Foxes are beautiful animals that you may be surprised to see in your garden. But like many wildlife species, they’ve learned to live near us. "Foxes are more commonly observed now," Robert Pierce, PhD, associate professor and state extension fisheries and wildlife specialist at the University of Missouri. "You’ll see them in urban and suburban areas because they’ve adapted to the conditions." Most of the time, foxes are naturally shy and hide from us. "Generally, we don’t have negative interactions with them," says Sheldon Owen, PhD, wildlife extension specialist at West Virginia University. "They prefer to stay out of sight and are primarily nocturnal, although you will also see them during the day, especially if they’re hunting for their pups." The greatest risk to people and pets with foxes is that they can carry canine distemper, fleas, ticks, and the mites that can cause mange, says Owen. Like all mammals, foxes also can carry rabies, but it’s a small number, as compared to other wildlife species such as bats, raccoons and skunks. Typically, foxes are not a serious issue for homeowners. "Most often we get calls from people saying they have a fox family in their back yard," says Pierce. "We advise to give them their space and observe and enjoy the experience."More at the link. And this is interesting: Last week, we learned that By-Tor had raccoons at his house again. They may be more of a problem sometimes. — Why you should have a Raccoon (@ShouldHaveRacc) December 13, 2025 Or maybe not . . . . . That dog at the TXMOME got a special treat from me, though not on purpose.
I had set a plate with a hamburger on it on the side tray of my lawn chair. Unfortunately, the plate wasn't very stable and fell off when I wasn't looking. Or it was helped. Not sure. In any case, the dog was kind enough to clean up my mess. Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at December 13, 2025 03:53 PM (ESVrU) 4

I'd love to see a fox in my yard. If I had one. We've had opossums here, and I know I've glimpsed a coyote or two in the predawn hours when I work out.
I did see foxes often in the Denver area, including ones dashing around the animal enclosures at he zoo. The staffers told me they no longer even tried to keep the foxes out; they slipped under the fences or slid between the rails. One morning in Red Rocks Park, I saw one coppery, bushy-tailed fellow on the opposite side of the road where I'd parked. He seemed totally unfazed by the presence of me or my car. I sat and watched him look around until he trotted away from the trail, intent on his own foxy pursuits. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at December 13, 2025 03:57 PM (wzUl9) 7
You met Sakura last week, the stray calico weegie. Lately, she has become more affectionate and more willing to spend time indoors with me. Still freaks out at the presence of other people. She has also been joined by a smol black cat I am calling "Babymonster." Who despite being hungry and frightened is also a lot more willing to get close and even be petted than most stray khets. Sakura has become territorial about our backyard, but she lets Babymonster in.

Both of my furry thugs, Stirling the big black medium-hair and little gray Dagny the fluffy fireplug of a Siberian, were sleeping with me when I woke from my nap. The day is warm but not hot; I have the door open, and they are now intently watching things of interest to them through the screen door.

Pretty sure I had a family of red foxes denned up under an old truck body in the bottom corner of my lot a few years ago. Have not seen any lately. No animal tracks at all in last night's snowfall, which I just came in from clearing with the snowblower. Must be too cold. Usually plenty of bunny tracks, and deer sometimes.

Rancher Bob and Cow Horse Queen's handsome fellow is a heterochrome (if I'm using the term right) -- one eye blue and the other brown?
When Miss Linda gets a look at the Christmas outfits on S. Lynn's girls, she's gonna want to devise something like it for my cats. She keeps saying, "They don't mind costumes." To which I reply, "How do you know?" She insists on putting a Santa suit on them every year and taking pictures. At that it's better than the princess cone-cap and cape she used to dress the late Marie-Antoinette in. True, Marie did not seem to mind; it meant more attention from her human servants, and that she loved. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at December 13, 2025 04:08 PM (wzUl9) 16

My big tom caught a mouse and "played it to death" night before last, just before I let him in for the night. He got a treat for being a mighty hunter, but I let the mouse on the porch.
The next morning I threw it over the fence for the neighbor's chickens, and a while later I saw the youngest kitten batting it around and mock-hunting it. When she saw me watching she picked it up and trotted over to show me. She got a treat too, and the sadly mangled mouse went in the compost heap, hopefully for good. There was an item on a thread last week about the suggestion that raccoons are becoming more domesticated. I find this hard to believe. They are smart creatures, but still wild animals. It may take a long while before they are domesticated, if ever.
Maybe they are becoming "domestic-lite," as in perfectly happy to live in proximity to humans for the food and even the entertainment value. The way cats began to take up with us. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at December 13, 2025 04:16 PM (wzUl9) 21
Oboy. Didn't nap through the pet thread today.
We're fortunate that neither the cat, nor the dog, nor the four "cousin" dogs visiting yesterday, care about the tree inside the house. Daisy, our dear, sweet and sensitive Malinois, did not care for this brief, creative version of Jingle Bells. Made her whine and cry, so I stopped it before the end. https://youtu.be/fG90ZlnloAE Posted by: mindful webworker - squeaky squeaky at December 13, 2025 04:20 PM (lbDMw) 22
So about foxes,....
A couple years ago, had a HUGE mole/vole problem. Backyard looked like varicose veins. Noticed that a pair of foxes (assuming M/F pair) started showing up in the backyard in the EARLY morning (I generally wake up around 4:30 and grab some coffee). Within 4-6 months NO MORE MOLES/VOLES!!!! Ya think the two might be somehow linked????? -SLV Posted by: Shy Lurking Voter at December 13, 2025 04:21 PM (e/Osv) 23

Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at December 13, 2025 04:22 PM (ESVrU) I think "acclimated" to humans is the key here. I live in the suburbs next to a reservoir, so we get ALL sorts of critters in the neighborhood. This time of year, it's 6-10 deer in the yard eating acorns and crabapples. I go outside to warm the truck, and they may glance at me, but they don't run. I swear I have been within 15 feet of a couple. Hmm, is this where I start considering "alternate" hunting methods??? -SLV Posted by: Shy Lurking Voter at December 13, 2025 04:28 PM (e/Osv) 27

Posted by: Shy Lurking Voter We hardly ever saw deer all summer and early fall. Funny thing, as soon as hunting season starts, we get many of them here in the living area. Its pretty easy. We're not trapping or shooting 'coons, or deer, or turkey anymore. Let the grocery store shut down a couple weeks. Then you'll hear some bangs. And then all those cute critters won't come 'round anymore. They won't be extinct ... as a species. And you'll see some skinny, miserable people. And some people that don't look at the end of starvation. The End. Posted by: Howdy at December 13, 2025 04:34 PM (ivXYS) 30

Posted by: exdem13 at December 13, 2025 *** Last January we had a historic (for here) snowfall. Linda got the idea to see how little Dagny the Siberian would react to conditions in her "homeland." She toted Dagny out -- and the little cat, normally silent, let out a yowl you could have heard across the street. We brought her in quick. Last month she tried exposing Dagny to warmer and calmer conditions. Dagny did not complain at all. So it was the cold or the snow hitting her fur that bothered her before, not the vista of the scary wide open outdoors. A few years ago--before we adopted our dog, Luna--we had two baby foxes hang out in our yard. In central Texas, these are gray foxes. One of the fairly unique qualities of our foxes is that they are great tree climbers. The two babies in our yard frequented a hollow in one of our native live oaks. They'd crawl down and play and explore in our side yard.
We christened the female "Adventure Fox" and her brother "Cautious Fox" based on their behavior. Mom fox came by to tend them frequently. We had a very entertaining spring watching them grow up but have only occasionally seen foxes in our yard since then. Posted by: Art Rondelet of Malmsey at December 13, 2025 05:03 PM (FEVMW) 49

The day I moved into this house some friends came over with a bottle of champagne to celebrate. We were out on the patio having some bubbly and a fox came out of the conversation land, stopped in the yard and just watched us. He stood there for about 30 seconds and then turned and trotted through the yard. Cheeky little bugger. Posted by: JackStraw at December 13, 2025 05:09 PM (viF8m) 50
Today's Update:
I am up and about (I have always recovered fairly quickly from most surgeries that I have had), and I am giving the nursing staff kittens because I am an old lady with an old lady's bladder, and when I need to go, I NEED TO GO!!!!! I have asked them to turn off the floor alarm....(they are threatening to assign me a full-time "handler" if I don't comply with the floor alarm, because I am a "fall risk"🤣🤣🤣 It looks like the largest tumor is, for all intents and purposes, dead. However, the smaller tumors are still there, and it looks like at least 1 more has cropped up. Some lymph nodes were sent off to be biopsied to see if the cancer has spread beyond the liver, and tissue from a couple of the smaller tumors was also sent off to see if those cancer cells have mutated (a common occurrence). Once the surgeon got into the abdominal area, it was obvious to him that there was more tumor involvement than either the CT scans or the MRIs had shown (also a common occurrence), so he made the decision - which we had talked about in advance - to leave the liver intact and install an HAI pump inside of the liver instead. (Continued....) Posted by: Teresa in Fort Worth, AoSHQ's Plucky Wee One - Eat the Cheesecake, Buy the Yarn. at December 13, 2025 05:10 PM (fV+di) 51
.....They will be running a “pump test” on Monday – while I am still in the hospital – to make sure that the pump is adequately delivering medication into my liver. If it is, the doctor thinks that I should be able to be discharged on Monday.
I don’t know when they plan on starting the chemo through the pump, but it appears that I will not have to “sit through” weekly chemo sessions, as the medication is sort of time-released through the HAI pump – a couple of weeks of focused chemo, followed by a week or two off. I will also be able to continue oral chemo in addition to the concentrated internal chemo which will be given through the pump. Once we know more about potential mutations in the cancer cells, a decision will be made about what type of chemo I will need to be on going forward. I don’t know what the side effects of the new chemo in the pump will be, nor do I know if they will be starting a different oral chemo – it’s going to depend on if they find a new mutation in the tumor tissues. If the combination of both of these treatments results in tumor shrinkage, the hope is to get me to a liver resection at some point in the near future. (Continued....) Last but not least, in July we have tickets to see “Hamilton” at Bass Hall in Fort Worth. We will be going with a large-ish group of friends to see that, preceded by dinner at The Cheesescake Factory (which is right across the street from Bass Hall). (Continued....)
