[Top photo: Antietam National Battlefield, Sharpsburg, MD] The Ball Drop. ----- A doctor and a lawyer were talking at a party. Their conversation was constantly interrupted by people describing their ailments and asking the doctor for free medical advice. After an hour of this, the exasperated doctor asked the lawyer, "What do you do to stop people from asking you for legal advice when you're out of the office?" "I give it to them," replied the lawyer, "and then I send them a bill." The doctor was shocked, but agreed to give it a try. The next day, still feeling slightly guilty, the doctor prepared the bills. When he went to place them in his mailbox, he found a bill from the lawyer. ![]() ![]() Ingredients

Fantastic reading at the link - brief description of Casanova's escape from the Lead Chambers, and a architectural rendering of the layout. High above the pozzi, tucked beneath the palace’s lead roof, lay the piombi—the Lead Chambers. These cells, while still prisons, offered a stark contrast to the wells below. Natural light filtered through small openings, and prisoners could at least breathe relatively fresh air. The irony was cruel: in summer, the lead roof turned these chambers into furnaces, while winter transformed them into freezers. Yet for those accused of lesser crimes—political dissidents, minor thieves, or those who had merely offended the wrong noble—the piombi represented salvation compared to the alternative.*** People have bizarre ideas. Rick Beato had a good old man yelling at clouds video today, he was going off on the 2026 Grammy nominees for the Best Song category.
To put it bluntly, the nominees were all terrible and will be forgotten and won't be remembered 40 years from now. He also went off on the fact that some of the songs had dozens of writers to create such forgettable garbage. He contrasted it with the 1983 Grammy Song of the year which was 1. All Night Long (Lionel Richie) 2. Beat It (Michael Jackson) 3. Billie Jean (Michael Jackson) 4. Maniac (Michael Sembello) 5. Every Breath You Take (The Police) Every Breath You Take won. Posted by: San Franpsycho at January 03, 2026 10:19 PM (RIvkX) I have to admit, I liked his first two albums. Springsteen has the honor, from my collection, of being the only artist who had an album I sold as is: His 'Born to Run'. I hated that song/album when it came out -- and it was played everywhere. More than happy to sell it to a college roommate. True Bruce hatred started on my part in '75 with that album. Never looked back. I had planned today to do a bunch of work around the house and on the computer, but instead spent it responding to the Trump-hating trolls on several boards. It was satisfying to respond to these worms by reminding them that Venezuelans were filled with joy while they weren't, and that bringing Venezuela anywhere near its pre-Chavez production levels (3.5 million barrels per day) which would be up from the 900,000 it currently produces, that this would put pressure on keeping prices down at the pump and that Americans would benefit greatly from this.
Oh, and whenever one of them would point out that Venezuela would resort to graft, I thoroughly enjoyed asking them if they would support Trump in his efforts to root out the fraud found in the Somali daycares. None of them took me up on the offer. Posted by: Sasquatch, the Original Trans-Wookie at January 03, 2026 10:44 PM (/mCq0) 120

Just another example of the MSM's complicity in evil--I've already read one headline that stated "Venezuelan President arrives in New York to face charges". Which implies DUH, he showed up on his own to defend himself.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at January 03, 2026 11:42 PM (w6EFb) ______________________________ Just to clarify what's going on. You might have noticed Russia is pretty verbal in their opposition of what happened in Venezuela. It's because just over a month ago they signed a security and energy deal with Venezuela that included 15 year leases on oil development. They did so to get around sanctions imposed by the EU and the US. Now, everything they put into place has gone to hell, and Trump is sitting with a nice big fat negotiating issue on the Russia/ Ukraine negotiation. Trump cut the EU out of that process totally, and they are desperate to somehow take credit for the upcoming peace deal, and Trump isn't letting them back in. They are pissed. Majorly pissed, and any negative item they can grab from the Venezuela scenario is being explored. Domino 1 has fallen. Posted by: Orson at January 03, 2026 11:55 PM (dIske) 304

Domino 1. A great band name.
Posted by: Diogenes at January 03, 2026 11:58 PM (2WIwB) _____________________________ It's all connected. Venezuela was shipping heavy crude to the Iranians for refining. The act was an attempt for both countries to, also, circumvent economic sanctions. You'll notice that Iran currently has MAJOR infrastructure issues (water, structures, electricity). They were barely able to address some of the issues in response to residents growing dissatisfaction. They were very much dependent on their oil refining of Venezuelan Crude to at least pretend to make improvements. Then Israel pretty much took out major power station et al. and made it much more difficult. Then the US shut down the shipping of Venezuela....and *BANG* the Iranian populace hit the red line. Iran is Domino #2. Posted by: Orson at January 04, 2026 12:04 AM (dIske) 325

Posted by: Orson at January 04, 2026 12:04 AM (dIske) No offense but I think that's backwards. When we hit Iran's underground nuclear facilities -- halfway around the world with no loss, it kind of made a statement. In that case, we weren't trying to capture anyone, just destroy nuclear facilities and kill scientists. And we did. With Maduro, we went in and grabbed both Maduro and his wife, clean as a whistle. That sends another message to the world. This one is we can still reach out and touch you anytime we want, alive or dead. The two are of a piece, that I agree, just the other way around. I just ran the June 9 date in Stellarium. I wouldn't call it a triple conjunction, more a "in the neighborhood" grouping. Plus they’re fully committed to the war they’re in, they don’t have the depth to fight another. With China, we’re talking about the invasion of Taiwan - what’s the biggest risk from their POV? The response of the US president. Now that they know that this President will launch an attack with no fear at all, what does that do to their planning for the invasion of Taiwan? Late night funnies--- sorry, I can't stay focused on the geopolitical stuff this late---
Navy bar rules: You remove your cover (hat) upon entering. You *don't* place your cover on the bar. You don't enter an EM, CPO, or Officers' Club without a proper "sponsor" of appropriate rank (an EM, CPO, or Officer what is willing to vouch for you). You *do not ever* step behind the bar without the bartender's permission. Penalty? Bartender notices your "non-compliance" and will ring the big brass ship's bell (always one behind the bar) & point at you... and then YOU WILL buy the bar a round. Other times: if you simply wish to buy a round, you get permission to step behind the bar and then ring the bell yourself... The Maduro capture, coupled with the air attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities, suggest an extraordinary level of skill, technology and daring. Precisely the opposite signal from that sent by the botched withdrawal from Afghanistan. Posted by: BurtTC at January 04, 2026 12:56 AM (Gz4YS) This is silly. No clever rhetoric from us has any impact on whether other nations decide to invade lesser nations they feel they can beat. The only influence we have on those decisions is whether they think we might intervene sufficiently to make the effort (and potential consequences) not worth their while. Posted by: BurtTC at January 04, 2026 12:56 AM (Gz4YS) Ridiculous take, Burt. Ever heard of Tibet? How about Ukraine? They are already taking over other countries and could not give one shit about precedent or permission. We aren't taking over Venezuela. We are liberating it. Not the same thing at all. We will not be enforcing out own government over them. We will let the country sort that out all on its own. We will restore the oil patches to the companies that developed them and that were stolen by Maduro. We will not allow all those drugs that fueled his economy to stream into the US. We are defending our country. If you can't get behind that, you better have a nice deep dark hole to hide in. Just my two cents. Posted by: tcn in AK at January 04, 2026 02:57 AM (6Bc88) 462
