Thursday Overnight Open Thread - December 4, 2025 [Doof]

doof-doggy-stockings.jpg

The Thursday ONT has arrived. Have you? How's your holiday shopping going? Still plenty of time to get something great for your favorite ONT COB.

By the way, today is National Sock Day. Around here that is important to The Paolo, Amy Schumer, BEN ROETHLISBERGER, and Mary Cloggenstein from Battleboro. Also very important to our ONT friend, Miklos. What other prominent socks did I miss? Also, this would be a good night to try on some new socks. What ya got??

Close Call!

Thai Woman Found Alive in Coffin Moments Before Cremation

A 65-year-old Thai woman stunned temple staff at a Buddhist temple near Bangkok after she was found alive inside a coffin just before her scheduled cremation.

The incident occurred at Wat Rat Prakhong Tham in Nonthaburi province, where a video posted to the temple’s Facebook page showed the woman lying in a white coffin in the back of a pickup truck. Temple workers were shocked when they noticed movement—her arms and head subtly shifting.

Pairat Soodthoop, the temple’s general and financial affairs manager, told the Associated Press that the woman had been brought from Phitsanulok province by her brother. He said the Thai woman had been bedridden for two years and appeared to have stopped breathing two days earlier.

The brother, assuming she had died, placed her in a coffin and drove approximately 500 kilometers to Bangkok, intending to donate her organs as per her earlier wish. However, a hospital declined to accept the body due to the lack of an official death certificate.

Emphasis mine. This must be the Thailand equivalent of a "Florida Man" story.

Critter Corner

On Tuesday, I featured a story about a drunk raccoon. This might be his cousin.

Oh, you were looking for something else about animals and alcohol? Got ya covered!

Wild chimps consume more alcohol than anyone expected

Date: December 1, 2025

Source: University of California - Berkeley

Summary: Chimpanzees naturally ingest surprising amounts of alcohol from ripe, fermenting fruit. Careful measurements show that their typical fruit diet can equal one to two human drinks each day. This supports the idea that alcohol exposure is not a modern human invention but an ancient primate habit. The work strengthens the “drunken monkey” hypothesis and opens new questions about how animals use ethanol cues in their environment.

This might be a repeat story from a previous ONT of mine. Not sure. I don't read my content.

However, the regulatory agencies have authority to set various requirements, so Trump is using that authority to de facto eliminate it.

154 AH Lloyd I sort of assumed that re CAFE, but am further assuming that (as with the fee for Class III firearms permits) the regulators could reduce the standard to, effectively, zero. Of course manufacturers could be wary, in the event of calamity in 2028 (i.e. return to totalitarian racist retard rule). But imports could flow in.

I have only seen references and brief snippets on it, but seems that Trump did something that would, inter alia, make importation of Hiluxes possible. Hope so, though I'm not a likely buyer. Just curious why that vehicle was effectively banned. For years I have seen, online, people (justifiably, I'd guess) whining about that situation.

155 What happens when you divide by zero on a mechanical 1950s calculator?

I usually post stuff like this on the hobby thread, but - we had a TRS-80 when I was a kid. When I was ten I recalled there was a square-root program in the Basic book when Extended Basic had the SQR() function, which wouldn't allow SQR(-1).
I vaguely knew that SQR(-1) wasn't a thing. (I didn't know about the Imaginary plane of i.)
So I tried running the Basic square-root program. (I didn't know about calculus or Newton then, either. Or the concept of convergence.)
It just kept running and running without any conclusion.
This is why they don't let ten year olds code, I guess.

I understand it, but I don’t know if I can explain it well. It has to with CAFE standards and the way large trucks are legislatively treated differently than cars and small trucks. The formulas are complicated, but short story it was far more profitable to build large expensive trucks than small, and it helped satisfy fleet CAFE standards as well. (Only because of bad legislation). Foreign companies stopped importing them because there’s been a 25% “chicken tarriff” on all small trucks. (And that was long before Trump)

So he has now wiped all that away. Small trucks can be imported and sold again. Personally, I had a couple in the 80’s and 90’s and lovec them.

-----
Yes it is Doof! But my posts are still *disappearing* when I post from home. The ONLY record that this post took place at all will be IF one or more of you reading it will QUOTE it and then post a response for me.

Doof, CBD promised to look into this for me when I pointed it out to him this morning. He had previously (seemingly) fixed it in last night's ONT, where I posted 4 or 5 times in the first 20. And then it all ended and all of my posts vanished (like this one will) shortly after I posted them.

Doof, is there anything you can do?

Also, would some of you please quote this post, so there is a record of it? If you click refresh before doing so, it will disappear. I'd love to participate in ONTs, but I can't if my home posting privileges aren't restored!

Absolutely. At my old house the people next door were, um, prescription drug junkies on disability. The lady of the house was a nasty person. I just ignored her. I smiled and waved in passing, but avoided getting into any kind of conversation with her. The woman a few houses down was a lesbian, apparently batshit crazy. A few years after I moved they were all in the news because they had gotten into one of those ongoing feuds, and the lesbian stabbed the junkies to death. Posted by: rhomboid at December 04, 2025 10:25 PM (U/Byj)

CAFE standard declare the mpg allowed for all the vehicles manufactured by a manufacturer and sold in the US. At the moment the vehicles outside of that size are the size of an old F-350 or bigger.

CAFE standards were initially meant to help resolve the 1973 OPEC price hike and peak oil, now they are to push EVs. For reasons.

"No. Consumers didn't wake up one day and decide they didn't want a 2 seater pickup that got 25 mpg and told Ford marketing surveys they want massive trucks that feel like your driving a Boeing 737. Those trucks were regulated out of existence by accelerated CAFE standards under democrats who literally wanted to regulate the ICE out of the market"

246 another quote about the Hilux

"The Toyota Helux Champ will soon be on the American market! It’s a light-duty, basic pickup truck that will likely sell for less than $20k. Until today, U.S. regulations made it impossible to sell in our markets"

and positive comments about the Hilux Champ:

Here are 5 great points about the Toyota Hilux Champ:
1) Starts at just ~$13,000 USD – insanely affordable for a brand-new Toyota truck.
2) Tough 2.0L/2.7L petrol or 2.4L diesel engines with proven Hilux durability.
3) Ladder-frame chassis, rear-wheel drive, and high ground clearance – built for real work and off-road.
4) Super modular: flatbed, camper, food truck, or mini-RV conversions are easy and factory-supported.
5) Legendary Toyota reliability + huge parts network worldwide – it will outlast almost anything in its price range

further, you can buy them for ready cash in Colombia with a diesel engine, and I am pissed about this. F___ing Colombia

I thought Trump did away with the incandescent ban back in his first administration. Also low-flow in shower heads and appliances.

Problem with all these kinds of things is,

1 First, government bans (or overtaxes) something, the manufacturers go out of business, move overseas, or at best re-tool.

2. Then the other party gets in, and even with good incentives, they have to start up those factories, coal mines, and nuke plants from scratch, build the incandescent market back up, rejigger all the toilets, whatever.

3. Then the regulator party gets back in and the cycle starts over (jump to 1).

Not worth it. Which is why we need to completely and permanently eradicate the whole attitude about regulatory government - yeah, sure. 🙄

The Minnesota governor, on Thursday, Dec. 4, said people have been driving by his home and screaming the retard-slur — a word used to malign those with intellectual disabilities — since President Donald Trump called him that in a social media post last week.

“This creates danger,” the embattled governor said, discussing Republican rhetoric. “… I’ve never seen this before: people driving by my house and using the R-word in front of people. This is shameful, and I have yet to see an elected official — a Republican elected official — say you’re right, that’s shameful.”

Tik Tok goblins just donned their fake "law expert" hats, tonight, and are pretending to spaz out over the Court's decision to not stop TX from doing legal, Constitutional things.

These goblins are trying to get Justices killed.

321 I had one of these critters-- it was my "bar mascot" because the thing couldn't stand up on it's own (beanbag legs). Named it Blitzen...

Cutest lil drunken reindeer, LOL:

323 You reminded me of a current code for outdoor outlets. They are manufactured now where you can't just shove the plug in (or a fork) . You have to wiggle the plug prongs until it somehow opens the outlet to allow you to push it in. Ridiculous.

Which is a really weird thing for an Objectivist to say, IMO.

Freedom is the default of Nature.

There must be a video of that somewhere.

Maybe it's time to revisit the Gyrojet action for light machine guns. No recoil, because each projectile is a tiny rocket. No rifling needed, because the rocket jets are tangential, imparting spin. Gun would be very cheap to build. The drawbacks to Gyrojet were low velocity at short range, and poor accuracy. AS a pintle-mounted machinegun, neither of those would very important. Main use would be dealing with mobs.
