The white chalk on the black board symbolises the repression BIPOC mathematicians experience on a daily basis, where their lived math experience is constantly attacked by a settler colonial intepretation of so-called "objective" reality, which seeks to marginalize the Other. Diverses mathematical interpretations are equally valid, and seeking to punish so-called "wrong" answers just serves to deepen the marginalization of these voices.

Read anything written about Johnny Von Neumann, there are many, many anecdotes about him that are interesting to read, many or most of them by others who weren’t exactly slouches when it comes to math & physics - Teller, Fermi, Alvarez, the whole crew of Los Alamos longhairs.
One time a crew of folks asked him about the best way of setting up a bank of computers to crunch a bunch of numbers for some wacked out theory of determining the properties of non-linear Hilbert space (I’m just making that up, you get the idea) and he asked what the problem was. They told him, and he went into his far off look, mumbling to himself. A few seconds later “That won’t work. Here’s the answer”. He did the calculations in his head. This is an effective painting. He captures the moment with the boy's posture and concentration, alone and without support. It's not panic, just trying to remember a new skill, in this case the multiplication tables. But the ragged clothes and short, institutional haircut adds some tension to the scene. I can't tell what medium was used. It looks to me like pastels. I looked at some of the artist's other paintings on his Wiki page and didn't care for them but this one is much better.
BTW, it took a few seconds for me to remember 7 times 9. Guess I'm out of practice. Posted by: JTB at November 26, 2025 09:57 AM (yTvNw) 122

Other words for it were aftercrop (1560s), aftergrass (1680s), lattermath, fog. The figurative sense is by 1650s. Compare French regain "aftermath," from re- + Old French gain, gaain "grass which grows in mown meadows," from Frankish or some other Germanic source similar to Old High German weida "grass, pasture." When the summer fields are mown, When the birds are fledged and flown, And the dry leaves strew the path; With the falling of the snow, With the cawing of the crow, Once again the fields we mow And gather in the aftermath. He's looking at his cheat sheet to decipher how to solve the problem using the new Common Core method.
the Common Core standards introduced in 2010, emphasizes conceptual understanding over rote memorization of procedures. This approach encourages students to break down multiplication problems into smaller, more manageable parts using visual and conceptual tools. A common technique is the "box method" or area model, where numbers are decomposed into their place values (e.g., 35 becomes 30 and 5, and 12 becomes 10 and 2), and then multiplied in a grid format. The partial products from each cell of the grid are then summed to find the final result. For example, multiplying 35 by 12 involves calculating 30×10=300, 30×2=60, 5×10=50, and 5×2=10, which are then added together to get 420. Jerry back when he was a poli sci prof at Pepperdine, came up with two dimensions of economic and social differences in political ideology. Think it was published in a journal at the time but certainly he would discuss it throughout his life. The Right in Euroland has a specific meaning rooted in history based on blood and history of a nation and usually included preservation of royalty and state religions when those were a thing. Less useful on the right in the US because of the whole royalty and state religion thing being dumped but often there is a related term of Heritage Americans aka descendants of the original English/Scots/Irish/German settlers versus immigrant latecomers in the 1850's and later. Some argue for a creed based nation of ideals but that has the problem of defining exactly what the creed to be preserved contains. Nowadays, at least in the US, it is easier to define the Right by what it is not--the Left. Posted by: whig at November 26, 2025 10:24 AM (WDjG6) 221

What time should I arrive? Posted by: Archimedes at November 26, 2025 10:22 AM (Riz8t) Probably as the Macy's parade is finishing up - that's when the lunch tray goes out (and no one eats anything else til dinner with the tray). Spouse picked Italian for the theme, so we have proscuitto (for me), speck, and salami with some roasted tomato mozzarella and 4 other cheese slice things (I don't eat it, so can't remember what they are), and some varied crackers (and now the bread, too). Then the pumpkin dip with apples, asian pears, pineapple, and clementines. I put out 2 trays (and take my meat from the pack, so I can just dairy up the one) - one the proteins and one the fruit and dips, and it works for 7... I do try to spread the "cooking" and "eating" nice stuff all day, so kids get good food memories from dawn to dusk (and dessert is lightest b/c no one really wants it)... 223 Gentile? I heard of Gramsci.
Posted by: no one ======= Gramsci was a Communist (not fascist like Gentile) but argued the best way to rectify Marx's mistake. Marx proposed economic classes as the way to promote revolution; Gramsci argued post WWI where Commie revolutions largely failed including places like Germany that Marx assumed would be at the forefront, that in the industrialized West, a long march through institutions was necessary including social organizations. Basically seize the heights of the socioeconomy of states rather than rely on a revolution by the proletariat. Posted by: whig at November 26, 2025 10:29 AM (WDjG6) 243

--- Right, because on this side of the pond, we're anti-monarchal from the get-go. Hereditary rule doesn't even enter the question, once the union got going. The "Right" of the French Revolution weren't even that traditional, they just reasoned that offspring--especially the very young--of the nobles don't need to be killed for having been born noble. For that they were called "counterrevolutionaries". People really need to realize that the left becoming more extremely selective and violent is an illustratable historical pattern. People really need to realize that the left becoming more extremely selective and violent is an illustratable historical pattern.
Posted by: Axeman ======= I think the violence comes from a loosely knit class of people that want to rule others but don't have the connections, money, or power to pull it off via those means. So they rely on the crudest forms of control which is by violence. And then like starving dogs, they fight among themselves for scraps of power when they take over a state. Only evil and/or corrupt people would want to rule over unwilling subjects by violence. Even most kings were constained by the idea of Christianity in the West. Commies have no such scruples because to them, common people are akin to potato chips. They can always make more (an error turns out but that is the way they feel). There is no "far right". "Far right" is a label the left and imposters on the right attach to positions that tend to discard "right" positions while attaching things the right doesn't believe in so as to cause confusion and derision.
Posted by: Crusader ====== Nominal measures of Left and Right that some activists believe can be calibrated into an ordinal measure similar to a number line where a theoretical zero would indicate a moderate and then each additional notch such as center left, left, far left and similar to that on the right. Is this a thing? Because this dounds like a thing.
Without diving deep yet into the Hong Kong fire that's happening right now November 26, 2025, I have a couple thoughts. 1. Wrapping your building in flammable materials (bamboo scaffolding) for construction work in 2025 is a wild choice, especially in a high rise. 2. Wrapping multiple high rise buildings within feet of each other in flammable materials is an even worse choice. 3. Dried bamboo burns incredibly well as it is, but the addition of spacing for the scaffolding from floor to floor likely allowed for greater airflow allowing for a much more efficient burn and travel up the exterior of the building. 4. The death toll currently stands at 14 and I can almost guarantee that will rise, potentially by a lot. The hope here is fire crews in Hong Kong realized they were dealing with an exterior fire spreading up the building and had the capability and awareness to sound a general evacuation, especially of the other buildings before they ignited. 5. This could be Grenfell all over again. Except multiplied by 4. Posted by: rickb223 at November 26, 2025 10:57 AM (rYMt6) 364

It takes longer to type it up than to do it on paper, but the shortcut is (assuming that curly digit is a 9 - I recognize the European 7):
249 x 87 = (250 - 1) x (90 - 3), = 250 x 90 - 1 x 90 - 3 x 250 - 1 x (-3), = 22500 - 90 - 750 + 3, 22410 - 750 + 3 ——- 21663 249 x 87 = 21,663 Posted by: NemoMeImpuneLacessit at November 26, 2025 11:02 AM (tWxgu) 381

Put yourself back in 2009. There is a special election in your district, which voted for Obama by double digits.
You would be voting for anyone with an R next to their name. They could be calling for an armed invasion of Mars to take out the Martians that live there. And you’d be like whatever, he’s not a Democrat. Where do I send the donation to his campaign? That’s what a lot of people today feel like regarding Trump. The AWFL in TN could say that about anything and it doesn’t matter. The election is about Trump and nothing else. The seven is slashed, like they do in the military (and like I still do).
Posted by: Bulg I could understand doing it on a 6 or 9, but what is the purpose on a 7? Posted by: rickb223 at November 26, 2025 09:43 AM (rYMt6) Distinguishes it from a 1 with the little doohickey on top. And the doohickey distinguishes the 1 from a lower-case L. And a capital i has serifs so it doesn't look like a lower-case L Because humans are lazy and like writing a vertical slash for a bunch of stuff, we have to complicate stuff. It feels real but from a past age. Kid probably walked to school. He has to come up to the board and do this in front of the class so he is serious. The painting tells a story.
Posted by: Sharon(willow's apprentice) at November 26, 2025 09:46 AM (t/2Uw) I get a definite Eastern Europe vibe from the clothes and the odd number-writing. He walked to school, in the snow. One story bit further, there's probably a cork rifle in the coat room, used to protect little Piotr from the wolf on his way to and from school. In certain styles of handwriting, 1 is written with an upstroke (see, there is still a vestigial bit of one in the typeset version) so as to get the ink flowing in the nib of your pen: it serves a purpose, which is why the seven must have a stroke - usually a horizontal one, but I have seen diagonal strokes as here, particularly in German influenced cultures.

So what happens when you want a strong military? Well, then you're a "fascist", a "nationalist", even though the one national function you think we ought to have is one laid out in the "200-year-old piece of paper"
that still gets in the way of the "progress of the state". Posted by: Axeman ======= All of the social sciences are replete with bad data. That being said, never throw away data because it is bad--figure out a way to use the bad data in a probabilistic sense so as to separate the gold from the dross. So the lazy fascist smear by leftists does not mean that fascism itself as a concept is invalid. Same with right or left as nominal markers of ideology. It is whether or not the data exists to support or not support the concept as applied to specific cases.
