doof-hitchhiker.jpg
It's almost Thanksgiving. Get yourself home any way you can!

The Tuesday night ONT is here. So glad you could make it.

How are your Thanksgiving planning and prepping efforts going? Doing anything unusual this year? Trying any new recipes? Expecting any nefarious guests? Tell us all about it!

You Don't See This Every Day

Motorist in North Carolina tells 911: ‘I just had a bald eagle drop a cat through my windshield’

doof-cat-windshield.jpg

A motorist in western North Carolina escaped injury when the carcass of a cat crashed into the passenger side of her front windshield along a highway near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

In a call to 911, the unidentified driver on U.S. Route 74 in Swain County, near Bryson City, told a dispatcher that a bald eagle dropped the cat. Bryson City is about 65 miles (104 kilometers) southwest of Asheville.

It’s not clear if the feline slipped from the eagle’s talons Wednesday morning or was discarded simply because the big bird didn’t have a taste for it.

“You may not believe me, but I just had a bald eagle drop a cat through my windshield,” the incredulous driver said on the recorded 911 call. “It absolutely shattered my windshield.”

Check out the whole thing. I wonder if this falls into the "we've seen a thing or two" bucket that one insurance company always mentions.

Who Among You Has a Vanvera?

Come on, fess up. One of you has a 17th century fart catcher in your possession.

doof-vanvera.jpg

The vanvera was a strange accessory worn primarily by female aristocrats that allowed them to discreetly pass gas during social events.

The origins and history of the vanvera are shrouded in mystery; some sources claim it can be traced back to ancient Egypt, while others that it was inspired by Roman creativity, but there is no real evidence that this gas-muffling invention has its roots in ancient history. What everyone seems to agree on is that the vanvera was used by the aristocracy of that era, primarily women who could easily conceal it under their large, elaborate dresses.

The vanvera on display at the Sex Machines Museum in Prague consists of a leather pouch that connects to the wearer’s behind, muffling farts and containing the foul-smelling gases during social events. It can then be emptied in private by squeezing the pouch.

Guys would totally use this differently. "Dude, you shoulda smelled this one I ripped last night. Oh wait, I got it here in my vanvera - check it out!" {pooooofffff}

Was on a road trip with about 30 Mercury Cougars one time and they all did that going down the road.

Sounds awesome! Elder son of mine and I did something similar a few years ago. First Thanksgiving without the lovely late Mrs. Doof. Younger son was overseas doing his gap year thing. The 2 of us traveled to Lexington for several days. Did some stops on the Bourbon Trail. Went to the UK vs Louisville game. We made Thanksgiving dinner before we left MD and heated it up in the hotel. Watched hockey and college football and basketball, played cards, and drank bourbon. Was a fantastic time!

I usually mow the perimeter first, and spiral in towards the center. Break the yard up into random quadrangles, mow each one in turn, or mow the facing sides of two quadrangles, until the quadrangles become narrower than the gap between, and then do each one in turn.

81 I only hitchhiked once. It was when I worked in Yellowstone, and was transferring from Canyon Village to Lake Hotel after Canyon closed for the season. I was five miles down the road, heading to the Hayden valley where all the buffalo hang out. Finally I got a ride. Turns out it was a line cook who was also heading to Lake Hotel.

I never hitched again. And now that I think about it, why did my luggage get delivered but I didn't? The hell?

82 "Please tell me they only cook what they shoot themselves."

Shoot? No, they just need a rabbit stick ... throw it and knock the rabbit out (or kill it outright). I've actually tried that briefly, and came close a few times. Just a solid ~1' x 2" solid stick ... thrown hard at a rabbit, it would stop them. Or maybe that is some Indian trick, idk where I learned it. Maybe in my brief "Tracker School".

87 >>> When's the last time you saw someone hitching a ride?
Posted by: Bertram Cabot, Jr. at November 25, 2025 10:20 PM (pkeXY)

In the early 90s. I was driving to work late night, stopping at an intersection, and this chick suddenly comes up and asks for a ride home. My back seat was full of camping gear from the weekend that I hadn't cleared out. She asked what that stuff was in a quiet, "are you an axe murderer voice". Oh, that's just camping stuff, so where am I taking you, I got 10min to get to work. She told me and I dropped her off at a house then sped to work.

I think about her occasionally. I hope she makes better decisions.

Anyway, I was reading about them last week. They obviously *hate* Trump and are always putting nasty jokes about him on their outside sign, but aren't above making money off him. They have a specialty, Trump Footlong Hot Dogs. (They're each three inches long.)

But in ‘84 it built to a second peak with Jon Lovitz, Phil Hartman, Victoria Principal, Dana Carvey and others - a few more wonderful seasons til it faded again.
And the final high was the David Spade - Chris Farley - Norm McDonald era. After that, which was in the 90’s, it was never worth watching again.

If you have someone for whom it it is difficult to shop -- and they like coffee, I'd like to suggest getting them an order from Porto Rico Importing (note the spelling). If they grind their own beans, even better. They have the freshest beans around. The place moves coffee beans. The store has been in business since 1907, for whatever that's worth.

I'd go for pound sampler packs: A blend, a country and a flavor. The flavor's easy, hazelnut; it tastes great both hot and cold. For the blend I'd go with Peter's Blend. A darker roast, full-bodied yet not bitter; a good cup of coffee. I've tried some of their other blends but this one's the best. For the country, go with the Costa Rican. A medium roast, full-bodied coffee with an interesting flavor profile. (I didn't like the flavor profiles of the African coffee beans I've tried and I've only had Hawaiian Kona from the 'Asia and the Pacific' section.) You could add their New Orleans blend, as they have a good recipe using chicory; when you drink a cup, you're transported to Cafe du Monde in The Quarter. A Columbian bean is always a solid choice.

They will grind beans to your request, course, fine, etc., though I never do that as I get whole beans.

Free shipping anytime on orders over $75.

134 Evening, folken. It's been a strange day.

I remember the sequential blinker lights on the mid-'60s Thunderbirds. Though I'd forgotten that the Cougar, Mercury's answer to the T-Bird, had them too. Didn't some other car companies offer them a little later?

Earlier this year we saw a Cougar, well-restored, outside a coffee shop/bakery in a suburban town near us. I knew what it was immediately, though I hadn't seen one since the late '90s in Denver. Black, with a red interior, it was amazing in its proportions and styling. The hood and trunk each seemed twice as long as a mid-size car today, and the vehicle was low to the ground -- though it hadn't been lowered as far as I know.

The owner said it was the first year, the 1967. Not the XR-7 model, the "sporty" one with the toggle switches on the dash like the Jaguar E-Type of those days.

Murray wasn't part of the "original" cast-- he was a writer season one and came on in season two after Chevy Chase left to make movies. (Foul Play, not exactly a comedy classic.) They got into a fight when Chase returned as a guess host.

But I concede that Murray is considered part of original glory days.

People shuttled up and down the river to go back upstream or downstream pick up their cars and then drive them to the next stopping point. So people with cars at a location would pick up obvious hitchhiking float people and take them to their cars.

My grandfather hunted rabbits by that method (ball peen hammer) when he was a youth during the Depression.

He said he got one out of about every three throws. He said a hit only stunned the rabbits, so you had to run up and throttle them before they re-gathered their wits.

I have eaten rabbit stew and squirrel pot pie at his house when I was a youth. However, he could afford .22lr ammo by that time!

Why? What did you guys do? Kick Ace's dog? Sleep with his girlfriend, I mean, wth? On a serious note, why does this idiot Nuzzi even get any attention by anyone? Because she "almost" had an affair with RFKJr? I believe we have another way to say "almost had an affair" and I believe that other way is "didn't" - as in "Nuzzi didn't have an affair with RFK Jr." No, sending someone insane, bunny-boiler, stalker texts does not count as "having an affair." Also - slight point of order from the other day - I believe the Ace stye guide would dictate that instead of "James Carville's less attractive testicle," you should instead say "James Carville's LEAST attractive testicle."

Getting them out of the car, and then into the car is like prepping the Apollo astronauts for launch, because they drive and are content to be a road disaster in the making. My inlaws are probably going to Mrs B's sister's house. My MIL, AKA "the ham fairy" switched it up this year and blew off the ham and i her infinite wisdom decided to get a 25 pound turkey.... for 5 people. I'm sensing a turkey fairy in my future. Mrs B's sister got her hand operated on today, so I'm sure she'll appreciate the ease of hauling around a 25 pound turkey. Sooo, the decision is do we go there so Mrs B can help her sister since her parents aren't strong enough to lift the fart bag shown above, and we come home with a trunk load of turkey, or go to my brothers and watch the wax museum face plant into their dinner plate when they fall asleep in the middle of a sentence.

254 The sequential taillight mechanism reminded me of how 1980's Volvo's 'lamp out' module worked. It was essentially a round red plastic canister about three inches high by maybe one and one-half inches diameter with about 13 plug pins on the bottom.

Inside were three boards with small reed switches corresponding to various outside lights. Each reed switch corresponded to a set of lights - headlights, taillights, etc. Wrapped around each reed switch were the wires corresponding to the left and right bulbs of each set of lights. As long as both bulbs were lit, the magnetic field from each wire cancelled out and the switch stayed in the neutral 'off' position. If a bulb was out, no current would flow in the corresponding wire, and the magnetic field from the other wire pulled the switch to a closed position and illuminated a 'bulb out' lamp on the dash.

He lives about 1/4 mile away. I invited him for holiday meals-- Thanksgiving and Christmas-- every year for the last decade. He worked graveyard shift; hubby & I worked days... so the compromise was that "dinner" would be at 10pm to accommodate his schedule. (we usually had the next day off, so it wasn't a problem to stay up late)

Last couple of holidays, he accepted the invitations but NO SHOW. Didn't even call to cancel! I called him: ugh, still asleep... call back in an hour? Ok. An hour later: ugh, too tired...

Fk it. If he can't be arsed to drive 2 minutes, forget it. I'm DONE cooking a whole holiday meal for 3 people. Now, it's just me. Pfft. Cheeseburger!!!!!

Posted by: BarelyScaryMary at November 26, 2025 12:32 AM (ys6FW)

301 I cooked a pile of bacon today, for prep. Seems like the more turkey I cook, the more bacon I end up needing.

Plus the added joy of inviting a "gluten-intolerant" drama queen, so I have to make special stuffing with that weird gluten-free bread.

Lots on the menu, because we have 11 coming. Big-ass turkey, which I shall cook unstuffed because I don't want to have to cook it forever.

Stuffing, potatoes, gravy (I found all three gravy pitchers, thank heaven), spinach salad with bacon and honey mustard dressing, fruit salad, rolls, cranberry sauce (made that two days ago), pecan pie, pumpkin pie, apple pie, ice cream and whipped cream.

Before that, there's the pre-dinner spread for football: cheese ball, various cheeses, sliced meats, crackers of all kinds, fritos and onion dip, plus crudites, grapes, berries, apple-bacon jam I made yesterday, several different jellies I made this past fall (raspberry, grapefruit, orange, dreamcicle), ranch dip, whatever I come across in the fridge that looks good to serve.

If you walk away from my house hungry, it ain't my fault.

Posted by: BarelyScaryMary at November 26, 2025 12:32 AM (ys6FW)

When I redid the kitchen we ordered the appliances months before the cabinets came in, because it was about a year out of covid and supply was still a little shaky. There was a choice of a 2 rack dishwasher, with 56 people on a waiting list, or the 3 rack with only a few people on the list, so 3 rack it was. I wasn't sure the 3 rack was going to work, I figured to fit in 3 racks it might cramp the other 2. Well the interior was taller, which became glaring once I went to install it had almost no room under it to work. In the end it worked like a charm, the middle rack is adjustable for height, so no cramping the other racks, and Mrs b packs the shit out of that thing, and everything comes out spotless.

My mom's generation did house parties all the damned time, which was mostly an excuse to get blotto and check out the other ladies in the neighborhood. My parties usually include pistol shooting off the back porch and way too much food. I considered putting in a bunk room so folks could drink like they wanted to, but so far we settle for a few spots in the camper if things get spicy.

I did get the 16 digit one correct.

Young Dick Feynman, working at Los Alamos, showed how using such for password equivalents is not too smart. He cracked a bunch of safe combinations one time by reasoning, hey what would ol' Niels Bohr there think is some string of digits so arcane and obscure that he would think only he would be clever enough to think of?

It took him only a few tries to huess the combinations.
Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at November 26, 2025 12:27 AM (w6EFb)

Current passwords, especially when you have to use a symbol in them, makes them easier to brute force than not. They are also hard to remember for the user, so it forces them to write them down someplace accessible, which defeats the entire purpose of passwords.

A much better solution is to remember a phrase or sentence and use that as the password. Much harder to crack, unless someone knows you very well.

375 Holy shit, I just priced real silverware. 8 place settings runs from $10,500- $12,000. They can suck the fart outta my ass. 12k for spoons, jesus.

It’s why you counted the spoons if you had a questionable guest.

376 Wallace. "Rosepoint" 12 places plus servers. OUCH!

Posted by: JQ at November 26, 2025 02:13 AM (rdVOm)

I was seeing that for $4500. 60pieces. Still, better than 12-13K. My last 3 harley purchases over the last 5 years combined didn't cost that. Damn...

Shit, I'll buy a single place setting for me and they can use chinese stainless if thats the case. lol

378 Beware the "hollow ware" Rosepoint came in both regular and hollow.

380 I worked for a really rich guy back in the 90's that had a whole probably 60 by 100 foot room full of silver silverware. Mounted on the walls in cabinets and dispay cases. From all over the world. Paid people to keep on top of the polishing. Freaking weirdo who owned everything in town. I wouldn't even venture to guess how many sets.

382 Sis got the silverware, I think. (Or maybe Dad gave it to a girlfriend after Mom passed?) Oh well.

They're cheap. Well around here anyway. 4-5K can score one from the 90's with low miles.

Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at November 26, 2025 02:34 AM (snZF9)

384 A nice set of stainless is good enough for me. Not the cheap-o walmart lightweight crap that bends when ya look at it... Oneida makes good stuff. "18/8" is heavy duty and shiny, holds up in the dishwasher.

386 It's the only way, Doggo! Fancy foo foo is for fancy foo foo people, not me.

I don't even know what to do with the sets of china, from Mom & Grandma... have only served on them a couple of times and now? Not likely to happen again. Hate to just sell, but there's no Younger Generation in the family what wants any of it. Sad.

387 I need some advice

I think Darleen should pay for her own damn manny-peddies

And what the hell is that anyway?

No Tax on Tips and she wants me to pay?

Pay or not pay, that is the Question.

391 Hahaha Miklos!

Dad's gf talked him into getting mani-pedi with her... he liked it! Korean shop, yes. Dad said it was less expensive and more comfortable than going to the podiatrist.

"You come back one month! No wait longer!" Guess his toenails were a mess, LOL.

Mr. Happy is the name of our utility crow bar. It has survived many a remodel, many a demolition, and any number of other less than pleasant encounters with real property.

Captain Winky, OTOH....

393 There used to be *many* podiatrists in town... now only a few. And "nail" shops, also not so many now. Ruined by the Sniffle Scare, I guess?

I need to get my toenails evaluated by a pro. They are severely curved and get painfully ingrown. Would love to just have the things removed & start all over, I've suffered for decades.

Posted by: JQ at November 26, 2025 03:24 AM (rdVOm)

394 When working in Europe, I noticed how perfectly attired, coiffured, and manicured the younger manager from Germany types were.

Too...perfect

A girlfriend persuaded me to at least have a manicure while she got the Full Treatment.

My fingernails had never been so perfect, so clean.

This was highly instructive

I realized the Deutscher Fukkers were only there for show

Perfect manicure though
