The Morning Report — 12/23/25

TrumpBattleship.jpg

Good morning kids. It's Christmas eve EVE, and so with that in mind I'm going to try to keep the editorials through the end of the week a bit shorter if at all possible, breaking and/or critical news items deserving of further exploration notwithstanding.

And away we go. I don't claim t be an expert on defense issues, but this move on the part of President Trump just makes no sense to me.

President Donald J. Trump has revealed plans for the U.S. Navy to develop a new line of “Trump-class” battleships, starting with the construction of two vessels. The America First leader shared the news from his Mar-a-Lago resort, where he is vacationing over the holidays, joined by War Secretary Pete Hegseth and Navy Secretary John Phelan. Trump described the vessels as components of a new “Golden Fleet,” with ambitions to produce up to 25 such battleships. He stated that these would be the “largest we’ve ever built.”“They will have 100 times the force, the power, and there’s never been anything like these ships,” Trump said. “We envision that these two ships will be the first of a whole new class of battleships that will be produced in the years to come.”The lead vessel in the class will bear the name USS Defiant. This development follows shortly after the Navy abandoned efforts to develop a different, smaller warship due to escalating expenses and extended timelines.

Hey, I ain't no Alfred Thayer Mahan but in the immortal words of Isoroku Yamamoto via Toshiro Mifune "R-U-F-K-M?! don't bogart the wasabi, Nagumo!"

Will dressing up like Teddy Roosevelt and running up a White House stairway as if it were San Juan Hill (watch Arsenic & Old Lace), while deploying a great white, er Golden, fleet really deter Xi and the Chi-Coms? Will it help get out the vote 11 months from now? Maybe in Newport News or Pascagoula (assuming they still build ships there?).

Meanwhile in the all American town of Lawrence, Massachusetts:

Mayor Brian DePena appeared in court on Friday, where he required a translator to participate in proceedings at a Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Commission proceeding on Friday.

The hearing concerned former Lawrence Police Chief William Castro, a political ally of DePena, who was stripped of his policing credentials following an improper police chase. Castro was accused of driving the wrong way down a city street during the chase and filing a false police report, claiming he was responding to an armed bank robbery when he had actually been responding to someone attempting to cash a bad check . . . DePena testified on Castro’s behalf during the commission proceeding, but it was the mayor’s request to use a translator that drew significant attention. . . DePena is a native of the Dominican Republic and immigrated to New York in the early 1980s before settling in Lawrence in 1989. Over 80 percent of the city’s population is now Hispanic, according to the US Census.

The mayor of an American town cannot even speak English. Forget illegal immigration, this fool is a Legal Immigrant. both my parents' families (my father's side escaping the pogroms of Ukraine at the turn of he last century and my mother's side barely surviving the death camps of the Nazis,) came here to embrace and become fully American. Initially they barely spoke English but quickly learned enough to find work and support families while instilling the ideals and culture of this ountry on their children.

That an illiterate unassimilated foreigner was elected to public office by an equally alien electorate in our country is among if not its greatest failings in its history.

Wow, it looks as if the 2020 election was indeed stolen. I'm sure you're all shocked!!! I know I am.

And Mike Pence and George Conway can go pump each other.

And more "Walzing Muh shill dough" this time up in Maine. Funny how these desert dwellers all wind up living here in states that can get about as cold as the Arctic Circle.

But best not talk about it because that can be very unhealthy.

And speaking of health, Bernie Sanders is cancer, so all he's doing here is protecting his own. But you young people go out and pimp socialism as the last best hope for humanity:

Ebenezer Scrooge has nothing on Sen. Bernie Sanders, who is thwarting cancer treatment for kids in a possibly futile attempt to get Congress to pass his priorities.

Last week, the Vermont socialist was the sole vote opposed to fast-tracking legislation that will make it easier for kids with cancer to access treatments and clinical trials and incentivize companies to develop pediatric therapies.

His complaint: the Mikaela Naylon Give Kids a Chance Act, named for a teen cancer patient who died while advocating for its passage, is a pared-down version of a previous package that included other health-care measures as well, including funding for community health centers.

Without those add-ons, he’s withholding support of a bill that was teed up to pass easily — and that even he otherwise supported.
Yet without his vote, it didn’t win unanimous backing, so it’ll now have to make its way through a much more arduous procedural process when Congress reconvenes next year. . .Pray it doesn’t cost the lives of any kids who could’ve benefited. But make no mistake: This is super-villain behavior, as more rational lawmakers pointed out.

Right-wing Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), who also supports funding community health centers, fumed: “To say that you’re not going to give a chance for children to have a cure for cancer if you don’t get what you want” is “selfish” and “tragic.” Amen to that.

Up yours NY Post for describing Bill Cassidy as "Right Wing," which by doing that is essentially saying Nazi/fascist/racist etc, ad nauseum One day, if Bernie and Mamdani take over, you can do like they do in England when you have a toothache. Make like Moe howard did to Curly, and tie one end of a string to your rotten tooth and the other to a doorknob.

Dentists refuse to provide free dental care creating a major dentist shortage.

Just wait until we have "Free" healthcare here and free housing, education and food like every other "civilized nation" such as Cuba does as I have seen posted too many times by a bevy of scumbag leftists on Twitter and elsewhere. Yeah, life is such a paradise in Havana and Pyongyang but you insist on staying here in evil and illegitimate America.

Have a great day!

And lastly, a quick shout-out and a huge thank you for your continued support in hitting our tip jar. It truly is appreciated more than you can know.

6 I don't understand building a bunch of battleships. It is possible that aircraft carriers are obsolete in a world of highly-effective long-range munitions (missiles) on one side and increasingly effective short-range swarm weapons (drones) on the other, but if that's the case then how are battleships not?

Or are these actually battleships in the traditional sense? Or are they more like missile carriers or ultra-heavy cruisers? I have no idea. But it does strike me as odd to the point that I wonder if people are using words differently.

8 That an illiterate unassimilated foreigner was elected to public office by an equally alien electorate in our country is among if not its greatest failings in its history.

One of my mom's dearest friends moved to CA from Peru with her husband and children with little more than the clothes on their backs. They learned English through immersion and she was a nurse. She went off on one patient who asked for a translator and had been living in the country for 25 years.

Absolutely no excuse for this behavior.

Sure. It happened all the time. Language is hard, and English is particularly hard. It's amazing that *anyone* can speak it. Some There have always been immigrants who couldn't make the transition.

But they also didn't run for - or get elected to - office or have that condition act as a ticket to special treatment.

Hey, any of you guys got any bright ideas about how you would go about in 1994, convincing the Central Intelligence Agency to move its proprietary CIA airline used for covert operations, based in Miami, to f*cking up and move its entire operation to f*cking Columbus, Ohio, just to service your personal company instead of the CIA?

What do you think he cold called the CIA? You think he just schmoozed the CIA? Or is it because he was handling Khashoggi’s money during Iran-Contra that purchased the guns that Southern Air Transport a decade earlier was moving?

Adnan Khashoggi is the notorious Saudi Arabian billionaire arms dealer and international middleman. He was one of the world’s most prominent arms brokers in the 1970s and 1980s, facilitating massive deals.

39 > President Donald J. Trump has revealed plans for the U.S. Navy to develop a new line of “Trump-class” battleships, starting with the construction of two vessels.
-----------
Two thoughts on this:
1. It's ego. He'll never have a carrier named for him, or any other warship. It'll take a decade just to get the design formalized before any steel is cut. There will be no steel cut for a "Trump" class "battleship. Bet on it.

2. There is actually a case to be made for what the Navy has referred to as an "Arsenal Ship." A battleship-like vessel loaded with drones, missiles of every kind, advanced electronic counter measures, etc. It would be extremely useful in high threat environments like China/Taiwan, the Middle East and so on.

For reference on shipbuilding; the Navy's been hemming and hawing over a new Frigate, canceled it and then decided to use a Coast Guard design for it. For a decade.

62 Trump's romance with early 20th century weapons of war is quaint, amusing and complete bullshit.

But its Excessmass and the MIC needs some promises of fat bonuses and vectors for grift.

If the US isn't going to pissing away trillions around the globe in kinetic "nation-building" where the elites can easily plunder the US treasury and four generations beyond, then it has to be through this massive industrialization Renaissance where the vast majority of the population is too lazy, stupid, drug addled and entitled to actually push away from the liquor cabinet and game console, slip into work boots and pick up a welding torch.

Maybe Trump had his first egg nog. Who knows?

"identify it as a 'sight word' and you'll just know what it is!"

That's a short-cut. Some kids can learn that way. Many cannot. Almost everyone will get there eventually, and learning phonics doesn't preclude it - but can enable it.

There's a reason why a slightly tarted up 19th-century teaching methodology was able to make major cash in the 90s courtesy of desperate parents who's kids were failing to learn to read in school - and things were *much* better then.

69 One of my mom's dearest friends moved to CA from Peru with her husband and children with little more than the clothes on their backs. They learned English through immersion and she was a nurse. She went off on one patient who asked for a translator and had been living in the country for 25 years.

Absolutely no excuse for this behavior.

Posted by: NR Pax at December 23, 2025 07:18 AM

It is extremely common though. Last year a tornado went through the DFW metroplex and they had a witness on the TV for an interview. She had been in the US for over 30 years and still spoke zero english. We have dozens of illegals commit DUI's in our area every year and without fail the majority of them require a translator in court.

And much if it is based on false empiricism or misplaced causality, but then there is no room to make changes because the Word is the Law as soon as it is uttered.

Bright kids - defined in this case as "kids who are good at reading" - pick up "whole word" reading fairly early. So then the false causality creeps in through the conclusion that if bright kids read whole words rather than letter sounds, then teaching whole words rather than letter sounds will close the gap and improve achievement by using the winning method observed in nature.

That is, essentially, the premise behind whole word instruction methods. Except that it is a false premise. The brighter the kid, the faster he gets there on his own from the common basis of phonics (with the possible exception of spontaneous readers who require no instruction at all). You can't short-cut it. But no amount of failure will make a bureaucracy change course. The masters of the universe in charge must never be wrong about anything.

Ace did, IIRC. But it's been obvious for a long time. The people who come up with the curricula are pretty clear about it. "The brightest kids read whole words, so we'll teach whole words and short-cut boring and tedious instruction and improve results" or "the brightest kids do ten-centric mental arithmetic and come up with accurate results very quickly, so we'll ignore the arithmetic drills and explaining commutative properties and jump right to the end save a bunch of boring and tedious instruction and improve results."

They are very clear about being cargo-cultists, and then their rules become permanent because they're expert public servants who are by definition infallible.

107 Speak whatever language you want in your home or in a conversation to a fellow countryman, but live and think as an American if you came here and are a citizen.

Do you also see a connection in language and thinking?

It isn't just word substitutions and arranging subjects and verbs, and a bit more than idioms, but language has culture and thought patterns built in.

Like they say that the Greeks didn't "see" blue because they didn't have an English word equivalent. What is correct to say is that instead of focusing on hue categories they saw lightness, darkness, texture and emotional qualities.

So Homer would characterize the skies as "of bronze" not because of its hue category, but because it appeared dazzling, bright and polished like a shining shield.

Our language does effect how we think and vice versa.

Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at December 23, 2025 07:17 AM (avHHk)

Most modern warships are very lightly armored. This allows attacking them with smaller munitions. A more heavily armored ship would have - some - protection from that.

It's also the case that an artillery shore bombardment is both cheaper, and safer (from the standpoint of our personnel) than air assault into unreduced defenses.

Do they make sense? Possibly not, but I don't think the idea is as crazy as people think from the start.

Orwell understood that. For as great and illustrative as "1984" was, the most valuable part of the book was tacked on to the end. After the main story, there is an appendix called "The Principles of Newspeak."

The purpose of Newspeak was not only to provide a medium of expression for the world-view and mental habits proper to the devotees of Ingsoc, but to make all other modes of thought impossible. It was intended that when Newspeak had been adopted once and for all and Oldspeak forgotten, a heretical thought -- that is, a thought diverging from the principles of Ingsoc -- should be literally unthinkable, at least so far as thought is dependent on words. ... Quite apart from the suppression of definitely heretical words, reduction of vocabulary was regarded as an end in itself, and no word that could be dispensed with was allowed to survive. Newspeak was designed not to extend but to diminish the range of thought, and this purpose was indirectly assisted by cutting the choice of words down to a minimum.

141 The "Trump" warship is an other chance for the US Navy ship-building force to screw up.

That inner coterie of "experts" (the Engineering Duty Officers) could not even build a frigate with a proven Italian design.

FWIW, calling a warship a Battleship is a noob mistake.

Next, the US lacks the industrial ability to make and build a ship with the armor that was the defining characteristic of true Battleships and Heavy Cruisers of the WWI to WWII era.

A large ship filled with missiles, the Arsenal design, has been studied for decades. Manning that ship is a problem.

There is some utility with a large ship, which makes any drone hit less of an issue. But in an era of autonomous drones and keel-busting torpedoes, a number of smaller ships, like the O.H. Perry design of frigates, or the unbuilt Constitution class frigate, Japaneses AIP designed submarines, or versions of Israeli patrol boats would make more sense.

The inner US Navy culture is for larger ships. In a world filled with ocean, larger ships have more range.

Astounding numbers of better-managed, less reckless and less stupid Washington crime families have achieved it. It's downright normal, but it depends on not being reckless, stupid and wasteful. "Generational wealth" is a wide band. It can be anything from "the kids will have houses and the grandkids will be comfortably through school and adults before there's a meaningful risk of it running out" to "the next 12 generations can do all of the blow they want in however many mansions they choose to own."

What's Hunter's definition? Because he and his dad lived like the latter, but the former is much more attainable.

This is fictional, but has been modeled in some wargames; an Arsenal Ship that is just a modified cargo/container ship. Automated. No crew. Loaded up with 500-1000 or so cruise missiles, drones, etc. Blends in with other commercial traffic, gets close to its intended target, then... releases the weapons.

Variations, small iterations of this concept have been used periodically with mixed results. Mostly because integrating fire control systems, and all that goes with that is difficult to do with a ship not designed for weapons.

A railgun that hasn't been made to work after 15 years, 12 hypersonic CPS missiles that are in development. Only 28 VLS cells? That may get you through one attack by anti-ship missiles. We've evolved from the European large scale combat operation (LSCO) model, to a counterinsurgency Middle Eastern posture, and for the last few years have been moving BACK to LSCO, but now in the Pacific. That has meant substantial realignment to air and naval power, with the Navy in particular lagging behind for the last few decades.

199 >>I can see that, but there needs to be a revolution in the industrial C-suite world to carry it off. We have no Andrew Carnegie of steel to make it happen.

I don't know if you heard Trump's speech yesterday, Salty, but he spent a fair amount of time chastising the makers of our jets and ships to get their asses moving and stop doing things like stock buy backs and paying huge executive salaries and build factories. Shockingly, Trump claims to be the best weapons salesman on the planet and everywhere he goes he sells jets, helicopters and hopefully now ships.

Trump sees himself as the jobs president and he is on a mission to get American industry back online after decades of politicians selling us out. In October a deal was made with a South Korean ship building company to reopen a shipyard in Philly. Jobs.

>>David Kim, the Hanwha Defense USA executive who orchestrated the deal and now serves as CEO of Hanwha Philly Shipyard, said that the company plans to expand by “pushing the boundaries of shipbuilding” to fulfill orders for both commercial and government buyers.

200 Trump denies disaster aid requests for Colorado flooding, wildfires

While a president can tap additional federal assistance with a major disaster under the Stafford Act, the Trump administration has recently denied some states' requests for aid as it works to downsize the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The White House said Monday, "there is no politicization to the president's decisions on disaster relief." White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson explained Trump's decision, adding that the administration sent two firefighting planes to Colorado to help fight the fires.

"The president responds to each request for federal assistance under the Stafford Act with great care and consideration," Jackson said, "ensuring American tax dollars are used appropriately and efficiently by the states to supplement -- not substitute, their obligation to respond to and recover from disasters."

That is a heavy, if not impossible lift.

• workforce
• dispatchable energy and water
• transportation infrastructure (rail, highway, etc.)
• pro industry tax and regulation structure
• pro growth society (instead, we have NIMBY. BANANA, neo-luddites)

“Let me say something about Senator Graham. There will be news coming out in the next couple of months about how he has profited financially off of money that came out of Ukraine, laundered through Latvia and made it way into his bank account. And now we're talking significant amounts of money. Department of justice is looking at it.

227 Shipbuilding is almost a lost art here in the US. During WWII shipyards were churning out an escort class warship every month and transports ("liberty ships") every couple weeks. And there were a lot of yards doing this.

Today... not so much. And the design stage is a huge clusterfuck for not only warships, but any weapons system.

Sad to think that the likely catalyst to change that would be a serious threat to the nation's survival. And I'm not sure even that would have the desired effect.

There is your problem. No strategy, no philosophical understanding of the role of the surface fleet.

So now you have a ship. How do you incorporate that into whatever the Hell the country feels it needs a ship of that category to accomplish.

How do you train a recruit and train a crew and incorporate that into a grand strategery?

Its why I'm not impressed when China says they are going to build an air craft carrier, unless the US has given them generations of Naval warfare know-how and China can leap-frog all of the missteps and errors and jump to the last scene sequence of Ground Hog Day, having a hull that is supposed to do something is not a threat.

My grandparents spoke broken English, but learned English from their kids. The neighborhoods were Hungarian and Slovak, but only English was taught in the schools back then. No bilingual nonsense. They were forced to learn English to survive. No one catered to them.

If we’re going to hold back on the funding bill for them, I’d suggest some rewriting of current rules and regulations to minimize creation and support of huge non-profit organizations geographically distant from the communities they serve, and make them locally administered and controlled, at least at the county level, with a minimum but essential support and oversight from the Federal level.

305 The Trump Class could possibly work, if the ships were built with proven and relatively affordable technologies. But that's not what the MIC does. They will want to stuff them with the latest AI targeting systems, stealth hull plating, secure BLOS quantum encrypted communications, photon torpedoes ... it's the obsession with bleeding edge technology that makes our military both hyperexpensive and not very effective. That bleeding technology takes forever to develop, breaks down frequently, and costs a fortune to maintain. F-35s cost a fortune to fly and spend more time in maintenance than in the air.

Cheaper weapons systems based on proven technology would make the military stronger at less cost.

308 Shipbuilding is almost a lost art here in the US.

346 "How Trump Can Turn the Midterms Around"

It doesn't help AT ALL that the republican party is openly opposed to those that put them in office. They got rid of the Tea Party and are simply waiting Trump out.

Many will get paid to 'retire' just like 30+ did in 2018 at a time when incumbents won 93% of the time.

I am optimistic and will do anything I can to help because establishment republicans are feckless. Look what they helped foment over Tuca and TPUSA.

Depends on your state tax situation and your perception of the discount rate they use to figure out the present (cash) value. Some states do not tax lottery winnings, and other states do. Some people think they can earn more than the discount rate. I would take the annuity myself.

https://www.goldenfleet.navy.mil/

Posted by: McLurkerson at December 23, 2025 09:17 AM (AZDyS)

358 Ok to be serious - the ship building is because the Arleigh Burke Destoyer class, an incredibly successful design, has reached the end of its useful life. The platform is just too small to carry much of the new developments foreseen. Also the Zumwalt class, which was supposed to be the ship of the future, turned out to be a failure and has been canceled. So all our warships are aging out, with no planned replacement.

What Trump is talking about is really a super Destroyer, or what used to be called a cruiser with the ability to mount a lot of new tech and maybe even a VTOL F-35 or two, as well as helicopters.
It will be nothing like the old battleships, but they are ships, and they might do battle, and Trump likes the word a lot, so what the heck let’s call them battleships.

Trump likes attention. He loves America. China has been building up their military by leaps and bounds over the US. Is their construction capabilities better than ours? Likely not. But Trump is reminding the world we can still build shit bigger and better than anyone else. This is just another cog in his 'peace through strength' mantra.

I'm fine with it.

But yeah it'll be f'in cool to see. I wonder where they'll make it. The render kind of looked like a Zumwalt on steroids so I wonder if it will be built here in Maine. Bath Iron Works probably isn't big enough to build it.
