Sunday Overnight Open Thread - November 16, 2025 [Doof]

doof-oneyear4seasons1.jpg
Wow - a whole year already?!?

Howdy Hordelings! Welcome to the Sunday night ONT! In case you were wondering, and I know you ALL were - tonight marks the one year anniversary of my first ONT post. Exactly 52 weeks ago tonight, I dipped my toes into the ONT hosting pool for the first time. Little did I know then that I'd become the regular Sunday night host, I'd incrementally add a 2nd and 3rd night, and I'd co-host the (as of then non-existent) Saturday night Club ONT. You folks put up with me FOUR nights a week! How do you do it?!?!

Anyway, I was planning to merely mention this 1-year anniversary just briefly. Then I saw the Wednesday night ONT from T Rex, and a bar was set. Naturally, I had to try to outdo my good friend and colleague - the short armed one. So what's say we step inside and see what I was able to come up with?

This is YUUUUGE!

Somehow, word of my anniversary reached POTUS 45/47. So awesome of him to take time out of his busy schedule to send me this message!

(Click here if the player doesn't appear for you)

Thank you, Mr. President! I'm a big fan of your work, as well!

-----

Speaking of POTUS, check out this clip from 2015. It's new to me - how about you?

Put This Guy on the AOSHQ Sockpuppet List

Man Changes His Name Every Year to Avoid Paying Child Support

Roman Korenev, head of the bailiff service responsible for collecting child support payments in Tyumen, Russia, recently revealed one of the most shocking cases of his career in an interview with Russian media outlet 72.RU. The official claimed that a local man completely changed his last name, first name, and patronymic once a year, hoping to evade child support liability.

A year later, the unnamed man would return to his old name and repeat the process. This was his attempt to evade bailiffs and “zero out” the debt. It’s unclear how long he managed to hide from the bailiffs, but his efforts turned out to be futile.

“When a person’s name changes, the registry office reports this information to the bailiffs, so the debtor can’t avoid paying child support this way,” Roman Korenev said.

Pretty shifty and very slimy. Hit the link for more info and some additional links to slimy behavior such as this.

Gen X Content

If you happened to read my first ONT a year ago, you may recall that it featured a plethora of Gen X content. How about we do that again?

-----

This one will take you back!

This is actually more technologically advanced than the process for building a thread here on AOSHQ.

-----

Damn - I miss these types of sound systems!

Yeah - you just had to be there!

'Ette Couture (Courtesy of Piper)

It's that time of the week - when we turn the ONT over to our good friend Piper for a bit. Here's this week's fashion pr0n.

------

THE FOLD STANDARD

PARIS — In a move that has left even the most jaded front-rowers reaching for their pearls, haute couture has officially entered its Pulp Fiction Era. Designers are trading silk faille for recycled receipt rolls, swapping Swarovski for staples, and draping models in gowns that could double as origami cranes made by beginners. The trend has been officially labeled Papier Couture.

The Origami That Ate the Métier
It started innocently enough: Matthieu Blazy sent a Balenciaga receipt trench down the runway in April, printed with 47 yards of actual customer complaints. (“Item not as described—returned.” ) Critics called it “conceptual.” By November, every atelier from the 8th arrondissement to Bushwick was pulping Vogue archives into bias-cut slips.

IMG_5682-1r.jpg

Key Looks from “Le Crunch” Season
1. Chanel No. 5-Ply
A cocoon coat crafted from 3,200 shredded I LOVE PARIS tourist maps. The hem unfolds into a pop-up Eiffel Tower if you sneeze too hard. Price: €1.2 million (or 12,000 café receipts—whichever you hit first).

IMG_5683-1r.jpg

2. Dior’s “Press Release” Gown
87 layers of glossy press releases announcing the gown itself. The skirt spells “SOLD OUT” in negative space. Comes with a QR code that rickrolls you to a 404 page.
(Sorry - image not available. Apparently it's undocumented.)

3. Rick Owens’ “Confessional” Cape
Black cardstock, hole-punched, and threaded with red string like a crime-scene mood board. Whisper “I overpaid” into the hood and it auto-shreds in protest.

IMG_5684-1r.jpg

Sustainability? Or Just Printer Ink?
Eco-warriors are folding under the weight of hypocrisy. Yes, the paper is FSC-certified, post-consumer, soy-ink, gluten-free—but each look requires 17 reams, a laminator, and one intern named Chaz who hasn’t seen sunlight since September.

“It’s carbon-neutral if you don’t count the thermo-lamination or the private jet to the paper mill in Finland.”
—A spokesperson.

Street Style: Crumple Core
Outside the shows, influencers are balling up yesterday’s Financial Times into salmon-pink turbans. One It-girl arrived in a Fortune 500 ballgown—literally sewn from shredded stock certificates.

IMG_5686-1r.jpg

The Aftermath
By finale, the Grand Palais runway resembled a ticker-tape parade hosted by a shredder. Models exited trailing confetti. Pharrell closed the week with a Louis Vuitton paper bag shaped like a Birkin. It retails for €42,000 and holds exactly one AirPod.

IMG_5685-1r.jpg

What’s Next?
Rumor has it Spring 2026 will be “Wet Paper”—gowns that dissolve on contact with champagne. Until then, invest in Mod Podge. Your recycling bin just became couture.
Piper is busy folding this article into a tiny paper boat. Send help (and scissors).

------

Thanks, Piper! I see what you did there with the paper theme. Paper being the standard gift for 1 year anniversary. Thank you for remembering - and for the effort you put in each week to help make the Sunday ONT better than if it were just my stuff!

49 I see a lot of videos and memes about how awesome it was to grow up in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. The irony is, the kids of that era (myself included) grew up into parents who did not let our kids go out and do those same things. We kept them in after school daycare or over scheduled them in activities so they did not have time to explore the world on their own.

I don’t recall the bishops making any sort of video like this to condemn the Biden White House for supporting, funding, and facilitating the mass slaughter of children in the womb.

I also can’t remember seeing any video with solemn condemnations of the Biden White House and its support for the castration and sexual mutilation of children. That’s in spite of the fact that Biden is actually “Catholic” and he was actively engaged in activities that are explicitly condemned as mortally sinful by the Church.

Trump is neither Catholic nor is he doing anything, policy wise, that contradicts Church teaching. Deportations certainly do not. And yet the bishops suddenly find their voice and their courage for this issue. Very strange indeed.

He has always known that he's not going to be harmed by them. If Biden and Harris didn't release them when they had every reason to do so if they hurt Trump, we know that he's only holding them back to maximize the pain Dems will feel when the docs Biden was trying to protect them from are finally released.

118 Not first. Not last. But a spectacular syncope at mass today.

New to the idea of conversion to be Catholic. Have attended several masses before for in-laws, grandson, etc. No fainting.

Today, after not a great week of sleep and forgetting to drink water before my tea, I passed out kneeling. Granted, if I croaked no one would doubt where I'd be tonight. Son and the Internet say this happens in mass. I can vouch for this and am admitting it here because no one knows me.

My husband said he thought I was in deep prayer. Asked if I was ok and I said no. He and our son put me back on the pew and the performance began. For Piper: I was wearing a black cashmere sweater and long pleated acorn colored skirt, so I looked good.

My concern tonight is if anyone saw my underwear. Hoisted in a wheelchair in front of half of the church, and oriented in a minute or two. Taken to the library where my vitals/EKG were normal.I told the paramedics I did not want to go to the ED. Began my apology tour, drank some water and some sort of major glucose stuff (my blood glucose was normal). Walked out fine

EMT's said I need to see my PCP this week, per son. All will be well. Always something.

That is right out of my wheelhouse. I'll bet there are youtube videos on how to fix a "lazy" CD player.

I have taken CD drives apart. IIRC, there is a motor to spin the disc, and a motor that runs the eject mechanism. If i were faced with your problem, I would try applying oil to any motor bearings, or spindle bearing I could see. Like where a steel shaft turns in a brass bushing. With long disuse, the original oil can gum up.

I hope my mouth was not hanging open as they wheeled me out is my second concern, after hoping no one saw my underwear. I doubt my son was concerned. My husband was in the aisle but told me he doubted it...the skirt is long.

A wheelchair they keep handy for swooners. I was swiftly removed and the service went on as if nothing happened, apparently. DIL and grands showed up after the service was over, and our first girl crawled up in my lap near tears and asked if I died. Indeed I did not, my sweeties!

I am sure they will tell their teachers tomorrow that I died while in prayer. She is 4yrs old and can convince people of anything because she has talked like an adult for two years. So I possibly have not heard the end of this.

1) LOL!

B) I wonder if laughing at that should be mentioned at my next Confession.

God has had exactly four sinless people to work with in all of history. The first two screwed it up. The third gave birth to the fourth, who was His son. So almost every good thing done on this earth has been done by a sinner.

I usually use that to counter whataboutisms about politicians. (How can a good Catholic support Trump with all the things he's done?) But I guess it applies to Popes, too.

247 I have taken CD drives apart.

Younger adults are entering the market earlier: the share of 25-year-olds in 2024 that used investment accounts was 37%, versus 6% for 25-year-olds in 2015.
---

And they are buying houses 15 years later than historically.
It's easier to buy shares of stock than to buy a house.
When I started you had to buy 100 shares or pay a stiff penalty.
Today you can buy one share.

The reason young folks aren't buying homes is the cost to income ratio is out of sight. In the 1950s, the average home cost about 2.35 times the typical salary of a family. Today, the median home price is about six times the median household income.

First page return answers are between $65 & $68K.
By the article that would put a house at $400K.

Income and housing prices are regional so those numbers can skew one way or the other. $400k for a starter home seems a bit pricey.

Yea, so are salaries.

The biggest problem we have as a country is too many people who shouldn't be here. As that number goes down watch how things change.

I am blessed they came into my life. During Covid. I have been an amazing friend. Trust me. The Horde would be proud.

When they moved in, wife was on the street with then youngest girl. I introduced myself. We talked. There were signs on their lawn "NO More LOCKDOWNS!" And wife said they home schooled.

I told her right there "I don't want to scare you, but I love you."

I have been blessed with wonderful friends at 29.1 years. They are blessed with me.

And I decided tonight, Christmas in November is getting too fancy. For 5th year, I will bring out Mom's china, no food preperation. I'm bringing in pizza, chicken and whatever. Back to basics.

With china.

3 hour Christmas parties with people you would give your life for rule.

400k in some areas will get you a shitbox.

Besides the biggest problem is coming up with the down payment, how many young adults starting out can swing 80k for a down payment?

Almost no one.

So thy put down far less and pay far more in mortgage insurance and those are the ones that can scratch something together to get that starter home.

It’s time to hold them accountable too.

Audio manipulation, fake news, false translations, propaganda – when it comes to Trump, Germany’s public broadcasters stop at nothing.

German public broadcasters likewise demonize Donald J. Trump more than perhaps any other Western politician. In this dossier, NIUS documents – on the basis of extensive material – how ARD, ZDF, and their subsidiaries have been shaping the image of an authoritarian monster since 2016, abandoning basic journalistic principles: context, neutrality, factual accuracy.

339 Thanks to over-inflated housing prices, I can't even foresee being able to downsize from my current place.

It's complicated-- but current house isn't in great shape. Livable, but barely. Would take more money than I have, to bring it up to mid-dollar condition. Then, even if it sold-- would pay all of the proceeds for what? Yet another fixer-upper, but would have nothing left to *fix-up* with. So. Unless I win a lottery, I'm stuck.

340 The "A-ha" video from 1985 referenced above was amazing at the time it was created, which was before widespread computer generated animation.

Never heard of hydronic baseboard until just now. Thanks!

382 It doesn't get horribly cold here, not for long anyway-- down to zero at night for a few weeks I guess. Sometimes minus-teens but rarely lower.

I think we differ on the definition of "horribly" lol. That might actually be too cold for a mini split to work heat wise. Usually gas companies will run the line "to" your house for free. Well they do around here anyway. Definitely look into that. A furnace could be had fairly cheap, but where to put it might be an issue.

Well, it does freeze here.. when I mention temperatures, they are Fahrenheit. It will remain below 32 for weeks at a time, day and night, but it sure isn't like the northern-midwestern states thank God!

They are great. its basically the same shit as the oil filled space heater you mentioned, but it's actual baseboard secure to the wall like normal baseboard. You'll be able to have a wall thermostat with them. They run on 220, well the one I had did.

Thanks for all your suggestions, Bers and Braenyard!
