It's hard if you want to have Christmas decorations in SoCal that aren't wildly aspirational or incongruent with the environment. I tried to keep Christmas decorations realistic and sort of in-sync with the environment at my grandmother's house in SoCal in the past -- lights wrapped around the Giant Bird of Paradise trunks and up the palm trees, deer light sculptures grazing on the grass -- but my niece took charge this year and put some giant blowup snowmen among the succulents and cacti. Sometimes you just give in.

110 Blonde M., before it got discovered, the perfect trick for the harbor show was to go to NTC (Liberty Station). Nobody there. Parking everywhere. Just put up your beach chair in that enormous park. One of the fireworks barges is just a bit west off Shelter Island, so, great view (except when marine layer comes in).

Now? Calcutta. Word has spread. And, best part, the exit from that was instant. Nimitz over to the 8, bingo, off to the east. Was home in 15 minutes.

So a few years ago the SDPD, inexplicably, simply closed off the 8 entrance from Nimitz. Between the crowds that have discovered the NTC thing, and the 8 limit, haven't bothered to go in a few years.

It's amazing how many great little tricks and workarounds still exist in the now-overpopulated area, equally amazing how they get discovered, ruined, neutralized.

It was the southern end of the park / north end of San Diego Bay, on a slight rise. Had a decent view of the failure. If I recall correctly, the sound was delayed by several seconds due to the distance. Relatives overseas asked about it.

I got interested in continental drift and the supercontinent cycle, and just where everything was millions and hundreds of millions of years ago.

Antarctica has been at the pole for a long time, but only relatively recently covered in ice. At one time, it was temperate, even at the pole. And so I'm wondering just how life adapted to the polar day and night cycle there, which I'm reading up on.

I seem to recall my wife being given a card from the doctor's office when she had new lens implants. They did the eyes two or three months apart and now she no longer needs glasses after wearing them all her life. She eventually got the driver's license updated when we got the (apparently useless) Real IDs.
