The Morning Rant: Inflation!

punk-monkey.jpg

Inflation is a cold-hearted bitch. It steals our paychecks, and we will never recover the loss. Sure, compensation eventually catches up (mostly), but the gap between rising prices and rising wages is significant.

And inflation destroys any possibility of planning for many companies. How do you budget for next year or next quarter if you simply do not know how much your raw materials are going to cost?

Pricing competition becomes insanely difficult too! Revenue from today pays for product you sell tomorrow, but if inflation suddenly increases by more than you planned, how do you restock? You simply buy less, and...hope!

So this is good news. How the rancid whores in the media are going to spin this is anyone's guess, but decreasing inflation is a very good thing for the economy, and no matter how much they huff and puff and bullsh*t with the numbers, Americans are better off.

Inflation Cools to 2.7 Percent in November, Lower Than Expected

Price pressures may be cooling across the economy, with the 12‑month inflation rate slowing sharply in November.

The annual inflation rate eased to 2.7 percent last month—the lowest level since July—from 3 percent in September, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Economists had penciled in a reading of 3.1 percent.

The core consumer price index (CPI), which excludes volatile energy and food prices due to their noisy signals, also cooled to 2.6 percent from 3 percent in September. This represented the lowest reading since March 2021.

But even better than moderating inflation is this little nugget of pure golden deliciousness!

Tariff-sensitive items were little changed over the past 12 months.

The apparel index is up 0.2 percent year over year, while the new-vehicle index has risen 0.6 percent over the 12 months ending in November. Additionally, on an annualized basis, appliances have increased by 0.5 percent, smartphones have declined by 9.4 percent, and footwear has dipped by 0.1 percent.

And weren't we told by our betters that tariffs are inflationary? You know, those 26-year-old "journalists" who took one economics class in college and never attended because it was at 8:00AM and they were usually still high! The "journalists" and pundits confidently claimed that a one-time increase in the wholesale price of tariffed products would continue to push their prices up indefinitely. Of course no modern country has ever shifted revenue to tariffs so quickly, and the data simply aren't there to make anything more than a wild-assed-guess!

But they did it anyway, and it looks like they were just a little bit off in their predictions.

Nobody knows whether a tariff-based economy will function as well as President Trump has proclaimed, but the early indications are good, and the naysayers are being proven incorrect. Revenue from the tariffs is robust, which is also proving the President correct.

Last night's presidential address is an excellent start to the administration's focus on communicated to the American people what the President is doing to address inflation, employment, the return of manufacturing to America, the vanishing possibility of home ownership for many young Americans, and other economic challenges that we face.

I hope he keeps hammering home his efforts to redirect our economy toward Americans, and away from illegals, and the leeches of Europe. It is long past time!

=======

Tariffs barely have an effect on inflation, but if it's anything, it's deflationary.

It increases some prices which decreases demand which slows the flow of money, having fewer dollars chasing the same number of goods.

But it's small.

What really affects inflation is the Fed's power to increase the money supply, specifically M2.

That’s essentially what they’re doing with gas. The same people who scream about BIG OIL PROFITS all of a sudden are concerned that oil companies will suffer with cheap oil.

Our very own retard, ASS for the memo as well.

15 None of these credentialed "economists" ever seem to understand the huge multiplier, both up and down, that energy costs have on an economy, and especially oil prices. Energy is a significant factor in every good manufactured and sold, and it can drive prices up as well as help them go down.

By trying to get rid of all oil and gas related energy production, Europe have locked themselves into a future of high priced energy forever, without being able to take any advantage of falling oil prices. Meanwhile, the US and a few other manufacturer friendly spots are poised to steal away all of their industrial manufacturers.

Posted by: SMOD at December 18, 2025 11:11 AM (RHGPo)

20 No one (who knows what they are talking about) said tariffs are inflationary. Tariffs increase cost, and therefore prices, to the consumer. That is not inflation. When that happens, what is expected is that consumers (as a whole) will purchase less of the tariffed item(s) and shift spending to some other products. Reduced demand for an item usually leads to lowering of prices.

A simple one-dimensional test such as the CPI is not very instructional. I've never been a big fan of it regarding accuracy and there are many economists (a lot) who regard it as overstating inflation generally. I'm not sure what would be better, but breaking it down into different categories reduces the sample size and generally reduces accuracy (such as it is). You can flood the zone with indicators that will tell any story you want so again I would not read much into the CPI.

I am against tariffs because that is simply more and too much government interference in my life.

Posted by: Earl Schlobodowicz at December 18, 2025 11:12 AM (P7Iz+)

21 Inflation is a bit of a reset to the economy. Older folks such as some of those who are rumored to hang around here simply lose a fraction of the money they've saved over a lifetime, while younger workers will see their salaries increase to at least partially mitigate the inflation.

Not true actually. Short run yes, long run other factors come into play like technology changes, substitution effects, etc.

Perfect example are commodity food prices. Events happen to cause relative scarcity spikes and then prices recede.

Some prices are sticky--like real estate. In part because people have a loss preference avoidance aka sunk costs.

Complicated subject that is best dealt with individual goods than an overall average which is easily manipulated by choices of goods to figure the average.

Posted by: Its Go Time Donald
====
Actually it can and does. The old style of furniture manufacturing was metal springs, wood frame, and some sort of batting. High labor costs.

Some of the newer styles of a couch don't rely on those expensive materials because of the development of high density foam and thus less labor to produce so it can be sold for less.

What you are trying to do is compare a couch made by the same production techniques in the past or future. Says really nothing about other factors coming into play.

For the most part, where inflation hurts is not really material goods where you get technology improvements or substitution effects, but services and goods where they aren't making more of it, like land etc. The price of services is what is driving a lot of the loss in buying power--medical, education, insurance, etc. And that is related to cost of labor. We shall see if AI reduces service cost.

And energy is the one key good that government interference is probably driving inflation worsened by excise taxes.

As with almost all things, there are times when they are a great good for a nation, and times when they are not. It's important to know which, and getting locked on one side or the other can be disastrous.
While the US was growing, tarriffs were a vital tool leading to economic growth. Many manufactured goods could be brought in from England, etc which would be cheaper than those built in the US; but the tarriff equalized the cost and helped promote the growth of US based industrial manufacturing, which created a skilled workforce, which greatly grew the entire country.
The US allowed its manufacturing base to be hollowed out over the last 40 years or so, and its time to go through that process again.

What to do with all that money?
Then the Democrats figured out a grift that's still going strong today.

For most of our history, the concern of the US was fair trade with other countries, not totally free trade. In addition, tariffs and excise taxes were the main source of government revenue until the income tax came along.

The whole free trade bullshit was an extension of the Marshall Plan after WWII where the US stood dominant and thus allowed other nations to essentially treat us unfairly so that they could gather enough surplus to rebuild (done to keep them from turning Commie). That became ossified as once a government policy is enacted, you get plenty of special interest groups paying good money to Congress critters, etc. to keep the racket going well past its sell by date.

Aside from the price, petroleum makes virtually every product in civilization possible. Good luck growing enough wheat in Central Park to produce flour for upper West Side bagels that don't cost $85 each. Or going out from Bayonne in sailboats sorting out salmon from New Jersey whitefish to make lox.

Petroleum and indoor plumbing/running water are the foundation stones of Western Civilization.

131 Long read. Well worth it. PJ Media.

Chuck Schumer voted “Yes” for the Maritime Drug Law Enforcement Act of 1986 which authorized the military to fire on drug smuggling boats. The House approved it 392-16, and the Senate approved it 97-2. Both houses of Congress that year were Democrat dominated. Funny how Democrats don't say much about this today. As I asked yesterday, why the change in attitude? What is causing, in this case, Democrats to defend drug runners?

A boat in international waters not running a national flag is categorized in international law the same way a pirate is. Such boats have absolutely no national or international protections, and so, by the very definition of the thing, you cannot commit a war crime against them. This is the UN talking, not the GOP. So much for that claim from the Democrats.

The “expert” talking heads on the stupid box outlets actually tried to claim inflation ought not be an electoral issue in 2024 because monetary inflation was worse in other countries, around the world.

That’s weapons grade stupid right there. Reserve currency status of the US dollar allows the government to export much of the monetary inflation, though not all, along with all those dollars.

But the real issue, the currency is no longer tied to actual economic output or prudent borrowing and spending. There’s a reason there are “advocates” for sex change operations for illegal aliens on death row as a fundamental human right - in a reasonably sane economic system, there simply isn’t enough wealth to do stupid shit.

Choices have to be made. Economic triage, if you will. Ordinarily putting up invaders in luxury hotels while the locals get raped, beheaded, and/or set on fire ….

140 One critique of the Trump tariffs I have is it includes goods that the US doesn’t produce. Like for example coffee. There should be no tariffs on coffee since it’s not an industry we need to protect.

There is more than one way to protect domestic producers. Tariffs on coffee can induce (i.e. politely force) the coffee producing countries to remove their tariffs on stuff we do produce.

I think a lot of Army types were indifferent to socialism because the full time military basically is socialistic--food, housing, pay related to grade rather than productivity, etc.

But what is necessary for the military to function as a hierarchical organization is not suitable as a model for a free people. That is one of the reasons that people like Sam and John Adams were suspicious of a standing army. Navies on the other hand were fine because they posed much less threat to civilian government from a coup.

For chinesium sellers, yes. For others, selling via Ebay is becoming an alternative or walmart dot com.

I think Amazon will probably split sometime in the future between teh AWS cloud services and their retail properties. That is one of the factors that eventually leads all companies to become conglomerates is the search for high yield and when that high yield is no more in an area, then spin that part off.

Retail is a tough market with low profit margins and I am not sure that network effects can shield Amazon from that reality.

242 I'm amazed at people who don't mind an government interference with income tax of 20 - 40%, but a tariff of 10% bothers them.

-------------

I made a similar argument three years ago (the only time I called into a local talk radio show the past few decades).

Since '96, our small city has quadrupled in population but the irresponsible City Councils have been busy with luxuries like "buying MOAR open space" (despite the fact that we're surrounded on three sides by millions of acres of National Forest and BLM lands) instead of, you know, things like basic services (infrastructure, police & fire, et. al).

There hasn't been a new fire station built since '96 and there's quite a shortage of police as many cannot afford to live here -- so someone got a ballot measure to raise the sales tax by 1% to fund the building of some more fire stations and paying more to hire police.

My argument then in 2022 was simple against those opposing the measure: "Real inflation at this time is something like 20% and you're opposed to a 1% increase in sales tax -- much of which will be payed by tourists -- that will result in an actual benefit to the community?"

The measure passed ...

Lowering interest rates increases the availability to existing money.
Small and medium businesses, the biggest generators of employment, have easier access to more money allowing expansion. Builders too which lowers the cost of a house giving the first time home buyer a double positive; lower price and lower payments.
This senario works its way through all parts of the economy.

So, we finally get a CPI for November and it correlates perfectly with what we should have expected with the drop in gasoline prices.

The 4-month rolling avg. of the CPI has correlated directionally with the monthly closing price of gas futures since the run up to COVID. (see chart).

With RBOB Gasoline Futures trading @ $1.70 this morning. If that holds through year-end, we're looking at a Dec CPI (YoY) print of 2.3-2.4%. Coming into 2026 we can and should expect gas prices to further attenuate, the CPI to fall well below 2%, if not stall out completely, and wages to grow 3+% given the amount of investment happening.

Soon, copper and other tight supply commodities will be the driver of inflation, not gasoline, but we're not there yet.
