Evening to you late toilers, and early early morning to you insomaniacals! I'm up way earlier than I planned. Not Stirling's fault, not Dagny's, just . . . awake. The very first episode of The Invaders is on MeTV. Apparently their overnight SF Saturday night lineup is all the Irwin Allen shows, Lost in Space, Time Tunnel, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Land of the Giants, and then this Quinn Martin semi-classic. There was only one season of TT and two, I think, of Invaders, so they repeat pretty often.

I use Grok to generate short snippets of Javascript code to do routine tasks that have lots of online examples, for example to send an SMS text message using the Twilio API, or to create a flyout menu using React and Material UI.
For short tasks like that (under 200 lines or so) it usually does a pretty good job. I still check every line of code, and I have to understand it 100% before I use it. For longer tasks it starts to break down and hallucinate nonexistent APIs and NPM packages. Posted by: WillowViney at December 21, 2025 05:25 AM (VPL4v) 30

These 2011 Macbook Pros are really nice laptops. They are stylish and easy to use. They work well with Linux installed. I haven't tried the patch that lets you upgrade to newer versions of the OS. Probably should. The supply of cheap old reusable laptops won't last torever so you might want to pick up something to play around with.

People will ask, for example; 'what's NeuraLink got to do with Optimus?'.
Well, robots will be able to do a lot of things but occasionally you'll need to be able to remote;y control a robot body to do things that humans would find uncomfortable or impossible to do. That's where Neuralink comes in to be able to see and control what the robot is doing without using VR or something. That would be especially useful in say, space, or on a frigid planet. Then you'd need something like Starlink for the connection, and AI to handle some of the tasks. Posted by: SpeakingOf at December 21, 2025 08:05 AM (6ydKt) 151

Terrorizing journalists with sanctions in order to suppress the truth is nothing new for the EU.
On May 20, 2025, the EU sanctioned two German journalists for the first time—Alina Lipp and Thomas Röper. At the time, we reported in detail on this case, “EU sanctions German journalists,” and also analyzed the case from a legal perspective. The result was clear: punishment without crime or trial, disenfranchisement and expropriation without a hearing. The EU is dangerously close to the Nazi regime of 1936, when Thomas Mann was expatriated. Following the same pattern, action is now being taken against a Swiss citizen for the first time. Gun owners' number one fighter in Washington, D.C., Representative Andrew Clyde, along with five senators and 35 other House members, have sent a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi.
In this letter, they've made it clear that the DOJ is out of line with Congress' intent. ... But thanks to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed by President Trump in July, that $200 tax payment was removed from those aforementioned items. Unfortunately, the registration requirements of the National Firearms Act remain. That's why we at Gun Owners of America are suing ATF and the Department of Justice to remove the registration requirements on these items. The National Firearms Act and its registry, the NFRTR or National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record, have been declared a legitimate use of Congress' article 1 power of taxation. He was State Dept. and got to see the beast from the inside but he's also got an incredible talent for digging up documents and making connections. The conclusions he reaches are always backed with evidence and once he lays it out it all makes sense. For those not familiar I think this would be a good time to read up on the history of the CIA and how it resisted time and again any sort of reform by just going underground. And it's not just the CIA but intel organizations around the world and how they worked together. One great example is the Safari Club. https://tinyurl.com/yva822fx Posted by: JackStraw at December 21, 2025 08:40 AM (viF8m) 213

Wisdom is of spiritual origin. I would really hate to have demon possessed robots. Unless you change the definition of Wisdom. Because the current one deals with a divine guidance of creation and moral living; the ability to discern truth, goodness and the ultimate purpose of life. From an ancient faith perspective, it is part of Theosis where the will is shaped to see things from God's perspective. Elon and his AI team are not God. 176 Mike Benz is an incredible researcher. Over the last few days he's been unraveling the Epstein situation and even showing how it led to hundreds of thousands of Somalis coming to the US. It's a long and twisted tail but the net of it is Epstein was absolutely working with the CIA and others laundering money and running guns and helping the CIA fund some of their secret wars.
The pedo stuff is awful but probably not the reason the government was protecting him. It's wild how many conspiracy theories are turning out to be true. The creation of the Safari Club coincided with the consolidation of the Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI). The BCCI served to launder money, particularly for Saudi Arabia and the United States—whose CIA director in 1976, George H. W. Bush, had a personal account.

The West had a serious blind spot about communism in the zeal to defeat the nazis and imperial japan. The circle around FDR was a “who’s who” of Soviet agents. Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at December 21, 2025 08:44 AM (a6PrB) - True. Replace with the term programmed knowledge. "Wisdom" is the application of knowledge with good judgement. I believe at some point in the not too distant future, robots will be able to mimic judgement. They won't have free will to do so. Their programming (and programmers) will determine the goodness or the evil of their judgement. Posted by: Biden's Dog sniffs a whole lotta malarkey, at December 21, 2025 08:52 AM (Pmfrl) 223

"On the other hand, if you're carrying out a task where you know what to do you are likely better off doing it yourself, because you will end up with fewer and less severe bugs and a much better understanding of what the code is doing."
My worry with this approach is that entry-level programmers learn their craft by doing simple; but with these routine tasks being offloaded onto AI, young people are denied the opportunity to learn "what to do". In the short run, this makes sense. In the long run, it means that there will be no younger, experienced programmers to step into the place of senior personnel who quit or retire or die. Ultimately, the entire industry will lack the experience of coding, leaving it at the mercy of AI. Which will be a catastrophe. Posted by: Nemo at December 21, 2025 12:40 PM (4RPgu) 249
