clinton, at the same time, began implementing the outsourcing racket in NAFTA inherited from GHWB, sold our technology including missile tech to the Chicoms for campaign funds, and implemented DEI destroying the pipeline of engineers, medicine, etc. from white males. GWB wasted 8 years pursuing democracy in the Middle East, importing skilled labor to depress hiring of local talent, and continued the DEI scam including supporting it at Scotus--thus the awful Grutter and Gratz decisions. Obama turbocharged DEI, endless waves of foreigners, vilifying white males, and purposefully causing corporations to pick up and send operations overseas. So GLOBO HOMO coalition of GOP and Dems ran things into the ground from the 90's until Trump's first term. Promptly resumed after that, and thus we have Trump II trying to fix 28 years of our leaders selling the US out. Posted by: whig at January 01, 2026 03:27 PM (WDjG6) 284

Posted by: tubal at January 01, 2026 03:26 PM (pDt9x) No. India was a collection of states, and really went from Iran to Burma. India today is about a third the size of Western Europe and was a series of kingdoms, princedoms, break away regions, and was held together by various alliances and "empires" On top of which it was one of the principal areas of research and learning after the Islamic states went into their fundamentalist phases, and had serious advances in medicine and mathematics. In the 15th C Europe and India were pretty well matched technologically. Posted by: Kindltot at January 01, 2026 03:34 PM (rbvCR) Posted by: Kindltot at January 01, 2026 03:34 PM (rbvCR) 293

There are a lot of reasons to dislike a candidate, I remember the fights over Trump. I miss some people who left over him too. Vivek is not running for President anymore.
Hating him for who his parents are is as dumb as hating some politician who was born in Kiev and was raised in Milwaukie because she was born in Kiev. Posted by: Kindltot at January 01, 2026 03:38 PM (rbvCR) 296
Yep. and the same reason Obamacare caused a lot of really good doctors to quit instead of becoming a cog employee in the new corporate setups envisioned and subsidized by the act.
Posted by: whig ---------- HCA Healthcare CEO Sam Hazen's total compensation for 2024 was approximately $23.8 million Meanwhile, at HCA-owned hospital: "Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC, has faced significant scrutiny and federal sanctions for patient safety issues, including multiple patient deaths between 2022-2023 linked to failures in emergency and oncology care, leading to "immediate jeopardy" designations from CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services). Investigations revealed systemic problems like understaffing, delays in critical care, and failures in patient monitoring, resulting in preventable harm and deaths, with reports detailing specific incidents such as a patient dying in an ER bathroom after a call for help went unanswered." Gore your ox, Whig?
Posted by: Kindltot ====== Snide and nasty you are for whatever reason. There is a reason you have been whining in the comment threads of being shut down. People are tired of your insinuations. You want to get nasty, I decline because you show yourself as what you are by your own words. You want to suck up to Vivek, go right ahead. But don't expect others to keep silent about the risks of charlatans whether Vivek or Mamdani. Posted by: whig at January 01, 2026 03:39 PM (WDjG6) 298

Posted by: whig at January 01, 2026 03:39 PM (WDjG6) I did gore your ox. Should we decide to stomp down voices on the national stage for purity reasons, Trump loses voices that support him. Then should Trump be impeached because he lost the house and senate, (due to infighting) then Trump is sidelined. Partially because he lacks support. Should this either silence or "redirect" JD Vance because he has lost support from his main area - the tech bros and the vocal backers who got shut down - then he is either a poor candidate or everyone thinks he is a wimp and stays home on election day Then you get President Hakeem Jefferies. Sorry I gored your Ox, Whig. Posted by: Kindltot at January 01, 2026 03:45 PM (rbvCR) 299
Pscientists say January is the saddest month. I think they actually pick 1/27 as the worst day of the year.

I used to live in Yachats OR,.
The Ducks and the Beavers are known for their yearly Civil War. The city a few miles north of Yachats, Waldport, puts out a weekly newspaper. Someone complained that beavers were coming up from the river and destroying the trees in their orchard and asked about the process for getting a depredation permit to shoot them. Some suggested that all they had to do was erect a goal post and the beavers would never get through it. We had flooding one winter. There was a coffee shop located on the Alsea Bay in Waldport that was owned by a lesbian couple. The newspaper reported on the business that were affected by the flooding and noted that the coffee shop sustained no damage, because it was surrounded by dykes.
