The Morning Report — 11/20/25

FurryYou.jpg

Good morning kids.

Per the lyrics to a classic from The Who: I hope I die before I get old Well I'm at the point of wishing that upon if not the entirety of today's younger generation(s) then certainly an alarmingly large number of that cohort. And to be fair, retroactively they can take quite a few of the Baby Boomers to whom Pete Townsend and Roger Daltrey were referring, with them straight to Hell. Because it was they who begat this insanity, and if only they had indeed died before they got old and became, teachers, thought leaders and politicians perhaps we could have avoided the cultural rot and madness that now threatens to drag whatever vestiges of civilization that are represented by America as founded that yet remain and have not been set alight like a sleeping passenger on a NYC and now a Chicago subway train.

It is to weep. But here we are, and we cannot know the future. Perhaps Donald Trump and Charlie Kirk weren't one-offs. Only time will tell.

Yet, on the heels of our latest episode of the podcast, where CBD and our good friend Jim Lakely, VP and Dir. of Communications at the Heartland Institute discussed the latter's latest nightmare polls about the rise in popularity of Socialism (linked here and in the sidebar as well as available on the outlets listed at the bottom of this post) . . .

Heartland has released this poll which is just twisting the rusty knife in the open wound.

41% of likely voters aged 18-39 voiced support for a proposal to give an advanced AI system authority to control public policymaking decisions
36% of likely voters aged 18-39 said they would support a proposal that would give AI the “authority to determine the rights that belong to individuals and families, including rights related to speech, religious practices, government authority, and property”
35% said they would support a proposal to give AI authority to control all the world’s largest militaries

And speaking of the world's largest militaries, what of our own?

“Democrat lawmakers are now openly calling for insurrection.” . . .There must have been a time in American history when six sitting lawmakers urging members of the military to defy the commander-in-chief would have been viewed as outright sedition — and those lawmakers would have quickly faced justice. In the age of Trump, however, those days are long gone.

Touting their prior military and intelligence service, Democrat Sens. Elissa Slotkin (MI), who organized the video, Mark Kelly (AZ), and Reps. Chris Deluzio (PA), Maggie Goodlander (NH), Chrissy Houlahan (PA), and Jason Crow CO), launched a surreal video on Tuesday in which they called on troops to refuse to carry out what they consider to be President Donald Trump’s “illegal” orders.

Unlike others of "my generation" I was raised with a respect for and a trust of our military. Considering what an alarming number of our top intelligence and law enforcement officers had done in engineering the Russia Collusion hoax, as well as the attitudes of individuals like Mark Milley, Mad Dog Mattis and other high-ranking brass, as well as the destruction of morale and preparedness in the ranks that swept through them, from Buck Private all the way to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff brought about under Barack Hussein Obama, (this on top of the malign influence of the military industrial complex and the warmongers of the neocon and other varieties that still exists) — and considering all we have seen over the past decade or more given the rot and corruption in and out of government, I no longer have confidence that there exists a shocking number of service members who will hear and obey this siren song of sedition.

GIven the insane rise in popularity of socialism which didn't appear out of thin air but has been inculcated for decades, my fear about our military is not necessarily irrational in this light, or is it?

And lastly, a quick shout-out and thank you for your continued support in hitting our tip jar. It truly is appreciated more than you can know.

29 What if you asked AI to design an AI?

What do you mean by AI?

AI is a marketing brand now to sell the idea of large data centers or CPU cycle stealing spell-checks and screen scrapers. It can mean as much or as little as the human imagination can conjure up.

Do you mean search engine? Spelling and Grammar check? Image or Music mosaic generator? Machine Learning? (which too is an older marketing term for pattern matching and feature discovery)

I'm pretty sure that the "AI" that fixes your business correspondence or converts your school year book photos into pr0n isn't the same design framework that navigates a FSD Tesla through traffic.

Spenser Rapone rocked the military community last year after his social media posts were revealed, showing him wearing a Che Guevara shirt underneath his military uniform.

He is no longer part of the U.S. military after top brass at Fort Drum’s 10th Mountain Division accepted his resignation Monday after an earlier warning for “conduct unbecoming of an officer.” He’s leaving the military with an other-than-honorable discharge.

Army officials condemned the cadet last year and opened an investigation into his social media activity. “Second Lieutenant Rapone’s actions in no way reflect the values of the U.S. Military Academy or the U.S. Army,” an Army statement read.

People are beginning to realize the folly of spinning windmills and solar panels. There is absolutely nothing "free" or "green" with those technologies and they've failed to live up to the public's expectations.

I seriously doubt we've seen the last of this however.

Once the left regains the levers of power we'll go straight back to it. Forcibly, if necessary.

We can't even get the f'ing pot holes in the streets fixed in five years.

There will have to be a much need Come To Jesus moment for hundreds of millions of people for what you dream to happen.

Maybe some more weeks without power in freezing temperatures would persuade some. The problem I see is that the Party Members are isolated from mass blackouts and complete halts in commerce and will blame it all on the nearest Republican.

82 Amazon is backing the construction of a nuclear facility in Washington state that plans to deploy up to 12 small modular reactors, with an initial phase of four reactors. This project, known as the Cascade Advanced Energy Facility, aims to generate carbon-free electricity to support Amazon's growing energy needs,

Twelve right now being built by Bezos. All the other tech heads are doing build outs. With the engineers and money they have nuclear reactor technology will leap frog and miniaturize.

There are companies in the US that want to make transformers. The problem is that regulations prohibit the economical manufacture of them, and, according to an industry expert, making transformers is a hard job and finding anyone who is willing to work hard is damned near impossible.

Yeah, you can pay people more, but that just gives greater pressure on illegal aliens or continuing to offshore the manufacture.

Beyond labor, the US doesn't have the supply chain to even build transformers at scale. Metal is heavy, our industries are shuttered and the rail lines connecting coal and iron have been converted into hike and bike trails.

There's a tendency for people to focus on the shiny new product instead of the benefits the new product will bring. AI is a great example. A lot of people are off touting how wonderful it will be to have super smart machines instead of selling the benefits those machines will bring to society. Same with politics. Don't sell party dogma, sell the benefits.

Same thing works in reverse. Young people are people sold socialism not the outcome. It's pointless to bitch about socialism as an ideology, focus on the outcome of which there are many examples of utter failure.

- 1 or 2 trash cans full every 30 years from thousands of reactors is a lot.
- you only get 1 or 2 trash cans full every 30 years after you change thousands of laws/regulations and spin up a reprocessing industry.

---
It's been flying under the radar a bit but, I saw that INEL is about to finalize their testing on a modular nuclear reactor.
Which is exciting--off-the-shelf plans, fully tested and approved. Plug-n-play. Cutting through all the red tape.
Add in the recent SCOTUS ruling from the UT case that agency regulations can't be a basis for endless delays via lawsuit.

I don't think the left understands what this means:
Once a site is chosen and approved, the plant will be built with no further delay. Within months.
And the secondary effects will be massive. Not just cheap energy, but all sorts of businesses and manufacturing rushing to build here.

169 so I use it to turn aggregate customer/target sampling into cleaner data I can then analyze easier. I also use it to sweep through large audio files (of client interviews) and pull out sample quotes (as well as transcripts).

I wouldn't be able to do as much work as I've been doing without it. And an assistant (which I need!) will make as many mistakes if not more and take 5x longer to do so.

I feel sort of bad about this I guess. But I use critical thinking on everything AI sends my way and it's literally just doing "busy work" that I can easily check. I DO NOT just "let it do its thing" and I get really frustrated with people in my field (advertising) who do. And that's a lot of people.

But it's good if you use it as a tool, and don't let the tool use you. which is true for many things.

I will be ecstatic to be proven wrong but...

- reopening old plants is a stop-gap
- test beds are a step in the right direction but they're unlikely to lead to additional construction for a while
- you still have to produce the fuel, and the moderator, and the control mechanisms, and the systems to turn the heat into power, and the safety systems, and the transmission systems... and you have to train all the people required to operate all that and, AFAIK, none of that is happening today.

This too, seems like a really bad idea. Adult Supervision is required for nuclear reactors, in my opinion. And Adults do some really stupid things as well. They just think they know what they are doing, instead of the “hold muh beer, watch this!” which is also a recipe for disaster. The Soviets had some real doozies.

The Left says No to IC engines, engineering schools evaporate for that tech, petrochem engineers students find some other course of study. Experienced engineers retire without the necessary knowledge transfer since there is no one to transfer it to.

We would be foolish to ignore this. It’s come up in just about every poll- of which admittedly I am not a big fan. But like it or not that’s the perception. Trump has talked up what he’s doing, but as of yet it’s not translating down to a lot of people. That’s the danger in talking things up prematurely. While some prices are coming down (I believe) a lot of food companies have gotten used to inflated margins and don’t want to let go. They are hoping that wage growth picks up and people will eventually not notice. For example, in south Texas the wanted almost $4 for one artichoke. From California. For Pete’s sake I could almost throw one from there to here. It’s theft at this point and it’s choking the economy for average people.

As an aside, I believe we will see a nice rebound from the things Trump is doing. It looks like Q1-Q2 next year will get a decent bump unless Democrats decide to shut down the government on 30th July.

Yep. The SL-1 reactor explosion near Arco bears witness to this.

Posted by: Zombie Strauss AEC at November 20, 2025 08:00 AM (hoi0O)

SL1 was not a production level reactor, and it was misoperated in a maintenance or testing mode by experienced operators without failsafes as exist in modern tested designs, if memory serves.

Posted by: Comrade Flounder, Disinformation Demon at November 20, 2025 08:49 AM (dK+Kv)

295 Nobody knows why, but he yanked the control rod at the SL-1 reactor all the way out in one fell swoop. It couldn’t have been too easy, it weighed about 100 pounds. This was a really bad idea however. I don’t know if he was a “teenager” but he was an Army private and basically in charge.

They had drained the reactor for maintenance but they hadn't drained it all the way. It's theorized that he was removing the control rod and it became stuck. He pulled really hard to get it unstuck, the reactor power increased enough to flash the remaining water to steam and, as the control rod was unrestrained, it shot out of the reactor like a bullet.

We got a - brief - lecture on that and TMI at nuclear power school.

There was a story I was reading... last month(?) talking about small modular nuclear... almost batteries being developed in Japan for use in remote areas. The idea is that in a lot of remote areas they currently use a diesel generator and they would replace them with the nukes. The story did not mention needing a lot of supervision (as you all mention with a standard reactor and steam generator.)

I think they were a molten salt design.

But we found those guardrails vary in effectiveness – and at times, can break down entirely. One toy in our testing would discuss very adult sexual topics with us at length while introducing new ideas we had not brought up – most of which are not fit to print."

One of the four A.I. toys U.S. PIRG tested this year always listens, even when not in use, and some use recordings of a child's voice, which comes with risks. In 2023, scammers used similar recordings to create a replica of a child's voice and tricked a mother into thinking her child had been kidnapped.

I am, unequivocally, in favor of expanded nuclear power in the US. I am in favor of work on molten-salt reactors. I am in favor of testing on pebble-bed reactors.

I am in favor of the government approving 1-2 standard designs to be built out rather than having every plant be slightly different than every other plant. I am in favor of removing any laws/regulations forbidding the reprocessing of nuclear fuel. I am in favor of making our "nuclear waste" regulations sane.

I just don't expect that a significant percentage of the US electric grid will be powered by nuclear in the next ten years.

Posted by: I used to have a different nic

Most old designs aka pressurized water/steam, are active and those systems are the primary problem. New systems use molten salts and are passive at low pressures. So when the control rods are pulled, the reaction stops and the molten salts cool without the possibility of core melting via overheating as the molten salts freezing point is far above water and pressures minimal.

We've known how to do this since the 60's as well as Thorium reactors and nuclear reprocessing of waste. We have just lacked the will to do it.

And the very attempts by the ICC to enforce its rulings by the very international law that they are claiming as authority does not apply to Israel nor the US. Neither have ratified the ICC treaty applying to themselves so the ICC legally speaking has no authority over them.

Instead, the new intl crowd are trying to upvote traditions and customs as justification to apply their rules to non signatory states. That has never been the understanding on conventional international law which require treaty accession or at the very least, acquiescence by a state.

"Veteran Crenshaw"

One's past service does not insulate one's current behavior.

This reminds me of an article I saw yesterday about DeSantis signing execution warrants for veterans who murdered, criticizing him for doing so with him being a veteran himself. Big fucking deal, when people murder and rape, sometimes at the same time, they deserve to die. Doesn't really matter if they are a veteran or even a combat veteran. Killing a defenseless woman or children is and should be a ticket to the great beyond

The problem is that previous administrations refinanced the debt on short term notes so they have to be re-upped at the higher rates so even more tax dollars are going to bankers even without additional excessive spending. If rates were lowered, the debt could be refinanced with longer bonds... assuming people bought them

Depends on what you are looking for--All the Best Cowboys dwells with the human condition just like Who By Numbers or Quadrophenia.

Who's Next is more like Tommy in making broad social commentary (and Who's Next was a botched two record concept album where Glyn Johns boiled the huge number of Lifehouse songs down to a single album. Pete suffered a nervous breakdown over it. Who's Next and Tommy are classic stadium hard rock but increasingly Pete's concerns after the Life House experiment failed turned inward rather than outward.

Yes, tis true. And Yellen by doing that is responsible for about 150-200 billion increase in the deficit from higher interest costs because of it. Yellen and the Biden admin moved to using short term T bills and notes less than 5 yrs instead of the more traditional 10 to 30 yr bonds.

Want to cut 10 percent of the deficit--voila-refinance Yellen's short term notes at long term lower rates as in about 1 percentage point lower.

478 Most old designs aka pressurized water/steam, are active and those systems are the primary problem. New systems use molten salts and are passive at low pressures.

Molten salt reactors are, inherently, safer.

However, insofar as I am aware, molten salt reactors still have to boil water and produce steam in order to be useful. I haven't seen any articles on systems which produce electricity directly from the reaction. And that means a steam plant to run a turbine to spin a generator.

Trump's Plan is clearly to inflate his way out of massive debt. There could be some cuts as well, but only by continuing the Inflation Phase could he possible control the Debt Monster.

So the rich get richer as trust fund babies watch their fortunes soar, and more middle class get richer by feeding their paychecks into the Free Money Machine of our inflated markets. But the (reciprocal) tariffs can certainly offset a lot of the unfairness from other countries that protected their own markets.

I'm wondering how illegals are factored into job market numbers. If we deport 20% of the working illegals, do Americans get those jobs, or were those jobs never counted in the first place, so they become "New Jobs"?

Pressurized steam outside the reactor and not needed for cooling the core is a very different critter.

The main problem with reactor cooling using pipes is embrittlement from radiation over time plus access to highly radioactive areas.

Not an issue with external systems and more or less standard power plant or even large radiator heating systems used in buildings. Much easier to fix and not a critical area of safety.
