The Classical Saturday Coffee Break & Prayer Revival

SilentScream.jpg

[H/T Thomas Paine, as in give me caffeine or give me death fame.]

Good morning boys and girls and everything in between. Before we enter the Prayer Revival just a few housekeeping matters to go over. (Rulz for those of you in Medford)

1) This is an open thread. Feel free to lurk, opine and/or bloviate.
2) Be kind, be nice. See if you are on somebody's list.
3) No. You may not run with sharp objects until the Food Thread comes around tomorrow.
4) Have a wonderful weekend.

AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List

Please submit any prayer requests to me, “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo at-sign hotmail dot com. Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks unless we receive an update.

Prayer Requests:

11/6 - D sent an update on his wife Susan, and her battle with cancer. He sent his thanks to everyone for the prayers. They are helping and much appreciated. Susan had an infection which is being treated, but her sodium levels are bad again. She will be sent home soon, but is on restrictive fluids until this is cleared up. The good news is that she has gained some weight back and her voice is much stronger now. Thank you, and please keep up the prayers. They appreciate everyone!
11/20 Update – Susan is out of the hospital, after 2 weeks. For the first time in months, she doesn’t have any drainage tubes. Chemo is on hold for the next 2 weeks, to give her time to rest, recover, and gain some weight back. Thank you, everyone, for your prayers – please continue them!

11/15 – Smell the Glove asked for prayers for an 81 year-old aunt who has colon cancer. She is stopping chemo, since it’s not working and it’s tiring her out. Doctors will determine if any other treatment is proper.
11/29 Update – Thank you all for the prayers. The good Lord had another plan and the aunt passed away. She had taught at a Catholic school for over 20 years, raised 3 daughters and had 8 grandchildren. She also babysat Smell the Glove the first couple of years of life.

11/15 – Sponge posted an update on the “First lady”. She is doing OK from the surgery pain-wise, however it appears her compromised immune system from chemo is susceptible to viruses. She has been spiking a fever all weekend.

11/20 - Bluebell sent an update on grammie winger - good news! At her appointment, the doctor said her bloodwork is nearly perfect and her cancer cell count is dropping. She is in minimal pain. The chemo is working, thanks be to God! She will go back in 3 weeks for another round of chemo and then they will do a CT scan to see if she can have surgery to clean out the rest of the tumors. She is convinced – CONVINCED – that this is due in no small part to the treasured prayers of friends and family! They gave her weeks, and now she is looking at possible remission.

11/22 – Duke Lowell posted an update. He said that he is gradually starting to feel normal again, two months after his surgery. The main problem is that the effects of anesthesia are still suppressing his appetite.

11/22 – Commissar Hrothgar posted prayers for President Trump, to keep him safe from harm and may the many forces of evil arrayed against him and our country be made ineffective and come to naught.

11/22 – Oddbob requested prayers. He found out that his job is going away the end of December. They are a one-income family. He also requested prayers for another co-worker, who is in the same situation.

11/22 – Cosda sent an update on his wife’s condition. She started a year of immunotherapy in June for cancer. She is doing well with her treatments every three weeks, but her follow up dermatology scan found another mole with melanoma and 2 other abnormal and suspicious spots. She will be having more tissue removed from those areas for lab tests. Prayers are appreciated.

11/22 – The Walking Dude sent an update. We prayed for his mom in August, when she fell and broke her hip. She is 90 years old. She is still in the hospital but has been transferred to a better rehab run by the Masons. They are unsure if she will ever get out. Please pray for her recovery and return home.

11/24 – Bulg requested prayers for a neighbor who has cancer, and also prayers for his son and two of his friends, who are moving into a rental house in Arlington, VA on 11/28. Prayers for the 3 of them, that they may live together contentedly, and prayers for Bulg and his wife as they adjust to their son’s absence.
11/26 Update – The neighbor passed away on 11/24. Prayers are needed for the neighbor’s husband, Steve, as he grieves. They had no children.

11/29 – From about That Time asked for prayers after a lymphoma diagnosis. From about That Time has already begun chemo, and the kids and granddaughter had fun cutting off a ponytail and shaving hair in preparation.

12/1 – P received news that her 24 year old daughter has changed her name to a male name and had “top surgery”. P needs wisdom as to how to speak to her, and also how to speak with P’s other children, in a loving but honest way. Also, that God will use this to turn all their hearts back to Him.

12/3 – Teresa in Fort Worth posted an update. She had an MRI on 12/3, and will meet with the oncologist on 12/4, the surgeon on 12/8, and the surgery on 12/11. This is a good thing, because it looks like more tumors are starting to crop up in her liver. It doesn’t appear to have spread beyond there yet, thank goodness.
12/8 Update – The surgery is still planned for 12/11. Teresa will be in the hospital for 5-7 days. With doctor’s approval, they plan to travel to see family on 12/20. Thanks to everyone for their prayers!
12/11 Update – Today’s surgery to remove part of her liver is scheduled to begin at 2:30 pm (Central) and take about 3 hours. The surgeon will also be using heat ablation on the remnants of the other small tumors.

12/4 – E asked for prayers as she will be having surgery in two weeks. She is nervous, but everyone she has spoken with has nothing but good things to say about the surgeon, and she is looking forward to being on the other side of it. Please pray that all will go according to God’s will and that His name will be glorified.

12/6 – M requested prayers for Ron and Sherri. Ron has late stage Parkinson’s/dementia, and he recently fell and shattered his hip. He also requested prayers for Al, who fell through a railing and then down 12 feet, and broke seven ribs. He also punctured his lung. He is home now, recovering.

12/6 – Comrade Flounder asked for prayers for his FIL, who went to the hospital for AFIB, congestive heart, and received two stents. FIL is home now, still short of breath, and has a long road ahead. He is a kind-hearted man and a loving father. Comrade Flounder’s wife lost her mother a few years back to brain cancer, so having this go on is even more difficult during the holidays.

12/6 – neverenoughcaffeine asked for prayers for Tim, an acquaintance through church. He has prostate cancer and begins 28 days straight of radiation.

12/6 – pawn asked for prayes for a dear friend named Julia, who was told by her doctors that she has very little time to live. Julia has an incredible mind and drive. She was a Naval officer, a college professor, a competitive sailor, and a mother. She went to the hospital with pneumonia a couple of weeks ago and left with a terminal illness diagnosis. Please pray to God to give her the strength she needs in these last few days, and the peace that comes from acceptance.

For submission guidelines and other relevant info, please contact Annie's Stew, who is managing the prayer list. You can contact her at apaslo at-sign hotmail dot com. If you see a prayer request posted in a thread comment, feel free to copy and paste it and e-mail it to Annie's Stew. She tries to keep up with the requests in the threads, but she's not here all of the time, so she may not see it unless you e-mail it to her. Please note: Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks or so unless we receive an update.

You're wonderful and I appreciate your efforts. She feels ALL of your prayers and we are eternally grateful for your generosity. We are truly humbled.

She's doing well. She's still on restrictions after her surgery last month, but things are progressing nicely. As for the cancer, the last mammogram showed clean and a meet with the surgeon this week said she likely needs to change her bra type to assist in the healing of skin around the radiation irritation.

Other than that, everything is going very well.

We are grateful to all who have been praying for her. She feels the love and support every day.

I'm 6 weeks past cancer treatment with my hair and beard back. Prognosis looking good here as well. Believe in prayer. Believe in miracles, they exist even in this broken world.

2) Cancer - you hit like a witch.

You can do this. You are stronger than you know.

I do too, it shows a different side of that person's nature. I think is demonstrates the fallacy of discounting the spiritual.

If humans are merely "meat robots" and such a thing as the soul does not exist, why do we see such disparate reactions to the same stimuli?

Good morning again everyone. Today is winterize the sprinkler system day. Should be fun.
1) open the drain valve
2) close the supply valve
3) let the controller run each zone to allow everything to drain to the lowest zone where the the drain valve is
4) close the drain valve

Every so happy I learned how to service the system as a twenty something augmenting my Army pretend pay by installing them when we lived in El Paso. Rent a ditchwith on a Saturday morning for 24 hours. Rental company is closed on Sunday, so got it for 48 hours. Dig out three or four yards. Install three or four systems during the week after work.

Help us to be healthy and safe so that we may enjoy these blessings for many years to come. Help us to be considered and wise in our decisions. In our beloved Savior name, amen.

Day 1 of the AKC National Championship in Orlando and The Big Dummy is getting shown today.

Unfortunately, we have had an unpleasant dispute with our regular handler this week and we're parting ways. Dummy's co-owner was sitting at ringside during the Hound Group on Wednesday and overheard him saying to someone outside the ring that TBD was OK but was never going to be Number 1. That's not the sort of thing you want to hear from someone who should be promoting your dog.

That's kind of the culmination of other grievances Her Majesty has had. Neither he nor his crew are very friendly. As in, won't even say good morning to you. And they regard any kind of suggestion about how to present TBD with distain.

I know that shows can be hectic and I know that some clients can be a pain in the ass, but we've always brought him good dogs, impeccably groomed, and we pay for services rendered at the end of the show. So I, for one, don't see a reason why we should put up with that.

Professional handlers can be asshoe.

I benched a professional handler at a show in Indianapolis for waving bait in front on my dog's face during a tight, line-abreast group stack that the judge called for.

By her reaction, you'd have thought I had accused her of murder. She denied the waving of the bait thing, but unfortunately for her, I had video of it on my phone.

101 Time for a little praise and joy.

I didn't mention this at the time because frankly I was tired of thinking, talking and dealing with it. When something bad is going on, and you tell everyone, yes, you get some sympathy and prayers, but then people will ask how it is going, which forces you to think about it when you'd rather just move on to happier topics.

This is what happened when CPS was tormenting us. I only told a few people and never mentioned it here until long after it was over. I notified my Guard unit's security manager because I had to, but emphasized that it was absolutely confidential because I liked coming to drill and talking about other stuff. This request was honored.

Anyway, I've been dealing with elevated blood pressure for a year, and then in September learned that I had Type II diabetes and my blood sugar levels were really bad. My doctor at the time was a condescending pill-pusher so I fired him and got a new one who was made to understand that I call the shots, which she agreed. I had hitherto been in excellent overall health, rarely getting sick and I only got a primary doctor because I was over 29 and my wife insisted. (cont)

108 (cont) I had never had high BP before, was a regular blood donor (before Covid masking drove me away) and so the discovery of the diabeetus made sense. My theory was that upon retirement, I decided to eat whatever I wanted for the first time in decades - pop with sugar, ice cream every night, etc. What I did not realize was that while I did not have diabetes to the extent of my father or grandfather, I was still sensitive, and had augured myself in good.

I therefore went through everything I ate, cut out all the sugar I could identify, slashed carbs and did the apple cider vinegar thing while kicking up my exercise.

Just as importantly, I received the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Because my BP was scary high, I accepted a low dose of meds, and that worked. But I wanted to first see what would happen if I just cut off the sugar.

This week I met with the doctor, went over the labs and the results were spectacular. Cut the A1C by almost 50 percent to controlled levels in 90s days. Doc was impressed. The temptation is to attribute this to my efforts, but we all know that God has the final say. God be praised!

147 131 Just a reminder: the left is now wholly controlled by demons.”

There’s a good example of that in Texas, in the entertaining race for the dem nomination to run for Senator, which has now attracted national attention. No, not Jasmine Crockett, although I find that part quite amusing because I’ve been telling people for months that she was going to be the Dem nominee, and until this week all the “smart people” said that idea was crazy.

But Texas dems have decided to make it a contest between the two most absolutely loathsome candidates they could find. Her opponent, the sad white twink Talerico, who pretends to be some kind of minister, decided to bolster his cred with Democrats by saying that it would have been OK if Mary would have aborted Jesus.
I know that sounds to monstrously ridiculous for anyone to even think - but that’s true “progressive “ dogma right now.

"I'm awake, but they just gave me a Tylenol and an oxycodone, so I may not be conscious too much longer 🤣🤣🤣 Will be seeing the surgical resident first, then Dr. Yopp will be by to see me around 8 or 9.

Apparently my liver is still intact, but I will be going home with an HAI pump. I will have to come up with a fun name for him - maybe call him "Fred". The medicine they will be putting in the pump is called FUDR - you KNOW we are going to be having fun with that acronym....

And now we get to start playing whack-a-mole with all of these pesky little tumors that didn't show up on the CT Scan or the MRI (we were told that it is not uncommon to find that once they go in).

The good news is that the pump is even MORE targeted than anything I have had before, and they can use much more medication without the worry of killing "healthy" tissue in the process.

I think the oxycodone may be kicking in now - see you guys on the other side...

I think very few people bother to actually read Milton's Paradise Lost, but much of it has been internalized by our society in terms of making the devil a sympathetic character whose lieutenants still have some virtues.

Tolkien had a much clearer grasp of the totality of evil, and how it gradually corrupts one completely, to the point where good intentions cannot even be imagined.

That horse has already left the barn.

Evangelicalism, in the past fifty years has done nothing but syncretize with the worst of pop culture.

Everything from changing a few words in secular music and rolling that through the so-called "Praise & Worship Team", to the "Come As You Are" (stay as you came) "Seeker Sensitive" pop psychology as a substitute for sanctification foolishness.

Do a honest comparison of the ancient faiths (e.g. Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodox) which heavily relies on spirituality vs the highly materialistic American Religion (Free Will Dispensationalism) and you will witness how far Christianity has collapsed due to secularization.

Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. (Romans 6:1-4)

193 Prominent Guardian columnist, George Monbiot has come out with the ultimate statement of Leftist European attitudes towards mass immigration:

The facts are stark: Europe must open the door to migrants, or face its own extinction

https://tinyurl.com/5n8e8skp

Europe is facing demographic collapse due to low birth rates, you see, so Europe needs mass immigration, and it's racist to question where those immigrants are coming from.

After all, British roast beef originally comes from the Middle East, and everything in European civilization comes from somewhere else, so there is no reason to object to turning much of England into a province of Pakistan.

Weirdly, Monbiot is Jewish, but importing millions of people who want to kill him apparently isn't a problem.

I disagree. There was an effort to bend the popular culture in a Christian direction and it was somewhat successful, but it was undermined by Evangelical leaders who started pushing people to withdraw from "the world" and stop contesting the popular culture.

Rod Dreher's "The Benedict Option" is the Catholic/Orthodox version of this: quit the battle, go hide, hope things turn around later.

And evil responded with a massive offensive on every front. It has been beaten back but is still seething and quite powerful. I'm pleased to see more young people flocking to Christ and more orthodox Christians taking firm stands. "Nice" Christianity is dead.

And we've also identified those who betrayed their flocks with bad advice, whether intentionally or not.

You have inspired me within the past few months to more deeply explore the ancient faiths (RC and EO in particular). Along that path one can't help but look at these State Religions and see that core to their implementation and success that they must reject or minimalize Election and more from the individual to The Church, such where a Mafioso can kill a competitor while on his way to Mass and there be no conflict.

Get Baptized into the Church, leverage Means of Grace to an ultimate destination of Theosis. This is all pretty spiritual and treats sin and grace as individual barter transactions - do some sins, confess for forgiveness, do some penance, do some Purgatory, wash rinse repeat.

Faith + Works.

The Reformed view is much more different in that Sin can only be canceled by Grace through Faith.

Evangelicals, OTOH, view Sin as a Mistake, a goof, accident - IOW, they have traded in Absolute Truth for Relative Truth.

I think much of the drama swirling around TPUSA has been a well organized and well financed attempt by demonic forces to stage a takeover of the movement after the murder if one of thei greatest enemies, Charlie Kirk.

But as an example of how some good can still result from evil - a whole lot of false prophets have dropped their masks and exposed themselves.

212 I disagree. There was an effort to bend the popular culture in a Christian direction and it was somewhat successful, but it was undermined by Evangelical leaders who started pushing people to withdraw from "the world" and stop contesting the popular culture.

That example is such a tiny slice of Evangelicalism, it may not even be Evangelicalism.

Lets be clear, while the definition of Evangelicalism is rather amorphous and not homogenous, its core characteristic is Prescient Election (which in itself is heresy). To get there, you need a certain God Is My Co-Pilot sentiment.

Take a look at pretty much any commentary on Galatians 5:22 (Fruit of the Spirit) Evangelicals have Orwelled each and every term into its secular equivalent and have totally abandoned any of the spiritual meaning (which is ironic as it is a spiritual gift).

For example, their definition of "Joy" is indistinguishable from Euphoria. "Patience" is the ability to deal with jerk drivers or someone who is dawdling. Broadly speaking its vibes that can be regulated through psychotropic pharmaceuticals.

I'm not sure I completely agree with that assessment.

Evangelism has a a fundamental flaw in its assessment of success. It may perhaps be akin to the western mindset that growth is numerical in nature. And while this can be true, it can also be misleading. We are called to go into the world and make disciples, not converts.

So a church that brings 1 parishioner into an ardent walk with Christ has more successfully Evangelized than 100 mega churches that have 1 million members, of which none live out their faith.

The big tent model of the western evangelical church focused more on boutique ecclesiology which reached out to non-Christian lifestyles, often sacrificing the truth in its quest for numbers (and I'm sure in some instances, land holdings and income).

It would be difficult to look at crusades like the Billy Graham ministry and say it had "withdrawn from the world".....

Sounds like you're somewhat close to the Western Kentucky Parkway. I think Elizabethtown west? Been over 40 years.
One of the prettiest drives I've ever taken. Early April. On the way to Kentucky Lake. There had been an early morning rain but mid-morning and the sun had come out. The redbuds and dogwoods were blooming on the hillsides.
---------
We have property and a home in WV and take the Martha Lane Pkwy east to get there. It's a beautiful drive in the spring. Sometimes in the fall too. Absolutely sucks during winter tho'.

And, yea... we're not far from E-town. Hate that place.

217 Along that path one can't help but look at these State Religions and see that core to their implementation and success that they must reject or minimalize Election and more from the individual to The Church, such where a Mafioso can kill a competitor while on his way to Mass and there be no conflict.

This is abjectly false. It is true that people pervert teachings to make a false peace with their sins, but there is nothing unique to any particular faith in that respect.

Nor is the use of the Sacraments a wash/rinse/repeat cycle, but instead an iterative path to salvation, inching along by recognizing and removing sin from one's life.

Repeatedly sinning obviates the grace of Reconciliation. Where it works is that you are forced to recognize that you are not using your free will when you sin, but becoming a slave to it, confessing the same things over and over again. Finally, you break the chain, and there is great joy in being free of that compulsion.

There is a 'corporate' aspect to faith because we are not atomized individuals but part of a larger community and our sins affect that community.

219 ....Instead what it appears to have done is to make "Christian" into a brand rather than a life.

The natural entailment then is to merge popular culture into ever-increasing bastardization of the church. And so we get Christian rap, lesbian pastors, pro-choice congregations and the like.

The evangelical church is often a million members wide, but only an inch of faith deep.

Having participated in many a discussion of "outreach programs" in church board meetings, rarely is it suggested that we "live more piously", but rather most suggestions are hinged on ideas that seem to be more modern or more entertaining.

I'd argue that rather than withdraw itself from society, the western evangelical church movement has sought to adopt and insert itself into society, but not in ways which confirm the church, but rather weaken its principles.

221 Being "Personally saved" does nothing for your neighbor, whereas acts of charity and mercy are visible signs of God's love for all to see. The greatest miracle is not healing, or even rising from the dead, but converting another to the faith.

The Church has a richness and depth and knowledge that even now, 19 years after my conversion, I am still struck by the repository of wisdom She contains.

I am also humbled by the examples of John Henry Newman, G.K. Chesterton, Evelyn Waugh and countless others who - often against their will - were drawn to the Church.

I was one of them. A Catholic-insulting jackass, raised to hold the Church in contempt and the last thing anyone ever expected was what actually happened. The people who knew me thought I was faking, or playing a prank or working an angle. Even my grandparents wondered what the "real" story was. Well, except for my mother's mother, who was Catholic, patiently taught me prayers, enforced the requirement on her wayward children and grandchildren that Christmas Mass was mandatory. She knew it would happen and had a very knowing smile when I told her.

226 I'd argue that rather than withdraw itself from society, the western evangelical church movement has sought to adopt and insert itself into society, but not in ways which confirm the church, but rather weaken its principles.

This gets a little weird, but I'm OK with that. As a confirmed believer in the Doctrines of Grace, unlike Finney, no one can manipulate someone's emotions into "Accepting Jesus" - that work is purely by the Paraclete.

So as for the false piety in the American Religion (aka Evangelicalism) I'm OK with that because the LORD will call out his own, and other than many Evangelicals actively hostile at "Calvinists", they are particularly ignorant of Scripture but accepting of the concept of Jesus (even though they engage in the blasphemous What Would Jesus Do vanity virtue theater).

In other words they eschew sound doctrine under the premise of "A Child Like Faith" as being an endorsement of almost total ignorance of doctrines and creeds.

I'm OK with it, because unlike the Left, they aren't trying to kill me and they pretend to be nice and "Christ like" which is a plus for civility and a high trust society.

This is absolute Gold and is what is missing in our post-modern materialistic world view. What I am greatly appreciating in the ancient faiths is the orientation towards Theosis rather than obtaining the Get Out Of Hell card.

I have a better understanding now of praying to departed Saints and how that is even possible, and the core of that is the assuming, not the essence, but the energy of God which would include Love, which too has been bastardized by Western ethics.

I'm developing on this topic as I exorcise more of the materialistic programming that has been a part of my Church history and tradition.

237 Nor is the use of the Sacraments a wash/rinse/repeat cycle, but instead an iterative path to salvation, inching along by recognizing and removing sin from one's life.

Try to come from the perspective of Election, which is very individualistic - the Book of Life is not a hotel registry where you can walk up and write your name. Abram didn't approach God on his own volition and demand to have the Adamic covenant go through him and his seed.

But a State Religion can not survive in an Election soteriology, so it comes up with an alternative soteriology. You happen to agree with the State Religion version and there is a lot of wisdom in that view particularly in the areas where it intersects with Election.

What I am sensing is that the Reformed faith has departed too far from what you are saying so that there is less and less doctrinal overlap and commonality.

Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at December 13, 2025 11:17 AM (a4flb)

238 I have been rereading Jonathan Edwards where he doesn't have the ancient faith vocabulary, but is pretty close to describing in alternate terms much of the Theosis that is core to ancient faiths.

The canvas I am working on takes First Century church doctrines, sees the implementation at scale through ancient faiths, sees what happened up to the Great Schism then watch as East and West refine and syncretize the doctrines to fit in with the Greater Culture.

The nailing of the 95 Thesis to the Wittenburg door was not THE inflection point, for reformation of Rome was going on years before this event. It was inevitable. So I am trying to winnow out the chaff and restore that which has been lost independent of modern and post modern influences and traditions.

You read Jonathan Edward's? That's great. The only people on here who know of Jonathan Edwards at least from what they have said only know "Sinners in the Hand of Angry God" which they read in high school or college as the example of a terrible Puritan. Since he was the most prolific religious writer of his time period, it's probably not to judge him just on that. He is one of those historical figures whom I have crush on.

DeWine also imported thousands of Haitians and dumped them on the hard-luck city of Springfield: somewhere around 20,000 dumped on a city of 60,000.

No way that's going to distort housing and social costs, and cost Americans jobs. /s

The Haitians promptly ate the ducks at the public parks; residents were complaining that household pets were also eaten. There were at least two deaths (a child on a school bus, and an old lady taking a trash can to the curb) due Haitians driving like maniacs.

DeWine is one of those Christians that seems to have more compassion for the poor if they were born in a foreign country, rather than born in the U.S.
