Gun Thread: Third November Edition!

111625 calendar scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be the Third November Edition? Now that Halloween is in the rearview mirror, are you getting ready for Thanksgiving?

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

FUNdamentals

Well will you looky here. More pistol fundamentals! Funny how our favorite concept, focusing on fundamentals, keeps coming up, huh? Anyhow, here's a guy outdoors in the cold and snow and wearing gloves.

Back in my coaching days, new shooters seemed to be looking to me for one weird trick that would improve their shooting and make them a world-class marksman. Many were disappointed to learn the weird trick was practice and a focus on fundamentals. That's the trick. Easy peasey.

17 No range report.

Where do I prefer to shoot? Outdoors if it is not to cold or driving rain. Though I did go skeet shooting with my nephew one time when a Nor'Easter was coming through.
That was fun. :-)

Also, I am about an hour and a half away from the outdoor range I belong to. The closest indoor range for me is about a half hour.
I will go there only for pistol.
That distance from the outdoor range has to be taken into account. Easily could be gone for 5 or more hours. Really eats into the day.

Posted by: Skip at November 16, 2025 07:07 PM (+qU29)

That takes effect on January 1. But a lot of manufacturers are offering $200 discounts on their stuff right now. Keep in mind, just because the $200 tax goes away does not mean the NFA paperwork goes away too. If you want a quick turnaround (one week or less), you'll have to submit that paperwork via the E-forms system BATFE uses. Dead tree is still OK too, but getting fingerprint cards is a PITA and will extend your packet's turnaround time to about six months if you insist on paper. You can't take your suppressor home until BATFE says it's OK to do so.

32 Early to the thread and most likely early to leave, I picked up a High Standard Sentinel 22 LR last week and did a bit of bore and cylinder cleaning, crusty rust removal from barrel and cylinder, lockup was tight, barrel was excellent, dates from about 1957-8. Not an expensive firearm by any means but collector condition ones are going now for about 400-500 bucks.

The design is unique with only one screw (the grip screw). Designer was Harry Sefried who later became chief designer at Ruger for the Security Six, Mini 14, and Redhawk projects among others.

Harry came to High Standard from Winchester where he worked briefly with David Carbine Williams on the M1 Carbine among other projects.

Sears, under the JC Higgins imprint, also sold these. Aluminum frame, steel cylinder and barrel, and put together almost entirely as I mentioned above with pins instead of screws. Excellent sights for an older 50's design and the plastic grips are comfortable without using Tyler T grips or Magna Grips, etc. High Standard made them until the 70's along with some rare variants like colored frames (anodized), 22 Magnum, etc.

Excellent kit gun type accuracy btw.

34 14 ... "Isn't the western tv show Gunsmoke set in the pre smokeless powder Era? There oughta be moar smoke."

Yep, there should. But TV shows and movies are seldom accurate about firearms. On a calm day I need to wait for the smoke from my flintlock to clear to see the target. The phrase 'fog of war' might be a metaphor for confusion. But in the old days of armies using black powder guns and canons the smoke cold obscure the entire battlefield.

I'm holding off pending the outcome of the court cases challenging NFA registration on the basis that without the tax there is no constitutional justification for registration. Which makes sense to me and also to Chuck (U.) Schumer who tried to amend the BBB to make the tax $1.00 instead of $0.00.

Posted by: bill in arkansas

If you want 7.5 barrel, don't bother with a 223/5.56 as the blast is simply nasty. The variants like the .300 Blackout or even the 6.8 SPC do decently in the shorter barrel without the blast.

Best barrel length for 223/5.56 to avoid muzzle blast and rougher handling pistol length overgassed systems, is about 10.5-11 inches with a forward compensator to direct blast forward. That gives you a longer gas system reducing the rougher cycling to a carbine length gas system so you can avoid putting an adjustable gas block on it.

Improves ballistics substantially as the 223/.5.56 was designed around a 20 inch barrel length, the M4 was a kludge mainly because 20 inch barrels aint the greatest in close combat and egress from armored vehicles. The BO and the 6.8 Spec were designed ground up for short barrels and the BO allows subsonic heavies as well.

Are you shooting 5.56mm NATO? I understand that SOCOM favors heavier 5.56mm rounds (69-77 grains) when using short barrels today. The lighter M193 rounds used in Vietnam era XM177E2 carbines (10.5") had a tendency to keyhole and become erratic outside of very short (50m?) ranges. If you decide to mount a suppressor to reduce muzzle blast/flash, it'll need a lot of cleaning to remove the fouling that'll get deposited inside the suppressor.

The 22 Mags are still a relatively rare revolver even among the big makes. Some have teh convertible cylinders in single actions which generally sucks on accuracy as the bullet diameters of teh two cartridges are not the same.

Seems to be making a comeback and I like my bolt action Marlin 783 just fine in 22 Mag.

54 Harry came to High Standard from Winchester where he worked briefly with David Carbine Williams
---------

Williams worked up the basis for the M1 carbine while in prison. A good 'ol North Carolina moonshiner. Well, there was the matter of that dead deputy sheriff:
"Williams began operating an illegal distillery near Godwin, North Carolina. On July 22, 1921, the Cumberland County Sheriff and five deputies seized the still and product after the workers fled. While transporting the evidence away from the scene, the deputies came under gunfire from the woods. Riding away from the scene on the police car sideboard, Deputy Sheriff Alfred Jackson Pate was struck by two bullets and died at the scene. Williams was arrested for the murder the following day.

Scuba Dude, you might want to take a look at 9 Hole Reviews' clone build of the MAC-V SOG M16A1, the Mark 4 Mod 0. This is an essentially an M16A1 kit build on a built out 80% lower fitted w/ 4X Colt scope and an Allen Engineering suppressor clone of the original. Because it still has a 20" barrel, it's able to score hits out to 500 yards. The video also discusses the build for a gastight charging handle and controlling the gases directed back at the shooter from the suppressor, which definitely sounds useful for anyone looking to suppress a direct gas impingement rifle/carbine.

This week I tested my hypothesis by shooting 120s and 156s.
I think my reloading skills have improved. The 120s shot .380” and the 156s did .600”. (Pix over at my place). I’ll take anything under 1 MOA.
It’s going to be just what shoots best in your rifle.

64 My uncle is an incredibly talented Marine. He has a range in his basement.

I'm on the gun thread. I'm wondering. I actually have my Canadian gun permits. Not horribly hard to get, but you jump through hoops and have classes.

It's been a horrible year. Weasel, thank you again and I am sorry. The second time my brother blew up my living situation after my Mother I took care of for 14 years, I lost it. Weasel was quick. Thank you. And again. I am so sorry.

Here's the question. In a round about way. After my year of loss, I am doing a lot better now. I see a path forward. In some darker moments, I actually did decide to call the Ontario health care system to see if I could get some help.

I don't have guns. This year, that was very good. But I was wondering how that would affect my gun permit. I don't think it matters unless I was a threat to myself or others. I never called suicide hotlines. Just the regular help people.

I told them I wasn't a danger to myself or others. I just had a year of loss, betrayal, potential homelessness and wanted to talk. I do have an appt in December. But again, I turned a corner.

Curiously, at what point can the government revoke your gun permit?

Smaller than usual gathering of the DMV MGC, EdL, Blaster, Me and for the first time in a long time Stinky's Daddy. I was determined to work on sighting issues so only brought my two G48's, one with and one without dot. At 5 and 7 yards I could shoot both guns without the patch. Yay! At 10 yds, not so much. Because I seemed to be hitting the target, decided to think about trigger pull and exactly what part of my finger was actually pulling the trigger. I need to work on this but overall was pretty happy with how today went.

68 I used to have fun indoors with Aguila “hummingbird” .22 ammo, it won’t cycle but there is no powder in the cartridge, just the primer. Flobert makes a suitable round too. Great for vermin in the barn or whatever, won’t frighten the womenfolk or horses.

69 But I still want an OA-93.

Then handload. The basic truth is that 223/5.56 was adapted from the triple deuce .222 and is essentially a varmint round relying on very high speed to punch through. You get that in longer barrel length as the 55 gr does upset ballistically at about 3000-3300 fps producing a wound out of normal for that bullet weight because it swing ass over teakettle (tumbling up to keyholing) when it encounters some obstacle like flesh. Brit's .303 Mark VII bullet did something similar producing substantially similar wounds to the more higher powered 8x57 and 30-06.

Short barrels make it difficult for the 5.56 to strut its stuff and if you want good performance in short barrels, forget what the military does (they can't use hunting bullets designed to fragment, hollowpoints for expansion, etc.). Shorter barrel are never going to be long distance shooters so go with cartridges designed from the ground up for them. Aka the 300 BO or the 6.8 SPC and both have plenty of hunting bullets and/or loaded ammo for anything up to boars and deer. 6.5 Grendel is similar but harder to find bullets/ammo for hunting.

70 Also, I am about an hour and a half away from the outdoor range I belong to. The closest indoor range for me is about a half hour.

My situation is similar even though I don't live in a bustling metropolis. The indoor range is conveniently close and pretty nice but only 25 yards. I've been waffling about joining one of the two outdoor ranges each about an hour and a half away because I'm just not sure I'd be able to get out there often enough to make it worthwhile.

Posted by: Oddbob at November 16, 2025 07:32 PM (3nLb4)

71 Thanks for the ammo advice up above.I'll try the heavier weight bullets in it. Like I said, shooting sessions will be low count affairs, just enough for fam firing and making sure the little guy will work when needed. Might buy a longer upper for longer shooting sessions.

4.75 SAA clone due in this week.

I would suggest Canadian rifle forums etc. Your laws are substantially different than the US but federal law requires being committed (judicially) to be a bar for ownership/purchase (those that have criminal felonies and domestic violence misdemeanors or illegal drug users are too).

Have a question. Can I, as a newbie, show up empty-handed to a range here in SoCal (most of the acclaimed ones are in the Inland Empire) and ask to try shooting some handguns?

I'd assume they at least want me to (a) call first (b) give them info so they can look up my background, among other things.

You'll have to check w/ the manufacturer and the instructions for your suppressor. Some suppressors can partially disassemble to let you get to their insides. Some won't. This is one part where old school wipes are better than modern baffles. The wipes after use, are disposed of. Baffles require some kind of cleaning.

84 Hey, everybody. No range report this week because, apparently, we're a plague house for this week.

As far as indoor vs outdoor shooting, well, when it's roughly five billion degrees in the shade with 6000 percent humidity, (numbers are approximate) indoor is indicated. I am looking forward to shooting outside when it's nice.

Why? I use ultrasonic cleaners for fired brass sometimes but a lot of parts nowadays are anondized aluminum with darkened finishes of various sorts.

Often these (and some plastics) do not like ultrasonic baths to clean. You can sometimes get wonky results as well if you have small parts that are not standard bluing etc.

FInd your solution that you want to use first and then investigate cleaners instead of buying the expensive cleaner first and then finding out your solution doesn't work is or is harmful to gun finishes.

100 Indoor shooting ranges. Or outdoor for that matter.A person might be wise to see if they have a range master on duty when things get busy. Not to coach you if you know what you're doing, but to keep an eye out for the imbeciles. I had a moonlighting job at an indoor range and GS and we would get some real fools in from time to time. Outside of DC, we had some embassy security contracts, and sometimes non security people from the embassies would come in, a lot very ignorant about all things firearms, having seen the last Bruce Willis movie being their training.

Carbine Williams' "floating chamber" was also used by Colt in its Service Model Ace handgun. The Service Model Ace was a 1911 modified to use .22LR for cheaper training. Earlier models (Colt Ace) had parts that were not interchangeable w/ .45 ACP models and failed to fully replicate the recoil of the .45 ACP cartridge. The Service Model Ace did a much better job than the Ace did. In addition to complete pistols, Colt made conversion kits for shooters to convert their Government Models to .22LR from .45 ACP through the 1970s.

It basically walked right up to him as he was going back to his vehicle. So he shot it.

My old boss hit a deer with this Ram truck out in the country and since he had a pistol he stopped and walked back to see if he needed to put it out of it's misery. As he bent down to check, it sprang to life and started trying to gore and kick him. In his surprise he dropped the pistol and grabbed the antler wrestling with the buck. As he tells it, he started to panic because he was an old man and was starting to get winded in the struggle and yet was terrified of letting go. So he dragged the deer a few feet into the water filled ditch and managed to drown it before his strength failed.

Just as he finished and collapsed on the bank his neighbor drove up, rolled down his window and asked 'Wouldn't it have been easier to shot the deer?'

134 You used to be able to buy rubber "bullets" in common calibers for exactly that purpose. At close range, they would cut neat wadcutter-like holes in paper. No idea if they're still a thing.
Posted by: Oddbob at November 16, 2025 07:54 PM (3nLb4)

Back in 2011, the Army was moving to Sim-munition rounds (aka "Sims") vice rubber/wax bullets. "Sims" required a conversion kit that would prevent the use of live ammo in that weapon, but gave greater training value by allowing the use of "force on force" training in CQB scenarios. No more "I got you first" arguments in the exercises. When you got shot by "Sims," you knew you'd been hit. They hurt. If you got hit on bare skin, you'd get a welt. You had to wear eye-pro, of course.

137 Suppressors with wipers. Knew a guy in Ohio, a man of some wealth. Mentioned here before he was a student, not a nut, about the Kennedy assassination and tasked me with building an Oswald rifle. Anyway, he had a few class 3 items, one being a High Standard HD with a very long suppressor using wipers. That gun, with run of the mill standard velocity .22s was so quiet you could hear the slide going clikety clack.

147 Haven't heard of this in a long time but I recall reading about wax bullets for indoor training. Revolver only. No powder, just the primer for propellant. Basically, you just pressed the case mouth into a piece of wax, sort of like a wadcutter. Also, I think the flash hole had to be enlarged slightly which made the case unsafe for regular loads.

174 On January 1st the tax stamp fee for silencers drops to zero dollars. You will still have to do all the paperwork and approvals.

Your local gun shop that deals in silencers may allow you to put one or two on layaway now, and pay off the balance after the end of the year. This will let you avoid a sudden lack of silencer inventory after the first of the year.

I don't think there will be a total unavailability due to excessive demand, but the specific model you want may not be back on the shelf for a long time.

High Standard capitalized on WWII fame in selling thousands to OSS and US military for suppressed use. They are good firearms as long as nothing is wrong with them as spare parts from a firearm made over 60-70 years ago from a defunct company can be a pain. High Standard name has risen again and some parts are available. Try interarmstx dot com (and that is a successor to the famed Interarms import firm formerly located in VA.

Source: Charles Pate's "US Handguns of WWII."
The US military bought about 2,600 of these pistols in 1944. Most were used for training purposes. An unknown number (at least 100) went to OSS, where they were heavily modified by Bell Labs with vented barrels and silencers for clandestine use. Military pistols will have "Property of US" or "Property of USA" markings. An Ordinance Corps escutcheon will be on the right side of the frame.

225 An interesting suppressed firearm was the Remington Nylon 66.Prior to the Bay of Pigs invasion there was a design. Some had short barrels with suppressors, and a block switch on the right of the receiver to keep the bolt from cycling. Durability to salt water was the reason for choosing the Nylon 66, and use was to be frogmen taking out guards and dogs.

Things like lesser brand revolvers (think H&R 32s and 38s) were produced for guards. .22s and shotguns for general use (and maybe meat on the table). I like Iver Johnson's, having tinkered with many. There are some out there with Brit broad arrow acceptance marks, used by couriers and what not.

And determine how much ammo I'll need. Never enough ammo. On the plus side, I think my town has more gun shops than coffee shops. I need to do some looking around, try to find one I like.

Also, a lot of really excellent ranges around me.

299 Have you thought about putting it in an aftermarket chassis? That's basically what the RPR is, right?
Posted by: Oddbob at November 16, 2025 09:25 PM (3nLb4)

No, the cheap-ass stock is fine (with suitable Bubba improvements). The barrel, however, is so far over 3000 rounds that I’ve lost count. Yet it still shoots many loads sub MOA. When that stops, I’ll get the RPR. Though the Predator mod 2 looks very interesting.
I don’t know if the Predator and RPR have any commonality. It’s a good question.

300 So, wait....you guys are telling my my Colt 1911A1 may NOT have been carried by Teddy Roosevelt himself?
Posted by: MkY at November 16, 2025 09:29 PM (q6tQZ)

Does it have one of the Israeli-made replacement slides on it? TR was known to favor those, at least that's what my grandfather told me, and you aren't going to call my grandpa a liar now, are you?

311 Zontar: The Thing from Venus

This big hit has such an all-star cast that on the IMDb page, eight out of the fourteen Top Cast don't even have pictures, including the leading lady.

312 No range time, sadly. Had to take the dog to the vet, she whipped her leg and got her split taken off.

Back to the Church Gun for my EDC, with my XD45 as backup.

314 The only bullet I could get to shoot under one MOA out of my 6.5 Creedmore was the Hornady 140 grain BTHP match - which sadly has a relatively crappy BC, and won't stay super sonic more than a few hundred yards. The factory Hornady match loads produce patterns closely resembling a 12 gauge full of buckshot at the same distance. Reading on reloading pages I'm not the only person to have that kind of disappointing performance from a 6.5 Creedmore. Frankly my .22lr Marlin XT-22 shooting any random crappy factory ammo groups tighter.
