This arctic air blast has been a pisser today. I had a low of 12.6F this morning -- which broke the low here from Jan this year -- and average temp is gonna be around 25F today. High was just 43F, and it plunged again at sunset, down to 24F now.

And this thing penetrated pretty far south. Myrtle Beach airport had a low of 19F this morning. Charleston got down around 22F, and Tallahassee was around 31F.

Not really accurate. In context almost all movements since '23 have been very small and slow, by recent historical standards and expectations. Nature of the beast, with the limited capabilities of both sides, drones, and fixed fortifications.

What I've called the Glacier War (Gletscherkrieg) has continued, with the Russians making very slow advances. But the Russians are now at the last significant "line" of fortified areas in the east (Pokrovsk is mostly taken, or will be soon). In the south (Zaporozhe) the Ukrainian situation has deteriorated badly.

Not really a stalemate, more a glacier creeping ahead on the Russian side. And no apparent factors that will change that.

Orwell's book opened my naive eyes to the fact that not all people are sincere in their beliefs and, as it turns out, the majority of people so fervent for socialistic quality are the exact people you want nowhere near being in charge of that utopia.

Then I read 1984/i] layer on and had my mind blown even more. Orwell, a socialist himself, knew how to open closed eyes on what living under a propaganda-surveillance state really entails.

The impression I have is that Russia is basically playing a waiting game (admittedly with some deaths happening nonetheless).

There's really nothing more they want, except to perhaps kill more Azov nazzies, but they don't want to control Ukraine, they don't want to kill any more Ukes than they have to, and they'd just as soon Europe figure out this war is over.

Once they do, a peace can be had.

Anyone still pretending Russia doesn't have this thing won is just lying to themselves. And others.

He is. Recovered somewhat from the worst of it. BP down to something sort of resembling normal, the spike was caused by the pain in his hip, which is nerve pain and miserable, but waning.

He gets a new knee in January, I believe, and gets a few nerve blocks for his hip, and he should be good as... well... not new, but serviceable.

Plus he has a fabulous wife, so there's that.

Roman concrete was a world wonder. We still can't do what they could do, probably because we are so risk-averse. Can you imagine forming up the Pantheon today? Not gonna happen. And we still do stupid concrete in seawater that needs to be replaced every 10 years. It was an utterly amazing architecture.

I’ve been following the Valero refinery situation closely, as I believe it is going to have a much greater effect than most realize - not just in California, but for the entire country. I wouldn’t be surprised if it ends shaving half a point off total GDP, from the disruption of shifting do much economic activity from California to the other states. (The entire west coast will be hit)

They’re saying it will be shut down in April, but I’d bet on it happening much sooner. I’ve seen reports that Valero has not been signing any new monthly supply contracts, which could mean that they begin shutting it down in January.

I see that now. For such sturdy animals, and beautiful, and useful, horses seem oddly fragile.

My dad, as a kid, ran a team to mow hay in Laramie, WY. He said they were always afraid to hit a skunk, because that could kill a horse. Also, they hated when they ran over a hornet nest because they had to get the horses well away from that in a hurry.

Dad was about 8 when he started driving that team with his brother who was about 6. Different times, certainly.

We had 90 mph gusts this weekend, in Palmer, which is 20+ miles from here. Luckily, we live in a different micro-climate, so we got about 40 mph max.

The funniest part were all of the yard trampolines flying all over the place. People lost any number of things, but got others during the storm, so I guess it all evens out.

Lots of listings on Facebook asking if anyone had seen somebody's trash can/shed/flags, etc. Pretty funny stuff.

I think we know pretty much what went into it, but I don't think we can duplicate it because it doesn't fit any building code extant. It was not steel reinforced, obviously, so doing that now is very risky. There is also the issue of quality control. They used very specialized mixes to achieve some amazing things, and they would be very non-standard to batch up and place, so you would need some seriously overpaid laborers and QC folks to supervise. It would be fabulous as a research project, certainly, but very expensive.

Maybe, but only because they've rebuilt a large MIC which is taking up a good part of the economy now.

The Russians have lost a lot of good men, and a lot of equipment and materiel for a piece of land whose lines haven't changed much in nearly four years.

The military itself may be working better now after all of the real world experience they've had, but this war has drained the country just like Afghanistan did for them and us.

Russia and Ukraine are now experts at drone production & warfare, so there's that much going for them considering that's where the future of war is going.

And then the combat robots come next.

As a young adult in the mid-80s I took a qualification aptitude test in a large classroom to try and get trained and become an Air Traffic Controller (was not selected), and I remember that Veterans were given bonus points and preference in hiring (I think they were even giving bonus points even back then to minorities and female applicants).

The Pantheon was insane. It looked like it was just built. My father was so engrossed in inspecting the structure and the marble work he didn't give a rats ass who was buried there. I kept calling to him "dad...dad look, its the tomb of Raphael". He would say yeah okay, and then go back sliding his hand along the marble chair rail looking trim. I went back over to him to tell him about another tomb, and he says "look at the miters on this" as he moved his hand along the wall and then feeling the entrance door. Yeah thats when I knew I lost him, he didn't give a shit about anything other than the building.

Do firms not have track records of their drivers? I nearly went into trucking. Everyone with a CDL goes into a database so that when they get any sort of ticket or DOT violation, it is held against them. Or, if you find out you have a contract out with a company that had an illegal driver involved in an accident? Tell them “sorry, but how can we tell you are operating in good faith? Deal over.”

There are ways to figure this out. Let’s find them.

One thing they did early on is look at their force structure of every unit and realize that the old "tank runs off to the horizon' crap was over. They rebuilt every unit to have more low level engineers to blow stuff up, more infantry to dig in, some added old tanks to act as artillery or blow holes in walls and went all in for leg infantry.

A wrinkle they have now is to put some men on motorbikes or 4 wheelers to scoot down the road a km or so, into the next town, dump the bikes and dig into the village before drones can react. These days once they take a strip of houses the garrison can't push them out. The Russians collect the bikes later and set them up for another dash, there or elsewhere.

161 The horses that my daughter races are barefoot, but they are only used for racing/practicing on sand and lose dirt arenas. They aren't worked any other way. I think, however, the competition horses might be shoed for traction, the ones they take to state and national competitions.

The girl gets to do a lot of trimming and cleaning. The thing I like about the sport is that they get the kids involved in taking care of their horse. Teaching them responsibility.

I don't necessarily like the cost, but I've become consigned to the fact that being a dad is just hooking a hose to my bank account and spraying all my money at other people.

NATO started as a defensive organization after WWII to prevent the expansion of the Soviet Union. There were 13 members including the US. The CCP have been talking about, planning and threatening Taiwan for seven decades. It's been an going since Mao who was obsessed with taking down the Kuomintang fascists in Taipei. There's also the added bonus of taking over the world's largest and most advanced silicon chip producer along with all the other tech product manufacturing that Taiwan dominates in.

If they ever succeed, like the Russians, in invading and taking that island by sitting on and refusing to move for years, then I've got no doubt a few more years down the road they'll be feeling their oats and looking for easy targets.

I look at China just like I think about 1930s Japan.
Except China has a million man army, with a lot of expendable men due to a demographic crisis caused by the One-Child Policy. They aren't building a military for looks.

I'm not betting the farm on it, but I think the Chinese are determined to dominate the Asia-Pacfic by hook, crook, or conquest as they feel The Middle Kingdom is destined to rule Asia just like it did way back when.

The Russians and Japanese, and perhaps India, are the biggest obstacles to that goal, along with the U.S. of course.

There was a video on a story about the attack on the sub that I watched - it was foreign language - which I presumed to be of the type of unmanned submersible they used.

They use the term submersible lightly. The body is certainly submerged. An antenna or multiple and other apparatuses (probably camera) are visible in the video.

They're very small and would be hard to detect in even the brightest of days and calmest of seas, but it would be enough to allow high speed comms, either terrestrial (fixed or mobile) or satellite. And the target was a moored sub in a harbor, which is not exactly a difficult target to track, requiring precise and rapid comms and course updates.

Yes, Putin conceded that NATO was already coming, so he created his own new buffer zones in Georgia, and now Ukraine that were already filled with Russian-speaking emigres that moved there during the USSR.

His direct goal was to consolidate his access to the Black Sea, and deny NATO full control of the Crimea.

This was more of a pre-emptive defensive move due to NATO expansion than a simple war of conquest in my eyes.

I don't want to see my country as the bad guys either, but everybody has got to admit our foreign policy over the past two decades has not been the most forward looking and was dominated by a post-Cold War, Lone Superpower attitude of: "We can do what we want. What are your going to do about it?"

The Artemis II mission may launch as early as Feb, if all goes well. Maybe be April or May. The SLS vehicle is all stacked in the VLB, and they've got it painted up with "American 250" theme, returning to the Moon (well, a crewed flyby) for the 250th birthday.

For the landing, that's the Artemis III, 2027 maybe, but probably not. Elon has got the contract for the lander, which will be a modified Starship. It will be launched separately and Orion will dock with it in a lunar HALO orbit.

And he better get to work on that.

Artemis II is sort of sad, basically a repeat of Apollo 8, which someone mentioned above. And it's not going to go into lunar orbit, just do a free-return flyby. It will go pretty far "above" the Moon, and if it goes as planned, that will set he record for the farthest humans have been from Erf, beating Apollo 13's record when it did it's free return trajectory due to the mishap.

Just looking, SpaceX says Starship HLS is proceeding as planned, and they're shooting to do testing in LEO next year.

To get Starship to the Moon, they're gonna have to refuel it in LEO, and that's going to take several "tanker" Starship launches. We'll see how this all works out.

That's what Pooky immediately said upon hearing that.

It's a small religious school in a tight-knit community (we literally went to school with Pookette's homeroom teacher). My not hearing back from the teacher yet probably means she's talking to his parents and/or the principal.

Pookette says he will keep saying more and more offensive/outrageous things until he gets a reaction. I have no idea if he killed a cat or not, I can see him saying it for a reaction then getting trapped in the lie.

I've only seen a couple long distance videos, one from behind and one with only a brief frontal view and he was wearing a hat and what looked like a mask. He appeared light skinned from what I could see.

Probably 15% of the students and faculty still wear masks at the University where I don't teach anymore, except for when I need bier money. They always made me edgy.
The University is also a gun free zone...except in my class. What the University didn't know, didn't hurt them.
