I can't disagree with the IBM CEO on the numbers for buulding out AI data centers, becuae he's making a lot of sense there.
I just can't help but wonder if he's actually talking his book, and IBM is waiting on quantum computing to be the next boom, which I'm positive will cost a lot more than AI since the tech is so new and extremely expensive to build, run and maintain. Quantum is definitely the next tech boom waiting in the wings. Posted by: SpeakingOf at December 04, 2025 04:50 AM (6ydKt) 32

Posted by: Colin at December 04, 2025 05:31 AM (wlQdF) Probably not. Quantum computing is a different way of computing data but that doesn't invalidate the value of the data itself. There's a lot of hand-wavy promises about quantum but it's not likely, ever, to become something widely used due the difficulty in shielding the qubits. If 'perfected', it'll be useful for government and big labs. Posted by: I used to have a different nic at December 04, 2025 05:51 AM (ExV1e) 54

Posted by: Colin at December 04, 2025 05:31 AM (wlQdF) Quantum may replace classic computing eventually, but probably not in most of our lifetimes. Quantum computers have to be kept at well below zero temps to work correctly. The most recent advances have worked with operating temps around 1 kelvin (-458 F). So it requires some pretty heavy duty equipment to get the temps that low. Most Quantum will be done via the cloud/data centers until they can figure out how to run them at near room temperature so everybody will be able to run them anywhere. Posted by: Colin ---- Quantum is the most overhyped tech right now. It can never replace classical computing. Even once it's perfected, it will only give exponential speedup for a very narrow range of problems. It will break a whole bunch of cryptography though, so there is that. Evening and morning, Thor's Day toilers and early risers! I'm awake, for certain values of awake, have fed two instances of furry thugs, and am having coffee. That's enough for now.
The rain we were threatened with was supposed to begin about midnight. It hasn't. Most of the line seems to be north of the lake, which is well north of me. It'll be here about 8 am, they say now. From that same site CBD linked to, there's an article about making fuel for molten-salts reactors.
https://tinyurl.com/2csdk8mc (interestingengineering.com) According to INL, the project is attracting significant interest from the maritime sector beyond land-based energy applications. Molten salt reactors offer the potential for compact, long-lasting nuclear propulsion systems capable of powering commercial ships with minimal maintenance and no emissions during operation. With the ability to support long voyages without refueling, the technology could transform shipping logistics and energy economics. Support from private industry and continued federal investment signal momentum toward reactor demonstration and eventual commercial deployment. Researchers highlighted that if successful, the project could help establish a new nuclear propulsion industry, expand US leadership in advanced nuclear systems, and position the technology as a competitive alternative to global maritime reactors already under development Posted by: SpeakingOf at December 04, 2025 07:02 AM (6ydKt) 127

Fun story about Christmas shopping last night. My mother-in-law needs a folding cane and my wife found a decent one for her. I hit the site, found what I needed and was having technical issues. Jump on the chat and explain what's going on.
Before I finished talking with the lady, the problem self corrected. It was only after I finished paying for things that I saw she offered me a discount code to make up for the problem. Ended up calling the company and got the same woman on the line. She arranged for the discount to be applied to my order. They want my money and proved that they deserve it.
