Various foods and containers compete for space on a bare wooden shelf or table. A plate is piled high with walnuts, with chestnuts and oranges scattered nearby and a colossal melon behind. There are earthenware jugs, probably containing oil or wine, and a small barrel. The round boxes were normally used for storing cheese, the rectangular ones for sweets such as dulce de membrillo, a thick quince jelly eaten in slices.

Mom always put nuts and oranges in the stockings when we were small.
Was there a specific reason? I've always wondered. Posted by: Doesn't Matter My Mom grew up during the Great Depression. Every Christmas Eve, when they'd go to church, the kids would get an orange as a gift. She used to talk about how much she looked forward to that orange every year. Maybe there's some specific connection of oranges with Christmas? Or maybe it's just a tasty way to contrast the warmth and sunshine of Florida with the cold, snowy Christmas season in the North? Posted by: Bulg at December 02, 2025 09:53 AM (77rzZ) 96
The art....
It's a nice still life but it's dark. Why is it so dark? Is it the drab colors? Is it deliberately dark? Is the painting just dirty? Is the artist trying to show the world before electric lights? Not sure about this one. It really does seem dirty and dingy. Posted by: Madamemayhem (uppity wench) at December 02, 2025 09:53 AM (2J/Lj) 97

WRT oranges at Christmas - it comes from the legend of St Nicholas, who, to save three girls from having to prostitute themselves, came by at night and filled their stockings with gold.
This legend led to people putting out shoes or stockings on December 6, waiting for the saint to leave them a gift. Oranges are meant to represent the bags of gold, because of their color. "11 o'clock? Yes, sir!" Posted by: San Franpsycho at December 02, 2025 09:53 AM (A0sqA) Crushing two in your fist against each other is easy with English walnuts, the hard one is breaking a single walnut in your fingers. During our misspent youth somebody got the bright idea, a bunch of us decided to go winter camping. Probably me, I dunno. We took a Wards 2 man tent with fly, and a case of beer.
It wasn’t like camping in the summer! We built a fire out of fast burning easily gathered “squaw wood”. Soon the fire was out, the beer was gone, and so was the Sun. Froze our behinds off. I had my summer Scout sleeping bag, which I had outgrown. Had depictions of Boy Scouts shooting arrows and cooking over a fire and stuff like that on the liner. I enjoy still life paintings and this one is wonderful. It lacks the brilliant colors and exuberance of the Dutch still life but is just as effective. Luis Meléndez's are more intimate, smaller settings, with earthier tones. But they are as realistic as the Dutch masters and show equal talent.
Costco's 12 miles away via big busy metro boulevards, maybe 15 traffic lights, looking at both sides road, pass 15 or so gas stations.
I really didn't look at the posted prices much, but I recall seeing a $3.14 sigh on one. Paid $2.99 to fill an almost empty tank and was feeling good, but then on ride home, checking all the posted prices, found that the $3.14 was an anomaly. All others were between $2.84 and $3.04, many at the same $2.99 I had just paid at Costco. So, Costco sucks. And here is a question about Costco. >>Hey Jack, do you have a theory on why Trump and/or his team are not hammering on & using the bully pulpit to explain the now-unraveled conspiracy of Venezuela & Maduro -- SmartMatic & Dominion -- and Serbian server election fraud & theft that's been "electing" Commies throughout The West for decades?
My theory is that there is a lot more going on with the Venezuela situation than any one issue like vote rigging. That's a real problem but it's a symptom not the cause. Venezuela is ground zero for foreign meddling from China, Iran and Russia not to mention Hezbollah. Maduro has opened the door to his communist benefactors and they are using Venezuela to create all sorts of problems for the US including drugs, human trafficking and cartels on top of vote interference. Trump has set up and air and sea blockade of Venezuela. This seems too big to be about any single issue. More about his assertion of the Monroe Doctrine. All foreign intrigue out of the western hemisphere. He might want to keep that on the down low for the time being while stuff is going on behind the scene. Just my theory. Just spent an hour on the phone with Indian call service for Eero routers. They were telling me that a brief internet outage prevented the router from reconnecting, even after multiple reboots. I said brief internet outages happen all the time, and they've got a serious design problem if that prevents their routers from reconnecting. She claimed that this in fact never happens. Bullshit.

Currently, because of low precipitation so far, there some snow at the top but less than usual. Mt. Hermon has Israel's only ski resort. By using IQ only you don't know what other traits you are selecting in or out and it's irresponsible to limit the field. I already have a theory that the world's most dangerous cohort are the 115 IQ's, all easily convinced they can be geniuses merely by repeating the correct dogma. Somehow it doesn't seem as easy to convince 85 IQ people of said same because they have no aspiration toward high intellect and are therefore potentially more difficult to manipulate.
