Top Story

  • Valve has followed up on its very popular Steam Deck gaming handheld with a desktop Steam Machine and a wireless Steam Controller. (Tom's Hardware)

Like the Steam Deck, the 6" black cube called the Steam Machine is at its heart a PC built on AMD components. It has a six core Zen 4 CPU, and a 28 core RDNA3 GPU.

It comes with 16GB of RAM in two DDR5 SODIMMs, 8GB of GGDR6 RAM for the graphics card, and 512GB or 2TB of SSD in an M.2 2230 slot. There's a vacant M.2 2280 slot to add storage of your own.

On the I/O front it has HDMI, DisplayPort, one USB-C port, four USB-A ports, and somewhat disappointingly, gigabit Ethernet.

It also has four built-in antennas for wifi, Bluetooth, and the Steam Controller, and a built-in 300W power supply so you don't need an external brick. It's cooled by a single 120mm fan.

And most importantly it comes running SteamOS rather than Windows.

Give how determined Microsoft is to drive its own users away, I am looking forward to this little device. It's literally half the speed of my current desktop (which has a 12 core Zen 4 CPU and an RDNA3 graphics card with twice the graphics cores and RAM) but for something that sits quietly in the living room attached to the TV it looks ideal.

No prices yet. Shipping "early 2026".

Not in the sense that i'm ever going to play it, just by how there's a lot that's culturally fascinating about how popular it is before it even exists, and why. Thinking about the questions "why would they build their new world like this, why is it gaining so much traction, and is this a really good sign culturally even though it's so dark and brutal and almost blasphemous on its surface". I guess it's the "meta" about it I find fascinating. Even though nobody says "the meta" anymore. But you know what I mean.

At what point is a hoax not a hoax?

Part of being a hoax is that it's clever enough that the average person believes it because they don't really have any motivation or suspicion to not immediately believe it.

But beyond some line, you're just bullshitting and only the most thoroughly committed acolytes even pretend you're not full of shit.

For whatever reason, it's starting to feel like "hoax" isn't the right word for this kind of Public Lie anymore.

Looks like the new high tech digital heat pump system we put in back in March blew a zone control board the night before last.

And all without using supplemental heat strips to produce heat.

But it is interesting with all the instrumentation that I have available to me, including energy consumption tracked and graphed in 15 minute increments from our utility provider.

I can literally see on the usage plot where the coffee pot energizes on the timer, and begins to heat up.

Routes are safe. Some of the kids are challenging, though a lot of the littles seem to really like me. It's just some of the kids on each route that are challenging at varying degrees depending on the day and I'm guessing what's going on in their home lives.

An update on me. I have converted the three gold-diggers back into the friends they were before my wife passed. I have dinner with two of them on occasion. Last night one of them invited me in to watch some sports on TV after a dinner out. So I am less socially isolated.

Found out she is really a Karen, with the TV on all day, believes every Leftist cant, and we have very divergent interests. But not isolated.

We had the gSon and gDaughter here on Tuesday. They requested that I escort them to "the creek" -- the small gully made by street runoff in the wooded area at the corner of our development.

They built a bridge that ran from the roots of a tree against the bank over to the opposite side. It was about eight feet long and about two feet above the desultory flow. Deadfall was their medium. They cobbled together / wove / tangled something of a bridge-like nature and gSon crossed over on it.

Then they re-engineered it with more materials while cheerfully ignoring my warnings that they ought not place their trust in tree parts that had been deadfall for who knows how long and to what degree it may be rotted.

I enjoyed watching them play together outdoors, something they seldom do, and to feel sad that carefree moments doing whatever suited their fancies outdoors as my generation could do when we were their age has, sadly, mostly disappeared now.

gSon tested the improved bridge by crab walking along it. He had only traversed about a third of it when it gave way and he was crab walking in the water. I larfed. He got hot chocolate for having soaked his pants. We all had fun.

128 Evening and morning to all on this Thor's Day, as we skip along to the middle of November. It's 60 F. here and going up to about 80, so the kind of temps sensible climates have in late September with real fall.

Today Linda is dragging me out to some "scavenger hunt" event at World Market. They do this several times a year. They hide some gift cards all over the store with a clue that they are "next to something green," for example. People surge in like they're being given water in the desert. Maybe it won't be too busy on a weekday.

Obviously this is the kind of thing that no self-respecting third-grader would be caught dead doing. However, I can walk over to the Barnes & Noble for a coffee and to leaf through the few magazines that interest me.

I haven't gotten up the nerve to dist Linda down and talk about this. Some of the house listings the Owensboro agent has been emailing me are attractive, some are meh.

Salty and Notsothoreau have been suggesting Kansas for a while. I like the houses I see there on Realtor, but the property taxes tend to push the monthly note on even a decently-priced home into a higher range than I like.

I guess I need to screw my courage to the sticking place, get some prices from U-Haul about storing my furniture and the like, and get an apartment in Evansville or Owensboro. From there I can range around and see if Terre Haute, for instance, appeals, and if I like living in IN or KY.

Scary if I have to do it alone. But, "Feel the fear and do it anyway."

And yet it made a kind of sense, a character moment for Ray. "I tried to think of something from my childhood . . . something that would never harm us. . . ."

And that line from Murray is just one of hordes of sly remarks that really made the movie the classic it is. "You don't often see that kind of behavior in a major appliance." "What a lovely singing voice you must have." "Don't cross the streams? Okay, important safety tip. Thanks, Egon." "I've worked in the private sector. They expect results."
