Wednesday Morning Rant

mannixape2.jpg

Scorecard

With another year in the books, let's see how I did at prognostication at the beginning of the year. I've never claimed clairvoyance and as we'll see, there's a reason for that.

Happy New Year, Horde!

Prediction:

Economy is a mixed bag
I think we'll see a recession, possibly declared as having already begun but with good odds before the end of the year. It may not be severe, but I think we're nipping at the heels of one. The AI and real estate bubbles are helping keep things inflated, but there are a lot of headwinds in the monetary situation and out-of-control spending continuing to pile on. I think we're probably at the end (or close to it) on rate cuts and that is likely to reverse this year. Inflation is going to remain more or less untamed. Employment is probably going to suffer, too - and expect more and more "revisions" like we've been seeing that wipe out reported job gains. On the plus side, the coming regulatory reforms and - if it happens - DOGE are going to lay a lot of groundwork for recovery. China's continuing decline and the return of trade-as-policy-tool will likely pay dividends, too. There is a lot of reason for cautious optimism in the intermediate term, though I think 2025 is not going to be a banner year. If the bubbles in AI and real estate pop this year, it could be really rotten.

Gotta give myself a miss on this one. Employment - despite the headline numbers - is soft, but it isn't negative. Real estate is starting to soften more or less on schedule and the AI bubble has gotten even more dangerous, but nothing has broken badly and I can't claim any points.

Prediction:

The Russia/Ukraine situation is resolved, one way or another
American financing of the Ukrainians is unpopular and fewer people than ever care, except for not liking how much it's costing to maintain a stalemate. The great shoveling money into the furnace that Congress and Biden just undertook is likely its last hurrah. I expect Trump and his people to wade in and negotiate a settlement of some kind, in some manner. Russia will likely keep Crimea and the Russian-speaking areas it has already conquered and there will probably be some kind of DMZ or buffer zone. There may be some kind of reparations, disguised as something else, as a face-saving exercise (like seized Russian assets remaining seized forever). I don't think Zelensky will be deposed in the aftermath, nor do I think that Ukraine will be joining NATO or the EU. They won't be formally denied entry, but they won't be admitted.

Nope. Miss. Trump is making more noise recently about it and I think something will happen on this front soon, but it didn't happen in 2025.

Prediction:

The Middle East gets worse
The recent coup in Syria, the continued malingering in the Palestinian territories, an increasingly desperate Iran once the taps are turned off (which I think will happen under Trump, as it did before), an increasingly questionable Turkey and all the run-of-the-mill intrigues are going to conspire to keep the region hot for a while. I won't be surprised to see another war break out in the region, and I think peace breaking out is pretty unlikely.

This one is debatable. I am going to take the point, but you may disagree. There was an entire additional war in the region this year, the saber-rattling hasn't exactly toned down, various psychotic or suicidal countries decided to go ahead and recognize the Palestinian Territories, Israel/Qatar relations are degrading, there is civil unrest (again) in Iran, the Houthis remain a problem, etc. It isn't a pile of ash in the Middle East, but I think I can call this one a hit.

Prediction:

Energy improves
Despite the sticks in the eye Biden is driving into us on his way out the door, Trump is pro-energy and has sworn to keep naysayers - like RFK Jr - away from energy policy. I have some faith that this will happen and we'll be back to producing energy, starting this year. It takes a while and major industries don't turn on and off with the flip of a switch, but I have hope for a remaking of American energy through aggressive use of the EO pen, bullying Congress into doing their jobs, and whipping the administrative bureaus into line. Oil is going to be back, and I have some hope for nuclear at least getting started in the next few years.

Big hit. Oil is back and so is nuclear, much of it on the back of regulatory reform and major changes at Energy and Environmental Protection.

Prediction:

Unmaskable administrative infighting
The "Resistance" types are not going away, and are not going to be quitting on day 1. They're dug in like ticks and will do exactly what they did last time. I expect major, ugly, public fighting over the bureaus and control of them. I expect we're going to see attempted layoffs/mass firings, tons of court battles, stays, injunctions and overturnings from all corners. Congress is going to remain loudly silent over most of it, quietly blocking appointments as it is able. The bureaus are going to be fighting for their lives, and they know it. I expect some progress in Energy, Education, Interior, HHS, HUD and maybe some of the smaller outfits like USDA. I expect little to no progress in Justice, State, Treasury, EPA or any of those agencies comprising the IC.

I am going to give myself a point for this, but there is room for argument. The administrative agencies didn't exactly go as I expected (I expected nothing at EPA, and we got something). Justice has done what Justice always done, the courts have gone hog-wild, Congress has been largely unhelpful. We have had major gains in most of the places I expected, absent Education. I'm taking the point.

Prediction:

Continued progress in the culture war
We're going to chalk up some victories in 2025. I expect Hollywood to continue its general implosion as the cruft built up over the past seven years or so works its way through the studios. I expect DEI to be downplayed. DEI and its ilk will continue, of course, but much less publicly because it is losing support. I expect a few court battles over DEI-type policies to get started or finish during the year, and it will lose its de facto legal protections. More public universities are going to take a cue from Iowa and start winding down the more egregious programs. Woke is not going to die, but it's going to come out weaker in December than it is today.

Hit. The formal destruction of DEI has not been fully realized, but the entire scheme is on the back foot and while many universities and major corporations are making changes in name only, there is much progress being made. This has been a bright spot of the past year.

Prediction:

Major reductions and retrenchment in the press
The body blows the American press has been taking in the last quarter of 2024 will continue. They basically bet the business this year, and the bet failed. The Party loyalists who were keeping them afloat are disaffected, the opposition is exultant and the vast middle is increasingly indifferent if not outright contemptuous of the press. 2025 is going to be a bad year for establishment "journalism" and I expect significant layoffs and restructuring and would not be surprised by failure or near-failure resulting in consolidation. The press will not improve, it will just get smaller.

Hit. Major shakeups and divestitures at MSNBC, WaPo, CBS and more. The Press ain't dead (and it never will be), but they're having to regroup and consolidate and journalists have been getting axed.

So how did I do? 2/7 were clean misses and 3/7 were clean hits. 2/7 are arguable, but I think I got them.

So like 2025 itself, my crystal ball was a mixed bag!

I think 2025 was overall positive, but not stupendous. How do you think 2025 went? What do you all see for the coming year?

Now, imagine if there was a political party, call them, I don't know, The Republic People Party that would rally around his agenda and fight for it in congress...

Also, Rubio and Bessent hit it out of the park this year.

RFK did pretty well, but not as well as I hoped

Hegseth did ok.

And...Trump should be looking at replacing some of the other cabinet officials if he can get a better option through the Senate.

It's not quite the same thing, but I saw this from Tom Emmer this morning. Who is Tom Emmer? He's the GOP house whip, and there were several stories earlier this week about how he shut down Minnesotans complaining about the influx of Somalis, naturally labeling them raycisssss. Apparently, he's starting to hear footsteps and knives being sharpened. Good. Make an example of him. Let him know the zeitgeist has shifted.

18 What do you all see for the coming year?

More of the same.

- There will be more revelations of fraud and malfeasance related to the public fisc.
- There will be more revelations about official corruption, particularly around elections.
- There will be more obstruction by the judges.
- There will continue to be no action by Congress.

- The election will be important and will not go our way. Too many on the other side don't care about anything but getting theirs from whitey, or men, or Christians, of Jews, or whatever. Too many on our side will whine that voting for Trump in 2024 didn't magically, and instantly, fix everything.

Musk recently stated that the opposition to DOGE was about 80% to 90% from the Democrats (with Musk stating that it was probably closer to 80% than 90%), and the GOP elements were quite assertive in opposing DOGE's efforts.

So the amount of fraud in red states has to be significant. Not all of the red states, but Georgia and Arizona would be two to look at closely.

Do they still have vicious enemies wishing them harm? Of course they do, and will have til the end of this world. But consider that just over 2 years ago, they were surrounded by 6 armies all potentially wiling to attack. Now look how that played out:
Egypt - wisely decided to opt out. Not a friend, but engaged in no hostilities.
Jordan - same as Egypt.
Hamas - surrounded and badly degraded. Still dangerous, but their missile force is gone, as well as at least half of their operatives, and most of their leadership.
Lebanon/Hezbollah - leadership decapitated, much of the missile stores destroyed. Still dangerous, but like Hamas, contained.
Syria - a perennial enemy, and the biggest surprise. Government destroyed, old Syrian Army completely collapsed and gone. New Syria is still problematic, but does not have a fraction of the power old Syria had.
And Iran - the greatest enemy of all, and now humiliated, defeated in battle, and on the verge of internal collapse.
Israel is doing quite well.

145 If it turns out that the GOP loses the House, then Trump should concentrate his efforts on investigating and prosecuting as many Democrats (and Republicans) as possible.

Just stick it to them as often and as hard as possible. Of course, this is something Trump should do even if the GOP wins control of Congress, but if not, then make it the main focus of his last two years.

You aren't paying attention. The DOJ has been very good at protecting the 2A against the states. It is also protecting existing federal laws. Some of those laws are clearly unconstitutional, like the NFA and the 1000 yard school zone law, but the DOJ protects those existing Federal laws because federal courts require cases in controversy to hear anything. If her DOJ agreed not to enforce those federal laws, the next Communist DOJ could simply enforce them with VIGOR and we can never get a SCOTUS ruling to make them go away permanently.

And the "they're eating the cats and dogs"...worked.

Why?

Because people didn't ask for the population of Haiti to enter America under Biden. America has been asking for lower immigration levels for decades, and then Biden's administration blew the doors open in the opposite direction that not even Obama, post-2010, did. At a level that even Jeb Bush probably had reservations about.

Secure the border first, then start worrying about people going to real estate moguls from New York for their political leadership.

Polling shows a very tight, Republican favored environment right now (you know...the halfway decent polling, not the ones that say that Kamala is going to win PA by 5). The congressional map means that Democrats usually have to win the generic congressional ballot by 3-4 to have a shot at winning the House.

Average right now is D+3.9. And the polling will trend Republican over the next 11 months like it has every election year since 1990.

And even in a favored Democrat environment, they couldn't win the Senate. NC is 50/50, at best. Ask Logan how running for Senate in the wrong party against the partisan divide of the state works for "popular" governors. ME? Psh. Collins is going to win that one in a walk. TX? That's their third?

Plus, they have to hold onto Ossoff (white boy) in GA.

I worry about the current stranglehold the progressives have in the western and southeast regions of my state (Pennsylvania), and what will become of the middle-class (yeah, some hate the phrase) retirees but also our school children from K-12, up through college.

It's such a different world than all of the past 50 years, and I don't see "DEI" waning.

There are 539 licensed childcare centers in Washington state that list Somali as the primary language of operation.
The number of Somali-run daycares in Washington has drawn attention due to their high concentration and a recent fraud scandal involving Somali-run childcare centers in Minnesota.
Concerns have been raised online that many of these Washington facilities list only an email or P.O. box instead of a physical address in public databases, leading to calls for audits and investigations into potential subsidy fraud.
The Washington State Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF), which licenses these facilities, has stated that licensed providers must meet state standards and undergo regular inspections. The agency also provides resources in Somali, including FAQs and licensing overviews. (Much more follows.)

210 212 The “D+3 really is a tie” thing is out of date.

In 22 and 24 the GOP eeeked out a small House win while winning the congressional popular vote by 2.6% in 24 and 2.7% in 22.

If anything it’s the opposite now. Ds could probably lose the overall vote and still win the house.

I genuinely think you're a fucking retard.

Nothing of what you said counters anything I said. In fact, it feeds into what I said when I said that the number of winnable House seats for the other party is a couple of dozen.

How does 22 and 24 counter the idea that Democrats need a D+3 environment to win the House in anyway?

Seriously. It's time for you to fuck off. You're a troll.

I think the economy will do even better than 3.8%. Assuming Democrats don't shutdown the government again.

I also think the fraud issue is going to be a lot bigger issue than was even thought a few days ago. Stealing from American taxpayers is a fairly bi-partisan issue these days.

And Musk will be involved supporting Republican candidates who get with the America First program.

California gas is so expensive because it is a special blend demanded by Cal law. With the refinery that blew up this year going off line completely in Jan 2026 and another in the first Q of 2026, Cal doesn't have enough refining ability to produce its special gas, and will have to import it from India. That has a lot to do with Cal's high gas prices.

249 For those on social security and/or federal pensions, make sure you get a Payee Representative on your account(s) in the event you're unable to manage your financial affairs temporarily (i.e., hospitalized for a time) or permanently (i.e., assisted living). There are more and more instances of homes going into foreclosure & quick sale for those not able to independently manage their affairs.

------------------

This is important. The SSA doesn't recognize a general power of attorney document as automatically granting authority for someone to manage someone else's SS benefits. The Payee Representative doesn't automatically get that authority either, but will be the person contacted first and generally will be granted the authority.

Me, I expected we might be able to get a couple hundred k deported and maybe reduce border crossings to what they were during the previous Trump administration.

That alone is a titanic win. Monumental. Because it showed that the problem was NEVER the laws, and we could always turn off the tap whenever we want. Illegal immigration was a choice we made. Not we, THEM. republicans and democrats. They decided, contrary to simply stop enforcing the law or taking it seriously. Best of all, there is no way back.
