The CIA Promoted Abstract Modern Art As a Psyop

Interesting video. The CIA promoted abstract expressionists like Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollack as some kind of bulwark against the propaganda value of Soviet art, which itself was realistic and representational. (Though idealized in showing proud, strong, happy Soviet peasants harvesting the abundant fields.)

So using taxpayer money, they pushed this crap. "Our" art would be simple geometric shapes and paint splatters.

It was literal Gay Ops.

But that's not the most egregious CIA Gay Op. They also funded and promoted leftwing magazines, including one founded by Bill Kristol's father, Irving Kristol. The point of this was to give leftwing intellectuals a leftwing ideology to believe in that wasn't actual communism.

But what they did was fund magazines that relentlessly attacked the right and pushed socialism.

Fifty years later, this op came to its ultimate fruition as a majority of the younger generations, for the first time in American history, now support socialism.

And many support communism.

Bang-up job, guys. Give yourselves all a promotion.

Just as an FYI: Irving Kristol eventually turned away from leftist more or less completely and founded the anti-communist "neoconservative" movement.

His son then turned all the way back to leftism.

I heard another version of this from an Argentine friend of mine.

There were tons of little socialist parties in Argentina, and they all had one thing in common: they hated the official Communist party there.

CIA comes in and obliterates all the little socialist parties, leaving the Communist party the only one standing.

I don't know the CIA's side of the story, whether this was some 11-dimensional chess move or plain incompetence.

Money laundering to avoid taxes. The truly rich investor class lives off their 'investments' not a paycheck for working. And to offset a gain, they often need a convenient 'loss' or 'deduction'. A classic way to buy some painting then donate it to an art museum at an inflated value from teh price actually paid. That donation then offsets taxes on cash gains when assets are sold for cash.

Money launderers like Art too as it is a convenient way to stash money and then cleanse it when sold even after paying the cap gain taxes.

Seriously.

They more accountants on their payroll than Treasury. Or the IRS. Or H&R Block. Combined.

Much of their monies are "off the books." Various CIA run businesses (they "own" an airline) and other ventures put huge amounts of cash into their coffers.

More than their allocated, approved budget. By a lot.

54 I don't believe this for a second.

Modern art was something that was being pushed throughout the 20th century. You could draw a line from the Classicists to the Expressionists to the Abstractionists, and it was taking place coincident to the huge advances in science, as well as the great disillusionment after WWI. There were just as many European modern artists that had a huge influence on art as American ones. Picasso? Miro? Matisse? de Kooning? and a whole lot more.

We didn't need the CIA to push this stuff. Picasso was disrupting the art world from before Pollock picked up a paint brush. Challenge.

Never adopt the oppressed oppressor lens when discussing international relations. It is and has been dog eat dog since nation states have existed. Those nations that cannot stand up to others with a military, then use corruption and soft measures to infiltrate and turn those nation's behaviors toward favor.

And a lot of my hostility to other nations is doing that crap to us whether was the UK, W. Germany, etc. They routinely leaked sensitive information, stole US technology, propped up the Soviet Union by loans and purchases, and screwed us economically. The Turd World was scarcely better, routinely violating our IP, taking our assets without compensation, and stealing whatever aid they got from the US for those in gubmint. And routinely killing, kidnapping, and terrorizing Americans abroad.

I saw this story put forward in a documentary --

Mussolini crushed and largely eradicated the Sicilian Mafia. Being a dictator, he could do that. After the war, ignorant American occupation officials were looking to form a local non-fascist government, and the remnants of the Mafia put themselves forward for the role. And the local people either were ignored or didn't speak up out of fear. A renaissance for the Italian Mafia followed.

If true, it can be added to the heap of US foreign policy failures.

(I recall that for years after WW2, the official US govt position, notably including Hoover at the FBI, is that the Mafia in the US was a myth, didn't exist.)

Similar to what is running Wall Street and our corporations. Because to thrive in those jobs, you need connections with powerful friends in society.

Back when they were getting started, you had someone like Allen Dulles be a humble grad of GW I think. But OSS head Wild Bill Donovan emulated the Brits with their intel and recruited primarily from the Ivies to fill it. In part, they had the contacts around the world plus the background in wealth, languages, etc. to pull off covert missions and planning. Plus they often overawed pols that sought to mind them.

I did this on trips with my husband & he was in meetings. I have to say I hate that Mandingo is mayor of NYC, and the illegals & crime have ruined the good days I was there. The Met Museum is fantastic & I never saw it all, but I tried.

Dam Dims ruin everything, then import illegals to make it worse.

Modern art bores me. I am not arty or intelligent enough to stare at blobs of paint and get something out of it. Other than thinking, Why? You have paint and a canvas, paint something!

I have framed landscape paintings. Which is hard to believe, me being a nincompoop full of bull. Yet I do. Granted they are in my home and our son's, but very good. I could do more but I am too dimwitted to be in one place long enough...and I have an entire room dedicated to art. It is a goal of this year, mate. For next year's Christmas gifts. There! A goal!

There was also no RICO act making a lot of what the mob did, a state rather than federal concern.

RICO is what broke the mob's power essentially over time.

My favorite parody of Modern Art was in the original Batman series, with Adam West. Cesar Romero's Joker entered an art contest, and he won with a canvas that had absolutely nothing on it. Agreed. Actually, this points to a problem that I see in how modern art is presented. I think the movement would mean a lot more to people if they knew what Modern Art was created as a response to. You never see that context in museums, and it's really hard to judge the piece properly without understanding what the intellectual underpinning of the work is. I find that a lot of modern art actually does make sense when placed in the context that you describe above.

Exactly. You can't fully understand Modern Art without fully comprehending how completely WWI disrupted the Old Order.

I don't understand Warhol's Campbell's soup portrait.

The slopping of crap onto canvas, big deal. I'd rather buy a painting by Koko the dead gorilla. I think it was Koko. It was not Harambe.

GWB now paints doggie paintings and I think he should have stuck to that as soon as he said Eeslam is the religion of peace. Man, that made me mad post 9/11. The last time I liked him, altho I realize I'd rather have him than Gore then.

I have changed a lot since 9/11/01 and 9/11/12 Beghanzi, which sent me loonie for weeks.

"I always watched the documentaries about counter drug operations, Panama, a lot of stuff in Colombia, so I decided to go check it out down there. I had a great time. So I kept going back. All the way past my time at the agency."

Talking to Kelly, Ryan explains his trips to South America as an addiction to adrenaline. But he also picked up a substance addiction while over there. Ryan: "So I was going down there. Doing a lot of stuff that I shouldn’t be doing. Cocaine."

So basically, we should live by the "do unto others before they undo you" principle?

Maybe that's the only way to survive this world, but it doesn't give you much room to complain when you see other folks doing it.
