Hi KT: I wasn't sure if anyone had updated AofS people who had donated to Shep's Place in honor of Jewells (Julie McGuire). I was in contact with Shep's Place, and wanted everyone to know that the donation goal for naming a room for Jewells at their new facility had been met. Shep's Place asked that their thanks be extended to everyone at Ace of Spades who donated in Jewells' name. Well done all! Thanks to all in the Horde who donated. We so loved to read Jewells' updates on the special pups at Shep's Place. ![]() ![]() These photos are from 2010 when we had two Abyssinian kittens in the house, but they were interested in the Hannukah menorah upstairs and the Christmas "tree" downstairs. That year we set up the Charlie Brown Christmas Tree and had to practically weld the lone ornament to it or it would have been batted all around the living room; couldn't leave the menorah attended for a second while the candles were burning, either! Use whichever pictures you feel work best. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and yours, and thanks for running the wonderful Pet Thread! -- TankascribeThose kitties present a challenge for decorators! Thanks for sending in the photos! ![]() ![]() Please see attached pictures of my Christmas elves!! Camilla is the small girl --a terrier mix--who used to help my contractor as a pup. She loves walks, treats and Christmas sweaters. Alexis is the Australian Sheppard mix that was dumped on the road in rural central Texas. Unbelievable anyone could abandon such a sweet, smart girl who LOVES to herd cattle, chase cats and chew on EVERYTHING!! I thought it was a fast kitten, but it turns out there were two kittens: One in the window, and one clinging like a koala bear about four feet up the trunk of a tree. We eventually adopted them and named them Nico (Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli) and Cisco (Francisco Domingo Carlos Andres Sebastián d'Anconia—I know, I know, in the book the nickname was Frisco, but…There are some cats who know how to appreciate Christmas! ![]() Goodtime Christmas Charlie BoswellEveryone must love Charlie! Hello. This week, temperatures dipped into the single digits and Sakura decided to try out being an indoor cat. I still have to keep her separate from the others. She currently hangs out in the room where the Christmas decorations are stored. It's adjacent to the main part of the the basement, but that is Bean's domain and she is not yet welcome there.

I think my neighbor's cat loves me. She always hanging around when there's any activity in the yard, and I'm pretty sure she's the one that butchers birds on my porch from all of the feathers blowing around.

My current "pet" is a possibly albino (or at least white morph) house spider that I captured and have not yet taken photos of.

Mr Senegal had a big day yesterday. While he is often out of his cage, he is rarely outside. We went to the Birds Plus for an affordable flight feather clipping. Freaking vets demand $250 now! Tests, you see. Hmmph. Then to Super King market where the goodies live. Barbari bread with sesame seeds on top! He was tired (me too!) getting home.

Our neighbor's cat has been visiting lately, and this week came over and batted Mr. Bar-the-Door on the foot, said "feed me now" and when he came out with food she had two kittens on each side. She is now coming in the house for more food and we are working on socializing the kittens. We think the daddies may belong to other neighbors. Posted by: KT at December 20, 2025 04:10 PM (7vIsy) 14
New pup (10 months) went in for X-rays yesterday. She started limping on right front leg couple weeks ago. She runs ok but when she stops raises paw. It doesn't appear real bad or painful but it's new. Vet thinks it's soft tissue problem. Not sure what that means. Sending her X-rays to Mizzou for further review.

There is a black cat that eats here sometimes. I may have mentioned him. I found out on FB that another neighbor also feeds him and he has an owner. Yesterday, I was headed home and saw a guy calling him over, so I stopped to talk to him. This guy also is not the owner but the cat sleeps at his house. He said the owner doesn't take care of the cat. It has an amazing ability to slip off any collar. You would think the cat would be huge, but it is thin (likely worms). It seems to have maximized its support network.

Afternoon, Pet Folken,
Nico and his friends are very handsome! They sound like a super-handful. Not even Marie-Antoinette ever learned how to open screen doors. Her successor Tatiana the Wonder Siberian learned how to open a kitchen cabinet and a kitchen drawer, and pull out things she wanted to play with. Dagny La Siberienne currently opens the same cabinet, which is where I keep the kitty treats, but she doesn't pull anything out. The Abyssinians sound like extra handfuls as well. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at December 20, 2025 04:16 PM (wzUl9) 21
As for the "no dogs on the bed" rule: I used to think it was not "sanitary" for cats to be on kitchen counters, and had a running struggle with Arizona the big red part-Coon about it. By the time black cat Marie-Antoinette came along, I had given up. "It's easier to clean the counter than police the cat."

As for my furry thugs: Stirling the great black sleeps with me nearly every night, at least for part of the time. Dagny the aloof kitten (well, like her "brother," she's over three years old now) often curls up between my pillow and the next one. I turn over on my right side and find a fluffy gray tail in my face. This, I suppose, is her idea of showing affection.

But I still call my two "kittens" even at over age three, so I can imagine Tankascribe is doing the same. Our Abys, Gadget and Gizmo (named by DH, not me) were the best little cats ever. Unfortunately Gadget developed FiV and died at barely two years old, which was devastating as our cats always live to be twenty or close to it. Gizmo was exposed to the virus and was a carrier but never developed the diseases so she became The Only Cat and lived to be 13. She was much loved the entire time; I also painted her portrait many times. She passed away two years ago and we haven't gotten any kitties because we'd like to travel and also move away from our blue-run area. Then we'll get new cats!

Abyssinians are a lovely breed of "oriental" cat; they're long and leggy with pointed faces. They behave a lot like dogs and will play fetch. Gizmo would growl if somebody knocked at the door and constantly followed us from room to room. They're not "picking up" cats but love sitting next to you and being stroked and petted. Pick one up and voop! they've slithered out of your grasp and lit out for the tall timber. They are also smart and can get into things. They don't meow a lot, which is where they're superior to Siamese cats, IMHO.

Not too late to the pet thread today? My late oldest brother's ex is here for tonight's Nutcracker ballet, and brought her cute pint-sized dog Othello with her. She and Daisy the mad Malinois didn't play too well together. Growly and nippy. We kept Daisy on a leash. Othello was confused by all the excitement - wanted pets, waggy tail but growling at the same time.
That pup on the bed up top looks like it might be a Malinois. I was just telling how when we got Daisy, she quickly learned we didn't want her on the guest bed or the couch. Which lasted until Daughter's and Son's dogs visited and jumped on both freely; we gave up on that. Daisy still knows not to get up on our bed, though, so there's that. Happy critterday, pet people. I'm still feeding the cat that lives in the disused car wash. We are two years into this arrangement. The current cats that show up for food are Otto, a tuxedo cat with a Kitler moustache, and the cat who sits on my neighbors porch. I expect what he gets from me is only part of his support system. A small black kitten-cat shows up intermittently. I call her Babymonster.

Gotta catch 'em early before they start scratching stuff up, Opinion fact. Sometimes using double-sided sticky tape (especially on a corner) will help deter, but once they get going on a spot, you're doomed. You also have to find out what sorts of things they like a scratch as it differs: corrugated cardboard, fabric, carpet, etc. One of our cats loved sharpening his toes on that thick plastic foam stuff you wrap around exposed pipes. DH had some out in the garage and it got ripped to shreds.
