The first trailer for Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, due in theaters next July.

Matt Damon looks too stupid to be Shrewd Odysseus, and Nolan is doing the Industry Standard race-swapping, but... I do like most Nolan movies, and hope this is good.

How about some superhero slop? Some people are knocking the Supergirl trailer because the character is apparently a nihilist party-girl. I don't think that's necessarily a bad move because, 1, who cares about Supergirl, and 2, you need to differentiate your heroes from each other. If Superman is a golly-gee optimistic boy scout, it isn't a bad call to make a being with his exact same powers and nearly his exact same costume the opposite of Superman.

Ethan Van Sciver also justifies the take, reasoning that, unlike Superman, Supergirl actually lived through the destruction of Krypton and thus is scarred by the episode. Superman, on the other hand, was sent to earth as a baby and didn't know of the destruction of Krytpon until he was told about it as an adult. (I should note that Supergirl was born before Superman, but, due to time dilation shenanigans over the long trip to earth, arrived later than he did and is now younger than he is.)

Here's my take: I don't care if it's a good take or a bad take. I'm so over this.

But now here's some more Slop Superhero Content: Wonder Man. They did a race swap on Wonder Man which I don't care about because, get this, literally no one cares about Wonder Man. The character was invented for purely cynical reasons -- it was practice back then to steal another company's IP by just flipping the gender of a character. Thus, Marvel created Wonder Man just because DC was making some money with Wonder Woman. (And Stan Lee created She-Hulk because he knew that someone, likely DC, would create a female Hulk if he didn't do so first.)

If you never heard of Wonder Man, don't sweat it. He's a D-list team member on whichever Avengers team needed a spare body in the 80s. He was one of those characters I would actively avoid by not buying a comic if he was on the cover or if I knew he was on the team. Like Captain Mar-Vell or Quasar or a dozen other generic Superman-derivatives.

Wonder Man also seems to be yet another attempt to make a superhero show for bored women. It seems to be a workplace comedy set in Hollywood where all the jokes deliberately undermine the conceit of superheroes. This is all silly stuff, ha ha, do you get it?

I mean, yes, I get it, and that's a fine thing for nerds to joke about amongst themselves, but it's a bad idea to make mockery of the concept of the superhero a central theme of actual superhero medium. The suspension of disbelief is like a soap bubble. It takes very little to burst it.

I've said this before: I've hated this trope since they did it to death during Roger Moore's run as James Bond. It's hard to enjoy the fantasy of the superhero spy when the makers of the movies keep screaming at you "This is all stupid and you're stupid for liking this."

I think they put this crap into movies to appeal to Filthy Casuals, who went into the theater agreeing it was all stupid nonsense, and enjoy seeing the movie itself confirm that it's all stupid nonsense. These Filthy Casuals might even be in the theater under protest, dragged to the show by their boyfriends or husbands. The problem is, that only barely appeases the Filthy Casuals, whose business you don't need and wouldn't get if not for the social obligation to go out with one's male partner, and it actively alienates the actual fans who business you actually do need.

Anyway, I also do not care about this. I care less about Wonder Man than I do about Supergirl. At least Supergirl is an older character which, to my conservative mind, makes her more of a cultural artifact worthy of some limited respect.

I finally saw Weapons over the Thanksgiving weekend. It's pretty good. The first half is a grounded and realistic movie about what would really happen if a bizarre tragedy -- an entire class of 11 year old students, save one, running out into the night for no reason to disappear completely -- struck a town. Angry and desolate parents lash out looking for answers and scapegoats.

And this isn't even done in a heavy Message type way, about Us being the Real Villains After All -- it's just what would really happen. You can hardly blame the bereft parents.

I was kind of dreading the second half because I knew there would be a monster and the monster part would ruin the weird-but-realistic tension and mystery of the first half. But it's pretty good. Instead of giving you a plausible explanation, which they probably realized was impossible, they go in the other direction and hit you right in the WTF? button, and it's a pretty square hit.

If you're not a horror fan, I would skip it. The first half is a tense and well-done weird drama without any gore -- just dread -- but the second half does get bloody and disturbing.

Seen anything worth recommending?

8 I think the general take on Supergirl is she's a softer version of Superman. I'm thinking mostly of the Injustice take where Superman is willing to do ANYTHING to implement law and order but Supergirl wants to get him to tone it down and be more merciful.

Of course the whole Injustice thing failed, honestly, because it is a superhero thing and didn't go deeper. Make Superman less over the top and the whole thing plays better on the classic topic of the limitations of power to actually make things better.

14 Ralph Fiennes did a pretty good take on Odysseus in The Return - I suspect he would have been good in this.

He is a MUCH better actor then Damon.

I suspect this movie will play out like Tom Cruise's Valkyrie where the movie was good but its obvious weakness was the lead actor.

Seussical the Musical. Kids just finished their winter show, in the round, and I have to say it is my favorite. It's not Phantom or Le Miserable, but it was fun, the kids put in a lot of work, and they put in some amazing performances.

You're obviously not going to see our version. But if it is in your area, it is worth a look.

I agree and it reminds me a bit of Sunshine where the first half of the movie is an interesting SF movie of people trying to deal with a solar system level catastrophe and the second half is a bad monster movie.

Weapons's second half is better then that but not as good as its own first half.

Finally ended up watching season 1 of Brokenwood Mysteries. Fairly dark and grim at times but realistic portrayals of ordinary people.

Different vibe than the boring repeated locked room mysteries that became overload on the Paradise series and spinoffs. Jonathan Creek, although with a very clever premise, eventually overloaded on that as well. Being clever rather than good acting.

Since Benedict Cumberbunch probably has little interest in extending the Sherlock! series, if such has to be rebooted, Alan Davies might make a good Sherlock.

Theaters will become a high-end but niche thing. Alamo Drafthouse is probably a good model going forward.

I can't stress how much I didn't mind paying $18.50 per ticket for a movie (Wake Up Dead Man) that I kind of hated. the experience was still good.

Except it was just a random rather small Bronze Age provincial town. Not the center of a vast civilization. Hundreds of other archaeological sites are bigger, more impressive and had better artifacts.

To this day, it's not even clear which civilization or culture "Troy" was part of. Kind of an outlier village.

Except it was just a random rather small Bronze Age provincial town. Not the center of a vast civilization. Hundreds of other archaeological sites are bigger, more impressive and had better artifacts.

To this day, it's not even clear which civilization or culture "Troy" was part of. Kind of an outlier village.

There are three versions of the Trojan Horse in the area. Two are pretty basic an crappy. The best one by far is in the nearby town/port. It's...the one from the movie, which the makers donated.

They don't present the Greeks as pure awesome heros that go destroy the enemy with honor because of their inherent awesomeness but quite a range of personalities and leave open the question of whether the war was worth fighting at all.

The Iliad is a much more compact work, with the whole thing being set in the environs of Troy, and in a much shorter timeframe.

144 Good basic breakdown of "Weapons". It's one of the better horror movies this year. "Good Boy" and "Presence" are lower key which is both good and bad for horror.

"The Tale of Silyan" is a barely disguised docudrama about a white stork and the Macedonian farmer that loves him. Solid low-key recommendation.

I've not seen any good "bombastic" movies in a while. Lotsa luck with documentaries: Blum (about the guy who ran Yugoslavia's biggest industry); Rebel with a Clause (a woman goes around setting up a "grammar helpdesk" on city streets across the country); Stiller & Meara: Nothing is Lost (Ben Stiller's documentary about his parents, surprisingly sensitive); Donn of Tiki (blast of a movie about the guy who invented the Tiki aesthetic/ethos).

A little hard up for interesting narrative films but HUNDREDS OF BEAVERS is back in theaters for limited runs!

153 Most interesting film I saw in 2025 was Amanita Pestilens, a bizarre 1963 Canadian film, and only the second Canadian film ever made in color. It was thought to be a lost film until just a couple months ago when a pristine high-res version cropped up online without explanation.

The colors and set design are really eye-caching, but the plot is trivial to the point of absurdity: A guy who's proud of his suburban lawn goes nuts when invasive mushrooms start sprouting up all over it.

But the reason to watch it is that this film was the debut performance by a 19-year-old Geneviève Bujold, and she is SCORCHING during her brief times on screen. You never saw anybody so cute/sexy in your life. And it was a very early example of the "manic pixie dreamgirl" trope

Another bizarre aspect mof the film is that every scene was filmed twice -- first with dialogue in French, and then with the same actors reading their lines in English. Two versions o the film were released, but so far only the French version has been re-discovered. (Thank god for auto-translated subtitltes.)

Anyway: semi-recommended.

I think Nolan is my favorite director. I liked Following and most everything he's done. Speaking of race-swapping though, my dark horse favorite of his is Tenet. Then watching it, thought it was awesome and John David Washington is a real good actor (thanks to his dad probly; and still think it's Robert Pattison's best work). Anyway, Matt Damon's annoying. Oppenheimer was ok but as much as Nolan's Odyssey sounds awesome, Damon as Odysseus for 2.5-3 hours feels intolerable...

"Honey Don't" is pretty good. It borders on trying to be noir. Sort of. It's a decent Whodoneit.

Well, "Weapons" is meant to be scary and wild and the second half, as noted, is trying for a big payoff (and hence splits the audience).

"Bring Her Back" is more in the mournful subgenre (see all the horror movies about orphanages and dead children, e.g.) so it doesn't have that severe a tone shift. It's definitely a more even film.

But of all the things that come down to taste and mood, horror and comedies do so more and harder than any other genres.

264 Well, "Weapons" is meant to be scary and wild and the second half, as noted, is trying for a big payoff (and hence splits the audience).

"Bring Her Back" is more in the mournful subgenre (see all the horror movies about orphanages and dead children, e.g.) so it doesn't have that severe a tone shift. It's definitely a more even film.

But of all the things that come down to taste and mood, horror and comedies do so more and harder than any other genres.

I'm with you on that one, Anna Puma. It was fine (I guess) to remove the Gods as actual players, but to remove religion completely was to be just the dorky kid smashing action figures together.

I'm glad people enjoy Nolan, but I haven't really liked one of his movies since "Insomnia", so I was out almost from the get-go anyway. (I recognize his ability but, like Scorsese or Mann, I just can't get into his films.)

How squeamish are you? We're talking Cronenberg-plus levels of body-horror, that goes from horror into comedy. The last 20 minute sequence is the most deliriously excessive body horror I've seen in decades—maybe ever.

So if you can keep your lunch down, and this sort of thing is your bag, you get a lot of naked Moore and Qualley. (And Moore@60! looks amazing.)

Nah. I mean, you're not wrong if you're talking a traditional film, but this is a balls-to-the-wall horror satire. Going halfway would not have worked. Yes, it's alienating to a lot of the audience but it wasn't the time for moderation.

The director is a Parisian girl (Coralie Fargeat) who did a revenge picture called "Revenge" where the lead girl prances around half-naked (and her lover is dong out half the time)--I mean, it's the sort of exploitation that nobody does any more and I thinks he gets away with it because, well, woman. It's empowering or something.

430 There's a YouTube video of a young French woman evaluating the fluency of Hollywood stars who speak French. She was delightfully surprised that Jodie Foster is "almost perfect" linguistically.

Foster recently made a French picture, A Private Life. She plays an American psychiatrist in Paris. One of her patients commits suicide, and the patient's husband blames the shrink. But then,
Foster finds stuff to suggest that maybe it wasn't suicide. Maybe, it was MURDER!!

That's about the only new movie I want to watch.

431 I actually care, a little bit, about Wonder Man. I have always found the 'failure' nature of his character interesting.

I heard about the TV show, which I had heard was starring Eddie Murphy. Guess that fell through.

But, Wonder Man is supposed to be about a superhero (with actual powers) who wants to be an actor. That does not seem to be the story they are using. This looks like a The Franchise all over again.

432 Movies I've seen and recommend; Hamnet, though at times I wished I had a button to turn on closed captions. Cast were pretty unknown.

Movies I saw and didn't hate; Naked Gun and Mission Impossible. MI was a slight disappointment.
Interesting thing about Naked Gun was that I found it amusing, but the twenty-somethings seated above went nuts for it. I think it's because the movie resurrected so many old sight gags and prat falls that I was so familiar with, but it was all new to them.

I saw Superman... I have regrets.
