Daily Tech News 0 December 2025

Top Story

  • Year of Linux on the Desktop? Part One: Does Linux actually account for 11% of desktops even in the US - and a higher number globally? (ZD Net)

Probably, yes. You get that number by adding together desktop Linux, ChromeOS (which is Linux) and "Unknown" numbers.

Globally Linux numbers are about 50% higher, and looking at US government website stats, 25% of requests come from some flavour of Linux (including Android).

  • Year of Linux on the Desktop? Part Two: Google's AluminiumOS (yes, they spell it with two eyes) brings Android to the desktop. (Thurrott)

And Google has already been working to merge ChromeOS with Android. So this would bring a thoroughly-tested Linux variant with a huge collection of existing applications to the desktop, though half of those apps are Kairosoft games.

And the new Steam Cube is due to launch soon, bringing SteamOS - again, a flavour of Linux - to the desktop.

With Microsoft working tirelessly to destroy Windows, these consumer-oriented Linux versions may bring welcome relief.

Tech News

  • Yes, Virginia, there are still some tech bargains: Seagate's 24TB Barracuda model is selling for just one cent per gigabyte. (Tom's Hardware)

Or $240 for the whole thing.

Well, not in Australia, where it is significantly more expensive and also completely out of stock everywhere.

With SSD prices on the rise this may be a good choice for people looking to build a high-capacity NAS.

  • Speaking of SSD prices, an interesting thing is happening there. The shortage is affecting NAND flash generally. All versions, from high-reliability enterprise chips to the cheap stuff targeted at microSD cards.

Meanwhile PCIe 5 controller chips for consumer SSDs are coming down in price, meaning that the price gap between PCIe 4 and PCIe 5 drives is fast disappearing. At the start of the year it cost around 100% more for a PCIe 5 drive; now it's closer to 30%.

  • People are more likely to give up their seats to pregnant women on public transport when Batman is present. (Nature)

He's not going to hurt you. He's just going to judge you.

  • Why a RAM boycott isn't going to do anything. (WCCFTech)

Because 70% of RAM goes to enterprise customers and if you don't buy it, they will.

    So what's the solution?

Linux. It's notably more memory efficient than Windows.

  • Why Honda is suddenly launching reusable rockets. (The Verge) (archive site)

Because they don't do much if you don't launch them.

People don't often think of them that way, but Honda is a successful aerospace company.

  • Someone tell Petronius the Arbiter that I've found the Door into Summer.

Now I just need to find the Door Back into Pleasant Spring Weather.

  • Updated my Minecraft modpack. It's still on 1.20.1 because some key mods aren't available on anything later - Minecraft doesn't care at all about mod compatibility between versions - but I found a single mod (Vanilla Backports) that bundles together backports of all six feature releases since then.

Dye Depot and Dye the World - which add 16 more colours to vanilla Minecraft and to 19 other mods respectively - have both been updated. And Create: Steam and Rails has a beta version with Create 6.0 compatibility. I took Create out of the modpack entirely because the update to Create 6.0 broke compatibility with a lot of other mods, and if I wanted Steam and Rails and included Create 5.0, that broke still more things. Looks like the great rift is finally healing.

And after a whole bunch of tweaks and changes and updates, it just worked. That never happens.

Tanya Interlude

Nine years after season one and seven years after the movie, anime's sweetheart is back. Tanya the Misunderstood will return for its second season next year. The original cast though not the director are also returning.

(For those who haven't seen it, The Saga of Tanya the Evil is set in an alternate universe where World War I didn't happen but the October Revolution in Russia - or something very much like it - did. Now it's the 1920s and the Great War has lit off with everyone fighting everyone else, and Tanya really does not like commies.)

Snowfall rates can be light, moderate, or heavy. I was intrigued and got to looking at NWS definitions. There is no standard really, some offices will define in terms of rate. Visibility correlates with snow rate somewhat, with the solid to liquid ratio coming in and all that.

A rate of 1" per hour would be "heavy snow". Visibility would be low. Now over time, 6" in 12 hours is considered a heavy snowfall, as well as 8" in 24 hours.

Sigh, I love pedants who don't know what they are talking about. Average circulated silver coins are considered to have .715 troy oz per $100 face. Your values are for UNCIRCULATED COINS IN PRISTINE CONDITION. Nobody sells those for their silver value.

Worn circulated coins have clearly lost some of their silver when they get worn. The general agreement is to rate worn circulated coins at .715 troy oz per $100 face. If you think a worn silver dollar still has .77 troy oz, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I would like to sell to you.

38 One topic around the Thanksgiving table was the end of the penny. We were all guessing their are enough pennies stored away in old coffee cans, jars, etc in peoples closets to keep the pennies around a long time, or at least until we go digital. I have some gold coins and they are just stored somewhere in the house. But I probably won't get anywhere near the spot price for an American Eagle gold coin around here. I once was offered about half of the spot price, locally.

40 You’re talking about coins known in the trade as “slicks”. Coinage circulated heavily, that’s true. Those coins are so worn as to be almost unrecognizable.

Unscrupulous types sell slicks, and the key here, they don’t sell them at .715 either, that’s part of the scam.

A reputable dealer of course sells worn coins, they all are, but they don’t sell slicks. Good try though!

67 Yesterday, also, I stopped off at the Boot Barn and Cavender's in my neighborhood to look at cowboy boots. I have a nice pair of black cherry Dan Post boots which are being resoled -- I wore them a lot this first summer of retirement; they were not that hot -- and I'd like a second pair. It appears the styles have moved from the round toe I prefer to these wide square things that look like duck feet. The Dan Posts they had were still round toe, and so were another brand called Cody James. I tried on a black pair and found the CJs to be comfortable right away.

We have a Tecovas store in BR, about ninety minutes' drive away, and their sale prices are not that much higher than those at Boot Barn. It might be interesting to see if their products are as good as Sean Hannity says.

I'm at an undisclosed location that will remain so. Nothing nefarious is underway, this is a hunting location, I do not intend it be ruined like the previous one was by being publicized. The second neat thing that's also remaining anonymous is the 2x4 diner we just ate at. Tey don't realize what they have for delicious food, hot and properly proportioned (as in huge). The sausage with biscuits and gravy being one, don't know that I've ever had better. May be worth just saying the hell with hunting, let's stay here and gorge for a bit. They DO have a great local rep but not widespread. Perhaps it would be worthwhile tracking them to see if expansion happens and if the quality remains good.

90 Yeah a RAM boycott won’t work.
Most people who DIY their PCs build and forget it for five or more years.

Only the most die hard gamers and PC enthusiasts update their systems every year or so, or add or update components regularly.

So at most there’s a few million people who would care enough to boycott and most of them are already doing that by turning their noses up at these prices.

The people being hurt right now are the first-time system builders, think Dad & Son trying to do a project, and small businesses who need to update their kit.

They’re getting hammered along with anybody on the five or seven year cycle who need to update their PC built years ago.

The 0 date is actually used sometimes, generally for Jan. The big epoch were ephemeris time (which evolved to something dubbed Terrestrial Time, or TT) was set equal to GMT/UT on Jan 0, 1900.

And that was using the astronomical convention of starting the day at noon, not midnight, so it was really Jan 0.5, 1900, which was noon, Dec. 31, 1899, which would be really Jan 1, 1900 in Julian date format. :-), but Jan 0 was used for the civil/midnight convention to avoid confusion.

It is not limited to a single operating system. You can try it with Manjaro with Plasma mobile OS, - alert Yes it's ready for you to do installation & boot up and download stuff to make it functional.

UBports, Sailfish OS, and others. PinePhone packs in some decent specifications that include a Quad-core processor and 2/3 Gigs of RAM.
It does support a bootable microSD card ALERT! to help you with installation, along with 16/32 GB eMMC storage options.

It would be simple for them to have it ready to go out of the box with instructions and links for tinkering. Just one more little step people.

141 Mass Shooting in Stockton: 19 Shot, 4 Dead at Children’s Party. Location is banquet hall on Lucille and Thornton.

19 victims. 4 dead as of now, all children. #stockton

Stockton Vice Mayor Jason Lee said, on a social media post, a children's birthday party was the site of a mass shooting, adding that an "ice cream shop should never be a place where families fear for their lives."

However, the Associated Press reported that the shooting occurred at a banquet hall, and that the victims were both children and adults.

The sheriff's office said there are indications that the shooting could have been a targeted attack.

The odd thing is that my Justin Ropers, which I have had since the mid-'90s, are 9.5 D; yet they fit perfectly. They must have gotten sprung in all the right places over thirty years.

There's a local non-chain Western wear store in the suburban city where I'll pick up my resoled Dan Posts on Tuesday. I can drive down and see what they have. The last time I was in there, though, it had become more of a boutique for suburban ladies who want to drink wine while they shop for "Western" clothes.

183 Your Government at Work

In order to make housing more affordable in the early 2000s, Fannie and Freddie Mac, US government mortgage guarantor companies, began pressuring mortgage lenders to widen their rules for mortgage lending, even to include NINJA loans—No Income, No Job, No Problem—for purchasing real estate properties; then Fannie and Freddie married that expansion with marketing Adjustable Rate Mortgages, which would float according to Federal Reserve rates.

The outcome was the real estate and stock market crash of 2008. Since then, between 2009 and 2016, the fed rate was kept arbitrarily low at .75%, which inflated real estate prices; from 2020 to 2022, the fed rate was pushed down again to .25%, with the result of further increasing the average home price from $220,900 in 2010 to $420,000 in 2024. At the same time, the Federal Reserve has pushed up interest rates to 5.5%, so the average American has to pay more and borrow at higher rates for real estate, thanks to the government’s interventions to make housing more affordable.

Given that many are scamming the system by registering under a dozen or so identities, that many others are piggy backing on stolen identities, and various government entities and NGOs deliberately want to fudge the numbers to obfuscate the absolute corruption and fraud throughout the entire system, the numbers are quite meaningless once you get past the first few digits.

Instead of "18,0000" or "352,959", think of it in orders of magnitude - tens of thousands vs hundreds of thousands.

Hah! I remember doing some work for a South African operation that was getting into cloud based PSAP software (all the stuff you would find at a 9-1-1 call center) There was a need to intercept the ALI (the system where your phone informs your exact location to the PSAP) and convert that into a Lat/Long/Elevation (so we can determine what floor of a building you are calling from)

The equipment was rather modest, but because of CJIS and other government sourcing standards, they wanted the provenance of the equipment to be US based.

That was a No Go. I knew some people who build customer equipment and they laughed because most components just are not made in the US, and the assembly cost in the US was like 10x what it could be done for overseas.

AMERICA: NORTH CAROLINA WAS TARGETED IN 2021 - AND THIS IS HOW RED STATES GET FLIPPED

In 2021, Greensboro media proudly announced the arrival of Afghan sharia-adherent refugees to the Piedmont Triad.

Church World Service (CWS) bragged on camera that everything “went well” as they lined up housing, apartments, volunteers, and gift cards for their newest arrivals.

They openly said they were preparing for more and, of course, emphasized their “main goal”: finding a “clear pathway for these individuals to be able to adjust their status.”

-- Ethiopian Community Development Council
-- HIAS (Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society)
-- International Rescue Committee
-- Lutheran Immigration & Refugee Service
-- U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops
-- U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants
-- World Relief

They decide who comes, where they go, and which communities get transformed.

And they target red states because that is where flipping political power delivers more federal money for their replacement machine.

"We know that the side effects from Covid vaccinations far exceeded anything else in the last 30 years combined."

"It's important for us to lend our voices to that — not to just let it be swept under the rug."

“40% of rent controlled properties are being lived in by people who weren’t even born in the country….
We bring in people from foreign countries, and then we pay to lower the cost of their housing while people who were born here have to pay higher prices.”

236 Zelazny on your list takes me back. When in early grades I had joined the Science Fiction Book Club, where I got 20?) free books to join in exchange for a monthly commitment of some sort. There I found Chronicles of Amber and read many others of his following

This is the kind of powerful weapon against illegal alien fraud that goes unreported by the liberal media juggernaut. Yet another victory by President Trump and his terrific cabinet.

Scott Bessent is a warrior.

Ian Jaeger @IanJaeger29

BREAKING: Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announces that he is removing illegal immigrants from the financial system completely.

He is removing tax benefits and cross-border money transfers.

I voted for this.

An “internal” memo leaked from FDA files attributed to ten childhood deaths caused by the COVID “vaccine.”

Will the truth about COVID and the trillion dollar money scam surrounding the vaccine ever be fully told? A vaccine that didn’t stop a disease (created in a Wuhan bioweapons lab) that appears to be more deadly than the disease itself is the stuff of Hollywood horror movies.

COVID: a disease so deadly you need a test to know you have it, and a trillion dollar vaccine that doesn’t cure it or stop it from spreading to others.

Ian Miller @ianmSC

Remember, Gavin Newsom mandated COVID vaccines for all schoolchildren and compared them to polio shots — now we learn the FDA has found that at least 10 children died as a result of COVID vaccines

Following incompetent “experts” was quite literally dangerous for children

Climate alarmist tells the UN: "Climate change is caused 20% by meat and dairy, so the producers of meat and dairy should pay for the damage they cause."

"When I damage the window of my neighbour, I have to repair this damage, but meat and dairy processors also have to repair the damage they cause on others, and in the future." 🤡
