Any opinions on the various home NAS on the market? I assume that the hardware is roughly equal, so it depends on the software... Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at November 27, 2025 04:06 AM (n9ltV) Posted by: m at November 27, 2025 04:09 AM (RuTUS) 10

CBD - QNAP has a reputation for security mishaps, Synology has a reputation for locking down hardware after you've bought it, though both have taken steps to repair this.
Asus seems... Generally good. The little Beelink thing I bought (and have yet to set up) is well-regarded if you only want SSD storage and don't need the fastest speeds. There are a number of small four-drive SSD-based models and most of them overheat. Posted by: Pixy Misa at November 27, 2025 04:12 AM (BLOW1) 12

Pixy....thanks.
The SSD-based ones are still too pricy because of the cost of the memory. Boring old spinning drives are so much cheaper that it seems to make sense to get a bigger NAS with more slots. The memory is currently running at less than $20/TB! Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at November 27, 2025 04:21 AM (n9ltV) 15

CBD - If you need bulk storage, a disk-based system that supports an SSD cache (most do nowadays) is the way to go. Gives you most of the speed at much less cost.

@Pixy:
Posted in yesterday's "Giving Thanks" thread, was this post by "Crusader" - I promised him I'd carry it forward to today's Tech News: #72 - I want to say that I'm thankful for Pixy Misa and the Tech Thread that appears every morning. I am NOT techy, but the column is entertaining and well-written. I read it every single day because its a fun read and it helps keep me somewhat aware of what the computer geeks and their money is up to. I know better than to post on an old thread, and I'm never awake when the Tech Thread is active, so I want to say "Thanks!" here instead. From the Framework Desktop review:
That brings us to the most bizarre feature. There is a PCIe Gen4 x4 slot on the motherboard. While that is exciting, someone forgot to put a low-profile card I/O slot between the PSU and the motherboard on the rear of the system. This is a huge miss, and one that even, having used the system for more than a month, I cannot get over. Perhaps you can stick an M.2 card in there, but it would have opened up the possibilities of this system so much to just have a low-profile card slot here (and an open-ended PCIe slot.) You end up with a PCIe Gen4 x4 slot that is not very useful because of the chassis design. Yeah, that was a huge oversight. Even if that slot is barely usable to begin with it would be nice to have somewhere to plug cables into it without cutting holes are leaving the side open with cables hanging out. STH is the first reviewer I’ve seen mention this problem. Posted by: SpeakingOf at November 27, 2025 06:19 AM (6ydKt) 64

Posted by: Pixy Misa at November 27, 2025 06:29 AM (BLOW1) It’s probably that Framework designed this system before they started getting the motherboards in. The board looks like the same motherboards MinisForum puts out with the mobile chip soldered in and heatsink already installed. So they designed it around an ITX motherboard size and didn’t even think about the PCIe slot until they started arriving and then they said “Ooops, too late to change anything on the chassis now!” If it happened any other way than that somebody just wasn’t paying attention who should have been. I did my regular shopping yesterday. Earlier I was waiting for my SS check to hit the bank. Still, it wasn't too bad. I was in and out of Walmart in twenty-five minutes. The local chain grocery was a bit slower, but they use actual clerks instead of the self-checkouts (which WM is phasing out, thank goodness). I was stuck in line behind a single mom whose little daughter kept calling me "Daddy." The woman shrugged. "She calls every male figure she sees 'Daddy.' I dunno why."
I could have told her why -- no male presence in the home, no doubt, and Big Government as Daddy -- and that she'd better be careful about her daughter's future life and choices. But I was nice and kept my mouth shut. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at November 27, 2025 07:02 AM (wzUl9) 97

Boss's reaction was basically "What? This is the first time I'm hearing about this" and he gets involved. In the end, the contract got an extension on Monday afternoon, we were given up to 8 hours of furlough that doesn't count against our PTO and all is normal again. Just 51 F. here with some brisk wind. About five degrees warmer than the prediction. Tomorrow, supposedly, it will fall to about 43 in the early morning. Good workout weather, if the wind isn't too strong.

Oh, yeah, there's that Bayou Classic college football thing happening tomorrow. Note to self: Do not go downtown for anything, not that I would nowadays, and do not go into a Waffle House or IHOP. The former here is too dangerous and the latter too crowded and noisy in the overnight hours, and too expensive as well.
Tomorrow Linda wants to go to the Dillard's Outlet store in the suburbs, and has expressed a desire for some new lipstick for her birthday (which is Monday). Neither of those sounds too horrible. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at November 27, 2025 07:12 AM (wzUl9) 106

Happy Thanksgiving, dear Hordelings! I will be heading to Mass soon and you all are on my list of people for whom I am thankful. Even if you are alone today, remember that there are people who are thankful for you, even if you've never met in person.

I haven’t been in a Dillard’s since the late 90s.
Heck, I don’t think I’ve set foot in any mall in 20 years. Posted by: SpeakingOf at November 27, 2025 07:17 AM (6ydKt) Posted by: Skip at November 27, 2025 07:18 AM (+qU29) 110

Heck, I don’t think I’ve set foot in any mall in 20 years. Posted by: SpeakingOf at November 27, 2025 *** Most of our malls are gone. There are only two major ones, one near me and one in the western suburbs, and they are doing well (though the one near me, the area's first enclosed mall, is turning into Mogadishu). The Dillard's Outlet is housed in a dead mall building in the far western area. There's a Target nearby and a few other outlying businesses. Not hard to get to and very easy to park. Maybe we can have lunch afterward at a Dot's Diner on the major boulevard south of there. And I just had to buy Sprite last night because the store had no ginger ale, at all.
Interesting phenomenon though, Skip. That photographer knows he spends a lot of time waiting around for some good thunderstorms and then more time waiting for the sprites to show up. He got some great shots out of it, though, so it’s worth the wait. Posted by: SpeakingOf at November 27, 2025 07:23 AM (6ydKt) 114

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at November 27, 2025 07:22 AM (wzUl9) There’s only one real indoor mall here now. There used to be two, but the other closed several years ago and is supposed to be redeveloped. The one that’s still open has the Mogadishu problem as well. There’s still a big Tanger Outlet shopping center that’s taken most of that business, along with Amazon and Walmart. The Edward DeBartolo company out of Youngstown, OH were pioneers in mall development. They built and developed a lot of them in the day. I was watching some show on abandoned malls, and most were their projects. The family is a major owner of the SF 49s, so they didn't have to sign up for food stamps.

What’s ironic, or maybe not, the rise of shopping malls were (more or less) partly a direct result of the fact that shopping “downtown” was untenable after 1968.
I remember vaguely that going shopping downtown was kind of a big deal. Apparently involved lots of perfume, and scarves. Mom had gloves she would wear when going on about town to buy more shoes and unmentionables. Grocery shopping. You paid for your stuff, and then went and got your car. Pull up to the delivery area and they would load your car filled with groceries. $20 was a LOT of food. Won’t even buy a pack of smokes some places now. Spouse and I are continuing to listen to David Suchet read the Bible . It is available on the net. We skipped to the NT and are listening to David Suchet read Matthew 14. about the killing of John the Baptist and Jesus feeding the 5000 and walking on water It is well done. An interesting thing to me is that David Suchet pronounces "ate" as "et" as in "they et their full."
Posted by: FenelonSpoke at November 27, 2025 06:02 AM (Nx5jP) My grandmother on my mother's side of the family also pronounced "ate" as "et." She was born in 1915 and raised in the "hollers" of West Virginia coal country. I suspect it is an older British pronunciation that was still preserved in Appalachia at the time. 121 I just went down memory lane counting department stores that were downtown when I was a kid. Sears, Penny's, Grants, two local but big stores, Wards and a real big Western Auto. Lots of clothing stores, sporting goods, and of course, Kresge's. All gone.

I think Jimmy was fond of the fedora he wears in this one. It looks to be the same hat he also wore in ]i]Call Northside 777 and It's a Wonderful Life.
