38 NIC: Network Interface Card. Also used to describe the RJ45 network port on most modern motherboards. If you have one of the latter, just buy a new NIC for about $15 on Amazon. Insert in PCiE slot and you are good to go.

45 If it is a hardware issue, hopefully it is limited to the wi-fi card that committing suicide. If it is a software issue I have found repair shops tend to recommend nuking the OS and starting over from scratch - that is a day gone right there. Good luck, Ace, hopefully it is something minor.

It is the only viable option, since nobody is going to pay for hours of IT work to diagnose how Apple or Microsoft borked your computer and to apply the ultimate corrections.

I have spent days manually undoing botched MS updates on a machine I really needed to get the data off of (not mine), and nobody except Hunter spending China/Ukraine cash is going to pay that kind of money.

84 There was some discussion yesterday about the "surge pricing" for things like Uber. Well, having used Uber last night and this morning under conditions that should have really jacked up the prices, the results were ... different.

This is holiday season in NYC (millions of tourists) with heavy rain. The cost of private rides like Uber should be through the roof. But they were actually less than usual, with plenty of cars available.

How is this possible? Possibly, I got lucky in terms of timing and location. But more likely, the surge model worked, in that it enticed more drivers to go out searching for riders, which increased the supply of cars That put downward pressure on prices, to the point where they were actually less than usual (at least in my circumstances).

Interesting, if nothing else.

When ethernet first came onto the scene, Network Interface Cards (NICs) were an add-on item that you plugged into an open motherboard slot. They still exist. As the tech matured, the networking chips were just integrated onto the motherboard, freeing up expansion slots or allowing for smaller computers/laptops. If your onboard NIC fails, there is always the option of adding an addon card or a USB to WiFi or a USB to ethernet dongle. They're dirt cheap, too.

The overcredentialed admins don't actually have any practical skills to do their jobs — so just invent a bunch of busywork for themselves and others, demand six figures, and out of an inflated sense of importance, hire a bunch of assistants to do busywork for them.

This results in a lot of overhead — salaries are the biggest expense category at Brown — and not so much money left for facilities (no security cameras), dorms (lots of flooding and lead paint), or food (poorly regarded).

But at the end of the day, it usually doesn't matter! Unlike other schools, Brown doesn't need safe facilities, nice dorms, or tasty food to attract students because everybody goes to Brown for the Ivy League brand.

175 When ethernet first came onto the scene, Network Interface Cards (NICs) were an add-on item that you plugged into an open motherboard slot. They still exist. As the tech matured, the networking chips were just integrated onto the motherboard, freeing up expansion slots or allowing for smaller computers/laptops. If your onboard NIC fails, there is always the option of adding an addon card or a USB to WiFi or a USB to ethernet dongle. They're dirt cheap, too.

It was like 10 or 20 men full time to do a job at 1/100 efficiency.

197 Network Engineer - sounds like your wireless nic is shot. You could disable it and then re enable it but as other have already said super best bet is to spend 12 on a wifi dongle.
