28 This is from 1946, so I suspect the car is pre-war. The auto companies began producing cars again after the war, but they were retreads of 1941-42 models. America had to wait a few years for truly new models. People who had cars before Pearl Harbor hung on to them.

I suppose some financially fortunate people could buy a new car in '46, though.

70 There are nice details to the car and the woman. Note the column shifter behind the red wheel, the red knobs on the window cranks, and the red necklace she's wearing. It is odd that there appear to be no window cranks on the driver's side; the one for the vent window should be visible at least. The car also has a divided, two-part windshield, something that car companies phased out in the early Fifties. And no external mirrors on the doors, either. Those were extra-cost options once upon a time, if they were available at all.

91 I was surprised this was by Edward Hopper. I expect sharper lines in his paintings This is more fluid and relaxed and seems spontaneous. (I learned it is a watercolor with colored pencils on paper which adds to the looser feel.) I like how the focus is on Jo and the car rather than the actual landscape or her drawing. It is a very human image. This is a nice, relaxed painting to end the week with.

The scene has a bit of nostalgia for me. The car remind me of an old Checker Marathon cab I used to drive. No power steering or brakes and standard transmission. It was a beast to handle in small, colonial era streets but it always ran. And I miss bench seats and vent windows.

Maybe the seats are covered in something. My dad's '58 Chevy Impala came with vinyl-trimmed cloth seats. He went out and had plastic seat covers put on at least the front seat. The plastic yellowed quickly and began to peel before very long -- and since the Impala had no A/C, the seats were damned hot when the car had been in the sun.

For a long time leather was a very rare option except on top-of-the-line convertibles. Pre-war cars usually had some kind of fuzzy cloth, sort of like velour, or cord material. Vinyl, I think, began to appear in the Fifties.

The BLS says we lost 41,000 jobs in 2 months.

But control for Federal layoffs and we gained 121,000.

Control for deportations and we gained 300,000.

The “Weak” job numbers are entirely made of Federal layoffs and millions of illegals going home.

Loved Checker cabs. I was in NYC Carpenter's Union and traveled job to job with a big rolling toolbox. No problem in a Checker. Trunk for any lesser cab.
Phyllis Diller owned several quirky cars, a 1965 Checker Marathon station wagon among them.

Various wool/mohair blends were considered (and in much of Asia, still are) more "lux" than pedestrian leather... the driver (sitting out front there in the rain/snow/whatever) suffered with leather seats.

Spread out among the entire US, one probably would not notice much. We are a really big place which is why anecdotes are so incomplete to get a good picture.

That being said, enrollments in public schools has dipped in major metro areas significantly during the last year to the extent one large city near me is discussing closing schools.

Housing costs fluctuate. In 2008 housing costs went waaaaay down. Was it also from self deportations?

Plus in 2024 there was a record number of apartments built nationwide. Around 575k units. And 2025 was close behind with 500k units. That’s what led to lower rents not imaginary millions of self deportations.

One of the accounts I follow on X is Shipwreckedcrew. Former federal prosecutor turned defense lawyer. Defended many J6 defendants for donations.

He said the judge hearing the case is very liberal but played the case straight. He expects a 1 year and 1 day prison sentence which I guess in the federal sentencing guidelines would make her eligible for good time and a reduction in time.

It's quite another thing to actually see accountability in one's lifetime for something like this. Especially when the entirety of the judicial system is clearly on the side of the criminals.

There will certainly be some shuffling of papers, some indictments drawn up and all the other theater we've come to expect. But I'm fairly certain nobody's going to prison over it. If anyone gets the blame it's going to some poor slob nobody's ever heard of and was likely only marginally involved and unable to find funding for a robust defense.

High School enrollment until this year was trending up a bit (decent economy during Bush years) but middle and elementary were dropping.

Simply put, we have to use indirect measures because the fed government (and states, etc.) do not know who we have in this country for decades now.

Many of those illegals worked in the shadow economy of floating cash paid jobs and the easiest sign of those departing should be rising costs for labor and construction depending on how slack the local jobs market are. ICE has not done very much yet in Workplace Enforcement and instead focused on criminals and terrorists first.

Complicating matters is the Reagan amnesty bill let employers off the hook if they took I-9 forms and the proffered ids at face value.

Urbanization drives lower birth rates because it raises the cost of having kids. And you get the stagnant economy for the middle of the income bell curve since the 1970's with declining real per capita income. Only Trump has managed some upturns much to the dismay of our investing class.

Looted by hedge funds types. Startup retailers (or restaurants for that matter) often cut deals with real estate investors to get started, then end up buying their own real estate if successful. WalMart, for example, to get started, often gave percentages of a store's gross sales but negotiated a lower fixed rent to the developers. As WalMart got bigger, then it let those old stores sit empty and built new ones that it owned. Eventually a lot were spun off to Hobby Lobby or other stores that did not compete with Wal Mart.

Sears was where Eddie Lampert looted it first by merging it with bankrupt K Mart, and then by spinning off the store real estate and charging rent back to the retail business. Has become a popular tactic claimed by hedge funds to 'unlock' hidden value but it ends up bankrupting the retail companies (and restaurant chains that used that tactic to get big).

The fact is that Governor Kemp and AG Carr knew about this from teh get go and have refused to do a damn thing about nor about the fake electors case bullshit from Fulton County. They haven't done a damn thing and even the GA House and GA Senate, both controlled by GOP have done little enough. GA appellate courts have also been profiles in cowardice--not killing the fake cases outright years ago and not ordering Fulton to turn over those ballots for public perusal in 2021 when the suit began for access.

GA Sos Ratshitburger is another cog in the wheel by he and his employees lying at every moment to protect fraud in Fulton (and probably Savannah, Macon, and other blue areas) including the Senate runoff in 2021. They can all rot in hell for what they did.

Saw this article that says that all the studies they did on alcohol killing the liver did not isolate for other things.

Saturated fats show signs of actually healing an alcoholic rat's liver.

The combination of alcohol and seed oils is what really desiccates the liver. Much less sign of liver damage to alcoholic mice that consumed only saturated fats.
