I was planning on writing about my new Win11 notebook and how decent it is once you go through resolving all the privacy leaks.
So... I connected my new Win11 and old Win10 notebooks with a type C cable and expected to easily copy files from the old to the new. You would think it should be easy. So far no success. Scouring the Internet but so far no suggestions are working. I may have to resort to external drive backup and restore. Idiots! Yeah, basically that doesn't work, unless both USB-C ports are Thunderbolt / USB4. Then you can share files over Ethernet over Thunderbolt. External drive is the simplest answer. Posted by: Pixy Misa at November 23, 2025 04:14 AM (BLOW1) 11

I fuese this qualifies as Tech. Looks like Elon was having some fun for about an hour yesterday. You would think it should be easy. So far no success. Scouring the Internet but so far no suggestions are working. " There's a utility in Linux called "Warpinator" for just this purpose. Apparently it's liked so much that someone made a Windows version of it called "Winpinator": https://winpinator.swisz.cz/ That might be worth a try. Install on both computers and see how it does. I've already cracked out the installer files here on a windows box and scanned them with Kaspersky - no alerts. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at November 23, 2025 05:29 AM (O7YUW) 34
@Biden's Dog: Warpinator works here over an ethernet network. I'm not sure about your idea of going USB-C to USB-C or if it would recognize that data path as valid.

I woke from a dream where, in an office, I was trying on a laptop to copy a numerical authentication code on the screen so I could paste it into the proper box. But the screen was not flat. It had little peaks in it, so the mouse (for some reason I had to roll the mouse physically across the *actual* screen surface) could not pick up all the numbers. Almost as if it were *designed* to fail.
Then a storm blew up outside my office, and we all had to disconnect our computers lest they be blown out by an electrical surge. So I was going to have to start all over on this authentication business. Then Stirling leaped across me, kicking me with a hind leg, and I was awake. And kinda glad of it. Second cup of black juice after feeding the furry thugs. Better.
We watched the 2025 Superman on DVD last night, and I enjoyed it. It does have the feel in places of the old Silver Age DC comics, with Superman's robots at the Fortress of Solitude (though that term is not used in the movie), and the co-starring roles for Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, and Mr. Terrific. It sports a good sense of humor where appropriate, and "heart" scenes (such as with Pa Kent) too. Plus there is a new take on the mythos, that Lois and Clark are already dating and *she knows his secret.* And Superman's outburst to Luthor, "I am as human as you are!", is very effective. Corenswet as Superman is not in Christopher Reeve's class as an actor, but he is close. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at November 23, 2025 06:11 AM (wzUl9) 48

I’ve read theories that the French Revolution in 1789 happened, in no small part, due to a near-famine brought about by the previous century of colder temps and wetter weather. I think the Year Without A Summer was the beginning of the end for the Little Ice Age. Rivers in the northern U.S. regularly froze during the winter at that time. Think of the famous painting of Washington crossing the Delaware, the river was full of ice. We don’t see that near as often these days. Posted by: SpeakingOf at November 23, 2025 07:11 AM (6ydKt) 88

Back around 2010 I suggested on Twitter that if the left was so worried about global warming they should build a huge blind set to put in orbit so they could block out sunlight when needed.
It was a complete joke, of course, but the left has been turning satire into reality for about 15 years so it’s on brand to try to come up with a way to block out the sun. There are a few companies coming out with ideas to do that with various methods. It’d be nice if they’d try to figure out second, third, fourth and Nth order effects before trying these fever-dream ideas of theirs, though. The strange and totally real plan to blot the Sun and reverse global warming.
I love the irony in all of this. "blot out the sun" is literally the Scriptural language for apocalyptic/doomsday imagery. they think that "global warming" is an existential threat, but according to the prophets Ezekiel, Joel, the Apostle John and the Almighty God: • "I will cover the sun with a cloud and the moon shall not give its light...all the shinging lights in the heavens I wlll darken over you" • "... the sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood...", • "The sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the whole moon became like blood" • "Immediately after the tribulation... the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light..." Just like the Left tries to implement all of the evil stuff in the book "1984" and "Animal Farm", they also want to replace God and do the judgement part from Holy Scriptures. @127 pawn, wouldn't be surprised to see manslaughter stick. The trooper didn't get permission from higher ups to do a pit move and there was a child in the car. If you know the NYS Thruway there are toll booths where the driver could have been stopped.
However a lot of people are ticked at the father for not complying. Taking off at 100mph with your child in the car ignoring the danger to other drivers on the road helps the cop. Recognizing Joseph’s wisdom, Pharaoh placed him in charge of Egypt’s grain reserves and tasked him with preparing the nation for the upcoming drought.
So Joseph implemented hard core Communism, stole the grain, used slave labor to build the silos, then during the seven famine years sold the grain back to those he stole it from taking their money, the next year he forced them to trade their assets for food, and the next year he enslaved them for food. And he was f'ing proud of the fact that he used insider information and a crisis to steal all of the assets and enslave an entire country. Joseph was an ultra-tyrant and probably one of the worst dictators in world history. Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at November 23, 2025 08:35 AM (a4flb) 156

536 AD is considered The Worst Year To Be Alive and it was a result of massive volcanic eruptions in either Iceland or Central America.
I recall seeing a fascinating report on that a few years back. One account from a Byzantine writer said that all crops failed, that the sun only shown for a short time even at midsummer, and that it was pile and shrouded, barely brighter than the moon. That fueled the great migration from Central Asia east, which completely overturned Europe. Posted by: Tom Servo at November 23, 2025 08:42 AM (/ZNPI) 175

couple small problems with cooling the Earth: cold currently kills 10x as many people as heat, and about 1/3 of the planet is too cold for human habitation
but the 3I/Atlas alleged comet is getting weirder... the non-gravitational acceleration since it arrived puts it right at the edge of Jupiter's Hill radius (similar to a Lagrange point) in 2026 this is either the ideal trajectory for a technological object to insert objects into Jovian orbit or some crazy cosmic coincidence but all the scientists shouting "we're 100% sure it's natural!" are starting to remind me eerily of COVID Posted by: TallDave at November 23, 2025 08:43 AM (lLLli) 179

Johnny Von Neumann, a pretty smart feller, was open to the idea that humans may affect the climate, but he proposed methods of altering the climate to increase agriculture by warming. He thought it would be expensive, but he thought “painting” the polar regions black would absorb more sunlight, something like that. Point being there was a lot of thought given to weather modification in those days. One concern was weaponizing these methods, and denying an enemy country or continent the ability to grow crops. Seeding clouds with silver-iodide is about the extent I ever heard of weather modification with inconclusive results as far as that goes.

I'm surprised Krakatoa didn't cause a global winter when it went off, but I'm not aware of major problems after that volcano blew.
—- ? It caused the “summer that never was” in North Americs, if I recall my history correctly, and I may not. Posted by: Common Tater at November 23, 2025 08:51 AM (SpYDH) 191
Krakatoa
The eruption caused a volcanic winter.[24] In the year following the eruption, average Northern Hemisphere summer temperatures fell by 0.4 °C (0.72 °F).[25] The record rainfall that hit Southern California during the water year from July 1883 to June 1884 – Los Angeles received 970 millimetres (38.18 in) and San Diego 660 millimetres (25.97 in)[26] – has been attributed to the Krakatoa eruption.[27] There was no El Niño during that period as is usual when heavy rain occurs in Southern California,[28] but many scientists doubt that there was a causal relationship.[29][failed verification] Posted by: Notsothoreau at November 23, 2025 08:52 AM (+mUZM) 192

I'm on the fence on getting a new GPU now or waiting until next year to see what Nvidia does with the a 5000 series Super refresh, and to see how the prices shake out with the 9070 XT. I just shelled out a lot of dough for a new monitor and I'm hesitant to buy a new GPU right now, but the prices on GPUs are the best I've seen all year. we'll learn more as the alleged comet gets closer but the weirdnesses are multiplying
https://avi-loeb.medium.com/ anomalies-of-3i-atlas-organized-by-likelihood-af20fb3b6d21 perhaps the WOW! signal was intended to initiate a braking request unfortunately we don't have a terawatt braking laser, or even a gigawatt comm laser, so it decided to just drop some things off in Jovian orbit it's possible this is a relatively low-tech starseed (fission drive) such as we could have built as far back as the 1950s it might not even know we're here, if it can't detect our satellites and radio signals we should probably be trying to lase the alleged comet with communications, in case anyone is listening of course the most likely possibility is still "great big coincidence" because there's probably not any other life within our observable universe but at the very least this is a very strange interstellar object we shall see Posted by: TallDave at November 23, 2025 10:42 AM (lLLli) 203
As a ‘global warming’ constituent, CO2 has a negative feedback (as do most natural processes), and is largely if not completely tapped out. The earth is turning greener with CO2 in the 400ppm range, and most of the polar ice is now growing, not shrinking. There has been no measurable change in sea levels. All this is to say there is no climate change crisis, and there never was.
What frightens me is that these people who have gotten massive financial backing from billionaires who seek population reductions may actually believe these solar shield schemes are necessary. When they start doing this, a lot of people are going to starve to death or be killed in the food scavenging that follows. Most of the global events in the past that mimic this solar project have one thing in common: they were followed by bitterly cold winters and “year without a summer” descriptions. Imagine two or more years without a corn or wheat harvest in the US. Posted by: Advo at November 23, 2025 10:49 AM (jO4mz) 204
Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at November 23, 2025 08:04 AM (a4flb) I was thinking of this also. Now please do the similarities between the 12th Imam emergence and the Antichrist from Revelations. Posted by: Advo at November 23, 2025 11:04 AM (jO4mz) 205
I had to stop reading that Politico article. First off, it’s Politico, but second, it’s a truly frightening thought that some people might actually try to launch particles into the atmosphere to “dim the sun “. The earth isn’t suffering from natural changes in the climate (no, SUVs are not causing it, that’s ridiculous), so it’s better we puny humans don’t try to mess with Mother Nature, probably killing millions of people. Nature accomplishes that all on its own, we shouldn’t try to help it out.

Early 90s game console? The Atari VCS hit the market in September of 1977. The most recent hardware emulated in the new handheld is from the early 80s, The Atari 7800. Other machines released later were still using the chip set from the 1979 Atari 8-bit computers. Some of the games in the 'Recharged' series on the handheld are native to the ARM SOC.

Before we start blocking out the sun's energy could we maybe determine what the optimum global average temperature should be and then compare it to our best guess as to what the global average temperature is currently?
And then proceed from there. I think there is reason to think we are still below the optimum temperature for the planet. Posted by: Ralph at November 23, 2025 07:09 PM (8WZD4) 211
