1970s Tank Simulator Open Thread

Computers weren't so advanced in the 1970s, so to train tank drivers, they created a miniature battlefield and had the trainees "drive the tank" through the miniature field, viewing it through a small camera that moved across the diorama.

Kind of neater than computer stuff, really.

Speaking of a tank simulator: This rifle shoots a bullet that weighs a quarter pound.

The very slow motion video of the absolute fireball this thing spits out is cool.

2 We had some very crude simulators back in the 70s when I was in the army. We had one where we would practice calling in mortar fire. They were mostly mechanical and I do not remember any with TV cameras.

So I said goodbye to ChemEng and became a computer geek, living in the comp lab.

On the bright side... I will probably get to pick up my wrapped quarter of beef tomorrow! Hubbymayhem called to ask when it might be ready and they told him it was being cut this morning then into the freezer until we go fetch it.

It worked out to about the same price as last year for about twenty pounds less total. So not getting killed by inflation or scarcity or whatever their blaming high beef prices on this week.

At one time the Swiss army operated about 100 ex german hetzer tank destroyers. IIRC they designated them G-100. They have also used various US made and french produced tanks.I have not kept up on what armor they have today if any.

There are limited areas in Schweiss that armor can be effective. Mostly near cities and the french border.

95 IPA is about 45% of craft brewery output.

What is really weird is the growth of non alcoholic beer. Never understood that one. But it’s been growing bigly the last few years.

96 Auspex, there seems to have been a real effort by a lot of companies the last several years, to make new drinks that are half alcoholic, half soft drink.

In the soft drink world, Mtn Dew Baja Blast is all the rage, to the point that Pepsi now releases every new limited-time soda as "Baja-"something. Am shocked that the alcoholic versions of Baja Blast aren't absolutely flying off the shelves.

99 I didn't see it mentioned upthread, but people of a certain age may recall the "novelty amusement machines" that pre-dated video games.

I loved those things. You'd fly a helicopter or land a spaceship on mars or fight with 20s gangsters, and the thing all played out in a glass encased representation of whatever.

Oh, the submarine simulator, where you'd look through the scope and when you fired, a light shone (representing the torpedo) down the case and, if there was a ship at the back of the box, it would sing.

Just great.

Long weekends are nice but they mess with my mental routine. It's the second day off in a row so there should be a gun thread at 6:00 CST today.

My memory may be a little hazy, but my recollection is Larry Kudlow, on his show, started referring to Atlanta as 'Hot Lanta' when reporting on Willis-Sweetdick story. Then one day he referred to 'The Big Money Show' as the 'Hot Money' show and the name stuck and they still refer to it as that......

124 IPA is great beer, but during the IPA craze the label was applied to almost anything. A true IPA is bold, bitter/hoppy, not too fizzy, and got some kick. Too many “IPAs” in today’s market are fizzy, citrusy, faggy beers.

133 The tank simulator resembles the simulators that NASA built in the 60s to train the Apollo astronauts on tasks like orbital rendezvous and docking. They also used miniatures and cameras, but controlled via a mainframe computer. The astronauts acknowledged that without their training on the simulators, they never would have been able to fulfill their missions in space.
