Newer hardwood floors laid on subfloor is better! So I guess the only answer is to gut the old part of the house! Remove all of the flooring, add subfloor, then raise the ceilings because of the loss of height, then raise the second floor for the same reason, and then just nuke it from orbit!

Growing up in the US, we lived in early 20th century apartment buildings. The wooden slatted floors were super hard. They rarely splinted and only occasionally needed to be sanded and polished. I assume they were either teak or oak.
And yes, we wore shoes in the house all the time. I haven't see such quality wood installed in the last 20-30 years. Posted by: Biden's Dog sniffs a whole lotta malarkey, at November 30, 2025 02:12 PM (mOv6P) 17

If it’s in the kitchen and you have children, the cracks will eventually fill with an amalgamation of oatmeal, apple juice, cracker crumbs and other unidentifiable materials that will form a substance harder than titanium but of a color that makes it obvious there is a crack in the floor and you live in a pig sty. Regular people will look down on you and mock you behind your back.

Tack a straightedge to the floor next to the crack. Pass a router along the crack, rout it out 1/2" wide, and half the depth of the boards. Cut a strip of the same color oak, make the exact width of the routed slot, and tad thicker than the slot is deep. Glue into the slots with Gorilla Glue, use weights to press it in tight until the glue sets (overnight). Do all such faulty joints like that. Use a belt sander on the strips to bring them down to the level of the floor, then switch to a floor sander, and sand and then refinish the entire floor.

We 'can't' import gasoline because we have a state EPA mandated special blend - only made and sold here and I believe also in Wa and Ore which is why their prices are so high. So the refiners have a captive market willing to pay almost any price and still they are closing the refinery. No just selling it - shuttering it. The state must be threatening to start jailing the executives and confiscating their personal wealth for them to be willing to walk away from the pot of gold that is California. Gavin Newsom is like a poisonous jungle plant. Everything he touches is damaged or destroyed beyond survival. If he cheats his way into power on the national level, America is doomed. Mario Nawfal @MarioNawfal GAVIN NEWSOM’S $20 FAST-FOOD WAGE JUST KILLED 19,000 JOBS California’s glorious “worker empowerment” experiment is now official: since the $20 minimum hit in April 2024, the state has erased more than 19,000 fast-food jobs - over 25% of ALL fast-food jobs lost in the entire United States. Hours slashed, overtime banned, mom-and-pop stores closing or flipping to kiosks because they can’t afford the Newsom tax. Prices? Up 14.5% on average. A Combo meal that was $11 is now $18–22. But the best part: the workers still employed are making less total money because their hours got gutted harder than the wage went up. In guitar repair world, its called a splint. Here you would rip down a piece of oak the width and depth of the separation, glue it in, touch up the finish, and done forever. IF..IF it was one area. If its all over the floor then time for a new one. Usually in the old houses they had tongue and groove sub floors which are usually good enough to leave in place. Loose sections get screwed down before the new floor goes in. Tearing up old oak flooring is somewhere in the middle of ball surgery with a rusty soup can lid and stepping on your dick with golf shoes.

NR Pax, Definitely move the snowblower, lol. The weather here is strange some winters. We might have winters when snow is rare. Living in Wyoming is wonderful despite the winters. The feeling of freedom here outweighs the weather. Posted by: fourseasons at November 30, 2025 03:35 PM (3ek7K) 146
Commies making a full court press on today's MSM.
Mark Kelly: “I said something very simple and non-controversial and Donald Trump said I should be hanged, executed, prosecuted. Pete Hegseth said I should be court-martialed. How ridiculous is this? We say follow the law and this is their response? These are not serious people. We’re sticking up for the Constitution here and the rule of law” Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at November 30, 2025 03:37 PM (owKS5) 147
Yeah, gas at Costco was $4.299/gal here just last week. I blame Kalifornia.
Posted by: jim (in Kalifornia) at November 30, 2025 02:43 PM (ynpvh) Truth. TX last raised its gas tax in 1991. Posted by: Cow Demon at November 30, 2025 03:17 PM (4786I) It seems Chevron is trying to fight back a little with signs in their stations stating how Cali gas taxes are highest in the nation and a Q code thingy to use to find out more and how to fight it. I fear it's too little too late. The egg prices - we passed some initiative requiring humane conditions for chickens so I guess that forced egg prices to soar....so no hope there either. I don't think they can bring eggs in either unless the chicken farm complies. Posted by: Anonymous Rogue in Kalifornistan (ARiK) at November 30, 2025 03:39 PM (QGaXH) 148

Posted by: fourseasons I have about 3-4 more years before it happens. I'm pretty much leaving the government contracting life. My wife and I were on vacation out in Cheyenne and fell in love with the state. So when I started thinking we could retire there, she started reading articles. A few minutes later, she's laughing at one of the articles. To summarize: Pro: Beautiful area, low crime. Cons: Not a lot of diversity. Decision made. Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at November 30, 2025 03:21 PM (owKS5) That's what I don't understand. How can they not make money? They have a captive market! They can charge whatever they want. There's no one to undercut them. My only thinking is the regulators are picking the refineries off one by one with targeted regs that affect only a specific location or process causing it to price itself out of business but leaving the competition unscathed. For now. Posted by: Anonymous Rogue in Kalifornistan (ARiK) at November 30, 2025 03:46 PM (QGaXH) 151

We loved Wyoming when we were there in Aug of 2024. We trailer camped in both Grand Teton and Yellowstone then made our way across the state to Black Hills (SD) stopping in Cody and Buffalo. Overnighted near Cheyenne on the way back. Posted by: Anonymous Rogue in Kalifornistan (ARiK) at November 30, 2025 03:54 PM (QGaXH) 155

Posted by: Anonymous Rogue in Kalifornistan (ARiK) at November 30, 2025 03:46 PM (QGaXH) This. Same thing happened to independent trucking companies. Newsome passed some law that diesels manufactured pre 2010 (IIRC) could not renew their registration due to "climate" concerns. Bigger companies could buy new trucks. Smaller one's had to shut down, lay off workers, or move. Oil refineries are constantly hit with requirements to replace perfectly working hardware. Year over year, you just can't predict what's coming down the pike. So every year is another crap shoot... Posted by: Joe Kidd at November 30, 2025 03:57 PM (nbLIj) 156

Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at November 30, 2025 03:25 PM (IBQGV) Next time, if it's just the one computer and it's Windows, try this in a command prompt window: ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew As I recall, that doesn't just re-get an IP address from DHCP, it also rebuilds the routing table. It can get messed up with using multiple network adapters on the same computer, such as when adding a wireless connection. Posted by: SciVo at November 30, 2025 03:57 PM (Sy6m/) 157

our FWP at work today. A company that downloads our data had to close their site in Tahiti, France would not renew the lease. We stopped updating the Tahiti directory on our end since the site no longer exists. Turns out they were pulling TLEs they need to be able to point the right place to download data only from that directory for all 3 of their sites. Oops.

Posted by: L - No nic... at November 30, 2025 04:10 PM I don't mind the squeaks - our house is 107 years old. In the movies where the bad guy sneaks up on the family, that is not happening in my house! I can always tell who is walking where, and even if a dog is in a room where it is not supposed to be. Hot water heat is the most comfy, IMHO.
