The surgeon they interviewed said he hates the crossbows, because when someone someone shows up with a crossbow wound, it's pretty much 100% certain they won't make it.

About a dozen years ago, a man in Virginia Beach was arrested for shooting his wife with a crossbow when she was walking on a treadmill. She died, he claimed it was an accident, but the jury did not believe him.

I know that technically Oregon is the underdog as they’re the lower seed… but in reality over the last 20 years (at least) Oregon has been a college football blue blood while Texas Tech has been a nobody (they didn’t even win big when Patrick Mahomes was their QB). So I’m pulling for Tech because I like underdogs

Uncle Mike was my maternal grandfather’s older brother. His birthday was Jan 1. Every year, he had an open house. Folks would come and go, the Rose Bowl would be on. People would nosh on one folks food and the adults would get totally lit up. Open bar set up on a towel on the washer/dryer off the kitchen. Several plastic gallons of booze. Ice in a bucket. A few mixers. Serve yourself.
Kids snuck drinks. Played croquet in the rain in the back yard. Tromped through the living room to the couch to gorge on chips and dip and Vienna sausages.
He made it to 104. Never had kids. I miss him.

It is not hard, it just takes persistence. I used a leather pouch and 550 cord. The pouch was just a square chunk of leather slit on the ends with holes in each "finger" so it would stack when I threaded it with the cord. There is no right way of doing it.
It was mostly to flip rocks. I used it a lot when I was rehabbing from a broken shoulder to make sure I was getting good rotation and rebuilding flexibility
Look up "shepherd sling" or "Balearic sling" for patterns.

Tech had a pretty easy schedule this season. Utah and BYU were the only ranked teams they faced. And Utah and BYU had easy schedules as well which led to being ranked.
Now facing good competition, Tech may be getting exposed.

In my opinion, NIL and transfer portal have ruined college sports. Especially NIL. College sports used to be about players choosing schools based on the school legacy or the good coach. And the focus was on playing for the school.
Now, after NIL and transfer portal, the focus is on which school can offer the most NIL money. And the players play for the money and that's it. School pride, coaches, fans do not matter anymore.

I will always be rooting for someone, because I love competition in every form, and college football is still great on the field. I try to ignore the fact that accountants are pulling the strings, they aren't the ones ripping off 50-yard runs through traffic.

One day, our very stupidest friend got in on the action (thank G-d I wasn't present for this, I might have killed him).

I still watch the regular season games between the good schools and watch the playoffs. However, I stopped watching bowl games in general years ago when they lost all meaning... because players sit out who were going to the NFL and the teams playing in the bowl games were 2nd and 3rd stringers, nothing like the teams from the regular season.
The bowl games also have lost all meaning because we've gone from 11 bowl games (16% of schools) in 1976 to 42 bowl games (62%) in 2024.
When everyone is special, no one is.

Iowa State ripped off the coach from Washington State. I read yesterday that many of the 40 didn't declare for the portal until after they met the new coach. Coach knows how to win, but he's made the road ahead difficult for himself.

That is also the case for professional sports for the past 2-3 decades now. Which is why I no longer root for any teams or players. Since players don't care about the team or the cities in which they play or the fans who watch them. Money is all that matters. In Arkansas, snow geese were easy enough to find and shoot, in fact, farmers and state begged people to shoot them in season, but geese are a royal pita to clean and cook so duck hunting is still the premier shooting sport there.

Had an acquaintance who worked at a large cattle ranch owned by his relative. Came a time that the deer herd got so large that they got a permit from the state to reduce the numbers. The acquaintance killed so many deer doing that he lost the taste for hunting them permanently afaik.

A friend of mine traded another kid for a crossbow when we were about 13 or 14. It didn't come with any crossbow bolts, but we did find some long (12" or so) bolt bolts (the normal threaded kind) in the junk.
They fit, and who gave a shit if they were slightly bent? Bolts is bolts, right?
Yeah, we really wanted to shoot this thing.
First shot, the bent bolt goes flying off in a completely random direction and goes right through the wall of his mobile home like it wasn't even there. Outer sheet metal, inner simulated wood paneling? Crossbow doesn't give a fuck.
We were suitably impressed by the power of the bow, but concerned about the inevitable, and memorable, ass kicking that was sure to arrive courtesy of my friend's father (this was before Modern Parenting forbade ass kickings, even if the kid does something monumentally stupid like shooting a hole in the trailer house).
Fortunately, the outer hole was in a patch of overgrowth at the corner where the homemade carport attached to the trailer, and the inner hole was in the back of my friend's bedroom closet.

I agree that he missed the mark there. However, I live in NoVa, a very "diverse" area. When my kids were in HS, most of the top performers were asians of some flavor. They took their studies seriously. Too many native-born kids don't.

On top of that, you have the caste system and Hinduism for the top Brahmin caste that means disdain and dislike for any of the other castes.
So you get a hodge podge of pockets of wealth along with pockets of extreme poverty. We shall see if India, unlike China, can beat the middle income trap for nations.

He made that comment last Christmas during the H1B discussion, defending the hiring of Indians. As has been pointed out since then, Americans that DO work hard, who DO pursue STEM degrees and want very much to achieve great things are being systematically shut out via foreigners getting preferential admissions at elite universities, getting preferential hiring at graduation thanks to OPT, and those who have gotten good jobs are laid off when an Indian executive is hired (see many postings from https://x.com/realmattforney and others), such as Fedx, Walmart, etc...
That's an argument for getting rid of the DEI rot and all the abuses of HiBs. As I've already said, I don't agree with Vivek on that point. However, it doesn't mean that our kids shouldn't work harder. That's a very different proposition.
We are long past calling this an 'Americans are slackers' issue.
Not all are, but plenty are, and if you want to avoid the need for bringing in boatloads of H1Bs, they're going to have to show they're better. We won't stay on top with mediocre S&T.

I got that wrong. They're lowering them from higher orbits, *because* the lower orbits will decay faster. That means that defunct satellites won't hang around for years causing future problems. The old orbit takes four years to decay, the new one only a few months.

My nephew is a computer engineering student at Ga Tech. I've seen pictures of the roughly 100 or more students in the program. AFAICT, he's the only white boy. He'll tell you that the Indian kids, some of whom were his roomies, are absolute maniacs for hard work. But I guess we should s*** all over them. It won't hurt our tech base at all. Right?

BTW, as a native-born scientist, I'm very familiar with the problem. There are scads of foreign-born scientists who work for peanuts and take postdoc after postdoc because they want to stay here. Like I said, it's not either/or, it's do both.

No. India was a collection of states, and really went from Iran to Burma. India today is about a third the size of Western Europe and was a series of kingdoms, princedoms, break away regions, and was held together by various alliances and "empires"
On top of which it was one of the principal areas of research and learning after the Islamic states went into their fundamentalist phases, and had serious advances in medicine and mathematics.
In the 15th C Europe and India were pretty well matched technologically.

The Ducks and the Beavers are known for their yearly Civil War.
The city a few miles north of Yachats, Waldport,
puts out a weekly newspaper.
Someone complained that beavers were coming up from the river and destroying the trees in their orchard and asked about the process for getting a depredation permit to shoot them.
Some suggested that all they had to do was erect a goal post and the beavers would never get through it.
We had flooding one winter. There was a coffee shop located on the Alsea Bay in Waldport that was owned by a lesbian couple. The newspaper reported on the business that were affected by the flooding and noted that the coffee shop sustained no damage, because it was surrounded by dykes.
