Northern Lights over the "Garden of the Gods"
in Colorado Springs, by Daniel Forster

Seems almost unreal, but people are saying this is real photo taken as part of a series of photos just last night.

Looks like an original series Star Trek set-- where they had a few (foam) rocks in foreground and then the background was red light over some kind of shim or cyclotron wall or something.

Anyone from Colorado Springs? Can you confirm?

Photos from last year show that the Northern Lights do light up the area with a pink light.

SAVAGE NATURE

Toddler loves his horse.

Airport reunion.

Transom Cat watches you, judges you.

Super senior dachshund out on an adventure.

First snow of winter.

Huge tree in a storm. This better not be AI.

Cats are much more naive about AI.

Flashback: Waterproof mobile phones in the early 2000s.

European starlings are great mimics. Almost as good as the black guy in Police Academy. (Whose name I just realize I know, for some reason-- Michael Winslow. I wonder what important bit of knowledge my brain deleted to hard-code that.)

Do you like monkeys? Do you like vermin who crawl all over you? Then you'll love monkey vermin.

If you see two people dancing, you're left-brained, if you see a bowl of fruit, you're right brained. Well okay but I see Elsie the cow and I can't unsee her, so I guess I'm just f***ed. Back me up -- it's a cow, right?

That's not really proof of anything, I primed you to see a cow.

But at least I'm no longer alone in the world.

6 Willowed from previous thread:

There were some tropes on 1970s TV that seemed to pop up everywhere.

- The guy who doesn't know who he is or how he got there.

- The bad guy who does all his bad stuff in person, but dressed as a woman.

- The super-smart monkey who shows everyone up in every sitcom.

8 Digital cameras really enhance the aurora when you use them to take a picture.

The one last year was visible to the naked eye and came in green and red colors, but the pictures really popped.

I don't know if it's just the phone camera or if any digital camera would do that (I neglected to run that experiment last night on account of it would have required driving out of town.)

Two nights ago I saw a lot of red, didn't see the green. Last night pretty much nothing. They say a camera picks up the colors better than the naked eye. Haven't checked tonight yet.

Entertainment was once my gold standard for entertainment news. The finally jumped the shark for me when their movie reviews by Owen and Lisa went woke (she gave Juno an A- because Juno didn't abort her baby!), and then having Stephen King as a guest columnist (with a portrait of him looking like a demented The Grinch in really harsh ominous lighting). He was insufferable in those columns. I hate read them.

Horde, what are some of the greatest entertainment media casualties you wish the left hadn't ruined? EW as a magazine is up there for me, near the top. But wokeism plus internet killed it. I listen to youtubers for box office news and movie recommends now.

(Good luck with your new movie channel, TJM! Slow and steady, plus consistency, is key. Don't rush the process. Hopefully friends here and elsewhere like, subscribe, and hit the notification bell to help your algorithm. Because the YT algorithm is a capricious she-devil of great evil.)

100 Negro Bill was a genuine Wild West hero, and that canyon was named in *honor* of him. Not that that mattered to the Woke Mob. They saw the word "Negro" and lost their damn minds, as they generally do. Glad we took plenty of pictures at the trailhead sign, for posterity.

122 It is now called Grandstaff Canyon. Modern sensibilities had re-named it Negro Bill Canyon from an earlier adjective.

I’m convinced that … word… was not necessarily a pejorative. It was a descriptor, neither good nor bad.

They also renamed Squaw Flat in Canyonlands and campground, is now called Needles campground. I’m pretty sure they renamed Molly’s Nipple, too, but I can’t recall what it is now.

“Bobby’s Hole” is still extant, however. For now.

Miles was "taken over" by evil aliens several times. He was put in alien "prison" for a simulated 20 years which drove him mad. His "future self" was killed. Etc.

Supposedly, it was sung by Loulie Jean Norman, a soprano coloratura, although there appears to be some disputation about this. The style of singing is known as 'faux-Latin'.

If you hear the singing, it is a Season 1 episode, as it was removed after Season 1.

And Uncle Ben. Sad how we lost our beloved Jemima, Ben and the Land O'Lakes maiden.

Makes me think back to the multi-racial neighborhood of my youth. We had white kids, mostly Italian and Polish, lots of black families, lots of brown familes (mostly Portuguese in our 'hood) a smattering of Chinese, Pacific Islander, some Native Americans off-the-nearby-rez, lots of Middle Eastern Christians (Syrian, Egyptian, Lebanese, Turkish.) And I can honestly say is that to us kids, what color/race/background someone was meant not one good goddam thing. Never. Nobody ever once said "Oh, we can't ask Paul to play football, he's black." That wasn't a thing that existed. All we cared about was if a kid was cool, and up for playing baseball, or basketball, or street hockey, or building a fort or whatever. Not one kid in my neighborhood regardless of color would ever have even thought to have been offended by Aunt Jemima.

158 No, it was named N***ger Bill Canyon. Really. For many years. It was even on the USGS Topo maps iirc, and the road signs.

It used to be, re-naming geological features, maps, mountains &c. was like pulling teeth. They didn’t want to do it, because it is a huge pain in the ass and, there will never be an end to it.

“Squaw” is the Indian word for Female. That’s it. There is no negative connotation to it. Or at least no more than ordinarily attached by the natives themselves.

Lewis & Clark noted that the practices varied widely among different nations. Some were quite enlightened, some were quite bad. One tribe relegated all menial tasks to the women, and the warriors laid around all day doing pretty much nothing. Noble Savage indeed.

Canadian Thanksgiving and Halloween were in October.

Since I'm alone, I may see if I can help out at a soup kitchen on Christmas.

My friends came yesterday and we had our 4th annual Christmas in November party. The kids like to decorate the tree. Plenty of food brought by my friends. I had gifts for the kids.

The outside was decorated today. The lights look great. I have to do leaves one last time and may put out a few more spotlights. There's a few last little things inside - nothing major. It's just me and the dog in the house. Mom would love the decorations, as always.

And I don't give a crap about New Years. I guess I'm now good until the next Daylight savings time. Weird.

Bill Grandstaff lived in that canyon, all by hisself, in a cabin in the 19th Century. There weren’t hardly anybody living in Moab then. A black guy was pretty rare. So it’s easy to see how he got his nickname. They weren’t being mean, that was what they called him, probably simply to distinguish from any other Bills in the area.

They renamed it “Negro Bill” in the 1980s, maybe a little bit later.

181 The Aurora here was meh.

I didn't even bother looking. The clouds were rolling in.

Plus, I was so spoiled about the Northern Lights. In April of 1985, buddy and I drove from Wyoming to Alaska, and we were treated to the most spectacular Lights ever. Four nights. So many variations. Dancing ribbons, all the colors, and some really weird stuff. North of Lethbridge, some time before dawn, the lights became a sheet of white feathers, from horizon to horizon. Very symmetrical. Like wallpaper.

182 I don't remember previously hearing this about Tucker Carlson at all:
"But something happened to Tucker Carlson in early 2023 that profoundly changed him.
In his own words, he was 'physically mauled by a demon or something unseen that left claw marks on my sides. Then I was seized with this very intense desire to read the Bible.'
The demon attacked him during his sleep, with his wife at his side and four dogs in the bed. In the interview he gave the Blaze 18 months later, he said he still bore the marks and woke up in the morning to find blood in the sheets."
https://tinyurl.com/yc57pues

I guess my first question is, when the demon attack occurred, how long had it been since the dogs had had their toenails clipped?

Women in primitive societies are reserved to things you can do if pregnant in and around the home camp - most food prep. Men went out on more or less extended hunting expeditions that required some danger and strength to haul the food back. I suppose home duties needing male strength like raising a hut would also be done by men.. Dealing with tame animals like chickens would be mostly done by women.

211 Yeah, but my belief is that the Word We Cannot Say wasn’t a pejorative, any more than Squaw was a pejorative. If you read Huck Finn and other books of the era, they weren’t used in a mean way.

I get it, the meanings of words can change. Maybe they shouldn’t. “Chicanos” was the preferred nomenclature for a short while. Then “Latinos”. “Hispanic” is a classification invented by the Nixon era HUD, iirc. For benefits purposes.

“Afro-American” held sway for a brief shining moment, after “Negro” fell out of favor. Currently “Black With A Capital B” is de rigeur, but must be coupled with “white” in lower case, to signify superiority. I first saw this in the rarified air of Academe 30 years ago. I called Bullshit on it then.

He will at some point wake us up to get out of the covers, then get back under them, maybe go potty, and will move me inch by inch so I'll wake up and find myself almost pushed the bed. And he refuses to move, so
I have to shove his dead weight back. And he often stretches out his legs so his claws dig into my legs and wake me up.

It is the most distracting, yet fulfilling, sleep. And I struggle to sleep when his weight isn't pressed to my side.

One of the accounts I always found amusing/enlightening was by Tacitus who traveled among the German tribes in the 1st century. He said the women appeared to do all the day to work, even with the animals. He said the men were large, but appeared to practice with their weapons while they drank their strongly brewed bier most of the day. And that the highlight of the day was always when 2 of them would engage in a huge one on one fight over some perceived insult. If both survived they would go back to drinking with each other.

Well some things never change.

But, at the same time, they are dependent upon Chinese abroad for technological advances, health advances, and business advances.

A Communist society is stagnant pursuant to evolutionary growth. It stifles any merit system. It rewards the wrong people, thus negating innovation.

I think shutting down Chinese participation in the US colleges and kicking them out of the US immediately makes a move on Taiwan inevitable.

Tubi is pretty good.
Did not realize there were so many bad zombie shows.

At least two knock-offs of the Korean "Alone". They were thinking this would be sooo much better with a hipster fag and a really fugly chick ..

We're you able to see them? I can never remember exactly where you're at!

We saw a faint, but distinct, red glow. I'm around Mountain Home, but out in the sticks, so the tree line made it difficult, but people say it was amazing Mountain Home.

Walking Dead became a cultural phenomenon for a time.
I'm not sure any show could do that today

Streaming has fractured audiences to a degree that would make any kind of shared experience almost impossible.

270 265 I'm in the Arkansas River Valley outside of Fort Smith and we never see stuff like the Aurora. What I described was seventy (damn) years ago along the Lake Erie shore. Stuff you remember from your Little Kid days, it was pretty vibrant, with Dad remembering the stuff he saw in Finland as a tyke. I imagine seeing the Aurora would be better a little more south from Fairport Harbor what with light pollution nowadays.

Z Nation a good knock off farce of TWD. Black Summer was a fairly good prequel to Z Nation. Short but fair enough. It was serious and two seasons was enough.

Most of what I have seen of TWD spinoffs - right up there with MASH spinoffs.

I liked both of those. TWD: read the comic book instead; the show was gay and stupid.

278 Here's something Iranian. I have a friend in Erie, PA, an Iranian guy, married to a Polish gal (figure that one out). Guy's an engineer, Americanized. One day he says "Bill, your elbows are healed". Psoriasis. He said his sister in Iran had the same problem, asked what I was using on it. I told him Bag Baum. A week or so later he told me he sent her some because they don't have it in Iran. The stuff is made from lanolin (think sheep) and petroleum (think oil) and the Iranians can't figure it out.

279 Hey everybody! Hey ONT!

Don't forget everyone, the vote is about to be taken for 2025 America's Sweetheart. You can vote online! I just learned about this elsewhere on the web. The winner will receive the AS crown, a new Corvette and $100,000 cash. This year's nominees are:

- Ayn Rand
- Nancy Pelosi
- Sidney Sweeney

Who will win the crown??

281 I live in a rural area near Colorado Springs and saw nothing of the sort the last few nights. The only time I ever saw the Aurora Borealis was during a camping trip in northern Wyoming in 1975. At that time it looked like a hazy glow on the northern horizon, like a nearby large city - but there were no cities in that direction.

We all remember about five and a half years ago when the pangolin-wielding man wrecked havoc.
