Incandescent Moon Interlude

There's a name for this: A Nicoll-Dyson laser. It was proposed in 2005 by James Nicoll for powering spaceships over vast distances. As he points out in the comments on the video - a rare exception to Rule One* - vaporising planets was never its intended purpose, merely a happy accident.

Transcendent Teal Interlude

In H. P. Lovecraft's The Color Out of Space he wrote about a strange material that emitted a colour that didn't exist anywhere on the electromagnetic spectrum. That sounds wild, but in fact imaginary colours are real - imaginary, but still real - and you're about to see one.

(Maybe. Some people don't report anything special, but it worked for me and it was rather startling.)

That Apple sock? The thing they called the "iPhone Pocket" even though it is neither an iPhone nor a pocket? That thing that costs less than a dollar to make and they are charging $230 for?

You can't buy one.

Because it has already sold out.

I'm up, sorta, and sipping coffee and remembering a strange dream. Roy Rogers was visiting Noo Awlins with Trigger, and I met him at his hotel. Not sure if I worked there or was visiting. He thought the levee at the end of the avenue bordered a flood plain, and I had to tell him, "No, Roy, thats the entire width of the Mississippi River." I asked if I could borrow Trigger to run an errand, and he said yes. So here's your intrepid correspondent, riding Roy's big palomino across the big river bridge on a pedestrian walkway (which does not exist in real life) . . . (cont.)

Good morning, good people. A fine morning to have buttermilk biscuits and sausage gravy, that's been a stranger to our table for some inexplicable reason.

Later on,

older daughter will stop by with a 3lb corned venison roast. One of the tastier ways to eat deer meat ever.

And as usual, may all effort from you result in maximum benefit in all things, with maximum heartburn for the leftwit fungi.

25 (cont.) . . . to visit somebody on the West Bank. I needed to give Trigger some water -- it was hot, as usual. So I found myself wading through mud and water almost up to my knees in the guy's back yard. For some reason I couldn't see Trigger there. But a guy was giving out treats to a raft of neighborhood cats. When I got close I saw that he was giving them little samples from a toothpaste tube. I was saying, "That's not good for cats," when I woke up.

Melatonin. Hell of a drug.

27 I watchedthe video up until the color experiment. I certainly saw the "psychedelic teal" field, and there was something, a vertical band, a bit darker off to the right edge of the screen, still in the green category. Was that what she was trying for?

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at November 15, 2025 05:55 AM (wzUl9)

28 Wasn't sure if the eye conditioning for seeing a variation of cyan started with Bekah's hair or not, it didn't. I saw the color to the right of the video before it appeared in the video window. Interesting phenomenon, that said it's a version of cyan not teal.

There are corporate spy networks that steal inventions (and then patent them) in every type of service or manufacturing.

The left has co-opted the observation, "Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel," to mean that someone who espouses patriotic sentiments *is* a scoundrel. No. It means that when all other manipulation tricks have failed, the scoundrel resorts to patriotic appeals to his intended victims, or proclaims he is doing whatever he's doing from patriotic motives. Two different things.

I think that’s why the film version got rid of any references to who was originally written to be, and made the narrator nameless. I think I know what Weber was trying to do intellectually, have two different types of revolutionaries critique each other; but it just never really worked on that level.

142 Second, their right to apply for patents is suspended for five years.

No problem at all, just form a subsidiary that does nothing more than manage patents.

People who manage real-estate do something similar all the time, different LLCs for different properties so that the umbrella organization doesn't get sued out of existence, but the damage is limited to one entity.

Same idea. Create an organization that owns patents and does nothing more than manage licensing or be set up for selling to a larger entity.

143 That whole Apple sock business just shows that there will never be an incentive for Apple products to not be absolute shit because there is no link between quality,

I dunno... whenever I feel an impulse to upgrade my software development machine, I keep eyeing the Mac Book Pro because it does represent top quality performance and build.

I just can't get past the fact it can't be upgraded and I can never justify the cost. In tech, wait a few months and the next tier equals or exceeds today's top tier.

Looking at the AMD 395 AI Pro Max in the mini-pc market, knowing that in a few months something way better will be enclosed in a better container.

The same thing in EVs. Buy today's top model and next year's lower tier will have better range and better performance than the today's State of the Art.
