  • Would you like to buy a clue... For $1 million? (AP)

    There's a sculpture called Kryptos at the CIA offices in McLean, Virginia, which contains four panels of encrypted text. Three have been decrypted by puzzle-solvers, but the fourth has defied all attempts since the installation was created in 1990.

    The artist, now aged 80, has auctioned off his notes and clues to the contents of that fourth panel... For close to $1 million.

20 The remaining features of the BlackBerry-esque smartphone include an IR blaster, so the Lotus Diplomat can be used as a TV remote, for instance.

Always a hand dandy feature in a phone that will probably cost $3000.

The Lotus watchface in the middle of the keyboard is... something.

Posted by: SpeakingOf at December 01, 2025 04:52 AM (6ydKt)

21 Oh, now I see the watchface is a 1"-sized Always-On IPS display.

The small display has two operating modes. When the device is in active use, the small display works in conjuction [sic] with the 4-position frame-button and, when pressed, confirms the action with an OK key. When the device is locked, the small display switches to always-on display.

You can see it on the funky-looking website.
https://www.lotus-jb.com/

If you scroll down to the bottom there's a paragraph explaining their plans and one part is to put out a watch as well, so I guess that's an explanation.

I love you, Lord, my strength.
2 The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield and the horn[c] of my salvation, my stronghold.
3 I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise,
and I have been saved from my enemies.
4 The cords of death entangled me;
the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me.
5 The cords of the grave coiled around me;
the snares of death confronted me.
6 In my distress I called to the Lord;
I cried to my God for help.
From his temple he heard my voice;
my cry came before him, into his ears.

92 mornin yall. The first microcomputer I ever used was the OSI 6502 clone that my dad and I built in 1976. 4k RAM, no permanent storage, programmed in hex. We typed in the code for Hangman and it lasted a few days until the power went out. We played around with it for a year or so, did some upgrades and learned a lot before it was replaced with one of the first TRS-80s. It had cassette storage! What a luxury.

More than likely going to create a home management access point.

People are makign Bitcoin lottery miner's with these things.

But sky's the limit with these things.

The amount of tech we have access now is staggering.

Adjusted for inflation, the C64 a 6502 based computer was almost 2k dollars.

You can pick up a three pack of esp32 SOC's for 17 bucks, that are orders of magnitude more capable, in fact you could run a c64 emulator on one and store every game ever created in a portable device the size of a Altoids can.

Somewhat, but not much. There is that kind of action, too, but it isn't significant yet.

What it *is*, however, is essentially identical to the vendor financing schemes of the last tech bubble. Those schemes caused the outright failure of Lucent Technologies, Nortel Networks and Sun Microsystems (though Sun had enough residual value to be appealing as a takeover target, and Oracle bought it).

Vendor financing in high tech is very dangerous, and the AI bubble manufacturers are wading in hip deep. It will not destroy the bigs like Nvidia, AMD and Broadcom, but it might take out some smaller players. It will leave smoking craters in the bigs' balance sheets, though.
