Finally got my turkey out of the oven. It's setting now.

i know most of you ate already. How was it?

18 It was fantastic, though not as great as when the DiL is here.
The lamb turned out GREAT. Almost anything cooked low and slow in a crockpot is good. The turkey was great, too - covering it in butter (with garlic and herbs in it) and bacon IS a bit of a no-brainer.

Gonna say, though, the otters....
Well, it's easier to hold hands while you sleep when your partner can't steal the covers.

31 As of right now, the turkey has been cooked and eaten. Remainder of the turkey has the whole breast chunks and thigh separated and stored in different containers, sides put away in the fridge with the turkey containers, kitchen cleaned and an apple pie warming in the oven as we speak. The fam finished watching Downton Abbey - The Grand Finale, and I'm tucking into some time in the gray boxes until I start a small amount of work prep before Friday.

As a Christian, I love Christmas and Easter, but to be honest, Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of all. Not overly patriotic or religious, so everyone can participate. People generally do the same thing all over the country, and an attitude of gratitude cuts across religious, cultural and political boundaries.

Also, my birthday is either Thanksgiving week or Thanksgiving Day, depending on the year. So yeah, this is my favorite holiday.

It's my favorite, too, for the same reasons. And, no one feels like they need to get gifts for anyone--people stress about that so much at Christmas.

You just get to gather with family or friends and feast, and be thankful in whatever way suits you.

Along with sharing a birthday, I feel the same way about Thanksgiving. When I worked we always had the Friday off too. It was a fave holiday because everybody was off so I didn't have to monitor the pager and phone too closely.

46 It was just my wife and me at home this year, but I still wanted to do something nice. So I cooked a 5 lb turkey breast and made a tikka Marsala curry sauce and jasmine rice to go with it. (We both like Indian food). Added some baked acorn squash with butter and cinnamon and a pecan pie to finish up, and it was quite nice.

After being somewhat immobilized for the past two weeks with a blown L2 / L3 disc, I'm finally able to move enough to put together a dinner that friends brought over.

57 Happy Thanksgiving, all! We're back from the suburban restaurant. We were right on time and were seated quickly. The corn bisque, turkey and mashed potatoes, and vegetables totaled up to more food than we could eat, and then the cheesecake came out and we couldn't eat more than a quarter of that. We boxed up the rest to take home, naturally.

The bill was $10 too high, and when I called attention to it, our waiter agreed and said he must have hit one button twice. He corrected it. $107 included his tip. Everybody was happy.

The furry thugs have had treats and dinner (and will get some of that turkey eventually). We're sitting here now as we usually do on a Thursday evening, with Auntie Mame on the TV and "Tin Man" upcoming on ST:TNG.

65 The odd thing is that I did not see the turkey drop episode of WKRP when it first aired. I was working a layover route for the courier company in Lafayette: I went to work at 5 pm, drove to New Orleans, slept over at the company-provided digs, and toted a new load of stuff back the next morning. Rinse and repeat until Friday morning, when I was off until 5 pm on Monday. (Got paid weekly, too, which was nice.)

The "Turkeys Away" episode aired on 10/30/78, which was a Monday. I'd have been at work.

After cooking for 3 days straight I'm tired, put pleasantly so. The turkey turned out well and everyone enjoyed the meal. Leftovers mean I don't need to cook for several days. If someone wants something besides leftovers, they can cook or go get a pizza.

I can just imagine, and I have the shivers thinking about it.

This was $42/person, so with tax and a 15% tip, $107 is about what I expected. The downtown place with the buffet Linda wanted was $60 or $70 a person, so I think I made out well.

You’re not wrong about the gravy. Cranberry sauce helps as well. But to be honest, I did enjoy his turkey. Best I've ever had. I didn't tell the Mrs. I’m not stupid.

78 Just got done with Thanksgiving dinner. We had 15 people family and friends over. We had turkey, ham, ribs, brisket and grilled salmon and 11 different sides and desserts. Way too much food so we took the leftovers to the fire station after we called to make sure they wanted the food and they said bring it over.

89 Come to think of it, I missed a lot of prime-time TV from 1976 (working nights in radio) until 1979 (the layover courier route). Only in the late spring of '79 did I get a daytime route. From what I can recall, though, I didn't miss much on the TV front.

On the AM radio in the courier vans, I could listen to Lafayette stations, Baton Rouge ones, and finally WTIX in NO. So I'm pretty much up on Top 40 of those years.

Now that sounds like a meal to give thanks for, and with.

As I said earlier today, I'm thankful for my health and my swift recovery from the minor surgery in July; for being able to retire comfortably in April; and for Miss Linda's health and companionship, and that of the cats, Stirling and Dagny.

I'm also happy that my oldest buddy, who lives in Clearwater, FL, and his wife are doing well. I'll give them a call tomorrow, after their family turmoil dies down.

I miss making everyone a mash on Christmas when I had my boarding facility. It smelled so good with bran, apples, carrots, molasses, all the stuff. And the nickers! I knew it was because they wanted food, but I preferred pretending it was for me.

Of course the next morning was bucket scrubbing, but everyone deserved a good Christmas dinner.

It's my favorite, too, for the same reasons. And, no one feels like they need to get gifts for anyone--people stress about that so much at Christmas.
