Rob Reiner's Mentally-Ill Son Arrested for Double Murder, Held on $4 Million Bail

As I'm sure you know, director/actor Rob Reiner and his wife were stabbed to death in their LA home.

Police questioned Reiner's son Nick, who reportedly had a history of mental illness.

Nick Reiner has now been arrested for the double murder of his father and mother.

Police have arrested Nick Reiner, the son of Rob Reiner, on a charge of murder following the death of the acclaimed Hollywood director and his wife, Michele Singer.
Nick Reiner, a 32-year-old screenwriter and the middle child of Rob Reiner and Singer, was taken into custody on Sunday, Dec. 14, and booked on Monday, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department records reviewed by USA TODAY. He is being held on $4 million bail.

Reiner has been the most forward-facing of the Reiner siblings. The writer has opened up extensively about his battles with drug addiction as well as homelessness, telling People in a 2016 interview that his struggles began as a teen.
He told the magazine he made his first visit to rehab at 15, and would return 17 times. His 2015 film "Being Charlie," which he cowrote, is loosely based on the experience. His dad directed the film.

Yes, one can offer a defense of Trump that the left has been doing this for three months with Charlie Kirk. But... in that case, what are we complaining about ourselves? If we support this kind of thing, then we can really have no objection to Amanda Seyfried or a hundred thousand other poisonous leftist murder cultists.

It sure would be nice if Trump would think once and a while instead of immediately jumping on Truth Social to show his ass.

For his part, despite how wretched Rob Reiner's politics are, and his Trump derangement (yes, he was in fact Trump deranged and I think he even conceded as much), he did not descend to Seyfried's level after Kirk's murder.

I disagreed with nearly everything Rob Reiner believed politically, but I won’t celebrate his death.

6 I am going to say something hard but it is not casual hate, Reiner died (understandably tragically no sarcasm) because he had what wound up being suicidal empathy which is a huge reason we are where are as a society.

He had a duty as a father to try to save his junkie kid, and he died in so doing. I am not mocking that and I am not making light of it. The Ukrainian and the Ginger in NC and IL are dead and burnt because of suicidal empathy on the part of officials.

The problem is that Vi Lyles and Brandon Johnson and the rest are not the CAUSE of the evil they are the symptom, there are a lot of people on this soil that love the criminal more than their political opponent.

Assuming that's true and in the absence of other information and with full knowledge that they 72-hour rule is in effect, my guess is that mom and dad finally said, "no. As to his artistic output, he's had a single modest box office success in nearly 30 years, the rest of his output has either been stinkers with the public or with critics, and often both. Whether his often fantastic early films balance out his later output, I'll leave to others to speculate.

298 I've dealt with some true schizophrenics over time, at least one that I know well committed suicide because of it. I've noticed that most tried to self medicate with illegal drugs, but I find it hard to criticize them for doing it; the legal drugs are expensive to get and often do little more than the illegal ones. Saddest yet were one or two I knew who could actually approach normality when they were heavily stoned, but who dropped back into hallucinations and paranoia whenever they tried to go straight.

It's really impossible to figure out what can be done for such people.

There is not much parents can do when an adult child is so mentally unstable that they are willing to live on the street instread of getting help. "The Princess Bride" will always hold a special place in my heart. I first saw it on a trip to Arizona with my uncle and his wife to visit my other aunt (my uncle's sister) when I was 12 years old in 1988. She was taking care of a ranch for the summer and the first night we were there she set me up in the living room pull-out couch and left the TV on to calm me. There were coyotes howling outside and she could see I was a bit scared. They had satellite TV at the time and there were a ton of channels to watch. My aunt went through the channels for a bit and then settled on "The Princess Bride".

That was my introduction to the movie and I have loved it ever since.

Saw "A Few Good Men" for the first time freshman year in college and immediately liked it. I remember my roommate and I playing over and over the scene where Tom Cruise rips into Demi Moore for being stupid and missing the day they taught law at law school and laughing our asses off.

In the case of Princess Bride, that's what happened - William Goldman, the author of the book, also wrote the screenplay for the movie, and made some changes from the book because he thought they would work better for the film.

I like Princess Bride, and you just have to take it for what it is - an Adult Fairy Tale, with Fairy Tale characters and a Fairy Tale plot. With that as a given, I think it's the most enjoyable and funny fairy tale ever put to film.

From what evidence I have, and it is scant, I think the Reiner household was a seething cauldron of anti-Trump sentiment that likely was never turned off. Rob had his father, Carl, stewing in it before he passed. I cannot imagine that it wasn't bubbling beneath the surface in Rob's own home and thus his kids were immersed in it, too.

Most of us are not interested in discussing political topics all the time. Discussing politics is practically the only thing that TDS aficionados wish to do. They champ at the bit to unload their political perspective on everything. Disagree with them even mildly and they shunt you off to the MAGA camp and then deem your opinions as not being worthy of their esteemed consideration.

Having not read it, I'll take your word for it. But scripts often read flat compared to a book and adaptions of a book often go very wrong (or right).

One can read Shakespeare as prose but it can be kind of clunky (unless you have a good imagination or better yet seen the play staged). But in its right milieu, the theater, it can be incandescent depending on the cast and director.

As you note, generally trying to put the play into a movie often does not work unless you have someone of the mastery of Welles doing the adaptation. Branagh more inspired and lively version versus Olivier's traditional yet duller version also comes to mind.

He said that when they were filming, he thought this was just some old guy they found, nothing special, but this guy was always extremely nice to him, treated him very respectfully and most of all gave him a lot of acting tips which were very useful at a young age.

Years later, when he got older, he was amazed to find out "you mean that was Peter Falk, the famous Actor? The guy with a 50 year career who treated me, a little kid, just like I was his equal and friend?" He had never known it at the time, and Falk was always just the quiet, unassuming guy he plays in the movie. Says a lot about his personality.

Yep. I had a cousin who had classic schizophrenia and a break with reality at 21yrs. Same eyes. Also saw the same eyes with mental patients in the ED.

It seems his parents tried everything and in the end none of it mattered. I don't "blame" the parents, but from reading of an interview with the nepo murderer's film of being homeless and drug addled...he blamed his parents. For listening to therapists.

He manipulated his parents and gas lighted the blame. Which is now sadly in retrospect.

I have yet to see a photo where there is life in his eyes. Even the one of him as a kid he looks sort of mean. Dunno. My cousin was not mean but he (9mo older than me) was always nervous and weird. Clung to me and my brother in HS and college as he could make no friends of his own weird.

He once tried to come on to me and I told him I would kill him if he touched me again. And I meant it (ok, I probably would have simply beaten the pulp out of him, then told Daddy).

IMHO. It's a night and day difference. Charlie was killed for his opinion. Reiner because of a mentally ill child. Both are tragic, I wouldn't wish Reiner's demise on anyone. Luck of the draw - some of it in managing some rental property on the side (why do they find me?) and some in having a close family member who's dealt with mental illness off and on. It never really goes away.
Some people can tell you about all the famous and important people they've met by chance throughout their lives; I can tell you about all the crazy ones.

One thing I've realized was something Rob Reiner was quoted as saying in one of the articles I read today; too many of the professionals involved in treatment seem to have a vested interest in prolonging the problem, rather than curing it.

Yep. My late cousin's pupils always seemed blown, even as a kid. Like this Nick guy's. He'd be in a family photo and my brother and I looked like normal goofy kids and he looked demented. I just thought he was weird all of my life.

He did his psychotic break when I was over a thousand of miles away in college.He went to our grandmothers. Talked wacko with her. Left his car there and walked to the railroad and rode on top of a freight car for hours. This was the start.

His life ended when he was alone and refusing a half way house. His family made sure he had no guns for decades. He died apparently of hypothermia because he did not pay the gas bill. His brother tried to help him but he talked nasty about his wife. It is a sad cycle of stress for families for decades, and I am sure the Reiners, for all their $, had the same cycle.

My cousin was thrown out of Kroger for acting weird. Could not keep a simple job. It went on for 30yrs and after his parents died. Abusing his own mother before she died in a nursing home

it's actually worse for the people who suffer from mental illness, especially schizophrenia. They are prisoners in their own bodies, with their brains directing them in ways that they have no control over.

Great advances have been made in medication and treatment. But the afflicted person has to stay on the medication regime religiously, or very bad things can happen.

I try to take some of those older films and show my kids how they did things with acting, lighting, cameras, real crowds of extras and animals, sets, etc., versus CGI.

They are in the local theater program - just finished a run of Seussical, and I think it is informative, interesting, and inspiring to them as young actors.

I think though the CGI in movies actually is looking worse and worse and more fake though through overuse.

I ended up listening to Christmas music and a number, Put One Foot in Front of teh Other came on with video. It comes from the stop action Santa Claus is Coming to Town TV short.

Yet, despite using obvious models being moved back and forth and bit of matte painting, due to its analog nature (shot on film then transferred), it looked warmer and homier than most cold CGI effects that cost millions more in blockbuster movies.

I also think that greenscreen poisoning affects actors delivering lines quite a bit making them flatter with nothing to react to.

Thanks, but I only dealt with him once he lost it. He called me about 2yrs into schziphrenia and wanted to come live with me and my roommate "while he got a job." I was in nursing school out West and thought,"Oh, hell, no." Said that there was no room and that was the end of it.

Decades later, in FL, I received a strange cig smelling cylinder "mail" from him. It had gone through some sort of bomb thing at the airport (had markings of the airport). It was a weird drawing of people, like a 3rd grader, supposedly at a concert in a park I went to with him and my brother. I don't remember the concert at all.

I was pretty freaked out about this "letter" and called my mother, who got one as well about something else. I was also mortified that our local beach town mailman delivered this stinky thing wrapped in Christmas paper, like a British cracker, in July.

I don't think it is *just* overuse. A major contributing factor is modern moviemaking does not plan in the first place and thinks that changing CGI to cover errors or on the spot plot changes is cost free. Therefore the CGI is always reacting in a panic, and burning themselves out. With older tech, you could not just go to the model makers and tell them to remake the Millenium Falcon or something. But erasing a dude's mustache in every frame is somehow just doable.

Ace, thanks for pointing out Trump's vile hypocrisy on this matter. Though I have been a staunch Trump supporter, I am extremely disappointed in his attack on Rob Reiner by basically claiming that Reiner brought this horrific murder on himself.
Indefensible!
I could not stand Rob Reiner's political positions nor his overall ideology. He said plenty of anti-conservative and anti-MAGA things I found deeply offensive. Nevertheless, I was heartbroken when I learned he'd been murdered.
AND THEN LATER, I saw the Piers Morgan clip of Reiner's compassionate reaction to Charlie's murder. That man may have identified as being Jewish. But his reaction was beautifully Christian. RIP.
