Gun Thread: Pre-Christmas Edition!

santa pic 2025 scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be the Pre-Christmas edition?! That must mean Christmas is drawing near. Four days, in fact. Is all of your shopping done? If I don't have a chance to say it later, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas!

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

8 Cigarpage had a nice sale a few days ago, where they were selling singles and you got a 10% discount if you bought a minimum of 10 sticks.

I made my own lancero sampler out of it.

It hasn't shipped yet, despite the label having been printed a week ago.

11 No gun stuff for Christmas, I'm guessing. I didn't buy any for my son. But there will be knife sharpeners and lots of flashlights -EDC, for in the car, and at home. For him and his missus.

And he's cooking this year. I can't wait.

12 I remember the Christmas Eves of my callow youth, when I would hang, with great anticipation, a pair of pantyhose on the mantle.

Sadly, not once did I ever awake Christmas Morning with a comely and nubile lass in them. In fact, I never awoke to anyone at all in them. Sad!

Just finished a Dumbarton 2025 Holiday limited release. Not bad but not somehow up to the standard of previous Holiday editions, for me. Last year's edition, Holiday 2024, is now a regular production item. Very good. Amazing holiday aroma/flavor profile. These sticks use some pipe tobacco filler to achieve their distinctive profiles.

48 Diogenes, GWB, do a gun trust. Best thing is that the guns do not have to go through probate, nor get listed as a public asset of the estate.
Any NFA items in the trust still need to be transferred through BATFE ( the trust beneficiaries must qualify), however, with the upcoming zero tax changes, it may get easier.

54 Duty day the range this week. Nothing unusual or interesting. As has become a pattern, some nice people show up at absolutely the last second, and I end up keeping the range open past normal closing time. This time one party was a father and son, and son's friend, there for son's 24th b-day.

Dad brought an S&W 500 revolver. Was interesting to hear it - definitely a boom, not a crack, and not all that loud really.

And I tried out 4 brands/types of 22LR in the M&P 22 pistol, which simply wasn't working last time I shot it. Looks like it was indeed the ammo. 3 out of 4 types this time functioned just fine, now 2 kinds are marked "Single Six only".

My son and grand sons get most of them. Especially the ones that have been in the family for awhile. Others are earmarked for friends, all of who are much younger than I. Those that don't hold any emotional meaning I'm slowly getting rid of.

The bigger issue is all my reloading equipment and supplies. My freinds who reload and I have made a pact that when one of us passes, the others will clean out the reloading room to save the surviving spouse the headache.

66 I keep a fairly up to date inventory of my gubs, with approximate current market value. Probably need to formalize some arrangements. The boss will keep a few (S&W Model 60, M1 carbine repro), which she shoots well and enjoys. Want to arrange with the guys on my RSO crew to take what they want (including from ammo stocks and reloading stuff) as a first cut, but most of them are older than I am ..... in any case they'll be able to advise as well as buy anything they way.

Apart from that have advised the boss to go to one local gun store I like and do a sale of the whole lot. Ammo and reloading stuff a bit trickier, especially since the demise of CalGuns.net, which was a fantastic online forum for local private sales.

82 Range report for the Single-Six with the 9.5 inch barrel I mentioned in a previous thread. Nothing fancy, just 25 yards off hand. The 22 magnums were spread out, maybe four inch groups, if you consider that a 'group'. But the 22lr made up for that: inch and a half groups centered on the bullseye. I was pleased and surprised. The Single-Six convertible usually does better with magnums than with the 22lr. At least that is the standard write-up. Next time I'll try a different brand of the magnums and hope to continue the good results with the regular 22s.

This was another example of Weasel's admonitions to remember fundamentals. They help every time. One advantage of a single action revolver: there isn't any temptation to try shooting quickly.

I have to wonder though; what kind of inbred trailer trash keeps the factory plastic case the pistol came in, but manages to lose 2/3 of the interior foam padding, the instruction booklet, and the spare magazine?

126 I hope to have enough warning that I can hand a bunch of them out as gifts before I pass, and to convert the rest to cash via consignment sales.

I don't know if you are a hoarder or what your inventory looks like, but it would seem that if you took an honest survey of your collection and identified what specimens you no longer planned to shoot, that you can pass them along to someone so that they can enjoy them now.

I'm at that point now, but don't have anyone in mind who I would trust to have them and either use or sell responsibly.

May just have to look at consignment sales.

130 Christmas traditions?

We used to make fudge and buy donut holes and have mulled cider on Christmas Eve while we decorated the tree.

And on Christmas, one of our stocking stuffers was a box of whatever cereal we wanted, each of us with our own.

That was the only time we got the sugar bomb cereals, though I do remember asking for - and getting - Raisin Nut Bran for at least one Christmas.

157 154 Gear bags. You can buy bags with pouches for magazines and stuff with a cool name, or you can go to Harbor Freight and look around their tool bags. I have one with all kinds of storage, inside and out that I only paid under $20 for. Ballistic nylon, double stitched, gets the job done.

158 Although this is a different year, we will keep some traditions...Christmas Eve with just us two and our favorite bottle, opening gifts between the two of us...with Stollen, of course...the rest of the celebrations and gifts will wait til TRex brings his Mama over, so we can all enjoy the food and remaining gifts. And German Christmas carols, of course...and cookies.

Of course, with so much space, I have way too much stuff in there. Do I really need a handheld GPS?

164 Quick question for the Gub Group -

What is your opinion of non-lethal armaments (Taser, beanbag, rubber bullets, etc.). Byrna makes personal protection devices and markets them to people who feel conflicted carrying real firearms yet know that mace doesn't quite cut it either.

Looking at a potential business opportunity involving that space, so the unvarnished truth is kindly requested here.

187 Took my B&T KH9 to the range friday. Proved not to be as reliable as I'd hoped. The linear hammer would occasionaly not be caught by the sear. And it did not like flat nosed subsonic ammo at all. Then shot the 10/22, which is always enjoyable.

Hoping to get James Earl Jones's high power this week. Really looking forward to it.

204 My family doesn’t have much in the way of Christmas traditions, but I’ll be wrapping presents on Christmas Eve after flying up to the parents house on Tuesday. Christmas dinner used to be prime rib but that got too expensive, so now it’s ham and Polish sausage.

I also bought myself a Christmas present today, Shadow MR 920. For some reason I thought it had an optics cut on it but when I got home, turns out it doesn’t. Seems to have a very short reset on the trigger. Came in at just under $500 so I didn’t think that was too bad.

You put a hurricane impact resistant door to make it harder to bust into. Maybe pull the interior GWB and infill the hollow stud walls with heavy wire mesh and pearlite concrete, the put you slat walls.

Don't forget circuit for lighting and dehumidifier.
