Sunday Overnight Open Thread - December 14, 2025 [Doof]

doof-snowy-bw.jpg

Howdy Hordelings! Welcome to the Sunday night ONT. Cold and snowy in my neck of the woods today. How about yours? How's the holiday season coming along for you? What's on your mind tonight? Check out the content, then jump on in to the gray boxes.

Army Navy Game Yesterday

President Trump was there and received a very warm welcome

Amazing atmosphere for the National Anthem

Seems like the Cadets and Midshipmen don't think Orange Man is bad.

Big Joe is Good People

Long tweet but worth the read.

doof-big-joe.jpg

"I'm Big Joe. 58. Long-haul trucker.
Been driving 18-wheelers for 34 years. Sleep in my cab. Eat at truck stops. Talk on CB radio to stay awake.
Lonely job. But someone's gotta move America's stuff.
Two years ago, I'm driving through Nebraska. 2 a.m. See a car pulled over. Hazards on.
Woman standing outside. Looking scared.
I pulled over. She backed away when she saw me. I'm 6'4", 280 pounds, covered in tattoos. I get it.
"Ma'am, I'm not stopping to hurt you. I'm stopping to help. What's wrong?"
Her car died. Phone dead. She'd been there three hours. Nobody stopped.
"Where you headed?"
"Hospital. Omaha. My daughter's in emergency surgery. I have to get there."
No hesitation. "Get in. I'll take you."
"In your truck?"
"Safest vehicle on this highway."
She hesitated. Then got in.

***

Started a code. "Code Angel" we call it. When truckers see someone broken down, stranded, in trouble, we stop. We help.
Word spread. Truckers across the country joined.
Last year, we helped 1,200 people. Dead batteries. Out of gas. Medical emergencies. Domestic violence victims escaping. Runaways needing safe transport to shelters.
We've got a network now. Truckers, CB radio, truck stops. Someone needs help? We mobilize.

***

So tomorrow, if you break down, if you're stranded, if you're running from something bad,
Look for the trucks. We're watching. We're listening.
We might look rough. But we'll get you home.
Because the highway doesn't have to be lonely.
Not when 4,000 truckers refuse to drive past people in trouble."

Bravo, Big Joe - and all of you other truckers out there. Please check out the whole thing and share this story.

AI is Asshoe

Another long tweet, but well worth the read.

Last quarter I rolled out Microsoft Copilot to 4,000 employees.
$30 per seat per month.
$1.4 million annually.
I called it "digital transformation."
The board loved that phrase.
They approved it in eleven minutes.
No one asked what it would actually do.
Including me.
I told everyone it would "10x productivity."
That's not a real number.
But it sounds like one.
HR asked how we'd measure the 10x.
I said we'd "leverage analytics dashboards."
They stopped asking.

***

The CFO asked about ROI.
I showed him a graph.
The graph went up and to the right.
It measured "AI enablement."
I made that metric up.
He nodded approvingly.
We're "AI-enabled" now.
I don't know what that means.
But it's in our investor deck.

***

Adoption means mandatory training.
Training means a 45-minute webinar no one watches.
But completion will be tracked.
Completion is a metric.
Metrics go in dashboards.
Dashboards go in board presentations.
Board presentations get me promoted.
I'll be SVP by Q3.
I still don't know what Copilot does.
But I know what it's for.
It's for showing we're "investing in AI."

AI adoption is the latest way to virtue signal. By asshoes.

It's that time of the week - when we turn the ONT over to our good friend Piper for a bit. Here's this week's fashion pr0n.

Ho Ho Holy Mother of Pearl, Look at These Sweaters

Last night was the Ace of Spades HQ Club ONT Christmas party, and your faithful friend here sacrificed her retinas for you. All for you. The theme this year was apparently "You will have colored lights and you will like it!” And oh boy, they were everywhere. I arrived, as would be expected, in unimpeachable couture while surrounded by... whatever the opposite of that is.

Let us begin.

• AOP: He arrived wearing what he described as "my dress sweater" which featured Santa Claus riding a unicorn while shooting guns made of candy canes. The unicorn had googly eyes. Actual googly eyes that moved when he walked.

IMG_6041rr.jpg

• Bezerker: Wore a 3D felt Christmas tree sweater with battery-powered fairy lights that pulsed like a seizure in fabric form. He kept yelling “I’m a tree, hug me!” while sequins rained off him like dandruff from a disco ball. One of the bulbs shorted out mid-evening and started smoking.

• CBD: A hand-knitted abomination that appeared to be Santa Claus wrestling Krampus while riding a flamingo. The flamingo had LED eyes that changed color every time someone said the word “eggnog.” By 10 p.m. the flamingo was strobing demonic red and CBD was yelling into the cheese tray he doesn’t even celebrate Christmas.

• Doof: A sweater with red and green stripes that somehow managed to clash with each other, paired with a light-up Rudolph nose that blinked in Morse code (I believe it was spelling out "RUSH"). He claimed it was vintage. I countered that "vintage" is not a synonym for "crime against humanity."

• J.J. Sefton: Showed up in a sweater that was 50% menorah, 50% Christmas tree, 100% war crime. It lit up to spell “OY TO THE WORLD” in alternating Hebrew and English. He claimed it was “inclusive.”

• Scampydog: I am honestly traumatized. I hope you never get the pine tree sap out of…I just can’t.

IMG_6043rr.jpg

• Perfessor Squirrel: A sweater depicting cats in Santa hats playing poker, their little 3D paws were posed holding tiny felt cards with pantless ladies on them. He kept insisting it was “kitsch”. I needed three more champagnes.

• Buck Throckmorton: Wore a sweater that simply said “NAUGHTY” in glitter script across the chest, except half the glitter had fallen off so it read “AUG T”. He spent the entire night telling people it was performance art about the price of metals.

• T-Rex: A bright red sweater depicting a T-Rex trying to wrap presents. “It’s ironic”, he explained.

IMG_6042rr.jpg

• Tonypete: A tasteful black turtleneck… underneath a light-up sweater vest of snowmen doing unspeakable things to each other with candy canes. When confronted, he just said “HEYoooooo”.

• MisHum: A sweater with a giant QR code on the front. When you scanned it, it rickrolled you to Frank Zappa’s Merry Christmas album.

• Nurse R: Arrived in a sweater that looked perfectly normal from the front (classic Fair Isle). From the back: a full-sized embroidered Nicolas Cage as Santa screaming “MERRY CHRISTMAS, YOU FILTHY ANIMALS.”

• JQ: A sweater covered in tiny multi color sequined felt hats. She looked like she had been attacked by a Bedazzler-wielding toddler who had recently discovered caffeine.

IMG_6044rr.jpg

• Ace: A fractal reindeer sweater. Reindeer wearing sweater wearing reindeer wearing sweater, ad infinitum. He paired it with corduroy pants the color of despair and announced, “This is my formal holiday look.” I have never respected and feared a man more.

The pièce de résistance of the entire evening was when someone (I refuse to name names but his initials are Tankdemon) started an ugly sweater contest late. The voting was done by applause. There was a three-way tie for first place because everyone was too drunk to count properly. Democracy is dead.

Merry Christmas, you magnificent degenerates. Never change. Except your sweaters. Dear heavens, please change your sweaters.

------

Thanks, Piper! Great time at the party last night. Special thanks to Club regular and bartender JQ for these lights she found for each of the 3 D's.

Many thanks to my fellow Club ONT hosts Dino and Doggo for their efforts with the Club! Not just last night, but week in and week out -- you guys are the best!

22 Something I've been meaning to mention: Trump went to a military school and that clearly shaped his character. While he has a free-wheeling personality, when it comes to customs and courtesies, he is still very much a young man who knows how to snap a salute.

So kinda. Beast Barracks is the summer Cadet Basic training prior to the academic year. The disciplinary climate is somewhat more relaxed in the academic year.

(Back in the old days it was hard not like now! As with everything.)

If Army Beat Navy the plebes would get "fall out" until the Christmas break - and afterward back to the old grind.

Of course in the really old days the plebes didn't even go home at Christmas break. So they had things to say about later classes having it easier, too.

If it’s 45°F. and 20% humidity, that’s not too bad. 45°F. and 80% humidity, the damp seeps into everything, reducing the warmth of clothes & bedding or insulation to a great .. degree. “I’m freezing!” Even though it ain’t.

It's not the heat, it's the humidity. ... same goes for cold. But usually inside homes in winter, it is very dry since cold air with high RELATIVE humidity does not hold much moisture, so when warmed it makes homes very dry. My humidity inside with the wood stove going is about 20%, while it is 76% outside.

——-

Oh, they were identified immediately. They just aren’t announcing their names, releasing the names, or revealing who it was to us, the public. My favorite in the passive aggressive category, they’ll refuse to release the names of the perpetrators of violent crimes or murder, citing “notification of next of kin”.

Words mean things, but strangely enough the very people who actually make their living by them tend to use them in strange or needlessly complicated as well as incorrect ways, these days most stories require a certain amount of reverse-engineering to make sense.

With this weather station, I'm really enjoying watching the behavior.

Last night was something just before that front blew through with the arctic mass behind it. Last night, it cooled down to about 45F just after sundown. Then it steadily warmed up, and got downright balmy, and even sprinkled a bit. Today's high was about 58F, around 4:30AM. Dew point got up to 56F. Then, the front came through around 6AM and temp and dew point starting dropping.

Dew point drop was dramatic, over 50F by 6PM. Temp had a little local low of 42F by 9AM, and then it tried to warm up with the sun, peaking at solar noon just under 50F. Dew point was falling the whole time.

And then, by sundown, temp was 32F. It's now 21F. Dew point bottomed at 2F, but it's moistened up to 6F now.

NBC4 update

"New details are beginning to emerge about Benjamin Erickson, the person of interest in the Brown University mass shooting that left two dead and nine others injured.

According to NBC News, public records indicate that as of 2024, his residence was an apartment in Washington, D.C., and that he previously lived in Wisconsin. He was registered to vote in Washington, D.C., as recently as 2023, with party affiliation listed as “statehood.”

Separate Wisconsin voter registration records from 2020 listed “military” under voter information.

Initial public records searches do not indicate that he had a previous criminal record.

According to a statement from Army Spokesperson, LTC Ruth Castro: “Benjamin W. Erickson was an Infantryman (11B) in the Regular Army from May 2021 to November 2024. He has no deployments and left the Army in the rank of specialist."

I need to go to horror freight. Every year for Christmas I grab something for the shop that they might not have, but I'm used to using. This year is probably going to be 1/4" drive deep metric sockets. We rarely deal with metric stuff, but when something does pop up I don't feel like using a 3/8 drive for a frigging 10 mm socket. I also grab something for a friend of mine who continually irritates me by completely ignoring the rule of the right tool for the right job. I wanted to blow torch him when I saw him using a wrench to beat a bolt out of a hole. He has a good amount of tools in constant disarray, so I'm thinking about some things in the organization category. In his case its probably right up there with getting a laptop for an orangutan.

Tangential: I watched Tucker Carlson's 9/11 series. Not substantially different from Loose Change from back when that came out.

People wonder what happened to Tucker. He was on Joe Rogan a while back and said, essentially, I used to believe all the good stuff about America (his father was Reagan's head of VOA!) and then the IC went after a Presidential campaign and all the scales fell from his eyes. Not his words, exactly, but my synopsis. I get it, felt the same way after Kristol proclaimed the primacy of the Deep State. I said after that can't refute any conspiracy theories out of hand. But just because a lot of conspiracy theories are true doesn't mean all of them are. But that seems to be where Tucker - and Candace - are.

A real cutoff saw can be had for about a C-note. A lot more capacity, and faster cutting than an angle grinder is able to do. I own one here at home, and one at the AZ place. Small stuff, like bolts and rebar, cut freehand with angle grinder. I do a lot of cutting with a thin zipwheel in an air-powered die grinder.

Posted by: sven at December 14, 2025 11:38 PM (MUJd1)

What sven is saying:

There is one confirmed victim of the Brown shooting - a young lady who was VP of Brown College Republicans. There is some talk that the shooting took place at a meeting of the Brown College Republicans.

I am shocked that there are enough Republicans at Brown for there to be a chapter. For a random event to just happen to kill a prominent member would seem highly unlikely. Stranger things have happened, of course.

BUT - in our speculation about why are they not talking about the shooter, that does leave open the question - why haven't they told us about the victims. There was some speculation with the Australia massacre that the target was Jewish students, but it does not seem that Ella Cook (the identified victim) was Jewish. So that seems unlikely, also.

376 Reiner died and it is sad and I am not going to crap on him for being a raging leftist.

I am going to say something hard but it is not casual hate, Reiner died (understandably tragically no sarcasm) because he had what wound up being suicidal empathy which is a huge reason we are where are as a society.

He had a duty as a father to try to save his junkie kid, and he died in so doing. I am not mocking that and I am not making light of it. The Ukrainian and the Ginger in NC and IL are dead and burnt because of suicidal empathy on the part of officials.

The problem is that Vi Lyles and Brandon Johnson and the rest are not the CAUSE of the evil they are the symptom, there are a lot of people on this soil that love the criminal more than their political opponent.

I do not know what the answer is.

There are a lot of militarily trained kids floating around with an interesting combination of military skill and being told their whole lives the most precious commodity on this planet is their ego....it frankly scares the hell out of me and I do not scare easy.

430 It begs the question- how do you arrest a guy in a huge public mass murder, release his name and all that, and in less than a day say “oops, sorry, never mind, never mind.” What kind of Keystone Cops are investigating this?

They could be Austrialian cops.

431 One of my favorite "range idiot" stories involves watching a guy who couldn't see his laser sight against the cardboard target while the sun was shining directly on it, so he decided to see if the laser was on by POINTING THE GUN AT HIS HAND to see if the little red dot would appear on his palm.

We left the range after his wife muzzle-swept us about five minutes later.

441 Ladies and Gentlemen, the Tiger from the Hangover, Mister Ed, and Bronys from Sea to Shining Sea,

The FIB Portland Office is pleased to announce that we have a persyn of interest in our custody at this time who walked to Portland on shoals from Provideniya in Siberia using similar paths to the ones traveled by our indigenous land trustees to allegedly engage in the grievous attack on a home economics study group in Kitchen Five.

It is important to remember in this time of peril that this is not an accusation and that despite a notarized and post marked letter of intent in both Cyrillic and English we still lack a motive at this time.

Continue in a state of vigilant awareness but not panic and resume your traditional winter solstice activities.

444 Shortly before we started dating, my wife-to-be bought a revolver with a laser pointer grip. First thing I did when I was teaching her how to shoot was to turn it off. Learn to use the sights. Ray Chapman wouldn't even tolerate a white front dot on a sight, and would take a can of "sight black" spray and hose down his students' guns.

446 Ladies and Gentlemen and Otherkyn, I want to begin by acknowledging that this press conference is taking place on land the FIB Portland office gained from the JayCees' who bought it at firesale Sheriff's tax prices when Bern and Ethyl Zanders went into debt after her hip replacement falling behind on property taxes, the Zanders family wound up with the deed to the land after the displacement of the Arapazowie tribe who had themselves settled in the abandoned area when the Kablowies had a die off after the Burmese Crotch Rot outbreak in 1181 after sailors from the Jin Dynasty arrived drunk from a kegger on the Sandwich Islands, this is in no way reflective of the Barking Goat claims on this soil dating back to 182BCE....... //FIB Portland

449 Good morning Ladies, Gentlemen, and Unicorns/Otherkyn I am pleased to report that with sunlight the FIB Portland office is now joining the ongoing manhunt for Thomas "Sitting Bear" Galvalone a registered member of the Arapazowie tribe accused of extortion, public indecency, and the the disappearance of 25 persons over a sixteen year period on the Arapazowie reservation. It is important at this time to remind everyone that despite the heinous activities Galvalone engaged in we not lose sight that he is the real victim here, and all of his actions are a result of things occurring six thousand years ago on the Siberian Steppes...... //FIB Portland

451 Ladies and Gentlemen, Non-Binaries, and Spectral Entities, I am pleased to announce that following an exhaustive search of local lodging establishments, the FIB Portland office has taken into custody a person of interest in the ongoing investigation into Thomas 'Sitting Bear' Galvalone. At the time of detention, the individual was found in possession of two firearms—while ballistics and linkage remain pending, we are confident this resolves the matter absent any discernible connection or motive. As always, remember that the true victims here trace their grievances to events on the Siberian Steppes millennia ago. Stay vigilant, but not alarmed. No further questions. //FIB Portland

453 Seems to me a laser sight would be useful for a nightstand gun. You wake to the sound of an intruder in the home. Grab the gun left-handed, paint the intruder with the laser. If the intruder is armed, and takes a shot at you, he will either aim for the laser, or aim to his right, because he assumes the gun with the laser is in your right hand. If he fires at you, you can shoot him dead on the spot.

457 Ladies, Gentlemen, Wiccans, Deities, Atheists, and people of all faiths...FIB Portland extends its sympathies to the people of Bondi Oz, and respect to the Oz Constabulary in their fortuitous apprehension of the duo whose motives and sympathies remain unknown.

This office concurs that it is unsporting for the assailants to leave improvised devices of unknown purpose with an unknown intent, at a Jewish religious festival. Remain vigilant to the global public, without giving into dread.

Endeavor to endure,
//FIB Portland
