A 65-year-old Thai woman stunned temple staff at a Buddhist temple near Bangkok after she was found alive inside a coffin just before her scheduled cremation. The incident occurred at Wat Rat Prakhong Tham in Nonthaburi province, where a video posted to the temple’s Facebook page showed the woman lying in a white coffin in the back of a pickup truck. Temple workers were shocked when they noticed movement—her arms and head subtly shifting. Pairat Soodthoop, the temple’s general and financial affairs manager, told the Associated Press that the woman had been brought from Phitsanulok province by her brother. He said the Thai woman had been bedridden for two years and appeared to have stopped breathing two days earlier. The brother, assuming she had died, placed her in a coffin and drove approximately 500 kilometers to Bangkok, intending to donate her organs as per her earlier wish. However, a hospital declined to accept the body due to the lack of an official death certificate.Emphasis mine. This must be the Thailand equivalent of a "Florida Man" story.
Oh, you were looking for something else about animals and alcohol? Got ya covered! Wild chimps consume more alcohol than anyone expected Date: December 1, 2025 Source: University of California - Berkeley Summary: Chimpanzees naturally ingest surprising amounts of alcohol from ripe, fermenting fruit. Careful measurements show that their typical fruit diet can equal one to two human drinks each day. This supports the idea that alcohol exposure is not a modern human invention but an ancient primate habit. The work strengthens the “drunken monkey” hypothesis and opens new questions about how animals use ethanol cues in their environment. This might be a repeat story from a previous ONT of mine. Not sure. I don't read my content.

AH Lloyd I sort of assumed that re CAFE, but am further assuming that (as with the fee for Class III firearms permits) the regulators could reduce the standard to, effectively, zero. Of course manufacturers could be wary, in the event of calamity in 2028 (i.e. return to totalitarian racist retard rule). But imports could flow in.
I have only seen references and brief snippets on it, but seems that Trump did something that would, inter alia, make importation of Hiluxes possible. Hope so, though I'm not a likely buyer. Just curious why that vehicle was effectively banned. For years I have seen, online, people (justifiably, I'd guess) whining about that situation. I usually post stuff like this on the hobby thread, but - we had a TRS-80 when I was a kid. When I was ten I recalled there was a square-root program in the Basic book when Extended Basic had the SQR() function, which wouldn't allow SQR(-1). I vaguely knew that SQR(-1) wasn't a thing. (I didn't know about the Imaginary plane of i.) So I tried running the Basic square-root program. (I didn't know about calculus or Newton then, either. Or the concept of convergence.) It just kept running and running without any conclusion. This is why they don't let ten year olds code, I guess. Posted by: gKWVE at December 04, 2025 10:35 PM (gKWVE) 156

It has to with CAFE standards and the way large trucks are legislatively treated differently than cars and small trucks. The formulas are complicated, but short story it was far more profitable to build large expensive trucks than small, and it helped satisfy fleet CAFE standards as well. (Only because of bad legislation). Foreign companies stopped importing them because there’s been a 25% “chicken tarriff” on all small trucks. Before the OPEC oil embargo, everybody and their brother put up outdoor Christmas lights. They went dark during the embargo and have only partially come back. My father and a lot of south Jersey would string ropes of laurel first, then string the C7s. It was fun pre-embargo to pile the family into the station wagon in the evening to drive around to see all the lights.

Not a car guy, at all, but many here are, so please to acesplain to me (summary) the deal with the Toyota Hilux trucks, specifically what made them "illegal" (Trump changed this today?) and what the likely market is for them.
For extra credit, explain why "CAFE" standards are not just eliminated, instead of tweaked/lowered? Posted by: rhomboid at December 04, 2025 10:25 PM (U/Byj) CAFE standard declare the mpg allowed for all the vehicles manufactured by a manufacturer and sold in the US. At the moment the vehicles outside of that size are the size of an old F-350 or bigger. CAFE standards were initially meant to help resolve the 1973 OPEC price hike and peak oil, now they are to push EVs. For reasons. "No. Consumers didn't wake up one day and decide they didn't want a 2 seater pickup that got 25 mpg and told Ford marketing surveys they want massive trucks that feel like your driving a Boeing 737. Those trucks were regulated out of existence by accelerated CAFE standards under democrats who literally wanted to regulate the ICE out of the market" Posted by: Kindltot at December 04, 2025 10:51 PM (rbvCR) Posted by: Soothsayer at December 04, 2025 10:51 PM (jwV58) 235

Posted by: Nemo I had to check every letter, but, yeah, that'll do. 💡 I thought Trump did away with the incandescent ban back in his first administration. Also low-flow in shower heads and appliances. Problem with all these kinds of things is, 1 First, government bans (or overtaxes) something, the manufacturers go out of business, move overseas, or at best re-tool. 2. Then the other party gets in, and even with good incentives, they have to start up those factories, coal mines, and nuke plants from scratch, build the incandescent market back up, rejigger all the toilets, whatever. 3. Then the regulator party gets back in and the cycle starts over (jump to 1). Not worth it. Which is why we need to completely and permanently eradicate the whole attitude about regulatory government - yeah, sure. 🙄 Posted by: mindful webworker - maybe after a quarter-century of hardcore MAGA.... at December 04, 2025 11:05 PM (XWUig) 297

I'm not loud, but I'm tacky. Posted by: BarelyScaryMary has never wrecked a car at December 04, 2025 11:46 PM (6p0Jv) I'm thinking of switching to LED lights. The problem is there's 30 frigging years of hallmark star trek and star wars ornaments that are powered by removing a bulb from the strand and plugging it in. If I can't remove single bulbs from the strings I'm screwed, and I'm not sure the LED ones work that way. For years I kept thinking about making them their own dedicated harness from 1 single light string, but every year we added more ornaments. The more recent ornaments don't get plugged in anymore and have their own batteries, which is stupid because they don't stay on until you turn them on individually, then they turn off by themselves in like 20 seconds, which makes them frigging worthless as a tree ornament. The only upside is I'm now working with a finite number of "plug in" ornaments and can make the harness. Not sure how LED string lights work. Individual LED's nominally work at 4.5 volts DC. You can string them in series to take a higher DC voltage, but if one draws a bit more juice than the others, the voltage doesn't apportion well, and something will burn out. Maybe the string lights get away with it because they are so low-powered?

Posted by: JQ at December 04, 2025 11:54 PM (rdVOm) yeah, this is why the tree takes 3 days. You have to unbox the start trek ornament, pull a bulb, plug in the ornament, make sure it makes contact in the socket so the string don't die, then put the bulb in the ornament box so you know where it is. then to take the tree down you have to leave the lights on as you unplug each ornament, then replace the bulb to make sure the light string lights back up. You get to do this for at 50 frigging ornaments. I swear, I'm tempted to go all kinds of goldfinger, cut a circular hole in the floor, install a hydraulic platform, push a button at my desk and a fully decorated tree appears from the frigging basement. Sorry that Qdpsteve told you that on the gun thread, must have missed it but that is well beyond the pale of acceptable behavior. Some type of people get furious about criticism and apparent rejection and pop off. Then escalate when called out on it. Think Jim SND had a similar experience over the same guy wanting to set up stakes card games or somewhat at a momeet. Jim was a gentleman but finally went nuclear which was awesome in the same way a mushroom cloud occurs after a large explosion leaves the target incinerated. Scary but a thing of beauty at the same time. AOP tried to warn Qdpsteve repeatedly about skating on thin ice but some people can't take a hint I guess. There was a story a couple of weeks ago, where a Toyota executive claimed they were going to bring a new model pickup truck to the US which would only cost $10,000. He was talking about it being a totally new design.

Mom told me, that the first Christmas after she & Dad were married-- they spent the holiday at Grandma's house (Dad's widowed mother) and set up her tree with the old-style candle holders.
Grandma put the little candles on, and they lit the tree. Let them burn for just a minute and extinguished all. Mom said it was truly enchanting to see! And oh, so very dangerous. But she treasured that memory & wished they had a camera then, even though it likely would not have captured the totality of awesomeness. Posted by: JQ at December 05, 2025 12:20 AM (rdVOm) 425

1. His middle name is "Patsy" 2. He was an extra on the set of "The Fall Guy". Neighbors say he is Autistic. When arrested he admitted his guilt: His statement to FBI agents: "Don't hurt my doggie". When I was a yute a person could buy a permit from the park service and go into the national forest and cut down one tree and bring it back home. (I’m sure that’s not allowed any more). One year my dad got such a permit and we drove up near Flagstaff to find and capture the perfect Christmas Tree. It was a lot of fun, we didn’t see snow often at all, and I remember sliding down an icy hill with no board, just my pants, and catching a hidden rock with my crotch halfway down. Good times, good times.
Of course Dad did a Griswold and tied a tree onto the roof that was longer than the car, and we drove two hours back that way. And my mom just looked at him when he finally had to face the puzzle of how to get a 14 foot tree through an 8 foot door. It was a lovely tree, though. My oldest brother and several of his college friends bought surplus jeeps in crates in the late 60s. Of course had mods they added (roll bars, which as it turned out got used during probably well lubricated rowdy nights out in the desert after geology stuff was done for the day). I remember "helping" him build it (simple menial stuff that needed doing).
These were the days when M1s were in barrels at the gun store for probably $70 or something. Enjoy it, the Moon won't be this high again for another 18.6 years. I say "high". What this means is the Moon's orbital plane is at it's highest inclination with respect to earth's equatorial plane. This is the "nodal precession" cycle, causing the Moon's inclination to alternately add and subtract from the earth's axial tilt. Anyway, last summer, the full Moon was about as low in the sky as it can get. When that tilt is high, the full Moon can take it's extremes of altitude in the local sky. I remember picking up a box turtle at church and it peed on the back seat of my parents' 1973 Chevy Impala. We let it loose in the yard. \
Later, I learned you should never relocate a box turtle. They spend their lives looking for home. I felt very sad for my childish mistake. Posted by: BarelyScaryMary at December 05, 2025 01:27 AM (6p0Jv) 519
