Symphony in White, No. 3 is a painting by James McNeill Whistler, created between 1865 and 1867. It features two women: one seated on a white sofa, dressed in white, and the other on the floor in a yellowish dress. The seated figure is Joanna Heffernan, Whistler's mistress and frequent model.

74 48 >>>Looks more Eggshell or Ecru than white.

Had an art class once where we had to do a still life as an assignment. I came home from class, went to work, ate dinner at 11:00pm, and thought, "Oh shit... that stupid drawing." Figured I'd do something simple and get to bed asap because I was exhausted.

So I put two white eggs on a white plate. Felt a it like cheating. So I cracked an egg on the plate as well. Still thought, "Meh. Some grays, a little yellow... I'll be snoozing by midnight." Went to bed at 4am after agonizing over the Prestone-green that came from the egg white reflecting the yolk. And the little amniotic sac on the inside of the cracked egg was the most frustrating shade of periwinkle.

I was exhausted at class the next day but learned a good lesson in really seeing your subject for what's there. And something something procrastination.

104 I've seen this painting before. It's done with Whistler's usual talent and style, especially the way he can subtly blend similar colors. I thought there was a message behind the image. The girls are in white and on a white sofa, things that are easily soiled. No room for fun or activity, just quiet and boring lounging. The younger girl on the right has dropped her viewer and is falling asleep. The older girl, more mature in her posture and with the shape of her legs showing through the material, looks like she wants some action, some romance. Her gaze is distant. She wants to be elsewhere, doing what young women desire.

I might be reading too much into the image but it's fun coming up with the scenario.

110 ON another version of Alpert's "Acapulco 1922" on YooToob, the description has it that the song "was written by Eldon Allan, who was actually Herb's older brother Dave Alpert, who also wrote the 1967 Tijuana Brass song 'Wade In The Water.' "

I understood WitW was a traditional spiritual; on a visit to Linda's Catholic church, I happened to spot the title in the songbook (forgive me if I don't have the correct name for the volume). Isn't it? Herb and/or Dave may have adapted it or arranged it, but they didn't write it, did they?

152 Posted by: Its Go Time Donald at December 08, 2025 10:12 AM (SQJLY)

that's painting the immigrant experience with a really broad brush

Loss or retention of native language accent is usually a function of what age the immigrant arrived here.
If it was pre- 15 or 16 years old, there is a good chance the accent will disappear.
There are other factors, such as their engagement in the larger society.
My grandparents kept their strong accents until their death, as did my mother. And mom got here at age 19.
Presence or absence of a foreign accent doesn't really correlate with whether or not a person has fully assimilated.

My dad's accent left fairly quickly, he arrived at age 18. I think because he was drafted and then when discharged from Army went into business for himself, he was more exposed to hearing how Americans talk and his ear acclimated to it more than other members of my fam.

264 Symphony in White, No. 3
James Abbott McNeill Whistler

Symphony in White, No. 1, 1862, also known as The White Girl, is a painting by James McNeill Whistler displayed at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.

Symphony in White, No. 2, 1864, also known as The Little White Girl is a painting by James McNeill Whistler & is part of the Tate (UK) collection, but not on permanent display.

Symphony in White, No. 3, 1865–1867, painted by James McNeill Whistler, is displayed at the Barber Institute of Fine Arts (UK).

His "muse" was Joanna Hiffernan and she often appeared in his paintings. The white dresses were a break from Victorian dress and mood.

Interesting art lesson; would pass on hanging unless the entire group were available. Thanks.

I became politically aware in 2009 or so.

When the argument about government spending was probably at its zenith.

I just remember it asserted, with complete and total assurance that it could only be true unless you were a cousing-fucking racist, that government spending created economic activity.

It's amazing what people can believe when it's just asserted by someone with initials after their name. Never mind any critical thought. "This PhD said it."

Something I've noticed for both actors and regular folks - most anyone who's good at singing (the real thing, not nonsense like rap or whiny country) is also very good at accents. My guess is that it has to do with hearing and feedback loops. Same thing goes for imitations in general.

For example, Lucy Lawless is someone you may not realize who can do any English based accent easily.

My guess is that Netflix and Paramount will end up divvying it up aided by the FTC getting involved. I don't think Netflix will be able to get HBO Max. Number 1 plus Number 3 would leave Disney in the dust at no 2. Also, because a lot of the worth of HBO Max is tied up on its vast collection of content, there would have to be all kinds of licensing agreements to prevent Netflix from dominating streaming due to owning a predominate share of content.

Netflix on the other hand does not really have a movie studio while Paramount does already. I read that the movie theater owners are decisively against Netflix taking over the studio though as they fear being totally left out in the cold by direct to streaming Netflix model. Actors and directors may flinch at that as well.

I don't think either Netflix or Paramount particularly want the spun off TV and cable properties.

Ironically, none of this would have been necessary had the CEO and WB board realized that Netflix ain't gonna get the whole enchilada due to legal entanglements from antitrust.
