Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Tuesday Overnight Open Thread - November 18, 2025 [Doof]![]() Big Internet Outage Earlier Today ![]() ![]() Rendering of the new Key Bridge design Commuters, residents, and business owners waiting for a new Key Bridge will have to wait longer than previously though… and construction will cost two to three times as much. The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) released new cost and timeline estimates one day before the National Transportation Safety Board released the failures that led the M/V Dali to lose power, strike the bridge, and cause the deadly collapse. MDTA says it is working with the Federal Highway Administration to “quickly and safely” advance the rebuilding of the bridge that people and commerce operations relied on. MDTA announced it has raised the cost estimate to a range of $4.3-$5.2 billion, up from $1.7 billion. The predicted opening date of the bridge has been pushed back from 2028 to late 2030.Why, you ask? MDTA attributes the doubling or tripling of the cost to changing national economic conditions and material costs, which the agency says have increased dramatically. Because the cost and timeline estimates were made less than two weeks after the collapse on March 26, 2024, they didn’t factor in pre-construction activities (which have been underway since this summer), advanced design, and updated data points. *** A big part of the cost increase comes from the length of the main bridge span and the height of the main piers. The new bridge’s main span will be 1,665 feet long to accommodate today’s large ships (some of which are much larger than the Dali).I'm sorry -- WHAT?? The original estimates didn't factor in pre-construction activities or the length of the new main span??? Nobody picked up on that a year and a half ago? Yeah, OK. Here's a recent photo of pre-construction activities. ![]() Within hours of the bridge’s collapse, then-President Joe Biden promised that the federal government would cover 100% of the cost of replacement. That pledge was later codified into law by Congress. But President Donald Trump (R) has repeatedly hinted that he does not feel bound by that agreement. In an online spat with Gov. Wes Moore (D) in August, whcn Moore slammed Trump’s suggestion that he might send National Guard troops into Baltimore, the president ended a lengthy social media post by saying he “gave Wes Moore a lot of money to fix his demolished bridge. I will now have to rethink that decision???” And U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, while pledging that the federal government is committed to working with the state to deliver a new Key Bridge, has pressed the state for updates on costs and the timeline for the reconstruction. “Congress granted the Secretary of Transportation important authorities to conduct critical oversight to ensure that Federal highway funds are properly managed, and I take this authority seriously,” Duffy said in a September letter to state officials. “It is my role to guarantee that federally funded projects benefit the entire Nation through every dollar spent.” In that letter, Duffy also warned that the state’s “reliance on race- or sex-conscious factors in contracting decisions” could threaten the project. It was a reference to the state Disadvantaged Business Enterprise program, which aims to use state contracts to bolster minority- and women-owned businesses. Kiewit, the contractor overseeing the bridge project, has committed to a goal of using 26% “disadvantaged business enterprises,” including campanies [sic] that are at least 51% owned and controlled by one or more minority individuals. What does Governor Moore say about that? In a statement Monday night, Moore said the state will “continue to work with the Trump Administration to find ways to reduce costs and rebuild faster.” The higher costs and longer timeline are the result of outside factors, “not discretionary state choices,” he said.Yup. Not his fault. And definitely not any cronyism or grift going on. ----- In another part of the country, a bridge nears completion. New Yellowstone Bridge Replaces Crumbling 62-Year-Old Span ![]() Big news, big bridge - visitors to Yellowstone National Park are now using the new Yellowstone River Bridge. This major Great American Outdoors Act project is moving into its final phase as crews continue work on overlooks, remove the old bridge, and restore the Lost Creek drainage. The full project is expected to be completed in 2026. The bridge was one of the biggest projects in the park's recent history. The old bridge was deemed structurally deficient, with crumbling concrete. The new bridge, located upstream, is more than twice as long, at 1,285 feet, as the 62-year-old bridge. *** The project was originally estimated to cost slightly more than $71 million, but park officials said the rising cost of labor and materials like concrete and steel pushed the budget to $118 million.Wes Moore is probably laughing at the relatively tiny price tag for this bridge! Conservationists recently reunited a mother otter with her baby and caught it on film. It seems surreal when marine conservationists plop the lost baby sea otter into the frigid waters of Morro Bay in Central California. Before it makes its way back into the arms of its mother, the thing just bobbed around like a crabbing buoy. *** For two hours, the team plied the coastline, blasting the call off of one side of the boat and then the other with no luck. Finally, a female otter popped her head above the water and began to take interest in the boat—something otters almost never do; they have no interest in people or boats typically. The intern moved the speaker around the sides of the boat to see if the visitor would follow the sound: which it did, giving them the cue to throw man overboard overboard. With up to 970,000 strands of hair per square inch, the sea otter’s fur is the densest of any animal. An air layer sits between the skin and the base of the fur that prevents any water from reaching it. It is, therefore, startlingly buoyant. Lowering it gently into the water, it floated helplessly on its back, rolling around as if it were on a thick quilt. Mom swam over, grabbed the baby, and began to smell it rather intensely before swimming away, reunited with its pup.Video at the link 1991 - Achtung Baby from U2. Yes, this band takes a lot of deserved scorn from the Horde. But they did make some great music in the early days, and I'd say this is their last really good album. I'll forego the hits / singles from the album and go with a deep track - dedicated to a lovely lady who is gone but will never be forgotten. This was among her favorites. 1985 - Psychocandy, debut album from The Jesus and Mary Chain. I remember buying this CD when it came out. The audio mix is very heavy on treble. Not sure why. Also in 1985, a banger of an album was released. Here's a track from it. Dedicated to Mis Hum. ![]() Comments or questions? Suggestions for content? Do the email thing at doof2112 at proton dot me. I have watched the first three episodes of Ken Burns' new PBS special on the Revolutionary War (basically, everything through Trenton).
So far, I give it a B to a B-. Where Burns sticks to the purely military side of things, it's pretty good; there's a lot of great maps and 3D models of the battlefields, and plenty of stories about the experiences of individual soldiers. On the other hand, Burns does get into the race/gender nonsense more than he should. Not as much as he probably would have if Trump wasn't in charge now, and to be clear, the Revolution does have social tensions that deserve to be talked about; but you do notice it. It's worth a watch, but don't take everything at face value. Posted by: Dr. T at November 18, 2025 10:05 PM (lHPJf) 26

Again sacrificing precious time to watch American Revolution for y'all. The third episode covers the initially hard times for the Patriot army and Washington. It mentions the two Howe brothers, one a general the other an admiral. The general makes several half-hearted attempts to defeat Washington. Winter begins to set in and Washington's somewhat diminished army defeats a larger Hessian complement and then FREES the Germans! Says they have been forced to fight! Less this episode of racial comments and indian notes. Both groups are treated poorly by the patriots and the blacks essentially ignored by the Brits.

Trump, who builds things, must be laughing, swearing, and shaking his head over the bridge non-construction. I think he should pay for it ONLY on condition that all federal contracting requirements are removed -- if that hasn't happened already. Today our Knights of Columbus council packed over 350 Thanksgiving dinner boxes to hand out tomorrow for needy families around here. You know, the usual stuff - turkeys, boxes of mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, stuffing, green beans and corn. Various deserts too.
Worked a deal with a food wholesaler to loan us a reefer trailer - actually the same one they used to deliver the turkeys. Another Brother Knight and I finally got through to the powers that be this year to NOT provide frozen, monster turkeys to the recipients. Instead, we gave them smaller turkey roasts. Around here, the truly poor don't have big freezers, don't know how to thaw a bird anyway, and may not have a working oven. It's hard for some folks to consider that not everyone has the same capabilities as they do. But, we're making progress. Posted by: Tonypete at November 18, 2025 10:12 PM (cYBz/) 55

Strangely, I have moron experience building a bridge. Montana, 1965. My uncle and I built a bridge over a creek a little over 30 feet wide. Used four BIG timbers as the base and 4x12s as the floor. Only powered tool was a Ford tractor which my uncle drove over the first two base pieces. It was about 15' down to the water. I was keeping quiet but he told my aunt that evening at supper. I thought she was passing out! So . . . . across a bay? I might need a bigger tractor!

65 I looked up the Tappan Zee bridge rebuild and that cost $4B for a bridge twice as long as this one is supposed to be.
And the original Key bridge cost $141M which is supposedly about $500M in current dollars. So...yeah there is a LOT of graft built into this estimate. Posted by: 18-1 at November 18, 2025 10:15 PM (sKqQm) I'm so glad you called it the Tappan Zee. I will never call it the Mario Cuomo Bridge. Fun fact: The Tappan Zee is not built at the closest space between the two sides - in fact it is practically at the farthest space between them. That is because the builders didn't want the bridge subject to PATH revenue confiscation, so they built it at the point just beyond their jurisdiction. The Newport Bridge which is actually longer overall than the Golden Gate Bridge was finished in 1969 at a total cost of $54 million. There was a really interesting documentary done a few years ago about the history of the bridge and it's pretty interesting both for how the bridge was built and how it changed the entire region.

Am I wrong, or didn't NBF change his mind about blacks?
---------- Yes, indeed he did. He delivered an address at the opening of a college for blacks in the 1870s. To show just how much he changed, in the aftermath of the Fort Pillow massacre, there was an angry exchange of letters between Federal General Hindman (IIRR) and Forrest, in which Hindman accused Forrest of deliberately massacring the USCT. Forrest indignantly replied that he did not, that he would never destroy valuable property. Showing a really alien mindset to me. In modern democracies, a minority can dominate long-term via alliances and demographics like higher birth rates, without needing absolute majority. That’s why I specified “about” a year.
Army Corps of Engineers (and the Seabees) did incredible work during the war years, along with large corporations, who were not necessarily interested in taking on more work than they already had. Oak Ridge and Hanford alone were pretty big operations, and the airfields at places like Tinian were among the largest anywhere. Although something like 15 million Americans were in uniform, a huge workforce had to stay at home, I’m not sure how they got them. If one was a machinist or welder, he probably got pulled out of the .mil fairly early on. Posted by: Common Tater at November 18, 2025 11:42 PM (S79R3) 341

U2's popular songs (e.g. Sunday Bloody Sunday) are ok, but not great. U2's good stuff is good because A) Bono does have an amazing voice and 2) because the guitar sound is very unique.
A great example of the unique guitar would be the opening of 'Where the Streets Have No Name'. It is a guitar like no other. Also their song 'One'. Say what you will, but the guitar is unique and really works well with the song. As far as Bono's voice, their ongoing 'One Tree Hill' is a great example of what Bono was capable of. If anyone wants to give an honest assessment, have a listen to One Tree Hill. It also has U2's unique guitar. Do listen beginning to end though... it builds nicely, anBono really gets going after about 3:50. https://tinyurl.com/ur3yjck5 Posted by: 496 at November 19, 2025 12:18 AM (Mjjx+) 389

Out to lunch Henry Kaiser.
Between 1931 and 1945, he helped organize combinations of construction companies to build the Hoover, Bonneville, and Grand Coulee dams, as well as other large projects. To supply the more than 6,000,000 barrels of cement needed for the Shasta Dam, he erected a cement plant in Permanente, Calif., and a nine-mile conveyor belt across a mountain to the dam site in 1939. During World War II he ran seven shipyards that used assembly-line production to build ships in as little as 4 1/2 days. By the end of the war, his yards had produced 1,490 ships for the U.S. maritime commission. In 1941–42, he built the only integrated steel mill on the west coast of the United States, to make steel for his shipyards. Does WWV have a transmitter on 2.5 mHz? I picked up something going "tick, tick, tick" at that spot on the dial. Radio plays; the problem is the power switch, located in the back of the tone control, is no good. And there is dust or crap in the tuning capacitor, manifested as scratchy noise as you tune the dial through one area on any of the bands. A shot of brake cleaner, and a blast with an air nozzle ought to fix that.

WWV has resumed broadcasting on 25 MHz on an experimental basis. The broadcast consists of the normal WWV signal heard on all other WWV frequencies, at the same level of accuracy. If the tuning capacitor section is nominally 40 to 240 pF, the trimmer might range it from 38 to 238, or 42 to 242 pF. And those adjustments all interact. You set all the screws to get max volume on a station at 1410 kHz, and you may find reception a 610 suffers a lot. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at November 19, 2025 12:55 AM (npFr7) 438

I refurbed a really ancient Philco for a guy once, one of those Cathedral style. Real pain in the ass, because Philco didn’t use standard capacitors, they had proprietary tar-encased blocks.
Anyway when I got done, I noticed the intermediate transformers had been aligned in such a way for maximum bandwidth & fidelity, it was almost deaf on most of the dial but picked up the local station at the high end really nice, with surprisingly good tone. They must have kept it tuned to one and only one station. Once it was all aligned according to Hoyle it was quite good at reception, but had reverted to that characteristic tinny kind of old radio sound from the 1930s. They do sound way better for voice. I recapped a big wooden console radio for someone else, and that fucker could get you arrested when turned up loud. I think it was a Motorola. I know this is hard to believe but there is zero incentive in keeping a solar energy system on a public building operational.
In fact, as you amuse yourself with the illusion that your tax dollars are being used for a good purpose, the truth is a shocking number of these systems aren't even operational. Maintenance costs money. It's cheaper and easier just to flip the breakers and walk away. This happens a lot. But they are serving their purpose. I know this is true by being involved in a statewide energy audit of schools and other public buildings. Our findings resulted in the future funding of energy audits was cut. Kent Rollins has a real good cooking channel he does, on the Tube that is You, he turned me on to Chipotle in Adobo sauce. Smoked Jalapeños in a tomato sauce w/onion and garlic. Supplied in twee little cans. Great for everything really, from Chili of course, chicken & rice, even potato casserole dishes. Should be great in omelettes too. Use with caution at first, one can will give a large bowl of red a pretty decent kick. Has more flavor than heat. That’s what I like, can’t see any reason for food to actually burn.
