What They Took From Us Open Thread

There's a fun but bittersweet meme called "What They Took From Us." The idea is that you show something nice that we used to have, which has now disappeared.

I first saw the meme about Pizza Hut's old distinctively-roofed buildings versus the Ikea Construction Company boxes they have now.

pizzahutold.jpg

pizzahutnew.jpg

So they idea is that you offer an overwrought lament that you've lost a major part of your cultural patrimony, but then you just link some trivial mass-market nostalgia-bait.

So here's a What They Took From Us: Insanely hot girls on TV who are on TV just because they're insanely hot and people like looking at insanely hot girls.

The left hates this meme, of course, because they hate anyone who's having fun.

They're also mostly hysterical autistic scolds so they don't understand tropes like deadpan humor.

whattheytookparody.jpg

Accurate but grubby in its fun-shaming.

8 I read a couple books on that Googie Atomic Age architecture that was popular in California for a spell. It was a beautiful gestalt of optimism, car culture, and pop sensibility that wasn't afraid to be fun. Exuberantly tacky yet elevating.

I wasn't around for its heyday but I miss it nonetheless.

10 95% of right-wing nostalgia is just women with unbelievable honkers captioned "this is what they took from us".

To be fair, plenty of women have unbelievable honkers today, too. They're just attached to 300+ lbs, rainbow-color haired beasts. Or a dude.

20 The boxy buildings are more efficient and have much better FAR than the old wide-roof (mostly single-floor) buildings. There’s a reason they took over modern design.

Is that Miami Vice clip real? Looks like they interposed much more modern shots, including of that girl. She seems to be wearing more modern clothing and hair style than in 1985.

50 I think Pizza Hut made a major marketing error in changing their outside decor. As someone who used to be on the road quite a bit, and needed to fit a meal break into the mix, I relished the times I stumbled across an easily recognizable red roof of a Pizza Hut.

It meant that I could sit down, relax for a bit; maybe even grab a salad to go with my Pizza/ or whatever. It was a fast food joint dressed up like a sit down restaurant. And when you're working on the road, that's known as an oasis from the usual crap food and noisy atmosphere you'd find at the burger depots.

Some idiot in the Pepsi Co (who I assume still owns Pizza Hut) boardroom decided to "be like the other fast food joints" and they lost their identity in the process.

Post-revolutionary (i.e. Soviet) brick walls - never straight, never properly done, looked like some 10-yr old had helped his dad with a project. Meanwhile, pre-revolutionary brick structures - normal, perfect. Got to where we'd look for the awful brick-work as a sort of game and compare notes on the shoddiest ones we'd seen that day.

In some of the imagery from Ukeistan, I have had some Soviet nostalgia, seeing the crude brick work in much of the construction.

It also seems automotive air conditioning, while available in the sixties, wasn't widely used until much later

The only thing you had to pay for was the call to Stuckey’s headquarters, so Ma Bell probably wasn’t too excited about the program, as telephone companies lost a lot of money to the HELPS project. 253 The Pizza Hut thing is the same as Cracker Barrell.

Because these corporations hire DEI morons that have NO FUCKING IDEA how the real world works, so literally all they can do is regurgitate the nonsense that their business school 'taught' them, and it all ends up with all the corporations doing the same stupid shit.

They claim they need to 'modernize' to 'appeal to modern audiences', and all they do is take away what makes the brand actually recognizable in the first place.

Stuff like Pizza Hut is so stupid. You have a franchise whose buildings are instantly recognizable. So you're gonna change it to look like every other food franchise because... why?

Same crap they did to Cracker Barrell. And Taco Bell. And everything else.

254 Are we sure that the chick on the car hood is of legal age?

Well, she's probably close to Medicaid eligibility now.

256 I don't get the "regular price, four bucks, four bucks" joke."

You dont remember the Pizza hut buy one for regular price get another for 4bucks and get another for 4 bucks?

Too much explaining already...

Just go find a "Totally tasteless jokes" paperback from the 80's

Are Leftists not into chicks?

Only if they have a girthy lady p*nis.

29 I think that's Cake Girl's Mother on that Pontiac.

Is that a Pontiac?

JFC. That's a Camaro. Pontiac had the distinct nose in the middle of the grill with the red pontiac badge in the middle. Camaro has the smaller red/white/blue emblem mounted higher on the front bumper.

Terrible f**king color on that car though and 70's vinyl tops blew *ss.

Yep, camaro. 75 or 76. We had a 77 in the driveway growing up, different bumper config.

261 What they took from us:

A race-blind individual identity.

What were the favorite kids' books in The Olde Dayes?

Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel.

Goodbye Moon.

Where the Wild Things Are.

etc.

Well, that's all gone. At Thanksgiving a distant relative showed me a kids' book (on her iPhone) that was her granddaughters' "favorite book."

What was it about?

Racial bullying and identity politics.

The lead character is a young girl who is half Native American and half black. When she is raised by her Indian mother, all the Indians are racist against blacks, and bully her, so she feels bad.

So then she runs away from home to her black father. But then all the blacks bully her because she's half Indian and they're all racist against Indians.
[con't]...

Posted by: zombie at November 28, 2025 06:50 PM (oraVG)

262

So she runs away again and ends up in a white foster family -- where they're all racist against her for being both black and Indian.

So then she feels like an outcast because everyone is racist against her.

The end.

There is no uplifting resolution -- the end is simply that she feels bad and is bullied because everyone is racist.

Note: This girl is neither black nor Native American.

267 234 Watch "Judgement at Nuremberg" just to see how gracefully Judy Garland aged. 41, looking like a rough 61. Spencer Tracy, BTW was in his early 60s and looked like Death already caught up (Jamesons whisky I imagine).

No HVAC and no modern medicine. All they had was penicillin and aspirin. Only thing a surgeon did was mend a broken leg.

268 What they also took from us: Pizza Hut once had a school program where if you read, you got a free pizza. Very beloved among my generation. Might have contributed to the literacy rate of Gen X/millennials.

Correlation vs causation: does the plummeting literacy rate also graph with the ending of the Pizza Hut reading program?

Posted by: LizLem at November 28, 2025 07:04 PM (gWBY1)

269 One of those old Pizza Hut buildings here in town. Been abandoned for probably five years now. Just sits in the frontage of a Walmart with a "For Sale" sign.

Problem with a unique building design is, it's only designed for one brand. Meanwhile they opened a new one down the road a bit. Not sure anyone goes to it, either.

270 Never ate Shakeys, but I've heard it was ok if you had never had pizza before.

I endorse this comment (willowed)! My mother took me to the first Shakey's in Tulsa, OK in 1967. She bought carrot strips so it might be a healthy dinner. So she thought!
