  • LG has force-installed Microsoft Copilot on its smart TVs. (Tom's Hardware)

    And you can't remove it.

Planning to buy Samsung instead? Same deal with their TVs and Google Gemini.

  • The KTC H27P3 is a 5k monitor. (The Verge)

It covers 99% of the DCI-P3 colour space and offers 500 nits of brightness and a 2000:1 contrast ratio. Only 60Hz at full resolution, but if you drop it down to 2560x1440 it can handle 120Hz. HDMI, DisplayPort, and USB-C are on offer for inputs. It nominally offers 10-bit colour but that's through PWM - it's really just a regular 8-bit panel.

All of that stuff is commonplace in semi-professional monitors, so why mention it?

According to the article (I couldn't verify this myself) it's currently discounted to $355 on Amazon.

  • How the CIA lost a radioisotope thermoelectric generator. (New York Times)

The article refers to it as a "nuclear device" every single time, trying to play up the danger, citing concerns that it might break down and pollute the pristine waters of... The Ganges.

Anyway, they know exactly where it is. At the top of a mountain. Probably.

  • Hard drive prices soared in the most recent quarter along with everything else. (Tom's Hardware)

    By 4%.

  • Searching UTF-8 text at 5GB/s using AVX-512. (Ash Vardanian)

It's an impressive trick, but mostly because Unicode (and UTF-8 in particular) is utterly insane.

5 Well. I was going to say that memory prices seemed to have stopped increasing, but no, they've gone up another 10% or so in the past week.

64GB of Crucial DDR5-5600 SO-DIMMs (laptop memory) now costs A$949, up from about A$250 a couple of months ago.

The mini-PC I just bought, which includes 64GB of Crucial DDR5-5600 SO-DIMMs, cost A$989 for the entire system.

The Amazon link on The Verge has it at $569 now.
It reads “At Checkout” on the link button, but even if I put it in the Amazon cart it’s still $569 and I don’t see a coupon button anywhere.

KTC is another Chinese brand like AOC & INNOCN that are undercutting everybody else on cheaper monitors.

They all make some cheaper Mini-LED displays with multiple dimming zones for much cheaper prices than their bigger name competitors offer in Mini-LED and OLED.

I can exclusively report that the fifth unnamed arrested suspect in the Turtle Island Liberation Front New Year's Eve mass bombing terror plot is Trantifa militant Micah James Legnon (center photo, in blue).

Legnon is on a federal hold in Lafayette, La. He is a trans activist and identifies as a female. His social media is filled with posts calling for the m—rder of people he labels as "fascists."

Authorities say the Turtle Island Liberation Front, a far-left communist "decolonization" terror group, planned to blow up ICE agents and locations with homemade bombs. Audrey Illeene Carroll, 30; Zachary Aaron Page (trans), 32; Tina Lai, 41; and Dante Gaffield, 24, are the other comrades arrested in Los Angeles after they were caught allegedly traveling to the desert to test their explosives.

Legnon is an ex-Marine and a former cop.

**shrugs** The usual. I have been having some vivid dreams lately (two nights ago, I was somehow cast in the Burton / Taylor Cleopatra), but also a lot of night sweats, which I need to investigate.

My writing friend and muse just won an award for independent writers. I know 'awards' are a dime a dozen and I am happy for her, but it hurts.

I won't go into details, but I have found out - to my dismay, but also to my interest, as it brings clarity - exactly how fatuously superficial the term 'friend' is.

As I said upthread, 56 days until retirement. I hope.

And yes, it's as DEI/queer as possible.

are people claiming to be Turtle Island Liberation Front? First I'm hearing of it

it appears the FBI is referencing a fictional group to justify real world actions goaded some folks into doing something indictable.

I emailed them...which probably means that I just accidentally emailed a dummy email address owned by DHS.

So, basically, the same kind of shit the FBI used to pull so they could publish a press release about how they prevented yet another terrorist attack after 9/11 by getting a bunch of alienated people from targeted and surveilled communities to basically entrap themselves.

83 The 5K monitor, do not need, these old eyes can barely see the difference between 720p and 1080p.

Show of hands, how many are using a computer monitor as a TV since all the TV's are full of "smart" chickenshit bull shit?

84 I have an LG 'Smart' TV, and found one weird trick to keep Copilot off. Every single time I turn the TV on (I mostly use it as a video game console display), it tells me I need to connect it to the Internet. I just politely tell it the electronic equivalent of "F - U". It's worked so far.
